Sufjan Stevens has unveiled Javelin, his first collection of stripped-down, singer-songwriter songs in eight years. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify.
Stevens’ tenth solo album was self-produced and features contributions from The National guitarist Bryce Dessner, adrienne maree brown, Hannah Cohen, Mina Tindle, Megan Lui, and Nedelle Torrisi. Along with lead single “So You Are Tired” and our former Song of the Week “Will Anybody Ever Love Me?” the 10-track project includes a cover of the Neil Young deep cut “Thereʼs a World” from 1972’s Harvest.
In September, Stevens revealed on his website that he had been diagnosed with the autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barre Syndrome and was recovering in physical therapy to “learn to walk again.” He cautioned that “most people who have Gbs learn to walk again on their own within a year” but reassured fans that rehab was “going really well” and added that “I’m committed to getting better,...

Three songs into Sufjan Stevens’ Javelin, he asks perhaps the most common of questions, plainly and pitifully: “Will anybody ever love me? For good reasons, without grievance, not for sport?” He specifies his vision of this love as fairly uncomplicated, as if it’s not too much to ask for — just the simple promise of someone who will “pledge allegiance to my heart/Pledge allegiance to my burning heart.”
Stevens’ phrasing brings to mind a poem by Cameron Awkward-Rich, “Meditations in an Emergency”:
“Like you, I was born. Like you,...

Following a foray into electronica with 2020’s The Ascension and 2021’s Convocations, Sufjan Stevens’s Javelin marks a return to his singer-songwriter roots. Nearly every sound on the album sounds meticulously and intimately crafted, harking back to Stevens’s early DIY style. Each track begins solely with soft acoustic guitar and Stevens’s tender vocals, giving the effect that he’s performing these songs for no one else’s ears but his own.
Though less overt than it was on earlier works like 2004’s Seven Swans, religious imagery remains an integral part of Stevens’s music. “Jesus lift me up to a higher plane/Can you come around before I go insane?” he begs on “Everything That Rises.” That said, the song’s arrangement—including heavenly chamber strings and an angelic choir—could imbue even the most secular lyrics with the divine.
As always, expressions of spiritual and romantic devotion...

The album’s first single “So You Are Tired” marks a major shift back to the scaled-down, acoustic instrumentation reminiscent of 2015’s Carrie & Lowell in lieu of Stevens’ more recent electronic offerings like 2020’s The Ascension and 2021’s five-volume ambient project Convocations. Exclusive: Thriller directed by Omer Fast acquired for international sales by The Match Factory.
The Match Factory has boarded international sales on Remainder, visual artist Omer Fast’s thriller now in pre-production.
Soda Pictures will distribute in the UK and Ireland; Piffl Medien has German rights.
Tom Sturridge is set to star in the story, adapted from Tom McCarthy’s novel, about a man who has to reconstruct his past out of lost memories; he gets a large financial settlement for an accident he can¹t remember without any wholly reliable witnesses.
Fast, who writes and directs, said the film is “an elliptical thriller about a person whose past catches up with him when he’s most vulnerable: In absolute control.”
The film will shoot for six weeks on location in London and Berlin this spring; post-production will be done in Hamburg.
Fast’s artworks are in permanent collections at Tate Modern and Lacma; his latest installation...

Alexander Payne's new movie, starring Bruce Dern and Will Forte, is both a touching father-and-son journey and a penetrating look at a nation's desperate, empty soul
Alexander Payne, the director of The Descendants, Sideways and About Schmidt, has a new film, Nebraska. It's simple and brilliant, beautifully nuanced, funny, well acted and generous. It's in black and white and begins with an old man walking down the side of a highway in cold weather in Billings, Montana. This is Woody Grant (Bruce Dern), and he's planning to walk to Nebraska to collect his million dollars from a sweepstakes notice he's received in the mail. Every American adult has received such a notice. Printed like a deed, it says you've won a million bucks. Only in the fine print does it say you've won only if your numbers match. It's a trick to sell magazine subscriptions.
The movie refuses the...

With work of 2,000 artists from galleries worldwide the fair at Regent's Park, London, attracts collectors with deep pockets
It is chucking it down in Regent's Park, cars are splashing pedestrians, expensive frocks and suits are getting drenched. And, once you are inside the UK's biggest commercial art fair, you can add to the experience by buying your own dirty black puddle.
Each one of Marlie Mul's resin and sand hyperreal puddles would cost you €4,000 (£3,400)from the Frieze stand belonging to Fluxia, a young gallery based in Milan.
If you are not interested in splashing out on a puddle, then there are a further 151 contemporary art galleries displaying works in the vast tent that has appeared in the London park for the past 10 years.
As thousands descend on the fair – some buying, an awful lot more wishing they had the money to buy – hundreds of other galleries and museums open shows...

Liam Neeson guest-starred on "Everything That Rises Must Converge," but the presence of that stellar actor wasn't actually a focus of the episode.
Granted, it was fun watching the Love Actually reunion between him and Laura Linney. However, there were two major developments that overshadowed Neeson's wacky doctor and his stinging bees. We analyze each below.
1. The Kiss. I wasn't a fan of Todd and Cathy's lip lock. Up to this point, the relationship between these two felt like nothing else on television. A young doctor, facing the first death of a patient, growing close to said patient in a non-romantic sense was fresh and interesting.
But now the show has reduced that intriguing dynamic to a cliche: spurned boyfriend is lost and confused and makes a move on a woman to whom he's grown close.
The preface to the kiss also felt like a quick, unrealistic role reversal: wasn't...

Some stories take their time in the telling. Aaron Schneider, a cinematographer turned director, who won an Academy Award for his short film, decided that for his feature film debut, he'd pack a Southern gothic tale with more stars than there are sky. The end result is Get Low, a powerful folktale about a lonely hermit who decides to throw himself a funeral party so he can hear all the stories people are telling about him while he's still alive. It's a pretty simple story, but it's packed with so much pure acting, it's going to suck you in and never let go. Pound for pound, I have yet this year to see performances that can match up with the sheer volume and assuredness of the four leads in this film. Like a skilled gourmet, Schneider knows that when your ingredients are of this quality, you don't need to do...
