Sometimes, dead is better.
If you buy Wayforward’s horror action/puzzle game Lit on Steam right now, you’ll get a 2D game about using light sources to find your way through a series of darkened rooms, with an art style that makes it look like a lost episode of “Danny Phantom.” It’s alright for what it is.
That’s not the original Lit, though. The first Lit is a “dead” game from 2009, which went down with the ship when Nintendo closed the WiiWare shop in 2019, and which was one of the best-kept secrets on the Wii. The currently-available version of Lit is a 2015 “reimagining” for iOS/Android that comes off like a Saturday-morning cartoon version of the 2009 game.
It’s a weird situation for a dead game. Lit has been reincarnated, so to speak, but as an arguably worse version of itself.

The “Spongebob” prequel series “Kamp Koral” is moving from Nickelodeon to CBS All Access, where it will debut next year as part of the rebranded service.
The series will see a 10-year-old SpongeBob during his summer at the eponymous camp. In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral. “SpongeBob SquarePants'” Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller will co-executive produce the prequel.
It won’t be a 2-dimensional cartoon like the flagship “SpongeBob.” It will instead be computer-generated animation. The move follows last month’s announcement that “The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run” from Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies is skipping theaters and will premiere on premium Video On Demand, followed by a debut exclusively on CBS All Access early next year.

Even if parents are going batty trying to keep their little ones entertained while cooped up at home during this pandemic, they’re not necessarily plunking the kids in front of the TV — not linear TV at least. Meanwhile, certain streaming services are seeing a lift in interest, underscoring the next generation’s shift in television viewing habits.
For the week of March 23-29, viewership of ad-supported kids’ linear cable networks — a group that includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Xd and others — slid 3% from the comparable week in March 2019, according to Bernstein research analysts, citing Nielsen figures. And that year-over-year decline actually marks a major improvement: prior to shelter-in-place measures being implemented, weekly viewership of those channels among 2- to 11-year-olds had been plummeting an average of 25% since the start of 2020.

As Pocket.watch builds a lineup of original programs and a roster of partners, it is turning to several high-profile creators, several of whom have roots in TV. Its latest deal is with Butch Hartman, an animator best known for creating the shows The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, both of which aired on Nickelodeon.
Hartman will serve as a Senior Creative Consultant for Pocket.watch. In that role, he will advise the company on its content and partnerships. He is also set to create at least three original animated shows for the platform. “Butch Hartman is a creative force that has an uncanny ability to develop worlds that make kids stop, take notice and laugh out loud,” said Albie Hecht, Chief Content Officer at pocket.watch, in a press release. “I am thrilled to once again be working together on an entirely new slate of exciting properties, including our animated series for HobbyKidsTV.

Butch Hartman has a long and storied history of creating great cartoon shows. Not only is he responsible for The Fairly OddParents, the second longest-running Nicktoon on Nickelodeon, but he’s also created several other popular shows including Danny Phantom and T.U.F.F. Puppy. And now here he is once again with a unique new Nickelodeon show, Bunsen is a Beast.
Bunsen is a Beast is a cartoon about Bunsen (voiced by Jeremy Rowley), the first beast to be integrated into the Muckledunk Middle School, and his new human friend Mikey Munroe (Ben Giroux). It also features self-appointed school safety monitor and beast-hater Amanda Killman (Kari Wahlgren) and a collection of other oddball characters such as Ms. Flap (Cheri Oteri) and Darcy, who circle the main pair during their adventures.
But what is a Beast, per se? Well, in Hartman’s creation, even within the Beast world there appears to be great variety,...

Today, on his YouTube channel, he took some more modern cartoons such as Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls and redrew them within his universe.

As you undoubtedly know, San Diego’s Comic-Con International happened this past weekend, and I was fortunate to be amongst the tens of thousands of attendees. There was, as always, a mega-ton to see and do, and it was hard to keep the Fomo (Fear Of Missing Out) from getting completely out of control over the 4.5 days of the con. To stay sane, though, at some point you just have to accept that you’re going to miss a bunch, and focus on what you do have the opportunity to see.
This year, one of my main interests was what Nickelodeon was showcasing. Of course, Nickelodeon is always on my radar, and particularly the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, which I adore. But even beyond the coolness that is the Tmnt, this year, Nickelodeon was focusing on its past – in the best way possible. Through its late-night programming block of “The Splat,...

