Casting for Netflix’s reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge was a unique challenge: finding 456 diverse and international lead characters.
Casting director Erika Dobrin described the gargantuan task by saying, “I don’t think that’s ever quite been done before on the scale it was done here.”
The Netflix series, based on the streaming’s mega-hit Korean survival drama Squid Game, saw 456 contestants compete for a massive $4.56 million prize through a series of challenges. These ranged from the infamous “Red Light Green Light” from the 2021 drama, in which contestants had to avoid moving while in the eyeline of a horrifying giant doll, to new ones based on children’s games such as Battleship.

Note: This post contains spoilers for "The Wire."
Is "The Wire" still one of the greatest TV shows of all time? David Simon's sprawling, complex portrait of Baltimore has appeared on multiple "best of" lists over the years, popping up near the top of masterpiece-filled rankings from outlets like Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Empire, and more. The HBO series, which really couldn't have worked before that channel's dominance in early 2000s, currently ranks sixth-highest of all time on IMDb, and despite never winning an Emmy, it's earned a Peabody, DGA and WGA awards, and a spot on the American Film Institute's Television Programs of The Year list three different times.
"The Wire" is no doubt a work of storytelling genius, and much of its tremendous effect is cumulative. The series starts at the street level of Maryland's biggest city, examining the effects of drugs and gang life before refocusing...

Hulu’s “We Were the Lucky Ones” is primed for a big night at this year’s Emmys. Adapted from the Georgia Hunter‘s 2017 book of the same name, the limited series follows the Kurcs, a Polish Jewish family who were split apart during World War II: some members go into hiding and others are forced into concentration camps. The series, brutal and dark, follows the family’s attempts to reunite after the war ends. It’s a tough watch but a vital one and the series, created by Erica Lipez, is intelligent in its portrayal of such hard subject matter, as noted by critics.
Aramide Tinubu (Variety) stated: “Devastating, and profoundly moving, ‘We Were the Lucky Ones’ illustrates the scope of World War II, the inhumanity of others and the anguish of disconnection and loss.”
Matthew Gilbert (Boston Globe) observed: “Yes, the miniseries is challenging, and steeped in heartbreak,...

New data from Ampere Analysis shows how much HBO titles like ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Insecure’ have risen in popularity since becoming available on Netflix.
It’s been nearly a year since reports first surfaced that Warner Bros. Discovery was in talks with Netflix to send some HBO original titles to stream on that platform, while at the same time remaining on Wbd’s platform Max. At the time the move was considered somewhat controversial, as the prevailing wisdom at the time held that media companies should keep their prized content in order to draw viewers to their own services. But months after the licensing deal between HBO and Netflix became official, new data from Ampere Analysis shows that many HBO shows doubled in popularity after being sent to stream on Netflix.
“Ballers” saw the biggest jump in relative popularity, quadrupling its score in the month after its Netflix premiere.

Masters of the Air is the third World War II miniseries from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, following Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Goetzman said Spielberg’s father had been pushing them to do the series about WWII pilots since their first.
“We had an obligation to Steven’s father,” Goetzman said at Contenders TV. “He was in the Army Air Force. He’d seen Band and The Pacific and say to Steven, ‘Those are great. When are you going to do the pilots? When are you going to do Europe? If we ever did another one that would be it.’ Then Don Miller’s book came along.”

It’s the rare actor has an opportunity to portray a real-life World War II hero and a notorious villain of American history in the space of just a few months, but the Irish-born Anthony Boyle is that guy. He’s king of the prestigious limited series in 2024 in a pair of big-ticket Apple TV+ projects. He was starring as Lieut. Harry Crosby of the Air Force’s famed Bloody Hundredth bomber group in the nine-part, $250 million epic “Masters of the Air” from the team that made “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. And a few months after completing filming on that in England, Boyle started work on the seven-part historical drama “Manhunt” portraying no less than John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. “I wanted to do kind of the opposite of what I’d just done,” Boyle says.

