Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, starring Idris Elba, is a moving account of the South African leader's life that doesn't flinch from the moral issues around political violence

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)
Director: Justin Chadwick
Entertainment grade: B+
History grade: B+
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years in apartheid South Africa. After his release, he became the country's first black president.
Casting
This biopic, based on the late Nelson Mandela's autobiography, has turned out to be almost spookily well-timed: its subject's death was announced during its London premiere on 6 December. The movie stars the British actor Idris Elba, who looks nothing like the man he portrays. Cinema has moved on since the days when casting agents thought Laurence Olivier could pass as Sudanese. Elba is at least of recent African origin, though his Ghanaian and...

Anyone who's seen the previews for "Pacific Rim" knows the main reason 10-year-olds and adults (who still act like one) will be lining up at movie theatres this weekend: they want to watch giant robots fighting giant monsters, preferably on a giant screen.
Set in the near future, skyscraper-sized alien creatures dubbed "kaiju" have begun traveling through an inter-dimensional portal located in a crack in the Pacific Ocean floor. So, to prevent them from playing Godzilla in major urban centres, mankind drops teams of fighter pilots into similarly sized robots called "jaegers" to go toe-to-toe with the beasts from beyond. With the jaegers winning battles but losing the war, General Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) recruits a former pilot Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) to help make humanity's last stand.
But there's more to Guillermo Del Toro's super-sized summer blockbuster than just its kaiju-on-jaeger action (there's also a lot of Idris Elba...

In terms of sheer wish fulfillment, perhaps no movie this year is as committed to appeasing our inner 10-year-olds as Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. A love letter to both the kaiju and mecha movies most closely associated with Japan, the director’s highly-anticipated monster grudge match is without question a slickly efficient, visually stunning product, though the woefully malnourished script fails to leave much of a lasting impression.
A portal has opened up in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, allowing giant Lovecraftian monsters called kaiju to rise up and attack Earth. The world’s countries put their differences aside, pooling their resources to build giant robots called Jaegers, which are scarcely capable of taking the beasts down. Led by sturdy military leader Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), the fate of humanity might just rest in a washed-up former Jaeger pilot, Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam), and his co-pilot,...

They're sleek. They're sexy. They're sssssorta famous? And they're ganging up for one last heist job in the new film Takers. But does the ensemble including Paul Walker, Idris Elba, Hayden Christensen, and T.I. actually have what it takes to lift this late-summer thriller to blockbuster heights? For the answer we turn to none other than Movieline's chief film critic Stephanie Zacharek. Verdict, please?...
