Terry thinks that he has cracked the meaning of life - sexy and solvent at 50 years of age. He keeps himself fit with the latest craze (Thai kick boxing). His friends - James, Patrick and Gary - are the same age and in the same salary bracket. With the exception of Gary, who is desperately clinging to the idea that marriage - even after 26 years - can be as exciting as his friends' exploits, they hang out in trendy bars and hope to impress the girls with time-honored seduction techniques (money, champagne and charm).

James asks for Patrick's advice when he decides to invest some of his savings in a collectible painting. Patrick is reluctant to help, but swayed when the others persuade him to give his art advice in exchange for a look at the results of James' corrective surgery - designed to solve his problems in the bedroom. Terry meanwhile encounters generation gap issues with his young girlfriend, Sonja. He performs an intricate series of morning ablutions - shaving, flossing, and slapping on after-shave - before returning to bed and pretending to wake up with his 25-year-old girlfriend, Sonja. As Terry and Sonja struggle to come up with post-coital conversation, Patrick and James wander around an art gallery. Patrick is knowledgeable and passionate about art, frustrating James who only wants Patrick to tell him which artwork would make the best investment. Gary, meanwhile, struggles to communicate with his monosyllabic teenage son, Wayne. Terry has brunch with Sonja but is totally thrown when, instead of his suggestion of eggs Benedict and bucks fizz, she asks for a burger and coke. At their regular steam at the Turkish baths, James nearly weeps with frustration when Patrick refuses to tell him what art will make him money, until he sees the opportunity to strike a deal. The others are desperate to see the effects of James' operation and Patrick agrees to tell him which artist to buy if he drops the towel. They all nod politely in front of the naked James, but privately, Terry and Gary are shocked at the scars and at the obvious fact that James has had an extension. At a loose end for the weekend, Terry tracks down his son, Justin, and asks him over for some quality time together. To his delight, Justin agrees but not before asking Terry for money. Terry prepares a lavish spread but eventually falls asleep waiting for Justin to arrive, while Gary and Wayne share a companionable moment watching 'The Simpsons.'

Terry wows his dance class with his salsa moves, reacting to the intense chemistry between him and the salsa teacher, Sylvia, as Patrick kills time in a fishing and shooting tackle shop. Hypnotized by Camilla, the rosy girl serving him, Patrick eventually leaves the shop with a pair of state-of-the-art waders. On a night out, Terry, Patrick, Gary and James follow Patrick to a lap-dancing club. While Terry and Patrick play it cool, James looks embarrassed and Gary gets completely carried away. He has a private dance from a beautiful Asian girl, Gitta, and is instantly smitten. The next day, James visits his doctor who tells him that it is fine for him to have sex again, and gives him a number to call. James finds himself at Miss Mia's but makes a quick exit when he realizes that Mia is an unattractive (and expensive) prostitute. In desperation, James asks his ex-wife, Elizabeth to help him get back in the saddle. When he approaches her, however, Elizabeth howls with laughter and James leaves, humiliated. Terry talks to Patrick about his planned seduction of Sylvia and is intrigued when Patrick gives him some tips on how to make things really interesting. Terry books a luxurious romantic weekend in Barcelona, in time for the Latin dance festival. Patrick goes back to the shop to see Camilla and tells her that he wants to buy a river to go with his new waders. Gary puts his foot in it with Cheryl, by suggesting monkfish instead of pizza for dinner, when Gait rings him. When he goes for a dip in the pool, Cheryl rings Gitta back and puts her straight about a few things. Terry arrives at his salsa class, first class tickets to Barcelona in hand, to find that Sylvia is on her honeymoon. As Patrick takes one look at a salmon river and shouts 'I'll take it,' Terry and James set off for Barcelona.

Terry, Patrick, James and Gary sit in the front row at London Fashion Week, pretending to admire the clothes but really ogling the models. Sonja gives Terry a flirty wave from the catwalk before being whisked away by the show's organizer, Justin. Terry is shocked that his son is actually working for a living but completely blown away by the news that Justin got the job through Christine's new boyfriend, the designer of the moment, Armando da Guerra. Feeling inexplicably jealous, Terry pays Christine a visit and is mortified to find his ex-wife looking fantastic and obviously blissfully happy. As Patrick spends time with the one woman he really loves (his mother who lies in a hospital bed, comatose and unresponsive), James finds Scarlet and asks for her forgiveness over what happened between them. She doesn't recognize him at first but readily assures him that the incident is forgotten. Terry decides to exercise his charm on Christine, inviting her to the opera with him, but she tells him that she has other plans, thoroughly enjoying her moment. Sonja arrives instead, horrifying Terry with her casual dress then dropping the bombshell that she is in love with someone else - Justin. All four friends go to the opera - Terry furious, James oblivious, Gary asleep and Patrick emotionally stirred. After the performance, Patrick puts them all in a limo and takes them to the hospital. His mother is made up and dressed in a beautiful gown and the room has been transformed by drapes and candles. They toast her with champagne as Patrick gives the doctor permission to turn her life support machine off. Terry, still smarting over Christine's new man, decides on a spot of retail therapy and is talked into buying a gorgeous russet linen suit. Feeling back to his old self in the sharp suit, his armor cracks again when the shop assistant informs him that the designer is Armando da Guerra.

Gary puts a stop to it, telling them that Patrick will come back in his own time. The ghillie's ruminations on the lifespan of the salmon hit home as he talks about the importance of the next generation. On the morning of the wedding, Terry is having a tantrum at having to go alone when Patrick turns up on his doorstep, breezily announcing that he and Terry are going to the church together.

Terry, kitted out in camouflage gear, takes aim at a state-of-the-art virtual quarry, set up for him at an exclusive rifle range. Distracted by his constant commentary on man's innate need to kill, Terry misses wildly, humiliating himself in front of his macho instructor. James, meanwhile, is suffering a different form of murderous intent, as his expensive oven is being slowly torn apart by a mouse. He sets a trap - and a webcam - for the squatting rodent. The friends all set off for a weekend of male bonding in the country, planning to 'kill things' - despite the fact that the only previous experience any of them have is the time James ran over a pheasant and then rushed it to a vet. Gary is thrilled at the chance to be on an equal footing with his friends at last, on a 'woman-free' weekend, but his heart sinks as they are greeted by the delectable Marilyn and Kerry, their hosts for the weekend. Patrick immediately turns on the charm with Marilyn, while James and Kerry bond over his mouse problem. After dinner, the old friends end up arguing about their chat-up lines, prompting an outburst from Gary, who is fed up with their adolescent exploits. He storms and rings his wife Cheryl, admitting that he misses her but having trouble convincing her that he's not drunk. Terry catches up with Gary in the grounds, where they share a moment of envy for each other's lives. Gary points out to Terry that Marilyn and Kerry must be a couple as there is only one room for them, and they gleefully decide not to share the information with Patrick and James, who are still desperately trying to impress the girls. Meanwhile, Kerry has horrified James by telling him that his mouse is pregnant. Glum from their rejections, Patrick and James hole up in James' room watching the 'mousecam,' and Terry and Gary soon join them. They all jump at Patrick's plan of racing back to London for a big night out, with the one proviso that James can stop off at his flat to remove the trap.
