For countless fans of the romantic comedy, Hugh Grant will always be just a boy standing in front of a girl. But speaking with IndieWire for his single-episode guest appearance as Ed Keplinger in HBO’s “The Regime,” the 63-year-old British actor seemed blissfully out of touch with the genre that launched his stardom.
When asked about Hollywood’s rom-com resurgence, Grant said, “I didn’t know there was one. What should I watch?”
Since the summer that brought us “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” movies about meet-cutes and star-crossed lovers have strengthened their foothold in streaming while taking leaps forward at the box office. IndieWire suggested Grant try anything with Glen Powell, a standout rom-com stud also known for “Top Gun: Maverick” who has been described as this generation’s Grant on occasion.

The 34-year-old British actor Nicholas Hoult kicked off production last week on Warner Bros. Discovery’s next big bet: “Superman” with director James Gunn and actors David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. The star of “About a Boy,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and Hulu series “The Great” recently went on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast and talked a bit about preparing for the role of the evil mastermind Lex Luthor.
First, he complimented his new boss Gunn for making the audition process fun. He said he enjoyed the “Guardians of the Galaxy” auteur’s method of “try[ing] things in the moment, just shouting out from the monitors, ‘Say this line. Do this! Do that!’”
Then he added that even though Luthor is better known for his brains rather than his brawn, Hoult has been hitting the weights. “There’s that bit in ‘All-Star Superman’ [the Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely...

Rachel Weisz is the Oscar winner who has been very selective of her screen appearances of late, and it has certainly paid off. In 2018 alone, she co-starred in two highly-regarded films — “Disobedience” from Oscar winner Sebastián Lelio as the daughter of a late Orthodox rabbi who is romantically drawn to a female childhood friend, and Yorgos Lanthimos‘ “The Favourite,” in which she plays Lady Sarah Churchill, a noblewoman whose position in the court of Queen Anne is threatened by her upstart cousin. Her performance as Lady Sarah earned Weitz her first BAFTA Award.
In fact, in the course of her 30 year-long career in films, Weisz has amassed quite a collection of awards. She won an Academy Award for her performance in 2005’s “The Constant Gardener” and was Oscar-nominated again for “The Favourite.” She has garnered three Golden Globe noms, winning again for “Gardener,” and her “Favourite” win at the BAFTAs came on her second nomination.

The Man of Steel has found his arch-nemesis. Nicholas Hoult will play Lex Luthor in the upcoming James Gunn film “Superman: Legacy,” according to a report from Deadline.
IndieWire has reached out to representatives of Warner Bros. for comment.
According to Deadline, the casting process for Luthor began after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended on November 9, with casting on pause since the strike began in July. However, Hoult was in the mix for “Superman: Legacy” beforehand; the actor previously auditioned for the lead role of Clark Kent during early screen tests for the film. Hoult was one of three actors to make the final round of tests along with Tom Brittney and David Corenswet, who was ultimately cast as the lead this past June, along with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” lead Rachel Brosnahan as Superman’s love interest Lois Lane.

Toni Collette is an Oscar-nominated actress who has become a favorite of both the art house and mainstream crowd, ably hopping back-and-forth between small scale indie fare and big budget crowdpleasers. Let’s take a look back at 12 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1972 in Sydney, Australia, Collette came to the attentions of American audiences with a star-making turn in “Muriel’s Wedding” (1995), which brought her a Golden Globe nomination as Best Comedy/Musical Actress. She reaped her first Oscar bid in Best Supporting Actress just four years later for “The Sixth Sense” (1999), a supernatural horror flick that scared up massive box office receipts and critical acclaim.
In addition to her Oscar success, Collette earned Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006), for which she won the SAG Awards prize for top ensemble. She contended once more at BAFTA for “About a Boy” (2002) and again...

Audacy today announced an expansion of its relationship with Puck and the launch of About a Boy: The Story of Vladimir Putin — a five-part documentary podcast series exploring the forces that shaped Russian President Vladimir Putin’s childhood (and life) and why it's critical to understanding what he might do next in the war against Ukraine.
The series is written and narrated by Julia Ioffe, Founding Partner and Washington Correspondent, Puck, and one of the leading journalists covering Russia and Putin.
As Puck celebrates its second anniversary, “About a Boy” marks its first-ever audio documentary and second series in partnership with Audacy following the March 2022 launch of The Powers That Be: Daily—a daily show bringing listeners inside the four corners of power in America: Wall Street, Washington, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood.