Benjamin Franklin’s diplomatic mission to France during the American Revolution is front and center in the Apple + TV series Franklin, and the series star and executive producer Michael Douglas hit the Croisette in Cannes to talk up the show ahead of its world premiere tonight at the Canneseries festival.
Douglas told a packed room of reporters at the Barriere Le Majestic hotel that Cannes was the natural choice to premiere the show that makes its global streaming premiere on Apple on Friday, April 12.
“This is where our project is based. The story is about Benjamin Franklin coming to France to save America,” said Douglas. “We spent 165 shooting days in Paris and around France in 2022, and not only is it based on Franklin coming here in 1776/7, but we filmed it all in France, and it’s the least we can do to come back here to premiere it.”
Douglas is Cannes regular.

When I saw the first black-and-white still of Andrew Scott in and as “Ripley,” I was sold — and I know I’m not alone.
The 47-year-old actor might seem like an unexpected choice to step into the shoes of Tom Ripley, but for anyone following his career, it could not have been a more perfect casting or welcome treat. From the very first moments, Steve Zaillian’s “Ripley” is one of those projects that hinges entirely upon its lead actor, a vehicle for Mr. Ripley’s talents that buoys sharp direction, artistic choices, and lush cinematography in its wake.
As for casting the man last seen on TV as Hot Priest in the role of a known sociopath (though Scott and Zaillian dislike labeling their antihero), we must turn to Tumblr. With Instagram in its infancy and TikTok still years away, Twitter and Tumblr were the arenas for Andrew Scott...

John Orloff, the co-creator of Apple TV+ miniseries Masters of the Air, has signed with UTA for representation in all areas.
The move comes after Orloff signed with Verve for representation in January, the same month his high profile and high priced war drama launched. However, in February, the agency became embroiled in an internal battle amongst partners, resulting in the ousting of founding partner Bill Weinstein. Several lit clients were caught up in the churn. Brian K. Vaughan, the comics author and screenwriter, also switched agencies and signed with UTA in March.
Orloff adapted the acclaimed memoir by Mariane Pearl, A Mighty Heart, into a 2007 drama that starred Angelina Jolie and counted Brad Pitt as among its producers. He earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for best first screenplay for his script.
Orloff also co-wrote the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s animated 2010 feature Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,...

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks can do no wrong when it comes to media revolving around WWII. Three years after collaborating on one of the best WWII films, Saving Private Ryan, the duo once again joined forces for one of the best WWII series with 2001’s Band of Brothers. The next two decades saw Spielberg and Hanks produce two more companion series to the 2001 acclaimed show, with the recent entry being Masters of the Air.
While not as acclaimed as the original and The Pacific, the 2024 Apple TV+ mini-series excels with its realistic midair combat and perfectly sows the seeds for a potential sequel.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we break down the loaded limited series field.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’ve reached what is maybe my favorite Emmys category of the year. Peak TV is dead and Mass TV is arguably on the ropes, but you wouldn’t know it from the absolutely stacked limited series and TV movie roster. What a time to be alive? There are multiple series here that I’m excited about, too many, in fact, to fit into the five slots for Best Limited Series. But right now I feel pretty good about the shows I do have represented. First in my heart and on my predictions list is “Shōgun,” our favorite “Succession” prequel and just a complete smash. Great crafts, beautiful crafts,...

Executive producers Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have reunited for a third historical mini-series, this time taking to the skies with Apple TV+’s “Masters of the Air.” The series follows the members of the 100th Bomb Group, a Boeing B-17 heavy bomber unit that operated in the Air Force during WWII. This isn’t Hanks and Spielberg’s first war-time series, however. They previously executive produced “The Pacific,” which charted the US Marine Corps’ actions in the Pacific Theater of Operations. Before that, they created “Band of Brothers,” which dramatized the story of the Easy Company of the US Army, who went on a mission in Europe during WWII.

For the 15th anniversary of the "Battlestar Galactica" finale, I spoke with several of the show's writers and actors for an inside look at how it reached that conclusion. One of them was David Eick, the series' co-creator (with Ronald D. Moore). I asked the man who resurrected "Galactica" out of its campy 1970s roots why attempts to keep the franchise going faltered.
You see, "Battlestar" hadn't even been finished a year when a prequel spin-off debuted: "Caprica," an ensemble drama set more than 50 years before the series on the eponymous planet (one of the 12 colonies razed by the robotic Cylons at the outset of "Battlestar Galactica"). The series debuted in January 2010 and wrapped that November after a single, 19-episode first season -- its planned multi-year run aborted by low ratings.
Next, Eick and co. pivoted with "Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome," a second prequel (but after "Caprica") set during the first human/Cylon war.

