In the summer of 2018, Richie Castellano and his buddies posted a remarkable cover of the 1972 Yes epic “Close to the Edge” to their YouTube channel and watched it rack up over half a million views. “I’m blown away by these comments,” he wrote in response to the outpouring of love by prog fans. “This isn’t a bunch of music snobs showing off. This is genuine love for Yes and their music. We are hardcore Yes fans and this video is not about conquering a song or doing it better than anyone.

Toro Toro Toro: Amamra Grabs the Bull By the Horns in Transformative Role
For those who champion the bull in Spain’s electrifying yet antiquated tradition of the running of the bulls, there’s a fresh perspective awaiting in a genre-blending narrative that redefines and realigns the boundaries between genders and species. Departing from her beginnings in young adult romantic comedy with Fragile (2021), French-Algerian filmmaker Emma Benestan reunites with Oulaya Amamra for their third collaboration—a sophomore film that exudes a Cocteau-esque spirit with hints of whac-a-mole horror genre elements. An exploration of crossed boundaries and crossing over, Animale is reminiscent of last year’s Le Règne animal and especially Julia Ducournau’s Raw, despite embracing what is a familiar, well-trodden path, we find a fresh take on violence as redemption and salvation.…...

A first clip has been unveiled for Emma Benestan’s “Animale,” which closes the Cannes Film Festival’s Critics’ Week strand this year.
The film is set in the Camargue region of the south of France, where daring youths participate in the local tradition of bull running. Only one woman, 22-year-old Nejma, takes her place in the arena. Taunting and evading the animals with increasing boldness, Nejma seeks to prove herself the equal of the men – inside and outside of the arena. But both situations put Nejma at risk, as a different threat looms over the community of riders: a bull is on the loose and young men are being killed. The film is designed as a supernatural fable that blends with the classic body horror, and the revenge thriller.
After several shorts and a documentary, “Animale” is Benestan’s second fiction feature after the acclaimed “Fragile” aka “Hard Shell, Soft Shell...

Chicago – The 20th Century crisis that was World War II resulted in a bloodbath for virtually all of European and Allied countries … except in “neutral” Switzerland. Veteran writer and director Laurent Négre, a Swiss native, pokes the holes of truth into that overinflated neutrality in the imported feature film “A Forgotten Man.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Set in 1945 at the final days of World War II, the story involves Heinrich Zwygart (Michael Neuenschwander) … the Swiss Ambassador to Germany … returning home to Geneva with wartime Ptsd and a cache of secrets about the relationship of “neutral” Switzerland to the just-defeated Nazi regime. Thinking he would have a cakewalk in his homecoming, especially with the dirt he has on the Swiss leadership, he is greeted with indifference from his government, wife Clara (Manuela Biedermann), daughter Helene (Cléa Eden) and Helene’s boyfriend Nicolas (Yann Philipona), who pursues the truth for the “school paper.” The past...

Norman Reedus returns as Sam in the gameplay trailer for Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.
During last night’s State Of Play, one of the biggest surprises was the gameplay trailer for Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2. And blimey, what a trailer that is.
Firstly, the game is now called Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. Secondly, it looks freaky as heck.
Take a look at 9-minute gameplay trailer for Death Stranding 2:
Is that a baby… in a body cavity? Well, that’s me sold on the game.
Death Stranding 2 was initially announced at the 2022 Game Awards, but it’s been a long road to get here. Kojima reportedly rewrote the entire game at one point after the pandemic.
The trailer finds Sam working for a mysterious civilian outfit called the Drawbridge and being shown around by Léa Seydoux’s Fragile. As Sam heads out into the world,...

Busan’s industry platform, Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm), is a marketplace where sales agents set up their stalls to sell projects in development and completed films. But increasingly, it’s also becoming a place where producers can find the stories and other source material they need to bring those films and series to life.
Last year, Acfm launched the Busan Story Market, a more user-friendly moniker for the various strands of the market that present works available for adaptation and remake. The initiative was a hit with industry participants and this year has been adjusted further to include a greater number of early stage IPs.
“The feedback we received last year is that the industry hoped to discover more original works, rather than material that has already been adapted, including stories that have yet to be published,” explains Acfm general manager Seri Park.

It’s a hot summer day, the car AC is on turbo and the radio is blasting Miguel’s “Sure Thing.” My 8-year-old nephew is singing along happily — until I tell him the song is older than he is.
He’s extremely puzzled. But it’s true.
“Sure Thing” was released in 2010 and was named Billboard’s No. 1 R&b/hip-hop song of 2011. But TikTok resurrected the melodic track this year, and the platform thrust it to higher heights on the pop charts, as streaming platforms added it to current playlists and radio stations began replaying the song 13 years after its release.
Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer” was released in 2019, but the addictive bop became a favorite on her ultra-popular Eras Tour, and now it’s in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Sia, thanks to TikTok, relaunched a platinum hit with “Unstoppable” late last year, though it was released...

