Beyoncé’s new album, Cowboy Carter, is out in the wild. In a press release, Beyoncé provided extensive insight into the making of the album and its variety of influences. Plus, read our review the album here.
Each Song Was Inspired by a Western Film
Notably, each song is its own version of a reimagined Western film, including Michael Matthews’ Five Fingers For Marseilles; James Bridges’ Urban Cowboy; Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight; Clint Eastwood’s Space Cowboys; Jeymes Samuel’s The Harder They Fall; and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Often times, they films were playing on a screen during the recording process.
Additionally, some aspects of the album’s percussion were inspired by the Coen Brothers’ ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?.
Beyoncé also found inspiration in traditional country, R&b, blues, zydeco, and Black folk music, as well as from her childhood trips to the Houston Rodeo.

Beyoncé looked to fellow cultural titans to lasso inspiration for her new album “Cowboy Carter.”
The Grammy winner and “Dreamgirls” actress, who recently appeared in theaters with her “Renaissance” concert film, shared that she watched features such as Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight” to craft her own “character” behind her debut country album.
“This album took over five years,” Beyoncé said in an official press release. “It’s been really great to have the time and the grace to be able to take my time with it. I was initially going to put ‘Cowboy Carter’ out first [before ‘Renaissance’], but with the pandemic, there was too much heaviness in the world. We wanted to dance. We deserved to dance. But I had to trust God’s timing.”
That timing also encompassed the release of additional features that influenced Beyoncé’s vision for the album,...

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter was created over the past five years. During that span of time, the world was upended by a global pandemic and social strife; Martin Scorsese grappled with the blood on the hands of American history with Killers of the Flower Moon; and Beyoncé brought diamonds and disco to the dance floor on Renaissance. All these vastly different occurrences are components that informed the creation, imagery, and release of Beyoncé’s first-ever country album.

Taylor Swift might have been (mostly) all anyone could talk about for this year's Super Bowl, but the new trailer for David Leitch's The Fall Guy, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt certainly wasn't about to… I'm sorry, we're being told there is a Swiftie joke in here. But it works! Check out the new trailer:
Yes, with this latest promo for the action comedy promising everything you could wish for (Burritos! Space Cowboys! Twisted Metal! Cardio?) there is yet another chance for Gosling to undercut his brooding macho image with some emotion. Wonder if they played "I'm Just Ken" on set?
As for the film, which channels the 1980s Lee Majors TV series for a story of Gosling's stuntman roped in to investigate when the star he usually doubles for goes missing – putting the movie being directed by old flame Emily Blunt at risk – it looks like a whole lot of fun,...

Courtney B. Vance has joined the cast of Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch as Cobra Bubbles, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Disney declined to comment.
Vance joins previously announced castmembers Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani and Kahiau Machado as David Kawena. Zach Galifianakis joined the cast in February. Stitch, naturally, will be a CG confection. Dean Fleischer Camp, the filmmaker behind indie darling and best animated feature Oscar nominee Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is directing the remake that is intended to be a major release on Disney+.
The Hawaii-centric story tells of the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who was genetically engineered to be a force of destruction. With nosy social workers and pursuing aliens banging on the door, the two bond over a shared sense of family and win the day.

“Yellowstone,” “Mayor of Kingstown,” “1883” — so far, Taylor Sheridan’s steadily expanding TV universe has hewed closely to the writer-director’s breakthrough hit. And why not? Kevin Costner’s soapy family saga is a ratings juggernaut, its success credited to a setting in what’s left of America’s wild west, where the old ways of doing things clash with new ideas of right and wrong. A prequel, “1883,” ditches any pretense by abandoning the present to live fully in the past. Surrounding the Duttons’ actual ancestors are colonizers and covered wagons, shootouts and scenic vistas. If Costner represents the last of the cowboys, then Sam Elliott is their paragon at the peak of their prevalence. Even “Mayor of Kingstown,” which has no narrative ties to “Yellowstone,” is told like a modern Western with a heavy emphasis on family, reform, and machismo. Jeremy Renner may not wear a Stetson, but...