Warner Bros. Animation continues to pump out movie straight to DVD DC Comics movies, and today it's been announced that they are developing Justice League Doom which will be inspired by Mark Waid's Tower of Babel storyline.
The story finds Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Cyborg and Batman on their heels when a team of super villains discover and implement the Dark Knight’s “contingency plans” for stopping any rogue Justice League member. The film stars the voice talent of Nathan Fillion, Kevin Conroy, Michael Rosenbaum and Tim Daly.
The DC comics animated movie are hit and miss for me. Some I like other I hate. The most recently film I saw was Batmas: Year One, and even though the animation was good, I didn't care for how it was brought to life. The direction was off, especially with the voice acting.

I took my inspiration more from Big Wolf on Campus, Buffy, and Danny Phantom and the l…...

Butch Hartman struck Nickelodeon gold (Orange? Slime?) when he created The Fairly OddParents, a duo of fairies who attempted to improve the lives of their two wards but often just made things more complicated via magic. The animation style was crisp with bold black and white outlines making the series sleek but still very cartoonish. About three years into the successful run of OddParents, Nickelodeon gave Hartman a second series, Danny Phantom, which, while retaining the same visual style foundation of his first series, received a slightly more mature twist to its aesthetic. Unfortunately, the visuals were the only real twist made and the Danny Phantom never managed to acquire the same wit or sense of creative wonder that made OddParents enjoyable across a spectrum of age groups. What Hartman delivered instead was a product with the same amount of flair but an episodic formula that could have been just...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

[1] Disney animator Robb Pratt [2] has created a short hand-drawn animated Superman fan film which features a 1950's-like sci-fi take with Superman battling a huge robot who is destroying Metropolis. Without credits, the short is under one-minute in length, but still a stunning achievement considering Pratt produced, directed and storyboarded the idea himself, and animated the film with two others. The short is based on classical elements from early in the character's history -- Pratt references the architectural work of Hugh Ferriss [3], and incorporates Mischa Bakaleinikoff’s music from the Superman live-action serial. Pratt worked on animated features like Tarzan, Hercules, Pocahontas, Fantasia 2000 and television series like Kick Buttowski, Kim Possible, Danny Phantom, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, and The Replacements. Clark Kent/Superman is voiced by John Newton, who atarred as a young Clark Kent in the late 1980's television series The Adventures of Superboy. While Zack Snyder's Superman movie...

Before starring in 2008’s Twilight, you might have seen Taylor Lautner in a couple of children’s films, but now, even cave-dwellers can’t miss this young star. At a mere seventeen years old, the world knows this young man’s name – and will be hard-pressed to forget it any time soon. Beginning as a martial artist, Lautner’s main goal in childhood life, it seemed, was karate. Adorned with numerous awards for his stellar and ahead-of-his-time talent at this craft, Lautner endlessly impressed on-lookers and was once laughingly accused of show-boating by one news anchor. Yet, that was not all Lautner was good at – or loved. When he was seven, he began to pursue an interest in acting. Taylor Lautner got his start back in 2001 as Kismet in Shadow Fury. Paying his dues in small featurette roles in such series as Summerland and The Bernie Mac Show, Lautner climbed...

TV Legend David Carradine has been found dead. The actor’s large span of roles included his iconic portrayal of Kwai Chang Caine on the show “Kung Fu.” Carradine would go on to play his own grandson in the follow up series “Kung Fu: The Legend Continues.” In his later years, Carradine became something of a pop-culture staple appearing on Lizzie McGuire, Danny Phantom, and a Jonas Brothers video, while continuing to appear in pivotal one-off “event” roles in films like Kill Bill - he was Bill - and Crank: High Voltage.
Carradine was in Thailand preparing to shoot a new film and apparently hung himself with the cord that controlled the curtains in his hotel room. So far, no one has come forward with any indication that the 72-year old actor had been suffering from any form of depression or mental illness. An ex-wife, Marina Anderson, was quoted as...

Nickelodeon is getting into the virtual-community business.
MTV Networks' kid-centric powerhouse is set today to launch Nicktropolis, an online environment for youngsters to chat, play games and watch video amid branded properties.
In Nicktropolis, kids can customize the appearance of an avatar with which they navigate a digital world complete with its own currency. The environment includes branded regions like Nicktoon Boulevard, where surfers can visit rooms inspired by such Nick shows as SpongeBob SquarePants and Danny Phantom. Avatars can interact with icons representing characters from the shows or cue up episodes for viewing.
Nicktropolis is a continuation of Nickelodeon's push in recent years into more interactive programming online. With the younger demos it targets emerging as the first generation to be as comfortable with the PC as the TV, Nick has put increasing emphasis on Nick.com and successive versions of a broadband player, TurboNick.
"It takes all the pieces that have been building over the years and puts them together," said Cyma Zarghami, president of Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.
