- Yashvardhan "Yash" Raichand (Amitabh Bachchan) is a filthy rich and opulent real estate tycoon, living with his loving wife Nandini (Jaya Bachchan) and their two sons, Rahul and Rohan. Rahul is adopted whilst Rohan is their biological son. Rahul feels indebted to his parents when he finds out at the age of eight that he is adopted. Yash expects both of his sons to abide by the traditions of their family - this includes studying abroad and having arranged marriages. When Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) returns home after studying abroad for several years, Yash praises him for graduating with an academic bachelor's degree and hands over his empire to his adopted son as a reward. Rahul promises his father that, no matter what happens, he will always abide by the family's traditions. One afternoon, Rahul encounters Anjali (Kajol), a cheerful, vivacious and bubbly gal at a slum. Rahul becomes enamored with Anjali, mesmerized by her at first sight. Anjali initially finds him annoying but after they spend some more quality time hanging out together, Anjali gradually reciprocates his love. She nervously hesitates upon learning that Rahul is born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Anjali feels that their relationship won't go the distance, coming from a struggling, low income working class background.
Yash wants his close friend's daughter Naina (Rani Mukherji), whom he sees as a very suitable girl, married to Rahul. Naina was also close friends with Rahul in school. Naina professes her love for Rahul, but he politely turns her down, explaining that his heart is enamored with another woman. Naina lets Rahul go, encouraging Rahul to follow his heart. When Rahul informs his father about Anjali and that he intends to marry her instead of Naina, Yash is furiously grumpy upon hearing this. Yash berates Rahul for being non-traditionally foolish by letting his infatuation for a dirt girl who is a complete stranger cloud his judgment. Yash also expresses disappointment that his son has such middle class dreams. Rahul placates his father by assuring Yash that he will cut ties with Anjali. He sets off to the slum to break the news to Anjali that they cannot be together. Upon arriving on the scene, Rahul is shocked and saddened to discover that Anjali's father (Alok Nath) has suddenly died of natural causes. unable to bear the shock to see Anjali hysterically weeping and fearing that she will be left alone in the world after her father's death, Rahul decides to marry her a few days later, against his father's wishes. Yash becomes quite upset, seething and furiously outraged when Rahul arrives back home with Anjali in tow, claiming that Rahul's action is egregiously unforgivable, contrary to the Raichand family blood. Yash ruthlessly disowns Rahul and forcibly evicts him from the house, snarling that Rahul is dead to him. He angrily demands Rahul to move out of his house and get out of his life. With no other option, Rahul takes his leave, and takes Anjali with him.
Nandini and Rahul share a tearful goodbye. Nandini also sends Rahul's nanny Sayeeda (Farida Jalal) so that Rahul can always feel a mother's love. Before leaving, Rahul visits Rohan who is in boarding school and advises him on what to do when he wishes to achieve something in life. He requests that Rohan never asks why he left or where he went.
A decade later, a grown-up Rohan (Hrithik Roshan) learns from his grandmothers, Achala Sachdev (Yash's mother) and Sushma Seth (Nandini's mother), the fact that Rahul was adopted and also the reason why he left. Rohan sees the pain of a broken family divided; he vows to bring Rahul and Anjali back home, no matter what it costs. He learns from Sayeeda's daughter that Rahul has relocated London with Anjali and her little sister Pooja. Rohan lies his parents that he intends to do his MBA in London, which they agree to let him do.
In London, Rahul and Anjali have become wealthy. They are raising a young son named Krishi. Rohan enrolls into King's College where a grown-up Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) is also a student. Rohan and Pooja meet and he tells her that he has come to take his brother and sister-in-law back to their rightful places in their home in India. Pooja agrees to help Rohan take Rahul and Anjali back. Pooja informs Rahul that Rohan is her friend's cousin who has come from India to study and needs a place to stay. Rahul reluctantly agrees to let the young man stay, not knowing who he really is. Rohan reminds the family of how much they miss India.
At a school function, Rohan asks Krishi to perform the Indian National Anthem. When Krishi informs everybody about this, Rahul discovers Rohan's true identity (Rohan uses exactly the same words of advice that Rahul had spoken to him ten years ago). Rohan tearfully begs his brother to come home - he says that Nandini loves Rahul the most and always will. Rahul refuses as he still believes that Yash does not love him. Pooja, however, feels sure that Rahul will go back home. She encourages Rohan to invite his parents over to London and get them to meet Rahul. Nandini and Rahul share a happy reunion. But Rahul still refuses to talk to his father.
Shortly Yash finds out the truth that Rohan had lied to him about the London trip, he becomes outraged at Rohan. Yash's mother is on her death bed and her last wish is for her funeral pyre to be lit by Yash, Rahul and Rohan together. They all travel back to India for the funeral, but Rahul and Yash do not speak with one another.
Nandini tells Yash, for the first time in ten years, that she believes he was wrong in cutting off ties with Rahul. Rohan talks sense into Rahul and makes him realize just how much Yash and Nandini really love him. When Rahul and Yash encounter each other once again, for the first time in years, in the living room of Yash's mansion, they both share an emotionally tearful reunion. All is forgiven when Yash reconciles with Rahul after burying the hatchet. Yash sincerely apologizes to Rahul for disowning his elder son and also admits that he has always loved him. Rohan and Pooja get married and the family also have a belated celebration of Rahul and Anjali's wedding. The credits come up with a family portrait.
