The brutal sci-fi horror classic by Vincenzo Natali was so successful that it spawned Cube²: Hypercube (2002) and Cube Zero (2004). Natali stayed on as a creative advisor for the Japanese remake, with Kôji Tokuo writing the adapted screenplay.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Natali for the remake’s release on Screambox. The filmmaker revealed how he influenced the remake, including its director Yasuhiko Shimizu, and teased the trap he designed in the reimagining. The filmmaker reflects on his own film in the process.
Natali tells us how he got involved with the remake and why it appealed to him.

One of the coolest indie films of the late 1990s was Vincenzo Natali’s brutal sci-fi horror Cube, in which six strangers are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps. After the successive Cube (1997), Cube 2: Hypercube (2002), and Cube Zero (2004), there were reports circulating that we may return to this boxy sci-fi universe with a reboot directed by original helmer Vincenzo Natali. While that hasn’t lifted off the ground yet, a Japanese remake has and today brings the first footage.
Led by Suda Masaki, Okada Masaki, Tashiro Hikaru, Saito Takumi, and Yoshida Kotaro, the Shimizu Yasuhiko-directed feature was shot last fall, with Natali on board as a creative advisor. Ahead of a release in Japan this October, the first teaser introduces our group who have been trapped and death is impending––unless they can escape.
“No one can resist the powerful system of the Cube,” Shimizu tells Variety. “In making this film, it was as though we entered the Cube itself. (That was because we shot the entire film in one place.) We then had to confront ourselves. What...

It contained 17,576 rooms filled with life-ending obstacles. The titular object in Vincenzo Natali's 1997 thriller, Cube, foreshadowed the psychological and physical torment of the Saw traps to come. If you were unlucky enough to wake up inside it, you were going to have one hell of a time trying to get out. Lionsgate, however, is willingly returning to the cube's confines. The studio is moving forward on a remake of the original film, with a director, writer, and pair of producers already in place.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Saman Kesh is lined up for the director's chair on the Cube remake, which is titled Cubed. Kesh, who helmed the impressive sci-fi short, Controller, will work from a screenplay by Philip Gawthorne (based on a story angle by Kesh). Roy Lee and Jon Spaihts are producing the project, with Vertigo's Adam Stone overseeing it.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is preparing a remake of the low-budget sci-fi thriller Cube. The remake will reportedly be called Cubed, and like the first Cube, will strand a small group of people inside a mysterious cube, which itself is made up of multiple smaller cubes, many of which contain razor-wire grids that turn people into human cubes. If Cubed is a success, expect a remake of Cube 2: Hypercube, the Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo of Canadian sci-fi.

Arrow has cast a new Count Vertigo. TVGuide reports that Peter Stormare has been cast as Werner Zytle, who takes over the Count Vertigo name.
I’ve been trying to wrap my head around the idea of Lifetime’s The Lottery. At least, I’ve been trying to imagine how a drama about a dark future for humanity would work on Lifetime. Here’s the first trailer for the series:
This season, the winner of So You Think You Can Dance will win a role on the Broadway revival of On the Town — provided the show is running when there’s an opening in the cast.
Fringe alum Georgina Haig has been picked to play Elsa in Once Upon a Time‘s Frozen Storyline.
Morning After observes that seeing Tori Spelling‘s Mystery Girls so soon after her raw reality show True Tori finished makes her the real life version of The Combeback.

Conan the Barbarian was such a stunning flop when it opened to just $10 million last weekend that there wasn't even the usual round of Hollywood blame game-- everyone involved, from Lionsgate to Jason Momoa on down, seemed anxious to just stick their heads in the sand and forget the whole thing. Even Deadline, in their snarky "autopsy report" on the movie, could only decide that "the execution was just poor, poor, poor." Essentially, everyone had to bear the weight of this stinker. Including, as it turns out, one of the three credited screenwriters, Sean Hood, who has weathered other critical misfires like Halloween: Resurrection and Cube: Hypercube. This time, though, Hood took to the Internet to describe what it feels like to watch your movie tank, in a long and very thoughtful post at Quora. In some ways he's got some necessary distance from the process-- he argues, as many...

For the uninitiated, the Cube films are under-seen gems.
The first film, Cube, opens in a cubic room, with the unfortunate occupier immediately sliced and diced by an unseen booby trap. We then meet more prisoners, who realise that they can can move from one cubic room to the next in any direction, with some rooms lethally booby-trapped and numeric codes at each doorway giving a clue as to the way to proceed. It was stripped-down sci-fi at its finest – no spoon-feeding or easy answers and lots of imaginative use of a shoe-string budget.
Cube 2: Hypercube expanded well on the first film’s premise, introducing time loops into the Cube, but continuing with the pleasingly imaginative booby-traps and grisly deaths. Kind of like Saw, but with skill, craft and inventiveness rather than unpleasantness for its own sake. Cube Zero then went back to before the first film, showing more...

