Love might be in the air, but there was a lot of love missing in the Foster world.
If you thought for a second that there would be anything that resembles a moment of peace or rest, well, after watching The Fosters Season 4 Episode 13 you realize just how wrong you were.
What an emotionally devastating episode. Are you exhausted? I'm exhausted.
Is there anything more devastating than watching Callie get railroaded in the system?
I get it. Life isn't fair, and neither is the justice system. It's a flawed system, and The Fosters has never shied away from shedding light on that multiple times and in various ways.
The majority of the time it relates to Callie. As even the judge mentioned, she's a magnet for trouble. Not only does she attract trouble, she frequently starts it herself.
But as frustrating as Callie is, we've witnessed her growth, and we...

Warning: If you have not watched this week's episode of The Walking Dead, Do Not Read Any Further! For everyone else, get your irons ready and let's do this…
The last time we saw Carl on The Walking Dead, he was headed off on one of the Saviors' trucks with Jesus on a mission to exact his revenge on Negan, and in the latest episode, he meets the man face to face.
Sunday's episode, titled "Sing Me a Song," finally gave us a look at the Sanctuary through Carl's eyes -- ahem, eye -- and while Carl's vision isn't exactly 20/20, here are six important things we learned:
1. Carl's a bit of a badass… and even Negan thinks so
Carl made one heck of an entrance once finally inside the Sanctuary's gates, killing two of Negan's men from the back of his truck -- and though he was quickly outnumbered by the Saviors, he made quite...

Warning: If you have not watched this week's episode of The Walking Dead, Do Not Read Any Further! For everyone else, get your tractors ready and let's go…
If there's one thing we know about Maggie, it's that she's a survivor -- and that doesn't change on this week's episode of The Walking Dead.
Sunday's episode, titled "Go Getters," picks up at the Hilltop, where Maggie and Sasha bury Glenn and Abraham -- and attempt to move on from their traumatic deaths.
But what about Maggie and Glenn's baby? Find out what happens to Maggie's unborn child (plus four other revelations) below:
1. Maggie's Baby Will Be Ok… If She Learns to Take Doctor's Orders
We can all breathe a sigh of relief; Maggie won't be losing another family member anytime soon -- as long as she listens to Dr. Carson's orders. But Maggie, who is basically ordered to bed rest, doesn't find that...

To quote Negan: "Dun dun dun duuuuuun."
Surprise! America's most charming psychopath returned again on this week's all-new episode of The Walking Dead and Negan, together with his loyal band of Saviors, managed to make everyone's life in Alexandria a living hell.
We're still fuming with rage over all of the twistedly sadistic punishments Negan unleashed upon Rick and his followers, so we're ranking The Walking Dead villain's eight most awful acts on a scale from douchey to diabolical.
8. Negan Stole Their Mattresses: When Negan arrived, a week early we might add, Rick and Co. thought that he and Lucille would just pick up the supplies that the town set aside and be on their merry and maniacal way. But, unfortunately, that's far from what happened. "No, Rick, no.," Negan snarled. "You don’t decide what we take. I do." The Saviors ransacked each and every white-picket-fenced house in Alexandria, taking everything...

Maybe you’re a podcast obsessive, filling every spare moment of your commute to catch up on your favorites. Or a single-subject listener, only keeping up with a subject or issue that means most to you. The beauty of podcasts is that they can cater to completists and dabblers alike.
Regardless of your preferred way to enjoy these stories and conversations, it can be daunting to track the latest from every show. To highlight some of the year’s best, here are 10 quality episodes we suggest adding to your listening queue.
Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People – 1. Ron Paul’s Baby
Airdate: March 15th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: In all its various broadcast homes, “The Chris Gethard Show” has been one of the most thrilling weekly experiments on TV. So it makes sense that a Gethard-hosted podcast would have the same comedic blend of empathy and honesty. The show is built on conversations between Gethard and anonymous callers, governed only by two rules: the phone line closes after an hour, but Gethard can’t hang up before then. The host has a keen sense for the unspoken questions, the topics that each caller wants to discuss but can’t quite figure out how to broach. Not afraid to let callers turn the questions onto him, these talks have a way of culminating in a common understanding between strangers, which can be as therapeutic for a listener as it is for the two parties involved. And there’s no better place to start than the premiere, which ends with a moment so cathartic, it’ll make you an instant fan of both the individuals involved.
Listen to These Episodes Next: “2. Passport, Exodus,” “4. The Most Amazing Destruction”
Embedded – The House
Airdate: March 30th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: As an NPR production, Kelly McEvers and the staff of “Embedded” demonstrate one of the essential values of great journalism: the power to use specific stories to generate empathy for groups of people often discussed in the abstract. “Embedded” is a ground-up approach to documenting various cross-sections of communities, highlighting the individuals to present an alternative to the group characterization that often befalls them. The premiere episode finds McEvers profiling the residents of a shared home in Austin, Indiana, where opioids have become an inescapable addiction for its residence. The details are stark, unsettling and unadorned. Perhaps the best proof of the value of a show like “Embedded” is that the people at the center of these stories don’t end after a half hour: an Austin resident was the subject of their first follow-up story.