Paul Weitz’s “Moving On” boasts a legendary ensemble that includes Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Malcolm McDowell and Richard Roundtree. It’s always possible for such an illustrious cast to simultaneously elicit excitement and dread, though. Just ask anyone who has endured “Queen Bees,” “Poms,” “Book Club,” “Last Vegas” or “Space Cowboys.”
Good news: “Moving On” doesn’t just aim for warm and pleasant. The film is wickedly droll and shockingly riveting – the operative word being “shockingly.” The element of surprise abounds and is more integral to the plot here than in, say, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” The less you know, the better because the film defies expectations in the best way possible. With that said, and somewhat heedless of our own advice, this review regrettably must proceed to tell you more. But we won’t spoil anything beyond what’s in the programming notes of the Toronto International Film Festival,...

"Auteur" is one of those words that get thrown around a lot, yet its meaning seems to vary depending on who you ask. It's a term that is most often afforded to directors whose work is held in high regard, but it can just as easily be applied to a filmmaker whose movies are rarely the bee's knees in the eyes of critics. This issue has even led to the coining of the somewhat polarizing phrase "Vulgar Auteurism" as a way for critics to avoid having to lump the Martin Scorseses of the world in with the likes of Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich.
In truth, you could fairly describe all three of those directors as being "auteurs." The basic idea dates back to at least 1954 when François Truffaut coined the term "La Politique des Auteurs" or "The Policy of the Authors." Even then, Truffaut was building on the writing of critics like André Bazin,...

On paper, Clint Eastwood seems to have enjoyed a well plotted out career. In the early 1960s, he made himself known to American television viewers via his role as Rowdy Yates on "Rawhide." From there, he segued to the newfangled Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone as the laconic "Man with No Name" in the "Dollars Trilogy." As conventional Westerns faded out of fashion, Eastwood made violent, anti-mythic oaters like "Hang 'Em High" and "The Outlaw Josey Wales," while adopting the persona of Dirty Harry Callahan in a series of cop flicks that both capitalized on and tweaked the country's law-and-order fervor. Then, after a few stumbles in the late 1980s, Eastwood went full-on revisionist with "Unforgiven," at which point he became a perennial Oscar darling.
Amazingly, Eastwood is still plugging away at 92. That kind of career longevity isn't just rare, it's just about unprecedented. Only Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira,...

"Space Cowboys" plays against the conventions of usual astronaut-themed films of its time. Instead of a massive asteroid, the movie's heroes have to dismantle a Soviet satellite (although it's equipped with six nuclear missiles that pose a threat to mankind.) And in lieu of muscular, spry action heroes, there is a quartet of elder actors: Clint Eastwood (who also serves as director/producer on "Space Cowboys"), Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland (who's also appeared in other space-themed films like Roland Emmerich's "Moonfall"), and James Garner. In addition to staving off a potential nuclear apocalypse, the four have to deal with the specter of Death creeping up on...

Captain Pike is riding a horse. Why is he riding a horse? In a newly released promotional image for the upcoming series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, we see a cowboy in the saddle, looking out at the USS Enterprise as though he’s fixing to put a bumper sticker on it that says “my other starship is a horse.” If you’re only kind of into Trek, this may scan as weird. But, putting Captain Pike on a horse, is specifically, very classic. Here’s why this seemingly brazen image is actually layered with several Easter eggs. Giddyup!

The Netflix live-action adaptation of the beloved 90s anime series, Cowboy Bebop, has had a rocky start from the beginning.
Announced in 2017, with an impressive cast attached in 2019, the show experienced a shooting delay when star John Cho sustained an injury and then another when Covid hit.
Today, after a mixed reception from audiences to the ten-episode first season released on November 19, Netflix announced that a second season will not happen.
In case you missed it at its launch, Netflix describes the series as follows:
"Cowboy Bebop is an action-packed space Western about three bounty hunters, aka 'cowboys,' all trying to outrun the past.
"As different as they are deadly, Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) form a scrappy, snarky crew ready to hunt down the solar system's most dangerous criminals — for the right price.

Lennie Niehaus, who went from Stan Kenton sideman to Clint Eastwood’s movie composer during a nearly 60-year career in music, died Thursday at his daughter’s home in Redlands, Calif. He was 90.
Niehaus’s two dozen films for Eastwood include original scores for the best picture-winning Western “Unforgiven,” the Charlie Parker biopic “Bird” and the popular romantic drama “The Bridges of Madison County.”
The two met in 1953 at California’s Fort Ord, when the two were in the Army during the Korean Conflict. “I used to play jazz jobs at one of the beer clubs on the base, and Clint was tending bar,” Niehaus wrote in an essay about the actor-director for his 1996 American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. “I used to go off post and play in a little jazz club in nearby Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoons, and he would be there.”

