Trailblazing “Master of None” Emmy winner Lena Waithe created the Showtime ensemble drama “The Chi,” which examines life on the South Side of Chicago — like “The Wire” for the Midwest. Gold Derby recently spoke with the show’s stars Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, and Yolonda Ross about their work in the freshman series. Scroll down and click on their names below to be taken to their full interviews.
“We really wanted to put faces to some of these tragedies,” reveals Mitchell. He plays Brandon Johnson, an aspiring chef whose younger brother is killed in retaliation for a murder he didn’t commit. “So many people are losing family members. We really wanted to show how not only does it strip a family of something, but it also strips a neighborhood of something.” Mitchell is a two-time SAG Award nominee as a member of the ensemble casts of “Straight Outta Compton...

Chicago native Yolonda Ross was excited to participate in “The Chi” because it presented her city “in a positive way.” Though crime happens everywhere, “Chicago really has gotten a bad rap,” so Ross was compelled by the way that creator Lena Waithe made “characters and situations personal, so that people could get how some of these things can actually happen.” This Showtime ensemble drama, also starring Jason Mitchell, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine and Sonja Sohn, examines life on the South Side of Chicago and ended its 10-episode first season in March. It will be back for a second season. Watch our exclusive video interview with Ross above.

It's the final episode as Manuel has worked his way through all the Lgbt-themed HBO productions.
I began this project because, after watching and recapping Looking here, I became fascinated with the idea that, with that Andrew Haigh show, the cable network had somehow reached peak gay TV even as it also managed to alienate the very viewers it was trying to coax. I wanted to, in a way, put Looking in context by watching everything HBO had produced and aired that had tackled Lgbt issues.
This required a lot of scavenging—despite their shiny HBOGo and HBO Now ventures, a lot of the network’s older and more obscure TV movies and shows remain unattainable. And so I reached back and watched a lot of not so great TV movies from the early 80s, caught up with key “very special episodes” of their most well-known dramas and comedies, and...

Last week we talked about polygamy and homosexuality in Big Love, all the while singing Chloe Sevigny’s praises. This week, we focus on the “genius” Todd Haynes, who's obviously on our minds what with our infatuation with Carol. HBO, as we’ve seen, has always celebrated and supported out gay filmmakers, from Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Common Threads, The Celluloid Closet) and Cheryl Dunye (Stranger Inside) to Gus Van Sant (Elephant) and Alan Ball (Six Feet Under). It makes sense that Haynes’s adaptation of Mildred Pierce, led by the incomparable Kate Winslet found a home at the cable network.
We could spend all day gabbing about this languid adaptation but I’ll keep it short and sweet today with 5 Reasons Todd Haynes’s Mildred Pierce is deliciously gay...

Digital & DVD Release Date: Sept. 3, 2013
Price: DVD $22.99
Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
2013 thriller film The Stranger Within is not to be confused with all the other movies with the same name that were released before it. It might have been better if Sony had kept the original name of The Stranger Inside.
Whatever you call it, the R-rated film stars William Baldwin (Backdraft) and Estella Warren (See You in September) as a couple relaxing in a vacation home on a remote Mediterranean island after a traumatic ordeal. Their first night in the house, they’re interrupted by a girl (Sarah Butler, I Spit On Your Grave) who has blood on her hands. The couple quickly discover she also likes playing mind games.
The Stranger Within is the first feature film written and directed by Adam Neutzsky-Wulff (TV’s 2900 Happiness) and stars Katia Winter (TV’s Dexter) and Jeffrey Pierce (TV...

We caught up today with actress Sarah Butler (star of last year’s Steven R. Monroe-directed feature I Spit on Your Grave) to chat with her regarding the psychological thriller The Stranger Inside, which is currently filming on the isle of Mallorca, Spain, under the eye of writer and director Adam Neutzsky-Wulff. Read on for word from the shoot along with a bit of ocular candy.
“I'm having such a great time,” stated Butler, who appears in the role of ‘Sarah’ opposite co-stars Estella Warren (2001’s Planet of the Apes) and William Baldwin (Backdraft). “My character has been particularly challenging because she appears to be one thing one moment and the next another. She is complex and dynamic, and it's been the time of my life!”

My post just below this one (on the lady – Cynthia Stafford – who won the lottery and started a film production company) led me to this film – My Place In The Horror, a horror/thriller that, if you read the post, would know that Stafford executive-produced, and likely financed, to the tune of $500,000, as IMDb Pro states.
The film was produced by Effie Brown (also a black woman) and her Duly Noted production company – an 8 or so year old venture. For those unfamiliar with either name, some titles Brown has produced in recent years include, Stranger Inside (directed by Cheryl Dunye, 2001); Real Women Have Curves (directed by Patricia Cardosa, 2002); and Everyday People (2004, Jim McKay). Brown later served as executive producer on In the Cut (2003, directed by Jane Campion). And there are others… she’s been around, and certainly has a resume to prove it.