Extra Hot Great – 114: Blindly Watching Game of Thrones
Airdate: April 26th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Extra Hot Great has been offering its special brand of TV observations over multiple podcast feed and co-host roster iterations. Now well past 100 episodes into its resurrection, the television discussion show has refined its dependable format, complete with a weekly consideration of a TV episode for induction in their Canon (spoiler alert: they don’t always make it, as is the case with the “30 Rock” episode discussed here). But what sets #114 apart is the episode’s installment of the weekly Game Time feature. The gang plays an round of a listener-submitted game called TV Typos (basically, the round-robin game show version of #ChangeALetterRuinATVShow). What follows is 25 minutes of brilliant, dumb wordplay with enough built-in momentum to have each co-host sobbing by the end. It’s a testament to the co-host’s deep bench of TV minutiae that they’re able to anticipate some of these before they come. The seconds between when you can tell they have the answers and the moment they give them are some of the simplest joys you’ll find anywhere.

I Was There Too – Raiders of the Lost Ark with Martin Casella
Airdate: February 16th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Matt Gourley’s interview show takes a biweekly look at the actors on the periphery of some of most beloved films of the past few decades. While the actor interviews give some choice fly-on-the-wall observations from set, the show’s most compelling episode this year is the talk with Martin Casella, who served as Steven Spielberg’s assistant during the production of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” From impromptu costume decisions to the director’s TV viewing and nutritional regimens, this firsthand account adds a new angle to an established classic. (And for anyone who’s ever obsessed over an Indiana Jones costume, Jeremy Carter’s post-interview discussion of the search for the perfect Indy leather jacket might do the same.)
Listen to These Episodes Next: “Field of Dreams with Dwier Brown,” “Aladdin with Gilbert Gottfried”
Keepin’ It 1600 – Ep. 7: Cruz-Kasich Alliance and Special Guest Jon Lovett
Airdate: May 6th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Amidst an election season that’s alternated between chaotic and soul-crushing in equal measure, it’s been fascinating to filter each week’s craziness through the perspective of two individuals who’ve been buried deep within the past two major presidential cycles. Former speechwriter Jon Favreau and Strategy and Communications Advisor Dan Pfeiffer (both of whom worked on President Obama’s national campaigns and in the White House) are each invested insiders and passionate outside observers of 2016’s descent into madness. A weekly look at the current state of political media, it’s also a dependable repository for great White House anecdotes. Alongside fellow former speechwriter Jon Lovett, the show’s seventh episode featured the trio recounting the choicest lines from the President’s various Correspondents Dinner appearances (particularly those delivered in the immediate wake of ordering the Bin Laden compound strike).
Listen to These Episodes Next: “Ep. 1: Drumpf and the Media and Rubio’s Missteps,” “Ep. 5: Bill Clinton’s Finger-Wagging and Special Guest Kal Penn,” “Ep. 9: ‘Meet the Press’ Host Chuck Todd, Drumpf’s ‘Pivot,’ Polling Mayhem, and More”
Modern Love – 3: Not So Simple Math
Airdate: January 28th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Sarah Paulson’s central role as Marcia Clark was one of the main reasons the “American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson” grabbed the public’s attention in the year’s early months. But Paulson also gave another 2016-best performance in a venue where no one could see her face. Wbur’s Modern Love enlists notable performers like Paulson to perform entries from the regular New York Times column that highlights love in all its forms. Paulson reads Amy Seek’s story of navigating an open adoption with a gentleness that conveys the underlying heartbreak without being manipulative. While other episodes usually succeed on the strength of the performance, this one features a conversation with Seek herself, whose recollection of the events she details in her piece and the six years since is a powerful addendum to a story beautifully told.
Listen to These Episodes Next: “7: In Darkness and In Light,” “9: Seesawing Libidos”
More Perfect – Cruel and Unusual
Airdate: June 1st
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Some of the best new podcasts of the year have focused on institutions, whether they’re more abstract (American Public Media’s The Uncertain Hour focuses on policies and practice within America’s welfare system) or more defined, as with More Perfect’s close examination of the Supreme Court. In its pilot episode, this Radiolab presentation trains its microphones on the pivotal individuals at the center of multiple states’ capital punishment programs. Layered with the trademark attention to atmospheric sound design that makes its parent podcast such a reliable listen, More Perfect should provide a healthy perspective amidst a judicial branch currently in flux.
