As Reece Shearsmith just announced, it’s the beginning of the end for Inside No. 9. Filming on the horror-comedy anthology’s ninth and final series began in late 2023, which means a wrap on one of the BBC’s most consistently entertaining and inventive shows is imminent.
Oh it's the beginning of the end. #insideno9
— Reece Shearsmith ❄️ (@ReeceShearsmith) January 8, 2024
Series nine is expected to air in spring 2024, and will add a final six episodes to the existing 49 stories in Shearsmith and co-creator Steve Pemberton’s back catalogue. Barring the first look image above, which shows Pemberton in drag at an underground train station (platform no. nine?), we don’t know anything about the stories, settings or characters yet, but we do know who’ll be joining the pair as guest stars… and it’s a deep bench.

So Alien: Covenant. What was that all about then? Spoiler alert, as we delve into some of its lingering questions...
Nb: This article contains copious Prometheus and Alien: Covenant spoilers.
If you've seen Alien: Covenant, then you'll know by now that it's a very different beast from its predecessor, Prometheus. Where the last Alien prequel was as stately as an ocean-going liner, Covenant moves about like an out-of-control racing car. Once all the atmosphere-building's out of the way and the latest ship full of explorers lands on the ironically-named planet, Paradise, things go wrong with breathtaking speed.
In essence, it's the story of humans - led by the resourceful Daniels (Katherine Waterstone) - versus the crazed synthetic scientist David (Michael Fassbender, with his accents) and an army of ghoulish monsters. There's copious blood, teeth and ooze, and more than a few lingering questions to address.
So with one final warning for spoilers,...

Den Of Geek raises a glass to some lesser-known soap star pop singles, from Coronation Street to Neighbours and more...
“Do you remember the guy who played that guy in that thing? His song was good wasn't it?”
The above is an example of a conversation regularly heard in our house. The only variants are that sometimes it was 'that girl from that thing', and a lot of the time the song was far from good.
Well sod it – I think we as a nation need to have more discussions about Craig McLachlan and Stefan Dennis. It's the only way our society will grow. So here are 12 songs from Soapland that weren't done by Kylie, Jason, or Kylie and Jason.

The closer Vinyl sticks to the music, the better everything works...
This review contains spoilers.
1.8 E.A.B.
In January 1977, around three or so years after the events of Vinyl’s first season, punk fanzine Sideburns carried a simple drawing of the finger placings for three guitar chords. Its text ran as follows: "here’s a chord. Here’s another one. Here’s a third. Now go and form a band". The cartoon became legendary (and frequently attributed to the better known Sniffin’ Glue fanzine) largely because it seemed to encapsulate the punk ethic. The conventional narrative is that the simple, direct ‘anti-musicianship’ was a necessary response to the bloated virtuosity of mainstream performers. Punk, so the theory goes, was a corrective moment that stripped music right back to basics. Three chords, E, A, B.

Jerseys, uniforms, strips, kits. They’re called different things in different places, but they serve the same purpose across all sports. They create an identity and for some sports teams, help them become a recognisable brand worldwide. There is not a country on Earth which isn’t home to at least one Manchester United shirt, surely!?
When done right they can become iconic. Think of Real Madrid’s all white home kit, New York Yankee’s pinstripes, Green Bay Packers’ green and yellow or Chicago Bulls red and black and you immediately remember some of the greatest sports jerseys of all time. It’s quite easy to make a great jersey, bold colours and simple designs tend to be loved by sports fans, meaning that in theory it would be hard to get them so wrong.
Like many theories however, in practice the reality is much farther from the truth.

Just a few years ago, many people wouldn't have known who Nick Grimshaw was. That all changed in July 2012 when he was announced as Chris Moyles's successor on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show.
Grimshaw's meteoric rise continues, as he was confirmed earlier this week as a new judge on arguably TV's biggest show, The X Factor.
But who exactly is the floppy-haired fellow, and how did he become such an omnipresent household name? Below we chart the rise and rise (and rise) of Nick Grimshaw.

Harry Hill's revamp of Stars in Their Eyes has reportedly been dropped by ITV after one series.
The show relaunched in January after being off air for nine years but struggled in the ratings and received some poor reviews from critics - although some praised its tongue-in-cheek style.
The Sun has now claimed that the show will not be returning for a second series.
The report claims that while ITV executives were happy with the show, the low ratings and struggle to capture viewers mean that it will not be getting any more episodes.
However, Hill is expected to maintain a relationship with ITV, with the report claiming that he recently filmed a pilot called Harry Hill's Tea Time.
The show - apparently described as "TV Burp meets cookery" - would see Hill preparing a three-course meal with a celebrity guest.

