SEOUL, South Korea -- Taking advantage of a quiet period in Hollywood offerings, the Korean film industry is moving ahead with one of its strongest seasons for local product. The fall has long been viewed here as the hottest season because of the Chuseok harvest public holiday. "Chuseok is a holiday for the whole family," said Karen Moon, of major distributor-exhibitor and production house CJ Entertainment. "When children and mothers go to the movies, and they don't want to read subtitles, they want Korean movies." Marrying the Mafia, for example, has rocketed to more than 3.6 million admissions in its first four weeks. Mafia, a story of a gangster family trying to improve its reputation by marrying their daughter off to a respectable family, is poised to become the biggest local film of the year. The film is produced by Taewon Entertainment and distributed by Cinema Service. Meanwhile, over the past weekend, YMCA Baseball Team made its debut at the No. 1 spot, taking in nearly 500,000 admissions, beating the release of XXX.