Listen to These Episodes Next: Once you’ve listened to this and Episode 2, “The Political Thicket,” go back and listen to the Podcast Hall-of-Fame-worthy Radiolab episode “Stochasticity.”
Reply All – #64-67: On the Inside
Airdate: May 11th-June 9th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: This Gimlet show has been the best podcast in existence for the better part of a year now, so to pick just one standout episode is particularly difficult. But the edge goes to the four-episode arc centered on Paul Modrowski, whose blog written from inside prison (where he’s currently serving a life sentence) first attracted the attention of producer Sruthi Pinnamaneni last year. What begins as an investigation of the logistics behind the posting of Modrowski’s expansive online diary eventually uncovers questions surrounding his incarceration. Like the best true crime stories, it balances the details of the central murder cases with a careful consideration of the individuals who allegedly inhabited its timeline. Most popular true crime podcasts keep the perspective of a single narrator, but Pinnamaneni sprinkles in just enough input from regular hosts Alex Goldman and Pj Vogt to add a conversational, illustrative layer to Modrowski’s story. Pinnamaneni’s reporting is extensive and forthright, the kind that will make you want to do your own outside research as soon as the last chapter ends.
Listen to These Episodes Next: “#3 We Know What You Did,” “#44 Shine on You Crazy Goldman,” “#56 Zardulu”
Skillset – #3: This is Bringing Up Weird Feelings for Me
Airdate: May 12th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Amy Nicholson’s first-person podcast for MTV News is an intriguing blend of below-the-line education and critical insight. Between her forgotten film history written intros and the specificity of her interview subjects, Nicholson helps Skillset feel more like a series of audio profiles than regular taped conversations. These episodes highlight movies not just as a vital art form, but a gateway to the rest of what the world has to offer. (How many other film podcasts would have jazz trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire as their inaugural guest?) This particular episode features a window into the practical, unenhanced feline training that let the cats of “Keanu” steal the spotlight against some comedic heavyweights. And if you’re wondering what a real punk band thought of Jeremy Saulnier’s latest genre triumph “Green Room,” Nicholson enlists The Muffs for some authentic opinions. It’s this kind of extra-layer digging that has this fresh batch of MTV shows (“The Stakes” takes a similarly fascinating route to addressing the unspoken side of politics) already off and running at full speed.
Listen to These Episodes Next: All six episodes so far all have quality hooks, but the Sharlto Copley episode from the pilot is particularly worth a listen.
Start Up – Season 3, Episode 4: Dear Music Fans…
Airdate: May 12th
Why It’s Worth the Listen: Season 1 of Start Up was a rare glimpse inside the creation of its podcasting parent company Gimlet Media, right as the medium was becoming mainstream. Season 2 stayed nested inside a company’s origin story, this time as an outside observer of a dating site’s early months. For their most recent set of episodes, Start Up managed to compress the roller coaster of entrepreneurship in a more compact form. Profiling the unexpected rise and publicly unceremonious end of Grooveshark, Eric Mennel reports on the music streaming site’s early troubles, serendipitous success and eventual replacement in the entrepreneurial space. It’s a familiar arc for the biographies of these kinds of businesses, but through the Start Up lens, these triumphs and tragedies reach further toward each pole than you might expect.
Listen to These Episodes Next: Season 1 launched the entire company, but Season 2’s 10-episode arc on Dating Ring is still great.
Honorable Listens also highly worthy of your time: the aforementioned The Uncertain Hour and The Stakes; 99% Invisible’s ode to trash truck tunes; Mortified’s tale of pining after the vice principal; Lauren Lapkus helps to tackle kids’ impossible questions on The Longest Shortest Time; Candidate Confessional talks to the recipient of one of local politics’ most infamous viral booing sessions; Five Thirty Eight Politics’ audio doc on the Rev. Jeremiah Wright week of the ’08 presidential campaign; the episode of the Washington Post’s Presidential that proves James Monroe was everywhere in early American history; Making the Sausage’s in-depth conversation about music licensing; The First Annual Blank Check Awards (one of the best 2015 year-end wrap-ups you’ll hear); the ongoing You Must Remember This series chronicling the Hollywood Blacklist is a given for a list like this; The Dollop’s overview of the truly unbelievable Fed Ex Flight 705; Buzzfeed’s Internet Explorer compendium of workplace email/chat catastrophes; You’re the Expert’s hilarious panel show with a leading psychologist who studies nightmares; the Planet Money profile of an infuriating-yet-textbook Internet scamming scheme; The Memory Palace’s cryptic look at an American pariah-turned-wrestler; a careful consideration of the future of animation/CGI via Fighting in the War Room; The Gist and Chris Molanphy remember Prince.