There's clearly something in the water at ITV.
The past couple of weekends have seen the launch of two brand new programmes on the channel - circus skill, er, thing Get Your Act Together and an almost unrecognisable revamp of Stars in Their Eyes.
To put it very politely, neither have been received favourably by the public.
Get Your Act Together, presented by Stephen Mulhern, largely featured ex-Dancing on Ice contestants performing sub-par talents, while Stars in Their Eyes presenter Harry Hill has been criticised for ruining the original programme and tainting our '90s nostalgia by throwing baked goods around and doing silly skits.
So, to paraphrase Harry himself: Get Your Act Together vs Stars in Their Eyes - which is better?
There's only one way to find out! Vote in our poll below:...

We might not have Dancing on Ice anymore, but ITV's hoping to keep us entertained during the winter months with a brand new show! Get Your Act Together sees a whole host of celebrities teaming up with famous variety acts to learn their skills - and then trying to perform them to a live studio audience (who decide whether or not they get through).

A lot of people were pretty annoyed with Stars in Their Eyes when it returned this weekend.
On Saturday, the internet was up in arms claiming Harry Hill 'wasn't funny', ITV have 'ruined a classic' and – seriously –'bring back Matthew Kelly'.
Many had no doubt tuned in expecting Hill to emerge from the dry ice and sliding doors with a carbon copy of Kelly's (and Cat and Leslie's) version of the show, and so were left bitterly disappointed. We, meanwhile, were over the moon.
Harry Hill's Stars in Their Eyes was, shock horror, actually something different. The show was still about plucky members of the public wanting to emulate their musical heroes, but that's where the similarities ended.
Viewers who have never 'got' Harry Hill had tuned in lured by the promise of an ITV classic, and yet were smacked in the face with Hill's surreal mockery of what a singing competition is.

Stars In Their Eyes returned to ITV tonight (Saturday January 10) after a nine-year absence from our screens - but was it any good?
The format has remained largely the same, with members of the public announcing which singer they will be impersonating before disappearing into a cloud of smoke and emerging transformed into that singer.
However, the revamped Stars In Their Eyes saw a more comedic tone employed by new host Harry Hill, who follows in the footsteps of previous hosts Leslie Crowther, Matthew Kelly and Cat Deeley.
The new version of the show sparked a great deal of discussion on Twitter, with the majority of commenters expressing their disappointment:
Has a tv show ever been cancelled half way through its first episode before? just wondering..... #starsintheireyes

Matthew Kelly will make a cameo appearance in tonight's (January 10) series opener of Harry Hill's Stars in Their Eyes.
Kelly, who fronted the singing show from 1993 to 2002, will be replaced by Harry Hill as presenter.
The opening sketch will pay homage to the veteran TV host and introduce Hill in his new role.
Kelly will be seen arriving at the studio wearing a brightly coloured suit, before heading into the dressing room marked 'Host: Stars In Their Eyes'.
Hill then exits the dressing room wearing the same oversized suit.

One of my happiest memories of TV as a child was the Stars In Their Eyes grand final night. The Matthew Kelly years of the show may look rather quaint in an era of spinning chairs, dancing celebrities and X Factor shoutiness, but it was actually ahead of its time as an entertainment format.
From turning Reg the butcher and Barbara from accounts into stars for five minutes, to public phone votes for the winner, it was in many ways a proto-Pop Idol and X Factor.
The key difference between Stars In Their Eyes and what followed was the complete absence of cynicism or profiteering. It probably helped Basil from Basingstoke raise a few more quid with his George Formby covers act, but there was never any pretense that the show would be life-changing.

Harry Hill would feel ''creepy'' if he dressed up in drag. The 50-year-old TV personality - who is hosting the new series of 'Stars In Their Eyes' - will be impersonating different celebrities on the show when it returns this weekend but fears he is too old to dress as female stars. He told The Sun newspaper: ''I'm not going to be any female singers. I'm too old for drag now. I look a bit creepy.'' Speaking about how closely the remake will follow the format of the original show, he added: ''It's a mix between celebrating 'Stars In Their Eyes'...

What better way to celebrate the life of one of the world's greatest ever singers? A man who sold over 150 million records and won eleven Grammy Awards?
Scoop up some rejected singers from The Voice UK, gather some rejected props from The Voice UK and assemble some judges not good enough to be rejected from The Voice UK. Then put it on BBC One.
Spread all over last Saturday night like tar, Frank Sinatra: Our Way featured seven 'talented but unknown music acts from across the UK' who were competing to win a slot to perform at the singer's centenary concert later this year.
Presented by Alexander Armstrong and Rochelle Humes, who were both doing the best with what scraps they had, we were confronted with a judging panel that comprised of Rufus Hound, Mica Paris, Dave Stewart and Leo Green. And they had absolutely no sway at all.

