- In retail Half-Life 2 the combine sniper rifle was louder and could be heard being cocked after each shot, this is most likely because the Combine Snipers wielded cut bolt-action Sniper Rifles. However, in Episode One and Episode Two the rifle appears to be suppressed and makes a 'wind up' sound after each shot. After the May 2010 Half-Life 2 update this was retconned, so that HL2 snipers now employ 'pulse' rifles too.
- Shotgun Soldiers appear throughout Half-Life 2 and its episodes in the console versions of The Orange Box, but originally only appeared in Episode Two on PC. As of the May 26, 2010 updates, Shotgun Soldiers appear in Half-Life 2 and Episode One on PCs as well as consoles. This also adds red goggle-wearing Nova Prospekt guards to the PC version of Half-Life 2. In the Half-Life 2 port for the original xbox there are no Shotgun Soldiers because the game was released in 2005, two years before the orange box.
- In the original Xbox version of Half-Life 2, the combine binoculars cannot be found. Resistance Station 6 - In the PC version of Half-Life 2 there are more shantytown structures, more connections to the canals, and two less loading points than in the original Xbox version of the game. The smoother and shinier Vortigaunt model used in Episode Two are used in Half-Life 2 and episode one in The Orange Box.
- To secure the USK-18 rating, the German version is censored by re-coloring the red blood to gray, corpses disappear faster, and bones from Barnacles cannot be picked up. In 2017, the game was removed from the BPjM index list and since then Valve offers a uncut patch for German Steam players.