Donald Trump vs. Starbucks' War on Christmas. The War on Christmas: The movies that come to mind We're still in November, but the War on Christmas – according to online buzz, a second cousin once removed of the War on Cops – has begun. Weeping and gritting of teeth has seized certain population segments in the U.S.A. (and perhaps other countries as well) after Fox News, that beacon of intellectual freedom at the end of the cable news tunnel, announced that … Starbucks' holiday season cups are a) red b) devoid of Christmas decorations. Could it be a satanic conspiracy disguised as politically correct inclusiveness? The result of a communist takeover at the Seattle-headquartered company? Cruel and unusual Christian persecution in the form of paper cups? Your guess is as good as mine. Far-right Republican icon, U.S. presidential candidate, and 2015 political circus ringmaster Donald Trump seems to think that Starbucks...

With last week's news about a federal judge in California declaring the state's death penalty "cruel and unusual punishment" and therefore unconstitutional along with this week's horror story about a bungled execution in Arizona, Brian Trenchard-Smith's recent trio of capital punishment-themed films proved particularly prescient.

300: Rise Of An Empire told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” is a new chapter of the epic saga, which takes the action to a new battlefield—the sea.
The story pits the Greek general Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces, ruled by the mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and led by Artemisia, the vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
Knowing his only hope of defeating the overwhelming Persian armada will be to unite all of Greece, Themistokles ultimately leads the charge that will change the course of the war.
The action adventure stars Sullivan Stapleton (“Gangster Squad”) as Themistokles and Eva Green (“Dark Shadows,” “Casino Royale”) as Artemisia. Reprising their roles from “300,” Lena Headey stars as the Spartan Queen, Gorgo; David Wenham appears as Dilios; Andrew Tiernan plays Ephialtes; Andrew Pleavin plays Daxos; and Rodrigo Santoro returns in the role of the Persian God-King, Xerxes. Here’s the second trailer (first here) for the sequel to the 2006 epic, 300. The sequel has the title 300: Rise of an Empire and carries on where we left off 7 years ago. The original movie has to be one of my favourites of the last decade and I can’t believe it’s taken such a long time for a second installment to come along. 300: Rise of an Empire stars Sullivan Stapleton as Themistokles, Eva Green as Artemisia. Lena Headey as the Spartan Queen, Gorgo; Hans Matheson as Aeskylos David Wenham as Dilios, and Rodrigo Santoro as the Persian King Xerxes. 300: Rise of an Empire and should be with us March 2014. The film is directed by Noam Murro with the screenplay by Zack Snyder & Kurt Johnstad.

You have a hunch you’re in for a pretty damn good Grey’s Anatomy when the episode starts with Meredith accidentally quoting the theme song from The Muppet Show. And “Puttin’ on the Ritz” — in which half of Grey Sloan (and we) attend Jackson’s fancypants, circus-themed fundraiser — doesn’t disappoint. It delivers yuks (MerDer using their “pent-up surgical energy” to compete for donations), tears (Calzona heartache), shocks (more on those later) and even the unthinkable (a likable April!). Here’s how it all shakes out…

The movie looks like it's going to be great. I really liked what I saw in the first trailer. I'm looking forward to seeing more at Comic-Con next week!
The movie is being directed by Noam Murro from a screenplay written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. It's based on the graphic novel Xerxes, by Frank Miller.
The movie is set to be released on August 2nd, 2013, and here's the synopsis:
Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster “300,” this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield—on the sea—as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece...

