It’s a fairly packed month on Hulu this February thanks to the addition of some interesting TV shows from FX and ABC. While the streamer’s own original content is somewhat limited – Life + Beth is returning for season 2 – you can also catch the new series of Feud this month. The new installment in Ryan Murphy’s juicy anthology show is based on the bestseller Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer, and tells the story of Truman Capote’s betrayal and fall-out with New York’s most glamorous socialites. The cast is absolutely stacked, with Naomi Watts, Diane Lane, Chloë Sevigny and Calista Flockhart all swearing delicious revenge on Tom Hollander’s Capote.
Also via Hulu in February comes the third season of Abbott Elementary, along with new episodes of The Connors, The Good Doctor, Will Trent,...

Big George Foreman is a film directed by George Tillman Jr. starring Khris Davis.
Some movies simply wait for a great story to do all the work.
Foreman’s life was quite a story.
We can’t say the same for the film.
Movie Review
Some said the voiceover was anti-cinematic, and it was Scorsese (among others) who denied it film after film. This Big George Foreman wants to have a lot of Scorsese without achieving his pace, effectiveness and, above all, grace, and narrative freshness.
Big George Foreman is a film that resorts, at all times, to the obvious, to direct compassion, to that piece of American History a thousand times told in a thousand better ways and with more elaborate plots and less flat characters and, in the end, with more to say.
It is well executed technically, it knows how to behave, but the script’s compassionate...

You ever notice how HBO’s releases tend to do the heavy lifting in HBO Max’s content library? It all starts early on with season 2 of the delightful comedy Reservation Dogs on Aug. 3. That is followed up by the docuseries Children of the Underground on Aug. 13, Little Demon on Aug. 26, and The Patient of Aug. 30. The most interesting of the bunch,...

“There is a new studio Star System…but instead of focusing on acting talent (as it did in the 1930s), it prioritizes those with the skills to create new stories, produce new shows and manage the evolution of new character IP…in other words, to make content that will succeed by the measures important in the new world order,” Ampere Analysis’ Guy Bisson announced at MipTV in a presentation.

Cuba Gooding Jr. pleaded guilty to one count of forcible touching in a criminal case that accused him of violating three different women at Manhattan nightclubs in 2018 and 2019, according to the Associated Press.
As part of his plea deal, Gooding avoids jail time and must continue his alcohol and behavior counseling, which he began in 2019, for six more months without any arrests. If he complies, then the conviction will be reduced to a violation, which is not a crime.
Gooding was arrested in June 2019 after an incident at a Manhattan club, after which he was released and the trial was delayed several times. A 29-year-old woman told police that Gooding squeezed her breast without her consent at the Magic Hour Rooftop Bar & Lounge near Times Square. After that incident, two more women came forward with accusations of inappropriate touching. One woman, who was a server at Tao Downtown, alleged that...

Hamburg 1982. Andreas, in the family bathroom, spies his mother’s stockings, pulls one over his head breathing in deeply. His mother, still in a dressing gown, calls him to breakfast. As she makes him cheese on toast, he oggles her breasts.
Cut to the present. Andreas lives in a deeply religious Bavarian hamlet with Claudia, his besotted, church-frequenting, apron dress wearing wife. But he sinks into sexual reverie and perversion, unable to escape the distant past. Tragedy ensues, near inevitably, it could be argued.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, helmer of the Oscar-nominated “Downfall,” “The Diver” is one of six episodes in anthology series “The Punishment,” in which six of Germany’s most exciting directors, established and up-and-coming, adapt six short stories by Ferdinand von Schirach collected in his latest anthology, “Punishment” (“Strafe”).

Six years ago, a grandma in Arizona mistakenly invited a stranger to her Thanksgiving dinner. What started as an accidental text message — a humorous exchange that quickly went viral on social media — has turned into an unlikely friendship and a heartwarming holiday tradition.
Now, Netflix is turning the feel-good story into a feature film.
“The Thanksgiving Text” will recount the true tale that began in 2016, when Wanda Dench thought she was texting her grandson to check if he would be coming over for Turkey Day. Apparently, she had the wrong cell phone number. She actually texted Jamal Hinton, a high school senior at the time, who accepted her invitation anyway — and has attended her feast every year since.
In their initial exchange, Hinton received a text from an unknown number inviting him to Thanksgiving dinner (at 3 p.m. — but that’s neither here nor there). When he asked who it was,...

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.
The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.
Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.
Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.
He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.
The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.
“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”
“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”
Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.
The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.

