Gil Kenan, the director of Frozen Empire, dropped some news about the Ghostbusters Netflix cartoon. It’s called “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” and picks up after the 2021 flick “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” mixing in both new and old Ghostbusters characters. These recent movies are like building on the universe set up in the ’80s originals, just like how “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon did from ’86 to ’91, and its follow-up “Extreme Ghostbusters” in ’97.
Kenan was chatting on “A Trip to the Movies with Alex Zane” about this new Ghostbusters cartoon for Netflix. He said that he had just checked out this big art presentation for the show and that they were full steam ahead with making scripts and artwork. While he remained somewhat cryptic regarding specific details, he expressed that the current era presents an exhilarating opportunity for...

It's official: "Ghostbusters" is now a $1 billion franchise. Just shy of 40 years after the classic horror/comedy originally arrived in theaters back in 1984, the films have hit a major milestone at the box office thanks to the latest entry, "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire." Thanks to the new film's opening weekend haul, the series has now ascended the ranks to become one of the relatively few franchises in cinema history that can claim to have made ten figures or more in ticket sales.
Director Gil Kenan's "Frozen Empire" opened to $45 million over the weekend domestically, putting it on top of the charts in its debut. The Sony Pictures release also pulled in $16 million internationally, giving the film a $61 million start to its theatrical run. Looking at the bigger picture, that was enough to push the franchise past the $1 billion mark. The films have collectively grossed $1.005 billion through the years across four decades and five films.

The Real Ghostbusters had only concluded six years before its direct sequel premiered in 1997. And, as with many things geared toward children at the time, there was this trend of overselling the product to bring in both eyes and money. Hence the title of Extreme Ghostbusters (hereinafter referred to as Xgb). The revival never quite lived up to the marketing hype, however, this cartoon was also no lightweight. It proved to be a worthy successor that was neither afraid of no ghost nor afraid to push the envelope in ways its predecessor could not.
After a few blissful years of zero paranormal activity in Xgb, the supernatural has returned in full force to haunt New York City and the rest of America. So who you gonna call to handle this new flux of specters, ghouls and other uncanny creatures? Well, not the Ghostbusters. The original team understandably disbanded after fulfilling their mission.

This article contains light spoilers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
We’ve got one! And by “one” I mean a female Ghostbuster that even jerks might like! Maybe!
The last time we got women as Ghostbusters, sexist buffoons making bad-faith arguments about the apparent sanctity of boy Ghostbusters drowned out all discussion of the 2016 reboot Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, preventing both those who enjoyed the movie and those who disliked it for actual sane reasons from sharing their viewpoints.
That extreme response drove Sony to return to the franchise’s roots for its follow-up Ghostbusters: Afterlife, directed by Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. Although the movie took place in Oklahoma and took a decidedly dour, respectful tone, it focused on connections to the first team. It starred Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard as the daughter and grandchildren of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). Together with their friends and their teacher Mr.

The "Ghostbusters" franchise may be small when compared to the likes of the "Star Wars" saga or the ongoing films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But because the original movie is one of the greatest films of all time, the name still resonates across generations, and the film series now spans decades.
Beginning back in 1984, the original "Ghostbusters" from director Ivan Reitman and writers Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd (who also star in the movie as the titular paranormal exterminators alongside Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson) follows a trio of scientists who have been trying to figure how to detect and capture ghosts. Banished by the school funding them, they head out into the private sector of New York City and become paranormal exterminators who suddenly find themselves dealing with an apocalyptic scenario in the middle of the Big Apple. After a so-so-sequel in 1989, the franchise came back to life...

The 1980s was a golden era for TV animation. It was the decade of Thundercats, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Ducktales, The Smurfs, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet arguably, the best of them all was The Real Ghostbusters.
The show arrived at a time when studios were eager to translate box office gold into something palatable for younger audiences. It didn’t always quite go to plan, of course, as short-lived and ill-advised animated incarnations of everything from Rambo to The Karate Kid can attest.
But The Real Ghostbusters was different, running for 140 episodes across seven seasons.

Daniel Goldberg, who produced all three The Hangover films, Space Jam, Old School and many others and co-wrote movies including the Bill Murray comedies Stripes and Meatballs, died today in Los Angeles. He was 74.
Filmmaker Jason Reitman, whose late father Ivan Reitman directed Stripes and Meatballs and had known Goldberg since their college days in the 1960s, confirmed the news to Deadline but did not provide other details.
Goldberg and Ivan Reitman collaborated for more than 30 years, working together on features including the animated Heavy Metal (1981); toon/live-action hybrid Space Jam (1996), starring Michael Jordan alongside Looney Toons characters; 1994’s Junior, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the world’s first pregnant man, along with Danny DeVito and Emma Thompson; the 1997 Robin Williams-Billy Crystal comedy Fathers’ Day; the 1998 Harrison Ford-Anne Heche adventure pic Six Days Seven Nights; Howard Stern’s Private Parts, which the shock jock infamously promoted at...

