As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."
That last episode, which aired on January 11, 1988, was notable in that it was the first holodeck-forward episode of the series. The holodeck was, of course, introduced in the show's pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint," which explained to audiences that the Enterprise-d was equipped with...

Tracy Tormé, the vision behind Sliders and an early writer on Star Trek: The Next Generation, has passed away at the age of 64 from complications from diabetes.
Tracy Tormé’s work and contributions within the sci-fi genre made him famous to fans. As per his sister (via The Hollywood Reporter), he “always interested in UFOs — the serious side of UFOs — and in the Air Force pilots who had seen them.” While he only wrote for two seasons on The Next Generation – also serving as story editor – his touch undoubtedly gave the series the thrust it needed to set the tone for the remainder of the series. The greatest success of his career, however, may be Sliders, which he co-created with Robert K. Weiss. Such a following it had developed, when Fox canceled it after three seasons, Sci Fi picked it up for its remaining two. In total, Sliders had 88 episodes...

Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.

As well as making a recent guest appearance as the Wizard Of Oz in Once Upon A Time, Gorham played Betty’s love interest Henry Grubstick in Ugly Betty, was one of the main cast of Canadian sci-fi drama Odyssey 5, starred in cult teen show Popular and played the title role in sci-fi series Jake 2.0. Eric Lavallee: Name me three of your favorite “2014 discoveries”…
Nora Kroll-Rosenbaum: Plants Can Hear. Atmos. Stumbling Stones in Potsdam.
Lavallee: We read Nikole Beckwith’s Stockholm, Pennsylvania as psychological warfare —— what was the approach in audibly depicting Leia’s longing?
Kroll-Rosenbaum: Stockholm is a nuanced portrait of an incredibly complex situation. The music is full of possibility and openness. It comes in waves and breathes. It was important that the music leave room for interpretation, so that the audience could experience discovery along with Leia. Nikole paints in very clear and purposeful strokes, and the music is designed to be transparent in its motivation.
Kroll-Rosenbaum: There is a range of different kinds of music in the score. There is music that is about the outside, literally and figuratively. I built a harmonic structure out of two chords that sits somewhere between resolution and forward motion. I thought about ancient music,...

I’m a huge fan of the USA network, their slew of “Summer shows” are always a great mix of action and comedy – be it Psych, Burn Notice, Suits, White Collar or Covert Affairs, there’s always something interesting about the programmes they commission and many make the transition to the UK via one of the many satellite channels available. Dave had a huge hit with Suits, FX score big with Burn Notice and Really (one of the more obscure channels) managed to create a splash with Covert Affairs. After the huge success of season one, spy series Covert Affairs returns on DVD for a second season.

Peter Weller has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" sequel. Just who he'll be playing, though, is an open question.
The news of Weller's casting comes courtesy of Variety, which notes that Abrams and Co. are keeping the details of his role a secret for the time being. The news of Weller's casting comes courtesy of Variety, which notes that Abrams and Co. are keeping the details of his role a secret for the time being. He joins fellow newcomers Alice Eve and Benicio del Toro, who's playing the villain in the sequel; most of the 2009 film's cast will return as well.

I always loved the way an actor could show up in more than one role in the "Star Trek" universe, and it looks like Peter Weller is going to pull the same trick now as he steps up to play a major role in the new "Star Trek" sequel. He previously showed up in a two-episode guest role for "Star Trek: Enterprise," which of course is just part of his science-fiction resume. He is most famous for being the original (and in my world, only) Robocop, but he's also appeared on shows like "Odyssey 5" and in films like "Leviathan" or...

It’s been six years since Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled, marking the first time since Star Trek: The Next Generation’s premiere in 1987 that there wasn’t a television program set in that universe. Shortly after its cancellation, X-Men director Bryan Singer actually set out to pitch a new series to executives, but scrapped plans when J.J. Abrams was hired on for a new feature film. And Trek writer Roberto Orci has claimed via Twitter that there have been talks – if nothing else – of a possible animated series, much like Star Wars: The Clone Wars (but hopefully, unlike Star Trek: The Animated Series, which ran from 1973-74).
But Trekkers around the world can take solice in the fact that David Foster of 1947 Entertainment is closer than anyone else has been in bringing Starfleet back to living rooms. Foster began working on the idea with the late Kevin Severson,...

The superb Ryan Reynolds movie Buried, directed by Rodrigo Cortes, is finally released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 14th; the film tells the story of:
…the terrifying ordeal of Paul Conroy (Reynolds) who is not ready to die. When he wakes up six feet underground with no idea of who put him there or why, life for the unassuming truck driver suddenly, without warning, becomes a hellish nightmare for survival. Buried with only a mobile phone and a lighter, his contact with the outside world and ability to piece together clues that could help him discover his location are maddeningly limited. Poor reception, a rapidly draining battery and a dwindling oxygen supply become his worst enemies in a tightly confined race against time. Fighting panic, despair and delirium, Paul has only 90 minutes to be rescued.
Thanks to the guys at Icon we have two DVDs and one Blu-ray of Buried to giveaway!