And just like that – here comes spring. Amazon Prime‘s list of new releases for April 2021 isn’t as cheery as one would expect from the sunny season. But perhaps that’s by design – you should be outside anyway!
Amazon’s most prominent original series for April 2021 is undoubtedly Them from multi-hyphenate Lena Waithe. This horror anthology’s first season, subtitled “Covenant”, will center on a Black family in the 1950s who move from North Carolina to a white neighborhood in Los Angeles. It premieres on April 9. Given its name and premise, Them is drawing some (largely joke-y) comparisons to Jordan Peele’s Us on social media. But hey, the world could always use some more Us.

Exclusive: George Tillman, Jr. and Robert Teitel’s State Street Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television.
Under the pact, Tillman, Jr. and Robert Teitel will develop new projects for the studio, working with State Street’s Jay Marcus who has been promoted to Head of Film & Television and will spearhead day-to-day efforts related to the deal.
The first-look agreement expands director-producer Tillman Jr.’s relationship with Sony Pictures TV, the studio behind ABC’s series For Life. Tillman directed and executive produced the pilot for the praised legal and family drama about an imprisoned man who becomes a lawyer, litigating cases for other inmates while fighting to overturn his own life sentence for a crime he didn’t commit.
“I had such a wonderful creative experience with Sony on the pilot of For Life and am thrilled to continue that relationship with this new deal,” said Tillman Jr.

Aunjanue Ellis and Andrene Ward-Hammond have been cast in the upcoming AMC series “61st Street,” Variety has learned.
They join previously announced cast members Courtney B. Vance, Tosin Cole, and Bentley Green. “61st Street,” which has been ordered as a two-season television event series with eight episodes per season, is a courtroom drama that follows Moses Johnson (Cole), a promising, black high school athlete, who is swept up into the infamously corrupt Chicago criminal justice system. Taken by the police as a supposed gang member, he finds himself in the eye of the storm as police and prosecutors seek revenge for the death of an officer during a drug bust gone wrong.
Ellis will appear in the series regular role of Martha Roberts, a candidate for alderman on the South Side who is very skilled at telling the voting public that her drive and ambition will be placed at their service.

This is great news for fans of quirky, unpredictable, and always entertaining TV. Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

“The Hate U Give” is not your ordinary sentimental studio drama that rounds off the edges, designed for maximum uplift. Much credit goes to Angie Thomas’ edgy 2017 novel (whose title was inspired by Tupac Shakur’s “Thug Life”: “The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody”), which remained on the New York Times Young Adult bestseller list for 50 weeks. That gave Fox 2000 chief Elizabeth Gabler the confidence to hew close to its gritty #BlackLivesMatter narrative about high schooler Starr (Amandla Stenberg), who finds her activist identity after witnessing a white police officer shoot and kill her childhood friend.
After its welcoming Toronto International Film Festival debut, “The Hate U Give” shot out of the gate in platform release — Fox is building word of mouth as it expands to more theaters — with rave reviews. But for the cast, the current success is just a natural extension of the galvanizing experience on set.

Two decades ago, Joshua Leonard was a 21-year-old wanderer, working in experimental film production in New York, in the final throes of drug addiction, and uncertain what he wanted to do in life. His father taught theater, but Leonard never considered acting as a career; on a whim, he pursued a role in a microbugeted found-footage horror movie. It was called “The Blair Witch Project,” and it went on to gross nearly $250 million worldwide on a $60,000 budget.
“I came into my career sideways,” the 42-year-old said in New York last week, a few days before his latest role, as a psychopathic stalker in Steven Soderbergh’s “Unsane,” hit theaters. It was a brisk, sunny afternoon in Greenwich Village. He was sitting on a bench in Washington Square Park, a few blocks from the apartment where he was staying while his wife, Alison Pill, acted in the Broadway production of “Three Tall Women” alongside Laurie Metcalf.

Veteran’s Day is November 11. While we all try to escape from the most exasperating Presidential Campaign in our history let me pay tribute to the Men and Women who have served in the military to insure we keep our electoral process and our freedoms.
Having served in the Navy four years (there he goes again!) I have a keen interest in any movie about the military, especially the sea service. I did serve during peace time so had no experience with combat but still spent most of my tour of duty at sea on an aircraft carrier, the USS Amerca CV66. Among other jobs I ran the ship’s television station for almost two years. Movies have always been important to me and so providing a few hours of entertainment every day when we were at sea was just about the best job I could have had.

Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood's love story parallels a romance from decades past in a new featurette for The Longest Ride.