ITV's Your Face Sounds Familiar will not be returning for a second series.
The entertainment show, presented by Paddy McGuinness and Alesha Dixon, involved six celebrities impersonating iconic singers in a bid to win money for their chosen charity.

Harry Hill is to make his acting debut as Professor Branestawm in a BBC family comedy.
The 49-year-old comedian, who will be hosting a brand new version of ITV's Stars in Their Eyes next year, will play the absent-minded inventor in a family film adaptation of Norman Hunter's classic children's books by actor and author Charlie Higson.
The series of adventures see Professor Branestawm's eccentric creations causing chaos and mayhem in their wake, with disaster usually averted by his highly-strung housekeeper Mrs Flittersnoop and his loyal yet dim best friend Colonel Dedshott of the Catapult Cavaliers.

To celebrate, we caught up with Stephen for a natter about rubbish contestants, trying not to follow in the footsteps of previous host Nick Weir, and why we're about to see a worthy successor to the infamous snake charmer rudeness...
Were you glad to get back to Catchphrase for a second series?
"Yes, I must say I was really, really pleased. It doesn't feel like going to work. With Catchphrase, there is something about it where as soon as you go back into the studio it just feels right. We have a couple of specials in this series, like a Mother's Day special, which is hilarious. It has David Walliams and...

When our very own esteemed Reviews Editor, Stefan Pape, published his review of Frozen on the site, I felt compelled to argue a few of the finer points with him afterwards on Twitter. It wasn’t about anything drastic – I just felt his 4-star review was missing a star – but one of the subjects we differed on slightly was that of the songs. He felt they were a little “hit or miss,” while I was firmly of the opinion that there are way more hits than misses… and then the opportunity to review the soundtrack arose, and I just couldn’t resist the chance to set the record straight.
There are two versions of the Frozen soundtrack available, a standard 32-track edition, and a Deluxe Edition that comes with an extra 27 tracks. We got our hands on a copy of the standard edition for review, and of the 32 tracks, 10 are songs,...

The X Factor star Tamera Foster has brushed off comparisons to Beyoncé.
The 16-year-old took on Beyoncé's 'Listen' during tonight's Movie Week show, but judge Gary Barlow suggested that it felt like she was impersonating the popstar. Barlow also said that the performance would best belong on Stars In Their Eyes.
> X Factor Movie Week: Our 5 favourite performances
Speaking on The Xtra Factor later, Foster explained that she wasn't upset by Barlow's comments.
"I kind of expected to be compared to Beyoncé," she said. "No, I didn't mind that."
Foster, who said she was "very, very happy" with her performance, explained that she had been hoping to perform the song during the live shows.
"I did give my all in it - I'm happy," she said. "The song, like, captivated me. I think there's a difference when I'm in rehearsals to when I'm in performance mode, because then you've got the adrenaline,...

We're already into our third week of X Factor live shows, so it's time to inject a little bit of Hollywood glamour into proceedings - enter Movie Week! This has always been a good one for Louis Walsh's rulebook (or, alternatively, Louis Walsh's bizarre choice of a song from Gummo) so let's hope for some more drama tonight.
With Miss Dynamix back in the mix, Abi Alton (hopefully) not too injured after last week's fall and Nicole Scherzinger suitably filled up with Greggs sausage rolls, who knows what could be happening?
Well, Digital Spy will be here to bring you all the action, so join us when the show starts at 8pm on ITV to find out what's going down as Hollywood meets X Factor. And make sure you to get in on the fun by leaving your comments below and on our Twitter page...

Stephen Mulhern has told Digital Spy that he wants to bring back Grange Hill and star in it as a teacher.
The Britain's Got More Talent host, who fronted a successful Catchphrase revival on ITV, picked the BBC school drama, Stars in Their Eyes and a new version of prank show Beadle's About as classic light entertainment formats he wants to see again.
"Stars in Their Eyes, I don't know why, it just had a bit of magic about it," he said. "Beadle's About... Mulhern's About, it's a new show! No, Beadle's About I thought was just genius."
He continued: "Grange Hill, I'd bring that back. I'd love to star in it. There's so many."
Mulhern also confessed that he is somewhat worried about the lack of buzz around his new project, breakfast show Sunday Side Up.
"My real hope for the show is that it gets a following and...