It’s been 14 years since the original Cube, from director Vincenzo Natali, graced us with its originality and great scares. According to Shock Til You Drop, there are reports that Lionsgate wants to return to the mysterious cube with either a direct sequel, a reboot or a remake of the original film. We’re not sure what the direction of this film will be going, but we do know the studio has it tentatively titled at Cube 3D.
The original Cube came out in 1997 and spawned one sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, and one prequel Cube: Zero. Both of those films fell way short of the original and lacked much of what we held so close to our hearts from the first film.

A return to the Cube universe is on it's way thanks to the folks at Lionsgate who are currently reviewing pitches for Cube 3D.
A source close to the project says it is either a direct sequel, a reboot or a redo of the 1997 sci-fi/horror thriller from director Vincenzo Natali (Splice), about "a group of strangers who were confined to a series of rooms, each one containing (or not) a lethal device." That movie came out before the studios Saw franchise.
There was a a sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, in 2002 which was directed by Andrzej Sekula, the cinematographer known for his work on Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. A prequel, Cube: Zero, followed.
This news is still very fresh, so keep an eye out for further updates. What are your thoughts, are you looking forward to Cube 3D?...

This news is still very fresh, so keep an eye out for further updates. What are your thoughts, are you looking forward to Cube 3D?...

It’s back to the “Cube” again. Lionsgate is soliciting pitches for “Cube 3D,” according to ShockTillYouDrop. It is not clear on whether the film would be the third part of a complete reboot of the franchise. In the original 1997 science fiction horror “Cube,” the tale is about seven complete strangers with different personalities involuntarily placed into a maze full of deadly traps. The original film was directed by Vincenzo Natali (“Splice,” “Ginger Snaps”). It starred Nicole de Boer (“Stephen King’s Dead Zone,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”), Maurice Dean Wint (“RoboCop: Prime Directives,” “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”) and David Hewlett (“Stargate: Atlantis,” “Splice”). There was also a follow up 2002 sequel called, “Cube 2: Hypercube.” In this version, eight strangers need to escape the “hypercube” and discovered they are in a strange fourth dimension where the laws of physics do not apply. The film was directed by Andrzej Sekula (“The Pleasure Drivers,...

Sources are telling Shock Til You Drop that Lionsgate is pitching to make Cube 3D. No, it’s not that Rubik’s Cube movie that supposedly in the works (here), or a spin-off film about The Allspark from Michael Bay’s Transformers. The film is a supposed to either be a sequel, remake, or reboot of the 1997 horror film Cube. The original film was directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice) about “a group of strangers who were confined to a series of rooms, each one containing (or not) a lethal device.”
The film somewhat preceded Lionsgate fixation with traps like the Saw franchise. However, the Cube only warranted one sequel in 2002 titled Cube 2: Hypercube and a prequel Cube: Zero. Although, the studio is probably looking for something to replace Saw now that the series has supposedly ended. No other details on the film are known at this time.

Styd is reporting that Lionsgate is currently fielding pitches for Cube 3D. No definitive word yet on whether the new film is being considered a sequel or a reboot, though I expect that would depend on what they are pitched.
I'm sure Quiet Earth readers need no introduction to the 1997 Canadian scifi movie from Vincenzo Natali (Splice), but if so, it's about a group of people who find themselves trapped inside a never ending series of cube rooms full of deadly traps.
Cube spawned the 2002 sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, directed by Andrzej Sekula, and a third film, Cube Zero, which is actually a prequel, showing us an early, lower tech version of the cube.

And why wouldn.t they be? Their last horror franchise, Saw, has just mercifully hit the end of its seven-movie-too-long run, so the distributor will need to fill that void with something and it might as well be another horror franchise they can run into the ground with 3D. Directed by Vincenzo Natali, who recently released Splice, Cube hit theaters in 1997 and follows the story of seven kidnapped strangers who find themselves trapped in a cube of cubes, trying to navigate through the traps each cube may or may not contain. It was a great piece or psychological horror and even had a dash of comedy thrown into the mix, quickly becoming a cult favorite. It was followed up by Cube 2: Hypercube, an ambitious but failed outing by Reservoir Dogs cinematographer Andrzej Sekula. The latest in the Cube series, Cube Zero, was a prequel to the original and tied...

Years before Vincenzo Natali introduced us to Dren in Splice he directed an extremely low budget sci-fi flick called Cube that screened at Sundance and became a cult classic. Then came the sequel Cube²: Hypercube and even a straight-to-dvd prequel called Cube Zero six years back - and apparently it's coming back again. ShockTillYouDrop is reporting they've heard a Cube 3D is now in development. However, they don't know whether it'll be a remake, reboot or another sequel, but it sounds like it's going to be a quasi-remake/sequel, playing in the same "cube" world but with 3D. Maybe they're looking for a replacement for the Saw movies? In the first Cube, a group of people find themselves inside of a series of connected cube-shaped rooms, each one with a door on all six walls; some lead to another room with a deadly trap (like Saw), others eventually lead to...

