Even outside of Star Wars, prequels tend to get a bad rap. From answering questions that didn’t need answering (and destroying the mysteries of the original in the process) to repeating established formulas ad nauseum, it’s deceptively easy for these blasts from the past to trip over their previously established lore. After all, it’s kind of hard to tell an engaging story when audiences already know what happens next.
Thankfully, the horror genre seems to be especially blessed with filmmakers that see prequels as an opportunity to tell original stories within an established world. I mean, some folks even thought that last year’s Pearl was even better than X, and the trailer for Arkasha Stevenson’s upcoming The First Omen looks like it kicks all kinds of ass – and that’s precisely why we’ve decided to come up with a list highlighting six underrated horror prequels for your viewing pleasure!

When he’s not pining for Blackbeard’s embrace on Our Flag Means Death or reprimanding werewolves for using foul language, Rhys Darby fights for the future of humankind! Blue Fox Entertainment‘s Relax, I’m From The Future trailer is here to tickle your ribs after the long Labor Day weekend. The sci-fi comedy hails from Luke Higginson for his feature directorial debut. In addition to operating the camera, Higginson wrote the screenplay and edited the film inspired by his short film of the same name that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 10 years ago.
In the Relax, I’m From The Future trailer, Darby stars as Casper, a time traveler trapped in the past who befriends Holly (Gabrielle Graham), a jaded drifter. They exploit his knowledge of the future, oblivious to the consequences they have set in motion, while a more competent time traveler, Doris (Janine Theriault), tries to stop them.

One of the coolest indie films of the late 1990s was Vincenzo Natali’s brutal sci-fi horror Cube, in which six strangers are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps. After the successive Cube (1997), Cube 2: Hypercube (2002), and Cube Zero (2004), there were reports circulating that we may return to this boxy sci-fi universe with a reboot directed by original helmer Vincenzo Natali. While that hasn’t lifted off the ground yet, a Japanese remake has and today brings the first footage.
Led by Suda Masaki, Okada Masaki, Tashiro Hikaru, Saito Takumi, and Yoshida Kotaro, the Shimizu Yasuhiko-directed feature was shot last fall, with Natali on board as a creative advisor. Ahead of a release in Japan this October, the first teaser introduces our group who have been trapped and death is impending––unless they can escape.
“No one can resist the powerful system of the Cube,” Shimizu tells Variety. “In making this film, it was as though we entered the Cube itself. (That was because we shot the entire film in one place.) We then had to confront ourselves. What...

Hereditary was so 2018.
Writer-director Ari Aster returned this year with Midsommar, and though it’s a good idea to always approach new horror movies with a sense of cautious optimism, Aster’s sophomore effort certainly lived up to the hype.

It contained 17,576 rooms filled with life-ending obstacles. The titular object in Vincenzo Natali's 1997 thriller, Cube, foreshadowed the psychological and physical torment of the Saw traps to come. If you were unlucky enough to wake up inside it, you were going to have one hell of a time trying to get out. Lionsgate, however, is willingly returning to the cube's confines. The studio is moving forward on a remake of the original film, with a director, writer, and pair of producers already in place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saman Kesh is lined up for the director's chair on the Cube remake, which is titled Cubed. Kesh, who helmed the impressive sci-fi short, Controller, will work from a screenplay by Philip Gawthorne (based on a story angle by Kesh). Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts are producing the project, with Vertigo's Adam Stone overseeing it.

Director: Drew Goddard.
Writers: Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.
Cast: Fran Kranz, Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Jesse Williams, Kirsten Connolly, and Anna Hutchison.
Joss Whedon has rightly earned the title of being the Joseph Campbell of “horror” films with Cabin in the Woods. With Drew Goddard on board as co-writer, they have crafted a new world that plays with the very first images this film starts with: ancient civilizations conducting ritual sacrifices.
But how many viewers will even take notice about the first few frames? There is more of a mystery with the introduction of the two middle-aged men Sitterson (Richard Jenkins) and Hadley (Bradley Whitford) chatting away before the title screen splashes on top.
To say too much of the story will spoil the surprises this film makes. All audiences need to know about this movie is that it also involves five college co-eds out to simply have some weekend fun.