Judd Apatow was not happy with Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision last year to license a handful of HBO original series to Netflix. Many shows including Insecure, Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under, and Ballers were licensed to the streaming platform. Apatow described this move as scary because Netflix could buy around older shows and stream them to their audience, rather than investing millions on new shows. However, X-Men writer Zack Stentz couldn’t agree with Apatow’s views.

Judd Apatow spoke to Vulture in a recent interview about the current state of television, including why the trend of rewatching older series and licensing pacts between streamers is “scary.”
“I’m of two minds,” Apatow said. “There’s a part of me that’s an audience member: I’ll go back and rewatch ‘Deadwood’ or ‘NYPD Blue’ or any of the David Milch shows. I understand why people like the comfort food of television. But it’s a scary thing as a creator of television, because of all the streamers going, ‘Wait a second. We don’t need to spend $200 million on a new show. We can just bring back “Barnaby Jones.”‘ They’re going to do it, then you’ll get fewer new shows.”
The “This Is 40” writer-director continued, “They realize, Oh wait, Netflix can just buy shows from HBO, and I would assume they’re cheaper than making new ones.

The Apple TV+ limited series “Masters of the Air” is not exactly lacking in big-name star power. The World War II-era drama is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the powerhouse team behind two previous Emmy-winning series about America’s greatest generation: 2001’s “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And headlining the cast is Austin Butler, fresh off his Oscar-nominated star turn in “Elvis.”
However it is British actor Callum Turner who emerges as the real star of this ensemble drama, which just concluded its nine-episode run. As the free-spirited, occasionally volatile Major John “Bucky” Egan, Turner gives a haunting performance that both anchors “Masters of the Air” and allows the series to take flight.

Dark Sky Films releases The Glenarma Tapes on VOD and Digital on April 2, 2024.
Watch the new trailer below.
The film’s official synopsis: “In Spring 2020 five students and two faculty members from the Mid Ulster College of Art went missing in a forest on the north coast of Ireland. What happened on the day they disappeared has remained a mystery – until now. Over two years after the disappearance, a police operation on a house outside Belfast uncovered footage of the students’ final movements, as their journey into the forest saw them bear witness to something they should never have seen. The Glenarma Tapes present that footage to the public for the first time.”

There is something genuinely heartfelt about I’m ‘George Lucas’: A Connor Ratliff Story. Directed by Ryan Jacobi, the documentary tells the story of New York-based comedian Connor Ratliff and his long tenure playing “George Lucas” on The George Lucas Talk Show, an improvised, monthly comedy series designed as a late-night panel talk show in which real-life guests act as though they are conversing with the real George Lucas. The majority of performances were staged at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. The show also gained a brand-new, expanded audience over Zoom during the pandemic.
We follow Ratliff through his routines preparing for each show, explaining his process along the way. Collaborators like Griffin Newman (who plays “Watto”) and Patrick Cotnoir (who produces the show) try explaining Ratliff to the viewer. The overall explanation seems to be that there is not much of an explanation. He...

Steven Spielberg is one of the greatest film directors in the history of film and television. He has incredible acumen when it comes to filmmaking, and it is once again on display with his new show for Apple TV+, Masters of the Air.
The Jurassic Park director is a pioneer when it comes to the craft. Over the years, he has teamed up with various actors to produce some of the most memorable projects of all time, and one of them is Hollywood star Tom Hanks.
Suggested“There really is no justification for a budget this high”: Steven Spielberg’s Masters of the Air Budget Will Cook Your Goose
As the duo teamed up to conquer the air, the fact remains that Spielberg needed three separate series to master land, water, and air. On the other hand, Christopher Nolan needed just one film to achieve the same feat.

Masters of the Air was a labor of love for executive producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. The Apple TV+ series marks the third and final installment of the trio’s war drama miniseries, after Band of Brothers and The Pacific.
The series took three years to create and cost between $250 million and $300 million to produce, including a hefty $60 million in Covid compliance costs to film during the pandemic. The result was an epic nine-part series with 325 speaking parts and an amazing cast of up-and-coming actors.
“The best stories are from history,” said Goetzman during a discussion at the Deadline and Apple TV+ event Inside the Finale, joined by series cast members Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Rafferty Law, Josiah Cross, Nate Mann and Anthony Boyle. “Nonfiction is always more fascinating than fiction, and there’s no greater stories of human cost, triumph, passion, love… the biggest story of...