Lionsgate is presently fielding pitches for Cube 3D , a source tells us. That's right, it's either a direct sequel, a reboot or a redo of the 1997 sci-fi/horror thriller which actually preceded the Lionsgate's fixation on a certain franchise that also heavily utilized enclosed spaces, strangers and traps ( Saw ). The original Cube put director Vincenzo Natali ( Splice ) on the genre map and concerned a group of strangers who were confined to a series of rooms, each one containing (or not) a lethal device. Cube spawned a 2002 sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube , directed by Andrzej Sekula, the cinematographer known for his work on Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction . As a horror fan there is nothing more disheartening than hearing that a sequel is being made to a perfectly fine and contained original film. More often than not this means that there will be less emphasis on character and much more blood and guts, the villain will receive more screen time and lose their initial air of mystique, and creating a frightening arena and developing a scary tone will be disregarded to make room for laboured set pieces and exposition laden scenes.
Here are six of the stupidest horror sequels that did just that;
6.) Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’S Revenge
The original Nightmare on Elm Street was so scary because it captured the unknown and unpredictable quality of our nightmares. The fact that anything is possible in the surreal world of our dark imagination made the potential for horror limitless and the Wes Craven film capitalized...

Eight candidates are led into a room for the final portion of what appears to be a rigorous job application process. They have a piece of paper, and one question before them to answer. They are given explicit instructions on several things that will get them disqualified, including leaving the room. A clock is set eighty minutes and the events of Exam begin. The problem is, when they turn their paper over, it is completely blank.
The candidates soon realize that they will have to work together, at the very least, to figure out what the question is. Of course, this is an application process and "there can only be one", so as the tentative alliance forms it is very clear that their ties to each other aren't much thicker than the blank pieces of paper in front of them.

Okay, so we've officially got a franchise on our hands. The success of The Haunting in Connecticut already spawned one sequel that will be lensing soon, The Haunting in Georgia, but apparently there's one more on the way after that!
According to Variety horror scribe Sean Hood (Cube 2: Hypercube, Halloween: Resurrection) has been tapped to pen The Haunting in New York for Gold Circle Films. The studio noted that neither Georgia nor New York are direct sequels to Connecticut but instead are self-contained films with unique characters.
The Haunting in New York is based on the rights to "A Haunting: The Diabolical," a TV documentary that ran in 2006 on the Discovery Channel. "The Diabolical" was the second episode in the second season of the ongoing series. Check out the synopsis for the episode below.

Genre writer Sean Hood (Cube 2: Hypercube, Halloween: Resurrection) has been tapped to pen The Haunting In New York, which follows on the heels of last year's The Haunting in Connecticut and the soon-to-lens The Haunting in Georgia. Gold Circle is keeping the logline of the latest installment under wraps but said it will be based on a true story like the other two films (read inside for more). Hood posted an update to his blog this morning and added a few details. Haunting in Connecticut earned $77 million worldwide and spawned Haunting in Georgia, which Tom Elkins will begin helming in August. The Cube reloaded?
For those who have never seen it “The Cube” and its sequel “Cube 2: Hypercube” are about a group of people who find themselves trapped in a crazed maze of booby trapped rooms with absolutely no memory of how they arrived there. The premise is basically for them to utilize each of their individual skills to their advantage to somehow make it out alive. For those ready to explore the mysteries of “Persons Unknown” these movies make a good primer for what we are likely to see over the next 13 episodes. With that in mind, let the bafflement begin:

More behind-the-scenes goodies with this week's movie club picks:
Peter Hall offers a little something extra with his SciFi Squad pick Cube 2: Hypercube -- a chat with screenwriter Sean Hood. Hood offers up a little Q&A, concept art for the film, and the original draft script. That's pretty notable since, as Hood shares: "Virtually every word of my script was tossed. Some of the basic characterizations were kept... along with the concept of the cube as a 4-d hypercube."
Hall also cooked up some discussion for his Horror Squad pick: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road. Written and directed by Don Coscarelli (of Bubba Ho-Tep fame), Hall writes: "As a straight-forward narrative, this is just a familiar yarn about a damsel in distress (Bree Turner) in the mountains who fights back against the freak of nature (John DeSantis) who has kidnapped her. However, the heavy and consistent...

Look at Mickey Rourke in this picture for a bit. Almost like a chiseled warrior of old (minus the neon green armbands) looking up to Crom asking why the God has forsaken his only son, Conan. This could very well be an image we see again, as The Heat Vision Blog has confirmed what Latino Review scooped last month that Rourke has signed on for the small but important role of Conan’s father, Corin. Rourke will be joining Stargate: Atlantis’ Jason Momoa who has already signed on to play the titular warrior.
With news also coming down the pike that screenwriter Sean Hood has been brought in to do a script polish, it is looking like the Conan remake is in full swing. We won’t hold it against Hood that he also wrote Halloween: Resurrection, Cube 2: Hypercube, and The Crow: Wicked Prayer. We’ll just let those...

I might take flak from those out to bemoan current trends in Hollywood for saying this, but not all remakes are a bad idea. Take Conan the Barbarian, for example. Sure, the fantasy flick from '82 holds a special place in the heart of film geeks of a certain vintage, but set aside the rose-tinted nostalgia glasses and it's kind of clunky. That's why I'm intrigued to see what Millennium Films' forthcoming remake does with the pulp-rooted material.