A director uniquely skilled at capturing scale and creating lived-in worlds, Gareth Edwards has infused new visual energy into such iconic franchises as Godzilla and Star Wars. With The Creator, he tops himself in terms of world-building and generating a sense of awe.
The sci-fi epic begins in 2065, shortly after a prologue explains that artificial intelligence has advanced to the point that it’s been integrated into nearly every facet of human existence. This has largely been a boon to humanity, as they take over the jobs no one wants to do, with a competence that exceeds human intellect. It proves to have its problems, however, when the AI denotes a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles, prompting a war between the United States, which is seeking to wipe out all AI, and the country of New Asia, which protects and harbors them.

Spoiler Alert: The following review contains mild spoilers.
The creator of “The Creator,” Gareth Edwards, started his filmmaking career teaching himself VFX at home. He’s an innovator on that front, devising ways to generate creepy CG monsters for “Monsters” more than a dozen years ago, then overseeing deceptively massive blockbusters, like “Godzilla,” ever since (deceptive because much of that stunning scale comes from virtual detail added in post). Edwards’ problem all along has been with the human side of his stories — “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” being the lone exception — as the characters often feel like an afterthought and the acting ruptures the reality he’s trying to establish.
“The Creator” introduces an elaborate sci-fi future in which the U.S. Army wages a second war in Vietnam, this time against the perceived threat of artificial intelligence — a timely premise, given the panic over AI getting so much press attention these days.

Move over, "Jury Duty," there's another twist-filled jury story in town. This time it's "Juror No. 2," the upcoming movie from veteran filmmaker Clint Eastwood. Eastwood is in his 90s now, but age hasn't stopped the prolific actor-turned-filmmaker from working on new stories to bring to the silver screen. Though the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike means "Juror No. 2" has currently suspended filming, the Eastwood picture is still in the works -- and it sounds like it has the potential to be one of the most riveting movies he's made in a while.
When it comes to Eastwood the director, your mileage may vary. The nonagenarian star has certainly made some fantastic projects in his impressive lifetime, from Oscar winners "Unforgiven" and "Million Dollar Baby" to "Mystic River" and "The Bridges of Madison County." His most recent projects, though, including 2021's "Cry Macho" and "Richard Jewell," weren't wholeheartedly embraced by critics and audiences.

Where are the Skins cast now? Short answer: absolutely everywhere.
While the show did earn critical acclaim as well as a cult following over the course of its seven series, when this scrappy teen comedy drama launched on E4 in 2007 few could have predicted just how many household names it would spawn.
Among Skins’ impressive alumni are actors who went on to win Oscars and Baftas, play lead roles in hit movies like Slumdog Millionaire and Get Out, not to mention star in hit shows like Game of Thrones and Peaky Blinders.
Let’s take a look at some of the Skins cast’s best roles:
Joe Dempsie – Game of Thrones
Playing party animal Chris in Skins was in a way good preparation for Joe Dempsie’s later role as Gendry in Game of Thrones, as both characters have some pretty serious daddy issues: Chris’ dad (played by Green Wing...

Oxford grad Hugh Grant has outgrown most of his romantic comedy ticks from his early years – flopsy-mopsy hair, fluttery eyelashes and charming stutter – and has matured into an exceptional and versatile actor. Not that he has lost his sense of humor. Anyone who chuckled over his villainous turn in this year’s “Paddington 2” as a pompous, cravat-wrapped actor who frames his cuddly ursine co-star for a crime he didn’t commit can testify to that Then there was his finely tuned scoundrel turn in the BBC miniseries, “A Very English Scandal,“ in which his Parliament member Jeremy Thorpe plots the botched murder of his male lover.
Grant began his acting career in the ‘80s as secondary player in both British period pieces — some good (“Maurice”) and others faintly ridiculous (“The Lair of the White Moon”) – and Hollywood comedies (the gangster farce “Mickey Blue Eyes”). But any hopes that he...

Sony had been planning to give director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen a theatrical release on August 25th of this year, which is why we have it listed on our Summer Horror Movie Preview… but we’re going to have to remove it from that list, because Sony has (according to Yahoo) decided to delay the release an entire year. They Listen is now set to reach theatres on August 30, 2024.
They Listen is coming to us from Sony, Blumhouse, and Depth of Field. Weitz is producing the film with Jason Blum and Andrew Miano. Bea Sequeira, Dan Balgoyen, Britta Rowings, and Paul Davis serve as executive producers. Filming was already underway in Los Angeles back in December, so this movie is going to be complete and sitting on a shelf a while before its new release date rolls around next year.
All details about They Listen are being kept under wraps.