"It's eight seconds. That girl could be the rest of your life." Just in time for Valentine's Day, the latest Nicholas Sparks romance The Longest Ride has gotten a new trailer. However, this isn't full of the whimsy and cheesy romance that we're used to seeing in trailers for these kind of films. Instead, this one seems geared towards the Fifty Shades of Grey audiences (it's probably playing before the film this weekend) with pretty steamy moments between Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood. And because of that, the past romance Alan Alda recounts takes a backseat for sexiness. It just feels like too much. Watch? Here's the latest trailer for George Tillman Jr.'s The Longest Ride from 20th Century Fox: You can still watch the first trailer for The Longest Ride right here. The Longest Ride is directed by George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor, Soul Food, Notorious) and...

Fox has released the first trailer for The Longest Ride, the latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation sure to end with a woman that's either been talking to a ghost the whole time or inexplicable heart transplants starring Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland) and Scott Eastwood for director George Tillman Jr.. Considering Tillman has directed the likes of Faster, Notorious and Men of Honor it's a wonder how he landed a gig directing this movie, but so be it. Set for release on April 10, the film centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke (Eastwood), a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia (Robertson), a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City's art world. As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected connection with Ira (Alan Alda), whose memories of his own decades-long romance with...

Admittedly, I was a little hesitant to post this, since it’s not a black film, as it doesn't tell a story about black people in it (at least, it doesn't look that way in the trailer). But it was directed by a black director, George Tillman Jr. And as you can see, his latest film, "The Longest Ride," for Fox, coming out on April 10th, is light years away from anything he’s done previously, including "Soul Food," "Notorious," "Men of Honor," "Faster" and "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete." This time around, Tillman heads straight into young rural romance territory, in this film version of Nicholas Sparks’ best...

Another year, another Nicholas Sparks movie is coming to theaters for people who just can't get enough of cheesy melodrama and romance. Given the flare of recording artist Hozier and a bit more sexiness along with the struggles of love, The Longest Ride at least slightly different from the fare we've come to expect from the author of The Notebook, Dear John and Safe Haven. There's a split love story here just like The Notebook, but with two different couples, one from today (Scott Eastwood & Britt Roberteson) and one from the past (Jack Huston & Oona Chaplin). It's about what you would expect from a movie like this, but it seems like Sparks is drawing characters from a hat. Here's a bull rider and an art student! Watch? Here's the first trailer for George Tillman Jr.'s The Longest Ride from 20th Century Fox: The Longest Ride is directed by George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor,...

The Blair Witch Project celebrates its 15th anniversary in the UK today (October 22).
The frightening, low-budget, found-footage horror movie was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, and featured an unknown cast who used their own names in the film.
The Blair Witch Project 15 years on: The horror movie that changed everything
It became the first of its kind in Hollywood due to its commercial success and viral online campaign, which was created to make the production look like a real documentary. The Blair Witch website with details on the made-up mythology still exists.
And the clever campaign worked on some gullible and vulnerable viewers. We remember witnessing real tears of fear being shed by some audience members in the cinema (and definitely not ours...).
It purports to be a documentary shot by three inquisitive, daring, and at times daft students investigating the local Blair Witch legend in the Maryland forest.

For two weeks every year, New York City finds itself more . . . culturally diverse. What, you ask? How can the already most culturally diverse place in the world get more so? Well that’s easy to answer with Robert DeNiro’s, Jane Rosenthal’s and Craig Hatkoff’s eleventh annual Tribeca Film Festival. Created in 2003 in response to the 9/11 attacks, the festival has come to feature both established filmmakers and first timers alike in the celebration of not only cinema but everything that it evokes within the audience.
The Tribeca Film Festival kicked off its Espn Sports Film Festival Gala with director Michael Rapaport’s documentary When the Garden Was Eden. About the New York Knicks during the 1970s, the film featured clips and players from the championship as well as others talking about how the team won its glory.

Following yesterday's debut of the trailer for The Best of Me, yet another romance based on a Nicholas Sparks novel, we have news about development of an adaptation of another book from the author. Deadline reports Fox 2000 has set veteran actor Alan Alda to star in The Longest Ride from director George Tillman Jr. (Soul Food, Men of Honor, Notorious). The story follows a man snowbound and stuck in his car after a major crash on an isolated road. As he is stranded, he drifts in and out of consciousness, flashing back to the love of his life, who died sometime earlier. But there's another romance involved too. You might remember that Scott Eastwood, son of iconic actor and director Clint Eastwood, has already been lined up for a role in this adaptation. He's playing a handsome bull rider named Luke who falls in love with a young art history major named Sophia.
