In 1964, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” made its television debut. Since then, it’s become a staple of holiday viewing.
The special is fifty years old this year and its charm still hasn’t worn out. It’s narrated by a snowman, voiced by Burl Ives (who oddly enough carries a banjo that he never uses during the show), and contributed “Holly Jolly Christmas” to the playlist of Christmas music that seems to be everywhere as soon as November starts. And, while Rudolph is purportedly the star of the show, other characters seem to have resonated more with the audience.
I remember watching “Rudolph” every year when I was little. That was how I knew that Christmas was coming, it was one of the major signs. There were other things I looked for, the Christmas lights being strung up on Main Street in town right after Thanksgiving, with giant tinsel pieces...