For the uninitiated, the Cube films are under-seen gems.
The first film, Cube, opens in a cubic room, with the unfortunate occupier immediately sliced and diced by an unseen booby trap. We then meet more prisoners, who realise that they can can move from one cubic room to the next in any direction, with some rooms lethally booby-trapped and numeric codes at each doorway giving a clue as to the way to proceed. It was stripped-down sci-fi at its finest – no spoon-feeding or easy answers and lots of imaginative use of a shoe-string budget.
Cube 2: Hypercube expanded well on the first film’s premise, introducing time loops into the Cube, but continuing with the pleasingly imaginative booby-traps and grisly deaths. Kind of like Saw, but with skill, craft and inventiveness rather than unpleasantness for its own sake. Cube Zero then went back to before the first film, showing more...

Before Saw, there was Cube. I never got into Horror around then, but the original in 1997 was praised for its original approach to horror, a genre that had only just reached its peak -- this was way before the reboot/remake era...thank god. Not surprisingly it was followed by a sequel, Cube 2 which wasn’t panned -- but then it was proceeded by a prequel titled Cube Zero. By that time the series had run dry.
The next logical step for a marginally successful Horror movie is a remake/reboot. So what do you think they went and did? Styd tells us that LionsGate will be putting together another film, though whether sequel, prequel or reboot is uncertain. Although I’m fairly certain that a sequel after several years out of the public eye is out of the question.
All they have for us so far is a title: Cube 3D.

When Vincenzo Natali‘s Cube was released in 1997, it caught the attention of audiences and critics alike because of its original approach to horror, a genre that was cluttered with sequels (this was a little bit before the remake/reboot craze hit). Ironically but unsurprisingly, that original film was followed up by a sequel, Cube 2. Reviews weren’t too bad, but by the time the third film – a prequel titled Cube Zero - was released, the series’ well was starting to run dry. So, what do you do with a horror franchise that’s been out of sight for years and years?
You reboot it! In 3D!
Styd tells us that Lionsgate, the studio that brought us Saw, is planning to revive the series. I was being a tad facetious when I said it’d be a reboot; we don’t actually know what form the movie will take. It...

Briefly: Before there was Saw there was Cube, the twisty horror/thriller series created by Vincenzo Natali (Splice) that featured groups of people trying to escape number-coded trapped rooms that are part of a maze-like structure. The series was made up of the original 1997 film and two follow-ups, a sequel and a prequel, in 2002 and 2004 respectively. Now Styd [1] says that LionsGate is putting togehter another film, though whether sequel, prequel or reboot is uncertain. All the site has is a title, possibly a placeholder: Cube 3D. Check out trailer for the earlier films in the series after the break, should you need a refresher. Here's the trailer for Cube, followed by the trailer for the sequel: Finally, here's the trailer for Cube Zero, which offers a look beyond the walls of the cube, though not always to good effect. Styd is reporting that Lionsgate is currently fielding pitches for Cube 3D. No definitive word yet on whether the new film is being considered a sequel or a reboot, though I expect that would depend on what they are pitched.
I'm sure Quiet Earth readers need no introduction to the 1997 Canadian scifi movie from Vincenzo Natali (Splice), but if so, it's about a group of people who find themselves trapped inside a never ending series of cube rooms full of deadly traps.
Cube spawned the 2002 sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, directed by Andrzej Sekula, and a third film, Cube Zero, which is actually a prequel, showing us an early, lower tech version of the cube.

And why wouldn.t they be? Their last horror franchise, Saw, has just mercifully hit the end of its seven-movie-too-long run, so the distributor will need to fill that void with something and it might as well be another horror franchise they can run into the ground with 3D. Directed by Vincenzo Natali, who recently released Splice, Cube hit theaters in 1997 and follows the story of seven kidnapped strangers who find themselves trapped in a cube of cubes, trying to navigate through the traps each cube may or may not contain. It was a great piece or psychological horror and even had a dash of comedy thrown into the mix, quickly becoming a cult favorite. It was followed up by Cube 2: Hypercube, an ambitious but failed outing by Reservoir Dogs cinematographer Andrzej Sekula. The latest in the Cube series, Cube Zero, was a prequel to the original and tied...

