Chicago – One of the peculiar secrets … since revealed … in the new Apple TV+ series “High Desert” is that the icon Bernadette Peters portrays two characters. One is the mother (Rosalyn) of main character Peggy, and the other is mysterious actor Ginger who somehow ended up in California desert country. New episodes drop every Wednesday.
“High Desert” features Peggy Newman (Patricia Arquette), an ex-heroin addict who lives in arid California and needs a life change. That is difficult, for besides her visits to a local methadone clinic she is just barely holding on as a performer in Pioneer Town, a rundown tourist attraction. The only thing she desperately wants to cling to is the house of her deceased mother (Bernadette Peters), but her sister Dianne (Christine Taylor) is intent on selling it. Peggy needs to raise some extra cash, so she comes up with a plan to become a private investigator,...

What is the criteria for playing a character based on a factual person? How much artistic license is granted toward playing such a character in a fiction piece? Should an actor portray said character based on the knowledge or experience required for the role? Those are the ethical dilemmas at play in Victoria Linares Villegas’ sophomore feature Ramona. In the originally planned, Covid-thwarted fiction film, actor and casting director Camilla Santana plays the eponymous girl, a pregnant woman amidst the teen pregnancy epidemic in the Dominican Republic.
But the pandemic forced Villegas to make this preconceived idea into a documentary where the slightly older Santana interviews six tween / young-adult mothers to get an understanding of Ramona. She seeks the character’s authenticity by grasping their imaginations of how Ramona lives, her fashion style, physical appearance, body movement, and how she interacts with male bargoers. The consensus that Santana gathers is...

Ahead of its world premiere screening as part of Berlinale’s Generation 14plus strand, Alief has swooped on global sales to Dominican director Victoria Linares Villegas’s second non-fiction feature, “Ramona,” and has provided Variety exclusive access to its first look trailer.
After its Berlin run, “Ramona” is set for a North American bow at the True False Documentary Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri this March, where Linares will receive the Visionary Award.
A postmodern look into the class divide and lives of an already vulnerable population, the project has emerged as a documentary with glimpses of scripted narrative, which the director credits to the adolescents she interviewed; their predicaments became paramount.
“I started developing ‘Ramona’ in 2016 as a fiction film, about a pregnant teenager who escapes the outskirts of Santo Domingo in search of a casting call for her favorite telenovela,” Linares recounted in a statement.

True/False, the preeminent non-fiction festival, returned as an in-person event Thursday, drawing documentary notables and fans of their work to a Missouri college town for the first lineup under the artistic direction of Chloe Trayner.
There were 31 features and 19 short non-fiction films at the fest, which had more of an international tilt than usual and concludes March 6. Eight features, including “Fire of Love,” “I Didn’t See You There” and “The Territory,” had previously debuted virtually at Sundance in January, but screened for the first time for public audiences at True/False.
Their respective directors — Sara Dosa (“Fire of Love”), Reid Davenport (“I Didn’t See You There”) Alex Pritz (“The Territory”) – were among the filmmakers making the trek to Columbia for the 19th edition of True/False. Wallimage throws its weight behind 8 projects for its 101st edition - Production / Funding - Belgium
The Walloon Regional Investment Fund will support a variety of new works to the overall tune of €1.3 million. On the occasion of its 101st session, held under such very special circumstances, Wallimage’s Walloon Regional Investment Fund is throwing its weight behind 8 new film projects, as well as 2 considerable animated series projects. The first work supported by the fund is C’est de famille!, a debut feature film by young Belgian director Elodie Lélu, which follows in the footsteps of Manon, an introverted, 16-year-old teen who finds herself having to co-habit with her unbearable grandma Yvonne, a former militant feminist now unable to live alone. The situation intensifies when Yvonne becomes confused and starts to believe Manon is her daughter… Toplining the film, we find the likes of young Belgian actress Fantine Harduin (the heroine of Fabrice du Welz’s Adoration) alongside Bouli Lanners and Hélène Vincent. Diane Keaton is the action hero moviegoers deserve.
Over the weekend, the Oscar winner, 74, shared a laugh-out-loud funny mashup that inserted her First Wives Club character, into a particularly violent scene from last year’s John Wick 3. The comedic blend sees Keaton’s Annie from the 1996 comedy preaching pacifism to Keanu Reeves, as he engages in a brutal knife fight with several adversaries.
“I thought we were supposed to be helping each other, not ripping each other to shreds!” Keaton shouts in the scene, edited to appear as if she’s scolding Wick and his assailants.

