Few television shows are simultaneously so bonkers and compelling that they inspire ire and enthusiasm from their viewers in equal measure, but the original run of Pretty Little Liars nailed it. From 2010 to 2017, Pll arrived at just the right time for millennials to freak out and theorize online about its mysterious and ridiculous plot points. Much of that joy came from the outlandish tactics of psychological warfare that the villain used against the show’s teenage protagonists – but there were a few moments when A got physical, too.
A quick synopsis: Pll was a soapy young adult thriller in which a group of friends is tormented by a black-hoodied enemy known as “A.” A will go to all kinds of lengths to make the group’s lives uncomfortable by taunting them with anonymous texts, blackmailing them into doing mean crap to each other, and warning them away from getting too...

Japanese director Miike Takashi, who is known for slasher film “Ichi the Killer” and stomach-churning “Audition,” has signed with CAA for representation.
Miike is one of Japan’s most prolific and bold directors, with more than 100 feature film credits, spanning genres, including horror, comedy and action. “Ichi The Killer” and “Audition” enjoy cult followings globally.
The auteur has also received acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival for “Shield of Straw,” “Gozu” and “Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai.”
His film “Crows Zero” is immensely popular in Asia, especially among Gen Z.
In March, Miike was selected to represent Japan in Apple’s “shot on iPhone” project, directing a short film based on Osamu Tezuka’s iconic 1986 manga “Midnight,” now streaming worldwide.
In 2022, he directed drama series “Connect,” produced by South Korea’s Studio Dragon and distributed by Disney+, which is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S. “I’m...

Quentin Tarantino is undoubtedly one of the finest filmmakers of our time. But as much as he is a passionate filmmaker, he is also a passionate cinephile: having absorbed the best that contemporary cinema has to offer since childhood, Tarantino bases his work on the most recognizable tropes and directorial styles, creating a refined pop culture mishmash. And as a huge film buff, Tarantino shared a list of the 20 films he 'admires the most' in a conversation with Sky Movies in 2009.
20 Must-Watch Movies According to Tarantino
Before we get to the list itself, it's important to note that it's not in order of importance, but in alphabetical order. Except for the number one, because for Tarantino it is 'favorite movie that has come out in the last 17 years.' Besides, as he pointed out, this is one of the few movies he would personally dream of directing.

Sometimes we can’t help but start binging the movies of a single genre one by one, having some sort of a marathon. And while I can relate to those who binge rom-coms because they’re sweet and innocent, it seems that horror nights are getting more popular among others.
For example, redditors quite often get together online to happily share their favorite horrors and discuss them. So here are three horror movies that are considered their all-time favorites.
1. Audition (1999)
Audition is a psychological horror film directed by Takashi Miike featuring Ryo Ishibashi and Eihi Shiina. The movie revolves around a hopeless widower who is trying to come back in the dating game again. With the help of his friend, he stages a phony audition to find a perfect girl for him. And so he thinks he does.

Out this week in theaters is Radio Silence’s Abigail, a heist-turned-bloodbath when kidnappers realize the child ballerina they’ve snatched isn’t quite human. That the petite vampire is a ballerina feels apt. After all, the deceptive art form has a reputation for dainty elegance that belies the sheer grueling dedication of its performers, both physically and mentally.
Ballet requires a high level of dedication to practice and performance and frequently spills over into body horror through broken toenails, stress fractures, and overuse injuries. In other words, ballet is often a mix of pain and beauty, which means it pairs well with horror.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to ballerinas in horror.
These horror movies feature at least one ballerina tormented by her art form, highlighting the stark, beguiling contrast between beauty and horror. Here’s where you can stream them now.

Adobe’s generative artificial intelligence flagship is Firefly, a text-to-image tool that powers generative fill-in for Photoshop and text-to-vector in Illustrator. However, the 2024 Firefly model will power three AI video tools inside video editing software Premiere Pro: Generative Extend, Object Addition and Removal, and Text to Video.
Premiere already allows video editors to integrate Adobe creative cloud software like After Effects (motion graphics) and Audition (sound mixing). Today’s announcement makes clear that Adobe will take the same approach with AI. The company also announced that it is in “early explorations” to integrate video generation from OpenAI (Sora), Runway, and Pika Labs into Premiere.
Last week, Adobe demonstrated these new gen AI tools for IndieWire and shared examples (see video at the top of the page) of what will be available inside Premiere Pro before the end of the year.