Years before Vincenzo Natali introduced us to Dren in Splice he directed an extremely low budget sci-fi flick called Cube that screened at Sundance and became a cult classic. Then came the sequel Cube²: Hypercube and even a straight-to-dvd prequel called Cube Zero six years back - and apparently it's coming back again. ShockTillYouDrop is reporting they've heard a Cube 3D is now in development. However, they don't know whether it'll be a remake, reboot or another sequel, but it sounds like it's going to be a quasi-remake/sequel, playing in the same "cube" world but with 3D. Maybe they're looking for a replacement for the Saw movies? In the first Cube, a group of people find themselves inside of a series of connected cube-shaped rooms, each one with a door on all six walls; some lead to another room with a deadly trap (like Saw), others eventually lead to...

Lately we know Vincenzo Natali as the director of the excellent Splice, but back in 1997 he was getting attention as the brains behind the micro-budget, super-inventive Cube. Further instalments from other directors emerged in the early 2000s, and after a bit of a lull following Cube 2 and prequel Cube Zero, rights holders Lionsgate are now looking to get back into the Cube business, with Cube 3D.The Kafkaesque premise of Natali's original sees a handful of strangers dropped into the titular edifice, with no idea of why they're there (someone must have been telling lies about them). The structure is divided into an unknown number of cube-shaped rooms which, it transpires, are mostly lethally booby-trapped. Progressing through the cube and solving the code that identifies the safe rooms becomes the name of the game. It's a tense psychological thriller, cleverly filmed on a single set, and like the Cube itself,...

What is “Movie of the Day?” This is where we showcase one movie every day and explain why we love this movie. This is just for fun and for you to get to know If It’s Movies a little bit better.
Too often is this film compared to Saw, which should be just the opposite. The two movies are very similar in that people wake up surrounded by traps, although I believe Cube did it much better. In Cube, the people don’t know they’re surrounded by traps until it’s too late, at least it’s too late for a few of them. During the course of the movie, the six main characters eventually meet and start traveling through the cube together. As the story progresses, we learn more about each of the characters and learn what kind of special skill each one posses. These skills they...

Scott Adkins a badass. The kickboxer can fight like hell, and he has done so in a lot of movies, from direct-to-video gems like “Undisputed II” and “Undisputed III”, to big screen hits like “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “The Bourne Supremacy”. It is now confirmed that he will reteam with Jean-Claude Van Damme for the upcoming Jcvd vehicle “Weapon”, about a pair of rival assassins forced to form an uneasy alliance. The two originally appeared together in 2008, when Adkins played Van Damme’s nemesis in “The Shepherd: Border Patrol”. Set to start shooting in Romania next month, the picture is being produced by Sony Home Entertainment, which means that it will go straight to the home market. That doesn’t automatically count against it, since a lot of my favorite recent action movies popped up in the Dtv realm. Vinnie Jones is also cast, and Ernie Barbarash (“Cube Zero” and “Stir of Echoes”) will direct.

Oh, yes please.

The film is backed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment so it's going to go straight to video but fight fans in the know have long known that Adkins is one of the truly great screen fighters in the world today and his pairing with Jcvd can do nothing but help his profile. And as Adkins has proven amply with the Undisputed pictures, being Dtv is no deterrent to quality ...