“Masters of the Air” soared to become Apple TV+’s highest-watched series launch ever when the first episodes dropped in January. While it might seem like a no-brainer that the team behind “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” — including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman — would hit it out of the park with a new World War II series, it wasn’t plain sailing, in large part thanks to Covid, which resulted in numerous delays. “It made the production very difficult,” Goetzman told Variety ahead of the series launch.
But also, in keeping with Apple TV+’s low-key publicity strategy, “Masters of the Air” somehow debuted on the streamer with minimal publicity, despite the fact that in the period between being pre- and post-production its key cast, including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan and Ncuti Gatwa had been propelled from jobbing actors to leading men.

When it comes to chronicling the bravery of the Greatest Generation during World War II, few if any can claim to have done it better than Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winning duo – whose first project about the Second World War, “Saving Private Ryan,” won Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar and landed Hanks a nomination for Best Actor. They have spent decades cataloging the sacrifice of American soldiers during WWII across multiple acclaimed television projects, including “Band of Brothers” (focused on Army paratroopers) and “The Pacific” (focused on Marines).
This year, Spielberg and Hanks are back again with “Masters of the Air,” the Apple TV+ limited series about the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force (also known as the Bloody Hundredth) who flew deadly and dangerous missions over Germany during World War II. Let us start by getting the obvious truth out. Masters of the Air, Apple TV’s magnum opus, has failed to reach the heights of HBO’s Band of Brothers or The Pacific, even though it comes from the same Steven Spielberg-Tom Hanks war epic stable. However, it is still a solidly made, very watchable series. The performances by the very talented cast are what make it soar high. Anthony Boyle, who plays Harry Crosby, is clearly the best performer of the show. Boyle is the breakout star of 2024, and he’s also starring in another of Apple TV’s historical epics, Manhunt. Austin Butler, who’s getting rave reviews for his performance in the blockbuster Dune: Part II, shines here as well, justifying his star status. And the ever-so-charming Callum Turner is fantastic as well, which of course has a lot to do with getting to play...

Times are grim for the men of Apple TV+‘s Masters of the Air, the latest chapter in the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks Band of Brothers franchise. As we reach “Part Nine,” the finale episode dropping Friday, March 15, we have your exclusive first look at the glimmer of hope on the horizon for prisoners of war Major John “Bucky” Egan (Callum Turner), Lieutenant Alexander Jefferson (Branden Cook), Lieutenant Robert H. Daniels (Ncuti Gatwa), Lieutenant Richard D. Macon (Josiah Cross), and more as the Americans approach the Nazi camp. (Credit: Apple TV+) In the sneak peek clip, above, the hope comes in the form of a bomber who flies down over the snowy encampment. “Macon, that’s a B-51,” Jefferson says, recognizing the sound of the engine before the plane comes into view. Could this be the answer to their escape? Only time will tell. As the clip plays out,...

A new study by hub Entertainment Research has found that about half of streaming users do not know which service has popular franchise shows — and licensing is to blame.
The licensing of TV series across several services — at once or at different times — has “created confusion as to where [shows] reside,” the report reads. For anyone without a (particularly good) voice-control remote, this is a problem.
Exactly 50 percent of hub’s (their stylization) survey respondents said they are “not sure” where “The Office” and “Friends” reside. “The Big Bang Theory” and “South Park” have a 55 percent/45 percent split, which means 55 percent are “not sure” where the shows stream and 45 percent at least wagered a guess — correctly or incorrectly.
A whopping 69 percent of survey-takers said they’re not sure where “Band of Brothers” is streaming. We get it, “Band of Brothers” is a 23-year-old premium-cable limited series. The...