Each new episode of Shōgun raises the stakes, deepens the political intrigue, and brings us closer to the brink of war. It’s a description that, years ago, would have applied to Game of Thrones, a show to which Shōgun has been compared ad nauseam. It’s not an inappropriate comparison. Both tout sprawling casts, sweeping locations, political intrigue, backstabbing, and characters residing in moral gray areas, ready to surprise and disappoint. Though, it may be more apt to compare the show to Japan’s Chanbara or samurai films.
Given Shōgun’s intensity and cliffhangers, waiting a week between episodes is excruciating. Digging back into Game of Thrones or even House of the Dragon might not scratch that Shōgun itch in the long days between installments.
Instead, let’s dive into samurai epics in and around the Edo period when Ieyasu Tokugawa unified Japan and built a shogunate that ruled for more than two centuries,...

The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).
This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). In what is a refreshing — at least for us at Filmmaker — changeup from the usual sorts of films that get the iPhone demo treatment, Apple has released a new 19-minute short, Midnight, directed by Takashi Miike. It’s no Audition or Ichi the Killer, naturally, but his adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s manga is a lot of fun. Takashi Miike works, still, at such a tireless pace that it was just a matter of time until he shot an entire project with the camera in his pocket. Strange though it is seeing the man behind Audition and Ichi the Killer make sponsored content for the world’s biggest tech company, Miike took an opportunity (and what I can only assume is a rather healthy payday) to shoot a characteristically manic, action-heavy short, Midnight, on the iPhone 15 Pro.
Obviously a director of Miike’s stature can access superb post-production studios––evidenced most clearly by the animation, VFX, and black-and-white images, but running all throughout 19 minutes colored and graded a bit more lavishly than what even the newest iPhone might capture. Nobody has ever asked Takashi Miike for naturalism, though, and it’s nice knowing his manic, metal sensibility isn’t dulled too much by a camera downgrade.

Here’s a nice surprise to get you over Hump Day: Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike secretly shot a 19-minute short film, titled “Midnight,” on an Apple iPhone 15 Pro. Apple quietly released the film on YouTube.
“Midnight,” originally a manga by Osamu Tezuka and directed for film by Miike, follows a mysterious taxi driver, Midnight, who lends a hand to Kaede, a young girl chased by assassins. This dude is a hell of a lot better than that “Cash Cab” guy, and “Midnight” is a hell of a lot better than your home iPhone videos.
Midnight can see the near future, which makes him one of the only people outside of Miike himself who saw this film coming. But when you do see it, you’ll probably want to trade in your Samsung device.

Midnight is one of manga master Osamu Tezuka's lesser-known works. Published in two parts just two years before his passing, it tells the story of Midnight, a mysterious taxi driver who encounters strange passengers during his late-night drives. Today, a new short film has dropped, inspired by the classic manga—and it was filmed entirely on the iPhone 15 Pro. The 19-minute film was directed by Takashi Miike, known for everything from gritty films like Audition and Ichi the Killer to his adaptations of Ace Attorney and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure . Film and TV actor Kento Kaku plays Midnight, who roams the streets of Tokyo in his specially modified taxi. Konatsu Kato plays Kaede, a young trucker on the run from her father's killer (played by Yukiyoshi Ozawa). Miike himself has a cameo as Kaede's late father in a flashback. Watch the entire short here. Don't forget to turn on...

Few things in this world are more frightening than dating. In addition to the fear of getting stood up or rejected, women have the added bonus of worrying that the person they’ve matched with might turn out to be a serial killer. It’s just smart to text your location and the photo of your blind date to a friend while asking for advice on which earrings best complement your impossibly sexy First Date Dress. “Audition” is quite a historic production (at least for its cult following), since it was the film that established Takashi Miike as a prominent member of the horror category and Eihi Shiina as a “priestess” of the grotesque.

His 17-year-old son, Shigehiko, who worries about the turn his father's life seem to have taken, prompts him to meet new women. Yoshikawa, a friend of Shigeharu and a film producer, proposes that he take part in a sham in order to meet women, an idea he agrees to. According to the plan, actresses would...