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look at Bob Clark‘s holiday classic, ‘A Christmas Story‘. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
‘A Christmas Story’ (1983)
Director: Bob Clark
Screenplay: Jean Shepherd, Leigh Brown & Bob Clark based on the novel ‘In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash,’ by Jean Shepherd
I know there’s a lot of people out there who regret the commercialization of ‘A Christmas Story‘ and sure, it’s totally out-of-hand. There’s a live televised version of ‘A Christmas Story‘ that happened on TV recently, which is one of the more benign examples to occur. I’d be remissed if I didn’t bring up the egregious straight-to-dvd sequel they made a couple years ago to widespread scorn; if for no other reason than the fact that there already was a sequel to ‘A Christmas Story‘ out there!

Quinn’s paranoid delusions land him in hot water this week on Homeland. (Actually, that water looks quite cold.)
At first, he’s humbled, apologizing to Astrid for going Awol last week. But as soon as she heads out for a jog, he starts snooping around the cabin. In a drawer, he finds an envelope containing all of his pills, a wad of cash and a fake passport and IDs ready for him with the name “David Ekley.” Then he searches her car, finding a gun under the seat.

While the box office return on "Tron: Legacy" wasn't stellar — $400 million on a $170 million budget — it was enough to encourage Disney to keep the franchise going. In 2012, Jesse Wigutow ("It Runs In The Family," "The Crow" reboot) was hired to write the script, and Joseph Kosinski was attached to direct. And before the year was out, Garrett Hedlund himself confirmed he would be returning for the followup. And that was the last anyone heard for a couple of years, but it would appear things are ramping up. Local outlet Vancity Buzz is reporting that "Tron 3" will start shooting in Vancouver starting on October 5th, with Kosinski directing and Hedlund as the only confirmed cast member returning (for now). The green light has apparently already been given to the movie, and it hasn't taken long for more chatter to surface. Badass Digest has a source that also confirms the sequel...

The film is set in April 1945 as the Allies make their final push in the European Theater. In comics news this week, Matt Fraction, one of Marvel’s brightest stars and writer of the award-winning Hawkeye, has been replaced by Charles Soule as the writer of the upcoming new Marvel series, Inhuman, though Joe Madureira remains the series artist. No reasons were given for the switch nor for pushing back the release date from January to April. Inhuman spins off of the Marvel Event Infinity where thousands of new Inhumans appeared after Black Bolt exploded a Terrigen Bomb, with the series looking at the changed lives of the newly transformed Inhumans. Soule is a prolific comics writer, currently helming Superman/Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing and Red Lanterns for DC, Letter 44 for Oni, and Thunderbolts for Marvel along with the new She-Hulk series set to debut in February.
DC are going to end two of their original New 52 line-up titles, Animal Man and The Dark Knight, early next year.

"A Christmas Story" hit movie theaters on November 18, 1983 and the holiday would never be the same.
Now, we can't help but think of being "double-dog dared," leg lamps, and, of course, a Red Ryder Bb gun. The period movie wasn't a hit when it was released, but has became a holiday favorite over the years, even being run in a 24-hour marathon at Christmas time on TBS. It yielded a lesser-seen sequel in 1994, "It Runs in the Family," which recast all the major roles.
In 2012, the film received two honors: Being selected for preservation by the Library of Congress and opening on Broadway as a hit musical. "A Christmas Story: The Musical" received three Tony Award nominations and is returning to the stage this year in Boston, New York's Madison Square Garden and Hartford, Connecticut.