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air was Will Smith’s vehicle. It showed he could be an actor. Even though he was playing a character named Will Smith, the role was actually based on creator Benny Medina. Smith did all right after the show but one of his standout costars was Alfonso Ribeiro as cousin Carlton.

A new “Ghostbusters” animated series is in development at Netflix, Variety has learned exclusively. The series hails from Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. onboard as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan recently co-wrote the live-action feature “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” with Reitman also directing.
Exact plot details on the new animated series are currently being kept under wraps. No writer is attached at the time of this publishing. Production will be handled by Netflix and Ghost Corps, Inc., which is based at Sony’s Columbia Pictures.
Should the project go to series, it would be the third animated “Ghostbusters” show in the franchise’s history. Previously, “The Real Ghostbusters” aired for 140 episodes, mostly on ABC and in syndication, from 1986-1991. It continued the adventures of the characters from the original film. It was followed by “Extreme Ghostbusters,” which aired for 40 episodes in syndication. That show...

The long-awaited Ghostbusters: Afterlife arrives in theaters this week, and the critics have been less than kind.
“This is spirit-of-’84 blockbuster cosplay — a cinematic equivalent of dressing up as Venkman and trying to get every last detail of your costume and D.I.Y. proton pack right, parading your loyalty for the benefit of your peers,” reads a review by Rolling Stone‘s David Fear. “And yet Ghostbusters: Afterlife somehow leaves out the magic that made that Bill Murray-fueled, big-budget genre mash-up so wonderful in the first place.”

Hello, readers! Right now, we’re dealing with a lot and I know for so many of you those concerns are compounded because you have little ones to keep safe and healthy (and even entertained) during this incredibly tense and scary time. Last week, I put together a list of light-hearted horror and sci-fi films that you can stream right now as you stay safely within the confines of your homes (you can read that list Here), and today, I’ve put together this massive streaming resource that I’ve cultivated with the younger genre fans out there in mind (especially if they’re not quite ready to make the leap to more “grown-up horror or sci-fi” just yet).
I tried to make sure to pull a sampling of shows and movies that would work for those of you who may have access to pay services like Netflix, Amazon Prime,...

A brief shot from the new Ghostbusters trailer ties into a threat that's been looming over the team since the first movie.
When it comes to Ghostbusters lore, if you were to ask about their biggest villains, the list would begin with the likes of Stay Puft/Gozer, Slimer, and Vigo the Carpathian. Then maybe some of the more memorable monsters from the cartoon or someone might bring up that incel guy from the reboot. But then there’s Ivo Shandor, a footnote of the franchise who has gradually transformed from a deep cut to being the puppet master of everything ecto.
The trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife hit recently and while it’s established as a sequel to the original two movies, they’re fairly light on the actual references so far. There’s a ghost trap, there’s old footage of the original team in the '80s,...

With a new Ghostbusters movie around the corner, Ernie Hudson opens up on the likelihood of his return to franchise.
Ghostbusters has turned into one of those strange evergreen franchises that has seen a ridiculous life far beyond its two original feature films. There have been two Ghostbusters animated series (the beloved The Real Ghostbusters and the better-than-you-remember Extreme Ghostbusters) and a wealth of comics and side stories that have made the franchise feel alive even though there hasn’t been movement on another feature film until recently. Rumors of a Ghostbusters 3 have been rampant for decades, but fans of the films received a major surprise when a teaser trailer dropped and announced that it's officially happening in 2020.
Details on the next installment have been scarce so far, other then the fact that Jason Reitman will be taking the franchise over from his father, Ivan Reitman. When...

Unlike so many sports drinks and snack foods in the late-90s, Extreme Ghostbusters earned its extremity. For those of you who grew up loving it as much as I did, you’ll be pleased to know that The Real Ghostbusters animated series is now streaming on Netflix. The Real Ghostbusters began its run in 1986, two years after the release of the first film, and aired until 1991, with 140 episodes in total airing over the course of seven seasons. With five long years between films, this series was a godsend to rabid Ghostbusters fans and became an immediate hit.
Compared to other cartoons produced at that time, the look of The Real Ghostbusters had distinct anime touches and boasted a variety of awesomely creepy ghost designs and atmospheric painted backgrounds. The show also featured writing talent like J. Michael Straczynski, whose wildly imaginative and ambitious storylines made this series arguably better than Ghostbusters II, and, in some ways, indirectly affected elements of the sequel, as the appearance of...