"This is your life! Right here, right now!" The famed art house cinema in New York called Metrograph has introduced a new screening series of movies called 25Y2K. They're borrowing inspiration from the brilliant Crtierion Channel collections, featuring a thematic selection of iconic movies to feature in a special package. This time they're looking back at Y2K, and the "Millennium Bug", and how it affected cinema. "A computer glitch that was supposed to drown the world in darkness—[was] on everyone's lips, the air thick with the anticipation of apocalypse. Did that anxiety impress itself on some of the finest films?" Definitely. They're showing classics like Fight Club, Pi, The Truman Show, American Psycho, Strange Days, Audition, Being John Malkovich, Vanilla Sky, American Beauty, and others. To promote the series, Metrograph cut together a quick trailer with Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" which samples a line from the film Strange Days.

The great irony of Halloween is that in subjecting ourselves to scares of the kitschy seasonal-grocery-aisle variety, we somehow inoculate ourselves, for a moment, the Irl horrors that so consistently plague us each day online in the news each day. But horror movies and other October-end entertainments aren’t necessarily always simply a distraction. Just as often they’re an honest expression of universal human anxieties, dressed up in a foul-smelling rubber mask from the ad-hoc aisles of your local Spirit Halloween retail outlet.
Why we love it: October is the ideal and most obvious time to revisit Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Though each Halloween episode of the series is wonderful in its own way (shout-out to sexy-ghost Willow), it’s “Fear, Itself” that I still watch every year. The Scooby Gang finds themselves trapped inside a fraternity house of horrors, as fear demon “Gachnar” exploits their deepest anxieties I...

Stand-up comedian / actor Bill Burr just made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix-released comedy Old Dads (you can read the JoBlo review at This Link), which is cool and all… but here on Arrow in the Head, the horror side of the JoBlo Network, we’re more interested in hearing Burr’s opinions on horror films. That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.
The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

Netflix has picked up rights to Japanese financial drama series “Trillion Game” from leading local broadcaster Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) and will begin airing it from Saturday.

They have no business plan and no capital and must come up with innovative ways to raise money and get ahead.
The story was based on a manga originally written by Inagaki Riichiro and illustrated by Ikegami Ryoichi that was serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Superior magazine from 2020.

The niece of legendary R&b and soul singer Bobby Womack blew the coaches away on Monday’s (October 9) edition of NBC‘s The Voice, earning four chair spins and a guaranteed ticket to the next round. JaRae Womack, the 35-year-old from West Palm Beach, Florida, opened up about her family’s musical history before she took to the stage for her Blind Audition. “My grandfather is amazing; he’s Cecil Womack,” she said. “He was in a group called The Valentinos, Sam Cooke started their career. He did his own solo career. And my uncle Bobby Womack, he ventured off and did his own solo career, and now it’s time for JaRae Womack.” JaRae did her family proud as she delivered a soulful rendition of Amy Winehouse‘s “Back to Black,” earning chair turns from all four coaches and a standing ovation. “That was insane,” Niall Horan said,...

For many cinephiles, especially those with a keen interest in Asian cinema, one of their first encounters with Japanese cinema comes in the shape of Takashi Miike’s works. Given the sheer number of features he has made ever since he got started at the beginning of the 1990s, this comes as no surprise. Movies such as “Ichi – The Killer”, “Dead or Alive” and “Audition” have cemented the reputation of Miike internationally and introduced many to his cinematic style, which has proven to very influential among his colleagues as well. However, with over 100 films directed, there are obviously a number of them which are either simply bad (“Salaryman Kintaro”) or have gone under the radar as Miike’s more popular works cast a shadow over them. One of these examples is “Blues Harp”, which is not only an overlooked gem in his filmography, but also, in my opinion, one...

While Konami seems to have been hogging all of the animated Netflix video game adaptations lately, Capcom has countered with a new trailer for Onimusha, which is set to start streaming on November 2. Set to “The Loneliest” by Måneskin, the trailer doesn’t get into the demon-slaying that the video games are known for just yet, but that’s quickly rectified.
Unlike the Castlevania Netflix adaptations, Onimusha instead utilizes 3D animation with a cel-shaded art style from animation studio Sublimation and director Shinya Sugai, whose work includes the CG anime adaptation of another Capcom property, Dragon’s Dogma.
Directed by Takashi Miike and featuring the voice talents of Akio Otsuka, Toshihiko Seki, Hochu Otsuka, Daiki Yamashita, Subaru Kimura and Katsuyuki Konishi, Onimusha will focus on Miyamoto Musashi, who is modeled after Japanese film icon Toshiro Mifune.