More death and destruction await in this first, Spartan-fuelled preview for 300: Rise Of An Empire.
Based on Frank Miller’s latest graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster 300, this new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield – on the sea – as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war.
300: Rise Of An Empire pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures present, a Cruel and Unusual Films/Mark Canton/Gianni Nunnari Production, 300: Rise Of An Empire.
The action adventure stars Sullivan Stapleton (“Gangster Squad”) as Themistokles and Eva Green (“Dark Shadows,” “Casino Royale”) as Artemisia. Lena Headey reprises her starring role from 300 as the Spartan Queen,...

This is the latest poster for 300: Rise of an Empire, and it features a wave of blood. If you've seen the first movie, then you know there's going to be a lot of blood spilt in battle.
The movie is being directed by Noam Murro from a screenplay written by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad. It's based on the graphic novel Xerxes, by Frank Miller. The first film was so badass. It's my motivational workout movie. I hope this sequel ends up being just as awesome.
It's is set to be released on August 2nd, 2013 and here's the synopsis:

Warner Bros. has moved a couple of movies around in their release schedule. They moved 300: Rise of an Empire from this August to March 7th, 2014. Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution explained the move saying,
Moving 300: Rise of an Empire to March 7 continues in the tradition of the first 300, and kicks off the Spring movie-going season in epic style. The film is on track to become all that audiences have come to expect from the franchise.
One of the things not mentioned in the news was that the film was one of the movies affected by the recent financial problems of the visual effects house Rhythm & Hues. I'm sure that had something to do with it as well. There will need to be more time to get the effects heavy film ready for release.
The studio also ended up shifting the release of Tom Cruise's sci-fi action...

Warner Bros. Pictures has announced a change of release dates for two of its most-anticipated event films: “All You Need is Kill,” from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, and “300: Rise of an Empire,” from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
“All You Need is Kill” has been moved to the Summer release corridor, opening on June 6, 2014, with select international markets predating the domestic release, starting the weekend of May 30, 2014. The earlier international release date was specifically chosen to put the opening two weeks ahead of the start of the World Cup. The move reflects the studio’s already strong belief in the huge science fiction actioner, which marks the first collaboration between two proven hit-makers, Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman.

The official website for 300: Rise of the Empire has been updated with some new photos an updated synopsis and character descriptions of descriptions of the hero of the story Themistocles, played by Sullivan Stapleton and the villain, Artemisia, played by Eva Green. It also looks like a character from Zack Snyder's first movie will be back.

With Warner Bros. debuting the immense new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel last night, we’ve now got the first poster to share for another of Snyder’s upcoming projects, 300: Rise of an Empire.
The film, directed by Noam Murro, sees Snyder returning as producer for the ‘sidequel’ to his original blockbuster, 300. After recently catching the first images, this first 300: Rise of an Empire poster cements its status as an action blockbuster to look forward to this summer. And with it comes the first official synopsis, along with the hi-res versions of those first images.