When screenwriter John Orloff reunited with “Band of Brothers” producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg to adapt Donald L. Miller’s “Masters of the Air,” a non-fiction account of the Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group during World War II, he knew he wanted to give the audience a visceral sense of what it was like to there in the planes.
“We all know what infantry combat looks like,” Orloff told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “We’ve seen it over and over and over. We haven’t really seen what these air bomber combat missions were really like. Masters of the Air is the newest tribute to World War II veterans from Spielberg and Hanks. All of their projects on the subject, including Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and The Pacific, concentrate on different aspects of the Great War and make for good viewing companion pieces. As the new series follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, the review from our own Alex Maidy spoke highly of the show. He stated, “It is unlikely that any series will equal the acclaim that Band of Brothers achieved. Still, the blend of feature film directors and a cast of actors more than up to the task, Masters of the Air is a powerful companion to that HBO series and ranks slightly higher than The Pacific.

AppleTV may be betting a lot on their big budget, expansive follow-up to the acclaimed "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" miniseries with the WWII drama "Masters of the Air," but this week the war drama that is making waves is actually on Netflix — and it came out a decade ago.
As we've seen time and time again, Netflix can give underseen titles a second chance at finding a global audience — and maybe even lead to a continuation of the original story. This time it is the 2014 war drama "Fury," starring Brad Pitt and Shia Labeouf, that has audiences enthralled.
The film was written and directed by David Ayer and is without a doubt his best movie. "Fury" follows the crew of an American tank fighting their way through Germany during the final weeks of World War II, focusing on the heavy casualties suffered by American crews when engaging in combat against German tanks.

The runaway success of Suits on Netflix in 2023 gave the show the biggest year ever in the short history of streaming viewing measurement. It also headlined a banner year for library series (aka shows that ended their run years ago) across a number of platforms: The top 10 overall titles in Nielsen’s year-end rankings are all acquired shows, the first time that’s happened in the four years streaming rankings have been publicly available.
Viewers spent a lot more time on streaming platforms last year than the year before — streaming use rose by 21 percent, according to Nielsen — and licensed shows are responsible for a lot of that increased time. The top 10 original streaming series last year combined drove 133.6 billion minutes of viewing, accounting for about two-thirds of 2022’s top 10 original shows (198.3 billion minutes). And executive producers Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman paid homage to these young men who risked life and limb during the global conflict in their award-winning 2001 HBO series “Band of Brothers” and 2010’s “The Pacific.” And now they’ve taken to the not-so-friendly skies in their latest World War II series, Apple TV +’s “Masters of the Air.”
Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” is based on the 2007 book: “Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the War Against Nazi Germany,” the series starring Austin Butler focuses on the 8th Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group stationed in England. It was known as the “Bloody Hundredth” because of the high causalty rate.

The new Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” sees Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks reviving their acclaimed brand of World War II prestige television for the streaming era. The series, which was executive produced by both men and concludes a loose trilogy that began with “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” follows 10 young Air Force pilots operating a bomber outnumbered by German planes during the darkest days of the war.
The series — like the shows that preceded it — is defined by its blend of patriotism and brutality, honoring America’s veterans without sugarcoating what they endured. It’s a formula that Hanks and Spielberg have been perfecting since releasing “Saving Private Ryan” in 1998. And when it was time to begin filming, Hanks shared some wisdom with his cast about making effective war dramas.

When it comes to Apple TV+‘s Masters of the Air, the Steven Spielberg–Tom Hanks executive-produced project serves as a follow-up to HBO‘s Band of Brothers and The Pacific. A fact that never escaped its cast of young stars including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Raff Law, Nate Mann, and Anthony Boyle. The show following the 100th Bomb Group as they take to the air over Nazi Germany offers a closer look at the lives of its key players, juxtaposing the quiet drama they face on the ground with the intense combat missions they’re fronting thousands of feet off the ground. “Pressures always a good thing,” Law, who plays Sgt. Ken Lemmons. (Credit: Apple TV+) “Yeah, you want to carry this on,” Keoghan who portrays Lt. Curtis Biddick says of Masters of the Air‘s impact. ‘They’re massively successful, those two shows,” he says, acknowledging...

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Austin Butler plays Major Gale Cleven and Callum Turner plays Major John Egan, both real-life Usaaf pilots, and the series is based on the biographical book "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany," written by Donald L. Miller.
"Masters of the Air" was also co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, who previously oversaw the WWII drama shows "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" after collaborating on the 1998 film "Saving Private Ryan." These two men love harrowing tales of soldiers and seem hellbent on recreating the 1940s soldiers' experience on film as accurately as possible. Hanks also wrote and starred in the WWII thriller "Greyhound,...