HBO Max has a major job on its hands to justify its approximately $15 a month subscription fee, especially given the strong competition out there from established names like Netflix and Amazon Prime. Disney Plus faced a similar challenge last year in arriving onto an already-saturated streaming marketplace, but at least had the advantage of major series like The Mandalorian to promote. While HBO Max will eventually be home to the Snyder cut of Justice League, and has some originals for its first week of availability, the big draw right now is its enormous back-catalogue of movies.
Given the various corporate elements that are going into HBO Max, including the Warner Bros. library, owners AT&T will be hoping that the combination of brand recognition for HBO programming, and a deep bench of movies, will convince people to add a new subscription to their list. To this end, HBO Max have added 122 films today,...

Welcome to the HBO Max era! WarnerMedia’s streaming giant arrived on May 27 and is absolutely bursting with Warner movies, TV shows, and other titles. But time waits for no man or streaming service and each new month HBO Max will be expected to bring new content to the table. Things get started in June 2020 with the first batch of HBO Max new releases.
To be clear, the majority of the original series coming to HBO Max actually belongs to HBO. Shows like I May Destroy You (June 7), Perry Mason (June 21), and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark (June 28) all belong to HBO…which now just happens to be a part of HBO Max. Confusing stuff, we know, but rest assured that if you have HBO Max you’ll get these shows…and if you only have HBO, you can go ahead and just get HBO Max for the same price anyway.

Six years have passed since fans said goodbye to Jesse Pinkman, but “El Camino: A ‘Breaking Bad’ Movie” has come knocking at the door.
“It was a family reunion of sorts. It was revisiting an old, dear, close friend of mine with zipping on Jesse Pinkman again. It was odd but very familiar,” star Aaron Paul told Variety at the premiere at the Regency Village Theatre on Monday.
Creator Vince Gilligan originally planned for AMC’s “Breaking Bad” to be a self-contained story, but he always wondered where Jesse ended up after the finale. The last time viewers saw him, Jesse was escaping the drug lab where he had been chained up and forced to cook crystal meth as a prisoner of the Aryan Brotherhood. “El Camino” picks up directly after the finale and sees Jesse hunted by the police.

Brad Pitt’s saga is the latest sci-fi film to fall back on stereotypes of heroic men and emotional women
Brad Pitt has not minced his words while talking about his new space epic Ad Astra, in which he plays a stoic, closed-off astronaut with daddy issues. “What we were really digging at … was this definition of masculinity,” he recently stated, and lamented “having grown up in an era where we were taught to be strong, not show weakness, don’t be disrespected”. That is bang on-message with #MeToo Hollywood, but Ad Astra also brings home how gendered the space film has always been.
Factually minded films from this genre – The Right Stuff, Apollo 13, First Man – have had little choice but to reflect the male-dominated reality, but men have also dominated the more far-fetched solo missions and team efforts such as 2001 or Space Cowboys. The latter hit the nail on the head.

Even though I’ve heard many good things about Jaipur over the years, the game has always eluded me. I play board games at many player counts and two player (with just my wife) is certainly one of them, but we tend not to focus on games designed for two players specifically. Jaipur is strictly a two player game, and so because I haven’t ever owned a copy and it’s unlikely to be produced at a games night (where the focus for warm up games tends to be on high player counts) I’ve simply never crossed paths with it.
Now, thanks to a reprint from Space Cowboys, I’ve finally got my hands on a copy of Jaipur, and my wife and I have been playing it constantly ever since. The first thing that I should say is that it lives up to the hype in every possible way,...

Bradley Cooper had lofty sonic ambitions for his directorial debut, “A Star is Born.” In fact, sound editor Alan Robert Murray reveals that the first-time filmmaker had envisioned “four soundscapes that he wanted to incorporate into the movie” — no pressure. Watch our exclusive video interview with Murray above.