HanWay Films has boarded The One, an erotic thriller starring Melissa Barrera and Nicholas Hoult and will launch sales at the Cannes Film Festival.
The project comes from writer-director team Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and is billed as “a nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”
Barrera, who’s coming off box office horror hit Scream VI, leads the cast opposite the Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award-nominated Hoult. Barrera plays Taylor, whose last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show begins to feel terrifyingly real as she becomes a finalist. Amidst an opulent beachfront setting, fairy-tale dates and champagne, “pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.”
HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales, with WME Independent and UTA co-repping the film for North America.

I may be ready to give up on Nic Cage after this movie if I’m honest. Actually, that may be a tad harsh because I do feel like he is doing his best with the half-baked mindless script he was given. Cage as Dracula alone was the selling point of Renfield and as I would come to find out, Cage is not even in the damn film all that much!
I realise that I’m not exactly burying the lead here in terms of how I felt about Renfield but don’t worry because it’s not all bad. Let’s jump into it….
Renfield is not exactly reinventing the wheel here in as much as the story revolves around...

Since breaking onto the scene with About a Boy, Nicholas Hoult has had standout roles in X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Favourite, The Menu, and more, but every actor has that big role that got away… sometimes more than one. While speaking with The Guardian, Nicholas Hoult revealed some of the major movies he tried out for, including The Batman, Top Gun: Maverick, and Mission: Impossible 7.
“I screen-tested for Batman and didn’t get it. Screen-tested for Top Gun, didn’t get it,” Nicholas Hoult said. “Then I got the call from Tom Cruise: ‘Hey, how about Mission Impossible?’ Ok. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of The Great.” The role Nicholas Hoult was set to play in Mission: Impossible 7 was said to be one of the main villains, so having to drop out must have been painful.

The star of not one but two hot vampire films talks lockdown, eating caramel cockroaches and why he wants to make a romcom
In Renfield, a comedy slasher about Dracula’s lickspittle victim, Nicholas Hoult eats insects for his super-strength, which is prodigious. He decapitates and disarms with ease, his eyes flash amber as his power grows, but otherwise he plays it with a self-effacing British charm so pure that it’s like watching Hugh Grant rebooted.
In a hotel in central London to talk about the film, he looks – well, first of all, weirdly young. His breakthrough role, in 2002, was Grant’s titular co-star in About a Boy, though he appeared in his first film, Intimate Relations, six years before that, when he was five.
So, he has now been in the business for nearly three decades, but, at 33, he has not just the face, but also the self-effacing manners,...

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” exceeding all expectations over Easter weekend, it’s likely to be the #1 movie this weekend and maybe one or two more after that. Undaunted, four studios studios are releasing movies that will try to bring in business despite the overwhelming success and popularity of Universal’s animated movie.
In fact, Universal will be making a play for the top two spots this weekend with its latest horror-comedy “Renfield,” which comes from “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman‘s Skybound Entertainment with Chris McKay (“The Lego Batman Movie”) at the helm. It stars Nicholas Hoult (“The Favourite”) as the title character, henchman to the legendary vampire Count Dracula, as played by Nicolas Cage. Akwafina, Ben Schwartz and Oscar nominee Shohreh Aghdashloo all have key roles, as well.

The invigorating success of both Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin’s television and film careers over the last few years cannot be overstated. About a decade ago both legends found themselves in a position to move back to the top of the call sheet. This mutual resurgence hit an inflection point with the Netflix show Grace & Frankie, an incredibly successful sitcom that finished with its seventh season only last year.
The duo pair up again in the Paul Weitz tragi-comedy Moving On. The picture opens at the wake of an old friend of both Claire (Fonda) and Evelyn (Tomlin). Minutes after her arrival, a quiet Claire informs her dead friend’s widow Howard (Malcolm McDowell) that she plans to kill him. We gather he committed some unnamed atrocity on her many years before. In due time the movie will reveal how terrible it was and what she plans to do about it.

Havana Rose Liu recently had her breakthrough role playing the lead in the Hulu thriller No Exit (read our review Here) – which was an okay movie, but underwhelming in comparison to the awesome Taylor Adams novel it was based on. Now Deadline reports that Liu is returning to the thriller realm with a role in in director Chris Weitz’s horror film They Listen. Liu joins a cast that includes the previously announced Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), John Cho (Searching), Lukita Maxwell (Shrinking), and Riki Lindhome (Wednesday). Details on her characters, and in fact on every character in the movie, are being kept under wraps.