We look back at an often-overlooked part of the Ghostbusters legacy: it's Extreme Ghostbusters...
There was a time when no one cared about Ghostbusters. It was the late 90s - the pre-Pokemon, post-Mighty Morphin Power Rangers days to be exact. Nobody’s kid was exactly clamouring for a sequel, reboot, or a Ghostbusters continuation of any kind - except for Dan Aykroyd, who was practically lobbying for a third instalment while sitting front row at the Ghostbusters II premiere. Which is why we have this: an awkwardly timed, tonally disruptive Ghostbusters animated series.
Enter a brand new cartoon that picked up the sticky, ectoplasm-covered mantle of The Real Ghostbusters and wore it slightly askew to evoke that wholesome sense of 1990s irreverence: Extreme Ghostbusters.
Living up to its name, Xgb was extreme indeed. One glance at its radically inclusive team line-up is all you need to notice that.

Five years after the Ghostbusters saved New York from a ghost apocalypse, everyone thinks they’re frauds in “Ghostbusters II.” The new Honest Trailer takes a look at the 1989 sequel that actually already tarnished the franchise, according to Screen Junkies.
“Before you see the reboot that the Internet thinks will be an unfunny attempt to cash in on your nostalgia for the original ‘Ghostbusters,’ revisit the unfunny attempt at a sequel that kinda already took care of that,” says the voiceover.

The video pokes fun at the supernatural film by stating that the plot “is exactly the same as the first movie, but bad.” While it’s fun to see the original cast together again, it points out that this follow-up flick ruined the franchise by “doubling down on lame kid stuff” and taking all the fun grown-up comedy out of it.

Low on nightmare fuel? Fill up your tank by reliving your scariest memories from The Real Ghostbusters, a truly twisted 80s cartoon...
The Real Ghostbusters was a pretty messed-up cartoon sometimes. I think that’s one of life’s universal truths. I’m not quite sure why the world needed an unholy amalgam of anime, cheesy 80s synth music, and mind-bending eldritch horror with a chiselled version of Bill Murray on top. But it did, and it still feels so right to this day.

Proton packs at the ready, folks. Sony and Ivan Reitman are developing a Ghostbusters animated show set in the year 2050...
Paul Feig’s upcoming movie starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones isn’t the only Ghostbusters revamp that Sony has planned. There’s already been talk of a different movie (possibly with Channing Tatum and Chris Pratt), and now another ectoplasm-stuffed project from Sony has come to light.
The studio is developing a brand new Ghostbusters animated TV series, set in the far-flung future of 2050. The show is being ‘spearheaded’ by the original movie’s director Mr Ivan Reitman, and is said to focus on ‘a new generation of Ghostbusters’.
This, of course, isn’t the first time that the ‘busters have transitioned to the animated realm. Back in the 1980s, there was The Real Ghostbusters series, and Extreme Ghostbusters followed in the 1990s.

New York City’s next supernatural squad recently wielded their proton packs in the trailer for the new live action Ghostbusters, and now the director for the in-development animated Ghostbusters film has been announced.
Fletcher Moules will direct the animated Ghostbusters movie for Sony Pictures Animation, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Moules has been a hot hand behind the camera in the animation department as of late, with his vibrant and energetic commercials for the Clash of Clans online game receiving millions of views online.
Not much is known about the plot of the animated film, but if it continues to move forward in development, Ivan Reitman—director of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II—is expected to produce the project.
Reitman is also staying involved with the franchise he helped create through an initiative known as the Ghost Corps, which is focused on expanding the Ghostbusters universe through additional films, including...

Make that three Ghostbusters films currently in gestation, as Ivan Reitman is set to produce a new animated film...
Sony looks to have added another Ghostbusters film to its upcoming roster, with the news that the studio is also planning an animated adventure.
Currently, director Paul Feig is in post-production on his new Ghostbusters movie, which arrives in cinemas next July. That one stars Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kirsten Wiig and Chris Hemsworth.
There remains talk too of a second live action Ghostbusters film, that Drew Pearce had put together a story outline for, and had attracted at one stage the interest of Channing Tatum. Joe and Anthony Russo had been mooted to oversee that, but given their commitments to the Marvel cinematic universe until 2019, getting time in their schedule can't be easy.
Still, while that one works itself out, Sony Pictures Animation is getting to work on a new animated Ghostbusters film,...

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years since Ghostbusters premiered in theaters. To celebrate the film's legacy, director Ivan Reitman and cast members Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, Bill Murray, Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver reunited for an Entertainment Weekly photo shoot—and NBC's Today got an exclusive behind the scenes look. Harold Ramis died in February at age 69, though it's unclear why William Atherton and Rick Moranis do not appear on the magazine's Nov. 17-21 cover. The original Ghostbusters became an empire, starting with a 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters II. It launched two animated TV shows, The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters, plus several video games. I recently did a list of 1980s cartoons that I thought a lot of people had forgot about. Our readers really seemed to like it, and I know a lot of our readers grew up in the 1990s, so I thought I'd put together a list of animated series from that decade that you might not remember. We all have our favorites, like Batman: The Animated Series, Animanicas, X-Men, Spawn, and Gargoyles, but there are some cartoons that may have just slipped through the cracks of our minds. Just because these series are on the list doesn't mean they were bad shows. Although some of them definitely were.
Sonic Underground
Not only was this series poorly made, but it had a pretty awful theme song. The story is set in a completely different canon than any of the other Sonic the Hedgehog media. The ruler of Mobius, Queen Aleena, is overthrown by Dr.