Celebrity-fan encounters have become the internet’s bread-and-butter in 2023; every user-driven rabbit hole from Reddit to the gossip pages of Instagram (shoutout to deuxmoi) is full of supposed insider info on who’s a sweetheart, and who’s an Irl monster. There’s almost a currency to having met a famous person, and everyone online, anonymous or not, is keen to sell their story – mostly just for clout over any actual cash. So whether you’re an actor or a musician, or even just a familiar-face from a meme, the message is the same: play nice, or be prepared to face the social media backlash.
It’s a dangerous world to navigate, especially for working actors like Faceless After Dark star Jenna Kanell, who co-writes this sharp, scathing home invasion thriller about just that, an often deadly relationship with the spotlight.

Horror is slaying the box office in 2023, accounting for 12 of the year's top 45 films through July. The genre is also killing it with critics: 43 horror movies are rated "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. 2023 will likely go down as one of horror's greatest years, but not because of those reasons.
Horror fans know kills mean nothing without context. Because of ticket costs, comparing eras through the box office lens is like judging your waistline in a funhouse mirror. Similarly, critical praise can mislead because modern horror critics are often genre fans while, older generations many times did not understand the genre's value. When comparing horror eras, you need to close your eyes to tomatoes and ticket sales, and instead focus on your heart and your gut — then let it all spill out.
While ranking the 14 greatest years of horror cinema, I gave greater weight to foundational horror because it laid the groundwork for modern horror's ascension.

At one point in “Dead Or Alive 2: Birds,” two childhood friends who have reunited after decades of separation put on a wacky school play for a classroom of young students. They do silly voices and dance around in animal costumes. The children laugh, even as the performers make obscene gestures and simulate sex acts. The inappropriateness of it all doesn't seem to bother anyone–they're all having too much fun. As this is happening, a Yakuza-Triad gang war is breaking out in the city. Gangsters shoot and slash and brutalize one another. Killers defile their dead victims and bleeding men cry out for mercy.
This montage, like so much of “Birds,” is an encapsulation of Takashi Miike's many modes. It runs the gamut from wacky and tender to perverse and vicious, and this melding of styles makes it maybe the best entry point into an infamously scattershot filmography.

Japanese genre auteur Takashi Miike is notorious for taking his cinema to extreme limits, whether that’s in terms of violence or sexual depravity. And over a career that spans three decades, he’s directed some classics: “Audition,” “Ichi The Killer,” the “Dead Or Alive” trilogy, and “Hara-Kiri,” just to name a few. Now the prolific director has another film on the way, and it sounds like a perfect fit for him.

Released last year as a world premiere at Fantaspoa film festival, Yoshihiro Nishimura's new work stars transgender actress Anna Nagasaki in a picture that is, as usual, wild, bloody, and fun. However, the limits of the director's creations are becoming more and more apparent since, despite its pleasant sides, the movie feels very recycled.

As with all of Yoshihiro Nishimura's films, it is hard to accurately describe the unfolding story. Sometimes the characters' names are not given, incongruous events occur apace, and the moral, if there is one, is blurred. But we will give it a try. The storyline centers on a Chinese yakuza organization, discriminated against by the Japanese, which has just lost its leader and several of its members. Cornered, the survivors are aided by a young pink-haired woman who comes out of nowhere and fights with vigor.

Twenty-seven years ago, Drew Barrymore’s movie night was ruined when she picked up a phone call that should have gone unanswered. The resulting carnage remains one of the most chilling moments in slasher cinema. Thus began Scream, a horror movie that changed the face of the genre and which nearly three decades later is still going strong. In fact, Ghostface—the mysterious and chatty Halloween costume worn by various killers—ranks these days among the movie monsters he once idolized. Freddy, Jason, even Michael Myers have had to make room for a character whose series is arguably just as popular now as it was in 1996.
Through it all, the Scream movies have found surprisingly consistent ways of keeping the formula fresh while maintaining the core concept: a group of young people who consider themselves media savvy find themselves trapped in a retro scary movie that also doubles as a particularly gory whodunit.

Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon” has a strong possibility to win two Oscars on Sunday night despite it only receiving three bids, all in technical categories. What Kyle Smith in the Wall Street Journal called “one of the year’s richest and most ambitious films” is up for Academy Award nominations in Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Score. Although it’s not a favorite to win for its costumes — “Elvis” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” have better shots there, per Gold Derby odds — it can absolutely win both production design and score. Here are the five reasons “Babylon” will win two Oscars on March 12.
1. Academy voters will want to reward the film somewhere.
Although some of the response to the Paramount Pictures film was mixed, there’s been a lot of passion for “Babylon” in the months since its release. If Oscar voters want to reward a film...