Actor best known as the haughty department store supervisor Captain Peacock in the TV comedy Are You Being Served?
The actor Frank Thornton, who has died aged 92, had a flair for comedy derived from the subtle craftsmanship of classical stage work. However, he will be best remembered for his longstanding characters in two popular BBC television comedy series – the sniffily priggish Captain Peacock in Are You Being Served? and the pompous retired policeman Herbert "Truly" Truelove, in Roy Clarke's Last of the Summer Wine.
Robertson Hare, the great Whitehall farceur, told him: "You'll never do any good until you're 40." And, said Thornton, "he was quite right." In the event, he was 51 when David Croft, producer of another long-running British staple, Dad's Army, remembered the tall, long-faced actor from another engagement and decided to cast him as the dapper floor-walker in charge of shop assistants played by Mollie Sugden, Wendy Richard,...

There's a new man in the frame for the reboot of The Crow. And that man is James McAvoy...
On paper, a cinematic reboot of The Crow is hardly the kind of project to get people over-excited. Personally though, I look at it the same way as I do the RoboCop reboot: sure, the original is great and it doesn’t necessarily need rebooting, but it’s hard to argue that a new reboot is going to ruin the original any more than the number of shoddy sequels that have been released since.
It's been some time since The Crow reboot was last discussed, and at one point, Mark Wahlberg was being mentioned as a potential lead. However, nothing seemed to come of that. Now though, there's a new name in the frame to take on the role of Eric Draven (so far most...

I honestly forgot this film was even happening, but, despite my poor memory, Relativity Media hasn’t given up on their reboot of The Crow.
Bloody Disgusting broke the news a while back that Mark Wahlberg was being eyed for the film, but luckily that casting never happened. Now the guys at Bd are telling us Relativity is looking to James McAvoy to take on the role of Eric Draven.
There’s no doubt McAvoy is a better actor than Wahlberg, and would bring a great deal of depth to the tortured soul that is Draven, but I still question whether this film is even needed. Didn’t Brandon Lee and director Alex Proyas nail this character the first time around?
F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall) is still attached to direct from a script by Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family), based on James O’Barr’s comic.

Earlier this month, we learned that Disney is moving forward with a third "Tron" movie by hiring Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family) to write the script. Then came word that Garrett Hedlund will reprise his role and Joseph Koskinski will return to direct. Now, in an interview with Collider, Kosinki revealed that he signed on for the third film because he feels the story is big enough and good enough. "I've said it would have to be our 'Empire Strikes Back' for me to come back and for me to pull the whole team back together," he said. "I think we do have that idea." Kosinski continued: "We have [an] idea that feels big. [We've been hinting at it] for two movies now, for thirty years. So it's time to deliver on that. There could be another 'Tron' in the next few years, and it's going to be awesome." When asked how much time...

Even though a sequel arrived 28 years after the first innovative sci-fi Tron film, Disney head honcho Alan Horn has put the next Tron project on the fast track.
Therefore, writer Jesse Tigutow has been hired to write a new draft for the project that still has Joseph Kosinski attached to direct. In the summer of 2011 David Digilio wrote an earlier draft of the Tron 3 script.
Wigutow previously wrote 2003s It Runs In The Family, the screenplay that is a very different one to Tron, and has been at work on Parallels and Peter And The Starcatchers for Disney as well as a remake of The Crow, and a do-over of The Osterman Weekend.
It’s not clear is Wigutow taking a stab at re-writing a draft penned by Digilio or if he’s starting over, planning something less costly than Tron: Legacy.

It's been about two years now since Tron: Legacy hit theatres, and although the movie was a bit of a disappointment both critically and commercially, it did end up making just over $400 million worldwide. Last year there were rumours that Disney was on the verge of announcing a sequel, but when no announcement immediately came, many assumed that the franchise was dead. Not so apparently, as this week the Tron: Legacy sequel has come back online and shifted to a high priority at the Mouse House. Disney's new head honcho Alan Horn has taken an interest in the project and wants to make it a reality; as a result, the studio has hired a new writer to pen the script. According to THR, Disney has recruited Jesse Wigutow (It Runs in the Family) to write a new draft of a script for a project tentatively titled Tron 3. A previous...