Ah, the canceled TV series that leaves the whole show on a cliffhanger! A pretty decent list. Some of these -- like Odyssey 5 -- still kinda haunt me. NBC's highly-hyped The Event disappointed in the ratings. Oh, my Lord, they're talking about a third movie in the Bill & Ted (Excellent Adventure) series. As anti-sequel as I am, I actually think it could be kinda meta after all these years (not to mention after Reeves starring in The Matrix). The unstoppable folks over at Save Our Seeker are working on a campaign to get the People's Choice Award to include a new fantasy-related category (which, of course, they hope Legend of the Seeker would win).

I’ve long been a Chris Gorham fan, even though I’m not particularly sure why. I mean even back as far as Popular and Odyssey 5, two shows I didn’t actually like, but for some reason liked Chris in (we’re tight like that). I didn’t love Jake 2.0, or Medical Investigation either, and thus the story just keeps getting stranger. I can’t think of another actor that I equally look forward to, who has never been on a show that I particularly enjoyed.
Although, despite critical and ratings difficulties, I did rather enjoy the goofball antics of Harper’s Island. Well, until we found out the real story, and things got downright silly (the pretty obvious secret to the show is that the killer is the only person the show never tried to convince me might be the killer).
At any rate, I’ve always enjoyed his work,...

On Thursday, Aug. 19, Christopher Gorham got a late birthday present -- he was born Aug. 14 -- when USA Network renewed his freshman spy-caper drama "Covert Affairs."
"I got an email from one of our producers," he tells Zap2it, calling in from the show's Toronto location. "If I'd been on Twitter [as @Chris_Gorham], I'm sure I would have found out first through there, because that's where I usually find out the information on our ratings, before I hear from the producers or the network."
A veteran of several primetime shows -- including "Popular," Odyssey 5," "Jake 2.0," "Medical Investigation," "Out of Practice," "Harper's Island" and "Ugly Betty" -- Gorham has a theory why his latest show was picked up after only having premiered on July 13.
"The show has been reviewed so well, first of all, that even before we aired, we had value for the network," he says. "Because we backed it...

Showtime's new cancer comedy The Big C might not have been a winner in the supporting characters department (I'm talking to you, Oliver Platt and homeless brother who eats garbage) but it scored a ratings coup last night, earning over 1.5 million viewers total. Said the premium cable network in a press release earlier today: "The Big C delivered Showtime's largest audience in 8 years for an original series debut (Previously: Odyssey 5 on 6/21/02 with 1.155Mm)." Congrats, Laura Linney: You beat Odyssey 5, whatever that was! [EW]...

The prognosis for Showtime’s The Big C is excellent. I’m hearing last night’s debut of Laura Linney’s cancer dramedy scored the cable net’s best premiere rating in eight years and its best half-hour opener in 12 years. The official Showtime press release is after the jump…

This week: Actors who got their start playing gay, period films, and jokes about gay Republicans. Plus, “Ugly Betty” hottie Christopher Gorham speaks!
Have a question about gay male entertainment? Contact me here (and be sure and include your city and state and/or country!)
Q: Remember the old expression that after a nuclear holocaust, the only thing living will be cockroaches and Cher? I think we can also add Ugly Betty hottie Christopher Gorham (“Henry”) to their ranks. How many series has been in now? – Blue, Milwaukee, Mi
A: By my count, at least eight: Popular, Odyssey 5, Jake 2.0, Medical Investigation, Ugly Betty, Harper’s Island, and a new show, Covert Affairs, running right now on the USA Network. And this doesn’t include his multiple-episode gigs on Party of Five and Felicity.
What the secret to his success? He doesn’t have a clue, but he is...

This week’s episode of Fringe has a special guest star, particularly in the sci-fi world. Peter Weller, Robocop and Buckaroo Bonzai himself, is the subject of Thursday night’s episode “White Tulip,” playing a time traveler who Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his Fringe team investigate.
“The thing that really turned me on about it is, it’s a romantic,” Weller said in a conference call with the media. “It’s a guy who is going back in time and he’s making some serious sacrifices in terms of other people’s livelihood and well being, to get back and save his wife from dying in a ridiculous moment, a mistake that he made. He’s trying to find redemption and go back to the only person that really means anything to him. It’s just tremendously romantic and very moving. That alone was enough to make me want to jump in it.

5. Odyssey 5 (2002). What was it? Odyssey 5 had a great concept. Bunch of astronauts up on a routine spaceflight watch the Earth turn into a fireball and implode! Whilst the 5 surviving crew members of the Odyssey space shuttle contemplate their impending demise, they’re rescued by a mysterious being called the Seeker. It seems Earth [...]

Is Earth's number up?
A provocative new poster for Alex Proyas' apocalyptic thriller Knowing has popped up at Ain't It Cool, teasing a truly ultimate cataclysm, with the Earth itself on fire and disintegrating into numbers from the South Pole up. Assuming it's more than just a very cool promo image, it looks as if star Nicolas Cage really will have his hands full trying to prevent a bit more than your run-of-the-mill preordained apocalyptic disaster. The concept is not totally unprecedented though. It bears more than a passing resemblance to the opening sequence of Showtime's sci-fi series Odyssey 5, in which the earth dramatically explodes before your eyes. Interestingly, in that series too, the main characters, who have been sent back into the past, try to avert a literal planetary destruction about which they are the only ones in the know.
Next Showing: Knowing hits theaters March 20, 2009