In addition to directing, Cooper stars in “Star” as Jackson Maine, a fading musician who helps propel a young singer, Ally (Lady Gaga), to stardom. For the film’s many concert sequences, Cooper and Murray wanted “everybody to feel like you were there.” And they contrasted those with more personal sequences that were “ratcheted down.” On top of that, they needed to convey Jackson’s “struggle with tinnitus” as well as transitions from “his loss of hearing” back to “reality.”

Unsurprisingly, the number-one film in America over the weekend of December 14-16 was the animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” That makes this the 13th weekend of 2018 with a Marvel Comics adaptation on top — yes, Marvel movies have led the box office for a full quarter of the calendar. What’s more, “Spider-Verse” made history, and it looks like it could have long legs heading into the holiday season.
“Spider-Verse” opened with $35.4 million, which may not sound like a lot relative to other Marvel movies, but this version is independent of the gargantuan Marvel Cinematic Universe that has fueled Hollywood for the last decade, and it follows a different protagonist: Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore).

Sony-Marvel’s latest output is launching to $42 million from 3,813 North American locations in its debut, though other more conservative estimates place that number at $35.5 million. The animated superhero story picked up $12.6 million on Friday, easily leading the pack for the weekend.
The film, which takes place in the shared “Spider-Verse,” follows a Brooklyn youth (Shameik Moore) who becomes one of many Spider-Men that must battle the villain Kingpin. “Spider-Verse” also features the voices of Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Lily Tomlin, Luna Lauren Velez, Zoë Kravitz, John Mulaney, Kimiko Glenn with Nicolas Cage, Kathryn Hahn and Liev Schreiber. From Warner Bros. Pictures, Imperative Entertainment and Bron Creative comes Clint Eastwood’s newest feature film, the drama The Mule.

Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. He does well—so well, in fact, that his cargo increases exponentially, and Earl is assigned a handler. But he isn’t the only one keeping tabs on Earl; the mysterious new drug mule has also...

Opening box office metrics point to Sony Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse —a fresh take on the Marvel superhero where anyone can wear the mask told in a novel cartoon style– in the neighborhood of $30M-$35M, which would be a great start in this sleepy pre-Christmas marketplace.
Those who deal in box office projections are holding their hands up, emphasizing the leg-out factor of the movie, and how hard it is to make moviegoing a priority at this point in time during the holiday season. Interest is strong among families, African American and Hispanic demos. However, there’s an immense amount of heat surrounding this Phil Lord-scripted animated feature, which he produced with his creative partner Christopher Miller, as well as Avi Arad, Amy Pascal, and Christina Steinberg, so no one will be surprised if this movie overindexes. Sony has been screening this movie for the last month,...

Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story fulfills advertised requirements with a workman’s attitude. You’ll meet young Han Solo, and it’s most certainly a Star Wars movie. That’s made abundantly clear by every wink-wink, nudge-nudge towards the future escapades of Lucasfilm’s famously roguish smuggler. But past that generic withstanding? You won’t find much. Mainly because Howard’s murky and uninteresting visual “spectacle” suffers the unfortunate fate of following Rian Johnson’s cosmically picturesque The Last Jedi. It’s not even fair to compare the two on cinematic appeal, but such is the precarious position Star Wars has stuck viewers in.

William Shatner is boldly going where only so many actors have gone before: Variety reports the Star Trek stalwart has just boarded an indie rom-com called Senior Moment. In what sounds like an homage to both Top Gun and Space Cowboys, Shatner will play a retired Navy pilot who also happened to test aircraft for Nasa. But retirement can’t clip this maverick’s wings, as he zips around town in a little hot rod (hang on, we’re not at the rom-com part yet.) The film’s being directed by Giorgio Serafini, the helmer of such, um, lighthearted fare as Game Of Death starring Wesley Snipes and the forthcoming The Executioners. We assume there’s a meet-cute nestled somewhere in all that bloody revenge, making Serafini very much the right guy to direct a movie about a twilight-years romance.

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Clint Eastwood as director.
Clint Eastwood became an american film star in the 1960’s thanks to his acting performances in a number of western films. As he began to branch out with new roles in front of the camera, he sought out to have more creative input into the types of film projects that he would be involved in. One way he was able to accomplish this was by creating his own production company which eventually allowed him to work behind the camera as director. His first film as director was 1971’s Play Misty For Me, which was well received by critics and did well at the box office. HIs second film as director was High Plains Drifter (1973), in which he also starred.
