Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Sarah Silverman has landed a recurring role in the second season of Showtime’s Masters of Sex. Silverman will recur in the guest-starring role of Helen. No word about Helen’s function in the show, but we’re guessing she has something to do with sex. Production on season two is currently underway in Los Angeles, and will premiere Sunday, July 13th. Silverman received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Comedy Series for The Sarah Silverman Program, and was also nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Monk. But these days she’s maybe best known for the Emmy she won — for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics, as one of the writers of that hummable tune I’m Fucking Matt Damon for ABC’s late night show Jimmy Kimmel Live! Silverman will next be seen starring in Seth MacFarlane’s soon-to-be released feature A Million Ways to Die in the West...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Sarah Silverman is returning to TV -- for one night only.
The comedian, who created and starred in Comedy Central's "The Sarah Silverman Program" for three years, is heading to HBO for her first comedy special with the premium cable network, "Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles." Premiering in the fall, "We Are Miracles" is presented in association with Funny or Die.
"Sarah Silverman is a fresh, fearless and utterly original comedy voice," HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said. "I'm thrilled that we can bring the humor of this unique talent to our viewers."
"We Are Miracles" will tape in Los Angeles in May. While it's Silverman's first comedy special for HBO, it's not the first in her career. "Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic" had a limited theatrical release in 2005. Liam Lynch, director of "Jesus Is Magic" will direct, edit and serve as a consulting producer on the upcoming project as well.

Although she’s been doing comedy for two decades, Sarah Silverman has little in the way of specials—those hallmarks of stand-up careers—to show for it. She has her 2005 concert film, Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic, but her IMDb page is surprisingly light on the specials that crowd Comedy Central’s schedule or pop up occasionally on HBO or Showtime. That’ll change later this year, when HBO debuts Silverman’s first stand-up special, Sarah Silverman: We Are Miracles. Network president Michael Lombardo called her a “fresh” voice in a press release, perhaps forgetting that she co-starred on ...

The program will be taped in Los Angeles in May and will be presented in association with Funny or Die.Silverman has had her own show, The Sarah Silverman Program, and a comedy movie, Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic, but this is her first HBO comedy special. The lack of censorship on HBO will work well with her brand of humor. That being said, here are two great (and pretty tame) Silverman clips (the first a little Nsfw, the second very Sfw...

Here is a preview at the upcoming films being distributed by Roadside Attractions this year. They have some pretty fantastic things lined up. Take a peek!
Project Nim
In Theatres June 10th
From the Oscar-winning team behind Man On Wire comes the story of Nim, the chimpanzee who in the 1970s became the focus of a landmark experiment which aimed to show that an ape could learn to communicate with language if raised and nurtured like a human child. Following Nim’s extraordinary journey through human society, and the enduring impact he makes on the people he meets along the way, the film is an unflinching and unsentimental biography of an animal we tried to make human. What we learn about his true nature – and indeed our own . is comic, revealing and profoundly unsettling.

As the search for Falcon Heene, the six-year-old boy feared to have been trapped in a runaway Colorado balloon, continues today, the story has more or less less consumed the Twittersphere. Twitter-Wood hasn't been immune to that effect with Alyssa Milano, Simon Pegg and plenty of others posting about the unresolved scenario.
On the flipside of the Twitterverse, cast members of "New Moon" have been swapping tweets in anticipation of the movie's scene screenings at next week's Rome Film Festival. Check out who's been talking to whom, along with Rainn Wilson's new wolf T-shirt, Tom Felton's metal T-shirt and what's been going on in Diablo Cody's dreams. It's all after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for October 15, 2009.

PARK CITY -- As the 2006 Sundance Film Festival wound down, Roadside Attractions and Samuel Goldwyn Films jointly acquired North American rights for mid-six figures to comedian-turned-writer-director Bobcat Goldthwait's provocative relationship comedy Stay, which proved a popular hit with festival audiences. And Bauer Martinez Distribution tied up final details on its acquisition of North American rights to Finn Taylor's comedy The Darwin Awards. Stay tells the raunchy tale of a high school teacher who harbors a dark sexual secret from her past that she is terrified to reveal to her fiance. When she decides to bare all, she must deal with the consequences. Because it is unclear whether the film will earn an R or an NC-17 rating, the bidding on the film attracted only independent distributors, who, because they are not MPAA members, will have the option to release the film unrated. (Roadside released the 2004 Sundance docu Super Size Me without a rating.) Goldthwait took the time to meet all interested distributors, but Roadside and Goldwyn had the advantage of having released Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic. Goldthwait and Silverman are cohorts on the late-night TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live, where Goldthwait is a director.

Lynch, who is in production on the feature Tenacious D In: The Pick of Destiny, collaborated with Silverman to adapt her show for the screen.