No time for my Year End Roundup or even my Havana Film Festival Report because I am busy with writing a Report -For-Pay of the 1,000 Top Filmmakers, Location Managers and Influencers Worldwide for a particularly smart country’s film commissioner and I must deliver it by the year’s end.
As I compile it, I am struck by the names of the film companies I am looking at. German names are mundane and Irish are imaginative. I know the U.S. names so well that in contrast, the French names are so evocative.
Naming companies after their owners and the well known studio names are normal and mundane. Personal meaning names like Lava Bear or Wild West Picture Show are more interesting as they bring up imaginary pictures. Weed Road of Akiva Goldsman is very evocative – do its owners smoke weed? Virgin Produced – well that’s fairly obvious I think -- once you know Richard Branson owns it, Walden Media evokes Walden Pond. Village Roadshow always sounded good but it’s old school like the majors are by now, as is New Regency of former arms dealer Arnon Milchan now partner of 20th Century Fox and others with their longstanding studio deals. In the U.S. we have so many old studio or “studio deal” companies whose early origins have been obscured by the sands of time and which no longer elicit dreams of greatness or memories of private childhood games or haunts, names like Alcon, the company founded by FedEx's Fred Smith, Leonardo di Caprio's Appian Way (recalling the old Roman road), Mark Canton's Atmosphere Entertainment, Amram Bernstein's Beacon Pictures, Rob Reiner's Castle Rock Entertainment, Spring Creek which was so evocative of Paula Weinstein when she was with Mark Rosenberg, major Columbia Pictures, Weinstein offshoot Dimension Films, Spielberg's Dreamworks, Endgame Entertainment, James Schamus and David Linde's Focus Features now Universal's arthouse arm, major Fox 2000 and Fox Searchlight, Gold Circle Films of My Big Fat Greek Wedding fame, HBO – a perfect name of the time and place, HBO Latin America Group – a perfect revisionist name for the brand, Imagine Entertainment which still elicits the name of Brian Glazer ,Malpaso which still evokes Clint Eastwood, Mandalay Pictures which still recalls Peter Guber and those old Sony days of power plays, Legendary Pictures recalls Batman and Superman, Marvel Studios – the comicbook heroes, Lionsgate – gone corporate after their indie Canadian beginnings so long ago, , MGM, Moonstone, Morgan Creek Productions, Mutual Films, Myriad Pictures, New Line Cinema, New Regency, Pandemonium (we still love Bill Mechanic), Paramount Pictures, , Phoenix Pictures (we still love Mike Medavoy), Radar Pictures (Ted Fields), Red Om (Julie Roberts), Relativity Media (Ryan Cavanaugh), Revelations (hooray for Morgan Freeman), , Ritchie-Wigram, Screen Gems, Sidney Kimmel Entertainment to name a few, Tribeca Films, Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros.
We have the usual names based on the company owners who are or perceive themselves to be brands in themselves like Apatow, Berlanti Prods, Bleiberg Entertainment, Blumhouse Prods. In which Jason Blum becomes horror branded, Bender Spenk, Bruce Cohen Prods., Callahan Filmworks, Chris Morgan Prods., Chuck Lorre Prods., De Line, de Passe Jones Entertainment, Di Novi, Francine Maisler & Associates, Freemantle, George Litto , Gerber, Gk Films, Hurwitz & Schlossberg Prods., , J.W. Prods., Josephson, KatzSmith, Lin Pictures, Stuber Pictures, Tdj Enterprises, Team Downey, The Weinstein Company.
There are those companies whose names evoke places like 22nd & Indiana, Arroyo Films, Broken Road Prods., Cross Creek, GreeneStreet Films, Cherry Road Films (not so new), Hyde Park , Lakeshore Entertainment (where Tom Rosenberg either lived or vacationed as a child), Langley Park, Olive Bridge Entertainment, Pearl Street, Spring Street, Barry Levinson's Baltimore, Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street, Thunder Road, Summit named after the street Patrick Wachsberger live(d) on in Beverly Hills.
The U.S. fanciful names like 3 Monkeys, Angle Films, Agregate Films, Polymorphic evoke something more private than public. Other companies evoking private signals to those who are in the know are 3 Monkeys, Aggregate Films (pretty hip for today), Angle Films, Barnstorm Pictures, Bold Films, Branded Films (a good capitalistic name for today), Captivate Entertainment, Carousel Prods., Cruel and Unusual, Everyman Pictures, Exclusive Media Group, Film 44, FilmDistrict, Global Produce, Green Hat Films, Groundswell , Gulfstream, Heyday, Illumination Entertainment, ImageMovers, Lava Bear Films – hats off to David Linde, Media Rights Capital, Mockingbird Pictures, Ninjas Runnin Wild, One Race Films, Open City (we love Jason Kliot and Joana Vicente), Original Films, Our Stories, Playtone, Polymorphic, Roserock Films, Saturn, , Atlantic Streamline, Shandaland – I love the Yiddish reference here , Strike Entertainment, Thousand Words.
For some reason, the French names sound more exotic or, if not exotic, then somehow more evocative of the unknown…Of course some are named after their owners, like Les Films d’Antoine…though even that sounds more exotic than Gk Films, Graham King’s company. There is an everyday familiarity with the U.S. that I definitely do not have with the French.
I feel a little like Proust in Names and Places, conjuring up unknown histories and deeper meanings to the French companies.
Ok, A.S.A.P. is American so that hardly counts, though it is a cool name for a film company. And Anna Lena, maybe is a person’s name. Avenue B, again is American as is Blue Monday and Local Film, though Charivari is Italian and Aurora is Latin. But the Cine names are great: Cine Nomine – what an intelligent play on words, in the name of g’d, or Cinema Defacto or Cine-Sud; all have great meaning behind them. Dharamsala is either an Indian God or food, Dolce Vita we know is a tribute to Fellini. Is Delante Films like Adelante? And Elzevir – again Proust enters with his fictionalized artist. Estrella and Gloria are names aiming for Greatness. But what is Kaleo?
La Vie est Belle gets me singing the song from South Pacific. Lazennec seems very old and venerable, aristocratic even, while Les Enrages is very 60s. Rezo is also an old and classic film company of France and Pathe and Gaumont are equivalent to our major studio names. Les Films de la Croisade – does it have a crusade as its mission? Les Films du Lendemain seems very laid back. Les Films du Poisson makes me wonder what does a fish have to do with the movies? And what is Veyrier? Les Productions Balthazar sound s great, though its founder’s name is Balthazar. And Les Films Pelleas sound grand and mythological. Mille et Une Films makes you know there are 1,001 stories to be told. Haut et Court elicits a picture which I cannot explain.
While MK2 is simply based upon the name of Marin Karmitz, I love his job title, “President du Conseil de Surveillance”, or President of the Surveillance Council, as he grants his son Nathanael his legacy.
Noodles is fun. Petit is descriptive, Sbs is boring – I thought it was a broadcaster but it’s just a name, however, the name Said Ben Said is not boring at all nor are his films, like Passion and Carnage. Sciapode is intriguing – it sounds like sci-fi and Sombrero makes me think the filmmaker leans toward the Latino. Stone Angels – English again, as is The French Connection – both conjure up images from real life fiction. Stone Angels that decorate tombs of old aristocrats; Pierre-Ange Le Pogam’s name also conjures up the Proustian Names of Old - Stone Angel the Pogam…what is a Pogam? Tempete Sous un Crane is also totally out there as a name…Storm Beneath a Crane? Maybe I don’t know French so well after all. But that is Julie Delpy’s company She’s already mostly American anyway. . I loved her last film 2 Days in New York. It would take me another lifetime to be as knowledgeable about the French as I am about the Americans. And I’m not very knowledgeable about them either nowadays. But the French names make me feel like Proust as they elicit wonderment and create stories in and of themselves.