Those with rich, rewarding lives may be unaware of the fact that both Val Kilmer and Cuba Gooding, Jr. have become the undisputed kings of the direct-to-video market, outranking both Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme in terms of overall output. Kilmer’s face can be found on an unusually large number of new titles released over the past six months, with Cuba coming in at a very close second. It’s sad, really, especially considering these guys are capable of so much more. Truthfully, the only thing left for these two fallen stars to do is appear in the same movie together, perhaps a sci-fi yarn about a guy with a strange implant surgically grafted onto his brain. Lance Henriksen and Michael Ironside should definitely co-star. “Hardwired,” directed by “Cube Zero” mastermind Ernie Barbarash, valiantly attempts to harness the Dtv power of Val Kilmer and Cuba Gooding, Jr., though judging from the trailer,...

"When an ant appears on the factory belt, a worker's life changes forever."
A Worker is making aerosol cans on a Tayloresque factory floor.
The routine of his job is wrecked when an ant crawls into his machine. The game of cat and mouse, fueled by paranoia and hatred, begins and ultimately ends with the destruction of the machine that provides the Worker's livelihood.
The ant, feeling guilty, tries to help reconstruct the machine. From this moment, the Worker begins to realise that there is more to being human than his life to that point has lead him to believe.
Set in what appears to be a totalitarian, socialist, industrial retro-future; Aerosol is a very visually appealing short film. The set design is very reminiscent of Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet's The City of Lost Children as well as later features such as Ernie Barbarash's horror sequel Cube Zero.

Just a few weeks ago we told you that Ernie Barbarash (Cube Zero, They Wait) had been tapped to direct Hybrid, a comic adaptation that follows vacationing college students stalked by a mutant creature from the deep, for Studio 407 and Myraid Pictures. Today it was announced that they'll be reteaming once again with an adaptation of a new vampire horror film entitled The Night Projectionist. "Projectionist" marks the second title produced under Studio 407's first-look deal with Myriad -- the first being the comicbook "Hybrid," which is tentatively scheduled to begin production later this year. The story takes place on Halloween Eve in a small-town movie theater, where an all-night Draculathon draws throngs of moviegoers who suddenly find themselves locked inside the theater, which is slowly filling with vampires.

Studio 407 has announced a deal for its Hybrid series to become a motion picture to be directed by Ernie Barbarash (Cube Zero). The four issue miniseries has garnered good reviews and a trade collection will be released from Bluewater Productions on February 25.
The deal is part of an earlier agreement granting Myriad Pictures (Jeepers Creepers II) a first-look partnership. Production on the film, which has yet to be cast, is expected in 2009.
Written by Peter Kwong, the story focuses on four friends who rent a schooner then discover a derelict trawler. When they spot a little girl waving to them, they feel compelled to offer assistance but quickly discover she is not alone. The story has ecological themes in addition to thrills, blood, and mutant creatures.
Studio 407 is a small studio run by managing director and film producer Alex Leung (Around the World in 80 Days).

"This was a real opportunity to take an old fashioned genre, the classic monster story, and bring it into the 21st century," says Hybrid writer Peter Kwong. That always makes it more interesting as a writer, and, I hope, the audience will agree."

Right now I only have two steelbook dvd's in my collection and I consider them both treasures. They are The Quiet Earth and David Lynch's Dune, and I've often wished that more films were released in this style of packaging. For one thing they look awesome and, as I've stated before, I'm something of a nutter for nice packaging. But even more importantly, it means that my collection has a better chance of surviving the apocalypse.
What if I told you that in Germany virtually every film, be it big or small budget, is released in beautiful steelbook dvd? Not only that but the artwork is kick ass across the board? Don't believe me? Take a gander at some awesome examples after the break.
Thing's that made me jealous:
- The Mist (or Die Nebel) is available in a massive 3-disc steelbox in Germany.
- I actually want to own Cube Zero now.

Today Slashfilm and THR have both pointed out that The Dark Knight will likely not reach and beat Titanic will the highest domestic box office total. The reson cited is that even though Warner Bros. hasn't come out and said it, they will likely roll out the DVD in time for the holidays. Which would be the smartest move for financial reasons of course. It seems that cinema has really changed in just 10 years really. The advent of DVD has given studios huge profit and has even spawned the "sequelitis" with films like Lost Boys 2, Cube Zero and several other straight to DVD sequels. The market h...
