The creator of the Metal Mickey robot, Johnny Edward, also wrote the song 'Save Your Love', which was a massive Christmas number 1 for Renee & Renato in 1982. Edward also voiced and controlled MM in the studio.
21 of the 39 episodes were directed by Micky Dolenz (credited as Michael Dolenz) of the 1960s US pop group The Monkees.
A then relatively unknown Robbie Coltrane makes an appearance in one episode.
Despite snooty reviews in the UK press the show regularly managed to get audience figures of 12 million when transmitted in its early evening slot on ITV.
The location of the Metal Mickey robot was unknown for decades and it was assumed to have been either stolen or destroyed after the show was canceled. It wasn't until the death of its creator Johnny Edward in 2021 that the robot was discovered intact among his estate. The Metal Mickey robot was subsequently bought by a British newspaper ('The Sun') and now resides in their London offices.