Sneak Peek some rough-cut TV commercials, selling new lines of toys, containing movie spoilers from director Zack Snyder's upcoming 'Superman' motion picture "Man Of Steel".
The new film opens June 14, 2013.
"Man Of Steel" is based on a story co-written by Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight Rises").
"What I can say is that it's a modernization of the character," said actor Henry Cavill about his role as 'Superman', "and a very realistic view of one, obviously, very fantastic individual.
"It's an unreal situation, but it's approached from a very practical viewpoint. We wanted to make the character easier to identify with.
"It’s important to do the role justice..."
"The big challenge," said director Snyder, "is if you can make people feel 'What would you do if you were Superman?' That’s what we went out to do as far as we could. Superman’s always been this kind...

Director Zack Snyder ("Watchmen") recently talked about the challenges of making his gritty, Christopher Nolan-produced, Vancouver-lensed 'Superman' feature "Man of Steel", that reboots the character for a new generation of superhero fans.
"The big challenge," said Snyder, "is if you can make people feel 'What would you do if you were Superman?'...That’s what we went out to do as far as we could. Superman’s always been this kind of big blue boy-scout up on a throne that nobody can really touch, so we tried to make him relatable...We decided to act as if no Superman film had been made – even though we love the films that have been made… Superman is a big responsibility but I felt he needed to be reintroduced to a generation and I thought this was a great opportunity."

I spent last week on a seven-day Vicodin trip thanks to some dental work gone wrong over a holiday, and last night, once I'd finally decided it was worth it to keep living life, I realized I didn't even watch Teen Wolf last week. It was a shame on a couple of levels, the biggest one being that the episode was so spectacularly, unapologetically gay, it probably would have just healed me like unicorns sometimes do in the wild. Also, of course, I didn't write a recap. I apologize for standing you up. Please accept this photo mini-cap as an apology.

Now, onto this week!
It's a dark, stormy night in Poorville, and a couple of paupers are arguing in their van down by the river. I guess the Beacon Hills Gazette has been keeping the recent string of serial killings under wraps, because when the lights go out due to generator trouble,...

Sucker Punch is a crazy movie, but it’s my kind of crazy. I think Zack Snyder just thought of the craziest things he wanted to see in a movie, so he did it. That’s what artists should do. Now it turns out to be some metaphorical fantasy and that’s cool too. It makes the film beautiful in addition to being awesome.