It’s always fascinating to see a famous performer in their more formative years. For Ricky Gervais, his formative years were rather brief, as he had his mainstream television debut in 1999. That’s two years before “The Office” first aired on the BBC, when his career subsequently exploded. Nevertheless, it’s very interesting to see where the comedian got his start. Gervais got his first big break in a one-off for Channel 4’s “Comedy Lab,” which is a program that showcases comedy pilots. Gervais’ show, co-written with Stephen Merchant, was called “Golden Years” and, thankfully for us, the entire episode is available online.Dangerous Minds recently unearthed the little-seen pilot whose style is not that far off from what Merchant/Gervais would later do with “The Office.” Gervais’ character is Clive Meadows, an owner of a video rental chain that’s obsessed with David Bowie and wants to impersonate...

'Your Face Sounds Familiar' star Bobby Davro injured his leg trying to mimic Sir Mick Jagger. The comedian - who is one of six celebrities competing for charity on ITV's new 'Stars in Their Eyes'-esque reality competition - is set to dress up as the Rolling Stones frontman for the second episode on Saturday (06.07.13), however, his performance is now at risk after straining his leg while trying to impersonate the rock legend's famous strut in rehearsals. Emmerdale star Natalie Anderson has revealed that she is glad she didn't get any further after she auditioned for Pop Idol in 2001.
Anderson, who plays Alicia Metcalfe in the soap, got down to the last 50 but missed out on making it into the final 10, during the series that saw Will Young crowned the winner.
Anderson said to The Mirror: "I wasn't confident enough. I was in the final 50 and got beaten to the final 10 by Will Young - which isn't bad going.
"I wasn't ready for it. He was much more grounded. I was still at drama school and the idea that I could be in the papers the next day was disturbing. I found it stressful."
Anderson will be taking part in ITV's new show Your Face Sounds Familiar, which launches this weekend.
The show is similar to Stars in Their Eyes and will see the celebrity contestants have to imitate famous singers.

Paddy McGuinness hosting, a random duo of judges (Emma Bunton and Julian Clary) and a bunch of hapless celebrities willing to utterly humiliate themselves for our entertainment. We can only possibly be talking about one thing - a new ITV Saturday night entertainment show
Your Face Sounds Familiar launches this weekend on ITV and the mash-up of cheap D-listers and musical 'comedy' looks likely to create a stir.
Hosted by Paddy McGuinness and Alesha Dixon, the show is essentially the classic '90s Saturday night feel-good series Stars in Their Eyes, re-jigged with a group of eager and not particularly busy celebrities replacing Joe Public.
Bobby Davro, Heather off EastEnders, that bloke from This Morning. A-listers they may not be, but they are all willing to take on the challenge of performing as a different musical act every Saturday with the aim of winning money for their charity.

Alesha Dixon is set to host ITV's 'Your Face Sounds Familiar'. The 'Britain's Got Talent' judge will front a new Saturday night primetime programme, which is thought to be similar to popular 1990s TV talent show 'Stars in Their Eyes' - which saw contestants impersonate famous singers - but it will feature celebrities dressing up as popstars. The 34-year-old star is ''thrilled'' with landing her own show, which will boast a judging panel that includes 'Celebrity Big Brother' winner Julian Clary and Spice Girl Emma Bunton. 'Your Face Sounds Familiar' comes from Endemol, the production company behind 'Big Brother', and will feature...

ABC has ordered a new reality competition called "Sing Your Face Off," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on an international concept called "Your Face Sounds Familiar" from Endemol, the six-episode contest will showcase five celebrities who are tasked with impersonating iconic singers, utilizing hours of makeup, choreographers and vocal coaches to perfect the transformation.
The competition will reportedly be judged not just on the celebrities' singing and dancing skills, but also how well they adopt their chosen musician's mannerisms, tone of voice and way of walking. THR reports that the participating talent will take on the identities of a number of different singers over the course of the series, with prizes yet to be determined.
Deadline reports that contestants will sometimes be required to impersonate someone much older or younger than them, or someone of a different gender. The celebrity contestants have yet to be cast, and there will...

Cleo Higgins leads the third round of blind auditions in tonight's episode of The Voice UK.
Formerly the lead singer of pop act Cleopatra and now a mum of two and trained chef, Higgins is seen hoping to relaunch her musical career.
"I am so tired of people recognising me for my history and not hearing what I'm capable of doing as a performer now," says the 30-year-old.
Barry James Thomas - the 49-year-old uncle of Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas and Emmerdale's Adam Thomas - also does his best to send the coaches spinning.
Singing Etta James classic 'Something's Got A Hold On Me', 18-year-old self-confessed "small town girl" Elise Evans is another contestant hoping for a shot at stardom.
She is joined by fellow teenage auditionees Conor Scott - an 18-year-old Belfast busker - "ultimate Jessie J super-fan" Lem Knights and 19-year-old Mitchel Emms, who once...