Ben Folds has unveiled What Matters Most, his first studio album in eight years. The project is out today, June 2nd via New West Records. To support the release, Folds has mapped out an extensive tour.
Folds has been making music since the ’80s, and in a statement, he said What Matters Most is the culmination of all those years of writing, recording, touring, and otherwise putting in his 10,000 hours. “There’s a lifetime of craft and experience all focused into this one record,” he explained. “Sonically, lyrically, emotionally, I don’t think it’s an album I could have made at any other point in my career.”
“I come from the vinyl era, and this perhaps more than any record I’ve made is a true album,” Folds continued. “There’s a very specific sequence and arc to each side, all building up to this almost surreal positive finale,...

“But Wait, There’s More,” the title of the opening track of What Matters Most, seems to suggest that, after an eight-year gap since the release of So There, Ben Folds still has something to say, and that the album might explore previously uncharted terrain for the singer-songwriter. But the song, which features a lovely piano melody and some Beach Boys-esque vocal harmonies, amounts to a relatively familiar reflection on aging and the passage of time—lyrical themes that Folds continues to mine for the majority of the album.
Throughout What Matters Most, tracks like “Kristine from 7th Grade” and “Fragile” attempt to make sense of the past and the existential crisis of middle age by examining difficult or failed relationships but too often feel trite or even patronizing. The latter finds Folds’s narrator chiding a “childlike” lover for being manipulative and abusive but offers no real insights into...

British musician Sting interrupted a concert in Warsaw on Saturday evening to warn his audience that democracy is under attack worldwide and to denounce the war in Ukraine as “an absurdity based upon a lie.”
He asked a popular Polish actor, Maciej Stuhr, to come onstage to translate his warning that democracy is “in grave danger of being lost unless we defend it.”
“The alternative to democracy is a prison, a prison of the mind. The alternative to democracy is violence, oppression, imprisonment and silence,” Sting said and then ran his hand across his neck in a throat-cutting gesture.
The 70-year-old delivered his message in a country that borders Ukraine, where Russia launched its invasion on Feb. 24 that has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions. Poland has become the place of refuge for more Ukrainians than any other country.

There was a moment after intermission at Cynthia Erivo’s Hollywood Bowl show when she returned to the stage with no shoes on. She wanted her feet to touch the ground. She was taking everything in, and that called for her heels to come off. Until last week, Erivo had never even set foot in the iconic Los Angeles venue, let alone performed in it.
Friday night changed that, as the Emmy-nominated and multi-hyphenate singer, actress, songwriter and author took to the stage for the first time and belted out a plethora of tunes accompanied by the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra. Despite worries about the increased cases of the Delta variant In L.A. County, fans, press and a lot of Emmy voters came out to see Erivo in her Bowl debut. Very few concert-goers wore masks, social distancing was not required and per the Bowl, proof of vaccination was not required for entry.

Robert Aldrich promised no-holds barred rough-tough dramas, and his first two Associates & Aldrich productions certainly hit hard. This play adaptation shows its director’s strength (no-flinching full shock impact) and weakness (theatrical overplaying) in full measure, but the unrestrained performances of Jack Palance and Eddie Albert are unforgettable. The main event can’t have pleased the Pentagon: shooting one’s own officer in combat. Plus, Lee Marvin and Richard Jaeckel get in early innings for their future work in Aldrichs’s The Dirty Dozen.

Madrid — One of Europe’s best-known genre auteurs, Jaume Balagueró is teaming with fellow Spaniard Pau Freixas, writer-director of “The Red Band Society,” and creator of Mediaset España’s “I Know Who You Are,” on a small-screen version of “Los sin nombre” (“The Nameless”).
Created by Balagueró and Freixas and currently in development, the series is set up at Arca Audiovisual, Filmax’ TV division.
Based on a novel by British horror scribe Ramsey Campbell, “The Nameless” was Balagueró’s 1999 feature debut and established him as a leading light of Spain’s auteur genre movement.
In its turn, “Nameless’” established production house Filmax, headed by Julio and Carlos Fernández, as a prime mover of horror movies in Spain for much of the next decade.
Film went on to launch the Fantastic Factory with Brian Yuzna and to produce Balagueró’s “Darkness” (2002), which grossed $22.2 million in the U.S., Calista Flockhart-starrer “Fragile” (2003) and above all,...

Bauer Martinez Distribution announced Thursday the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to the Filmax Entertainment film Fragile, a thriller starring Calista Flockhart and directed by Jaume Balaguero. The film, produced by Julio Fernandez and Just Films, opened this month in Spain. " 'Fragile' is a scary, well-done horror movie," said Philippe Martinez, CEO of Bauer Martinez, who made a splash in Hollywood last month after acquiring David Ayer's film Harsh Times at the Toronto International Film Festival. "We're thrilled to be in business with a strong company like Filmax, whose high-quality horror movies fit perfectly with our strategy." The deal was closed by Martinez and Antonia Nava with the help of ICM, who represented Filmax on the deal. Fragile centers on an American nurse (Flockhart) who works at a rundown British children's hospital that's haunted by a former patient who tries to keep current patients from leaving alive. Balaguero (Darkness) wrote the script along with Jordi Galceran.
