Before I start let me just say that this was part of the usual Saturday night drivel that gets put out on TV to pass as light entertainment - however at some points it rose above this to be genuinely funny.
Whenever this became a programme in the UK Danny Baker was the natural host. On his radio shows he would always get people to call in with weird stories or to do strange things over the phone. Many of these involve animals (i.e. "call in if your dog hangs by his mouth from branches of tall trees" etc). He was always able to bring a sense of child-like amazement to the fact that these animals would do these things. He's not everyone's cup of tea but he carried out proceedings with his tongue firmly in his cheek.
This was the programme's strength - yes it was stupid, almost insulting as a game show. But Baker knew this and let us in on the fact that he knew it but had decided to have a bit of fun anyway.
Unfortunately he was replaced by the horribly camp Dale Winton. Gone was the touch-in-cheek / wink at the camera style of presentation and in came Winton's camp game show. This killed the show in my opinion - it made it a terrible game show and nothing more. Just another bit of cheap unintelligent Saturday night schedule filler.
Baker told us "yes, it's silly but lets just have a bit of fun", Winton treated it like a proper game show and it was at this point that I think a lot of people realised what they were watching and switched off.