There have been mixed feelings about the prospect of a third entry in the Ghostbusters series for a while now. Casting news, the two decades since the second film, and the recent death of Harold Ramis have all put a bit of a dampener on things. Will busting still make us feel good?
Well, after all these setbacks and hearsay Sony seem to be taking a different tack, as rumour has it that the studio are looking to Bridesmaids and The Heat director Paul Feig to helm the threequel and that, like his recent comedy successes, he will oversee an all-female cast of Ghostbusters.
Universal Pictures
All of the scuttlebutt about a third film has – thankfully – suggested that a new Ghostbusters film wouldn’t see the elderly likes of Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray farting around on mobility scooters, putting their backs out when they went to pick up a trap,...

Actor, SNL alumni, and vodka entrepreneur Dan Aykroyd announced this morning on NBC's Today Show that Ghostbusters 3 is a go. To the best of his knowledge.
Spending time in NBC studios, Aykroyd was there to talk to Carson Daly about his role in the upcoming James Brown bio-pic Get on Up due in theaters August 1st.
Towards the end of the interview, Carson brought up Ghostbusters III in which he stated
"It looks like we'll be in pre-production in the spring now, from what I'm hearing..It should be good."
At this time, no further details have been present other then this piece of information nor has Sony Pictures confirmed anything. And before anyone asks, no, there will not be any surprise announcements at Sdcc this week by the above mentioned parties.

Science fiction, man. I love it. But comic books make me want to hate it. I mean, I get that comic books aren’t really a literary medium. They can be, but they’re read mostly by people avoiding the commitment and sometimes challenge of a more rigorous, if still speculative, format, namely prose. Now I’m not going to pretend that prose Sf&F is always a step up from comics and, in fact, there’s pretty much an equal ratio of turds to gold (there’s some kind of law for this, I think). But so much more effort is put into the “science” part of science fiction in literature than it is in comics, and that seems to be an unfortunate result of the assumption (perhaps correctly) most comic book writers make that their audience isn’t interested in “harder” sci-fi or fantasy. But they try at it anyway sometimes,...

Interview conducted by and copyright Edward Gross Man of Steel storyboard artist Jay Oliva has had a long career in animation, where has has brought his storyboarding skills to such TV shows as Extreme Ghostbusters, RoboCop: Alpha Commando, Godzilla: The Series, The Batman, Justice League and The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, as well as the animated films Superman: Dooomsday, All-Star Superman, and Green Lantern: Emerald Knights. Additionally, he's directed Young Justice, Batman: The Dark Night Returns and the soon to be released Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox, among others. In the first part of Vfk's interview with Oliva, we look at the action of Man of Steel, particularly the last twenty minutes or so, exploring the thought process that went into those sequences and, of course, the controversy that has surrounded it. Voices From Krypton: I liked Man of Steel the first time, and I liked it even more the second time.

Unable to sleep due to nerves, I found myself watching Extreme Ghostbusters, the cartoon series sequel to The Real Ghostbusters cartoon. It's aimed at children, but with many jokes and references that adults and horror fans will get, like entire episodes based on Hellraiser and Killer Klowns From Outter Space. This led me to think about the shows I watched as a kid, and still like to check out from time to time these days. Horror shows aimed at k…...

Since Dan Aykroyd wrote a script for it in the 1990s, "Ghostbusters 3" has been a source of near constant fan speculation and hand-wringing, and was only amped up with the 2009 release of "Ghostbusters: The Video Game," which made use of some elements from that original script. Now, the impossible dream seems closer than ever to reality, with Aykroyd himself revealing quite a bit of new information on the film.
Coming Soon picked up on Aykroyd's comments on a recent episode of Dennis Miller's appropriately named radio show, "The Dennis Miller Show." The big story? That the current plan is to begin filming in Spring 2012.
After complimenting the script and while acknowledging that Bill Murray was the lead in the previous movies, Aykroyd pointed out "what we have to remember is that 'Ghostbusters' is bigger than any one component," explaining that the plan for the next...

I’m not sure who on the planet truly still believes that Ghostbusters 3 will be made… oh wait I do know somebody, Dan Aykroyd. Once again the biggest motivator (often, the only one) behind a twenty years overdue third movie in the action/comedy franchise is still hopeful that Bill Murray can be convinced to even read The Office writers Lee Eisenberg & Gene Stupnitsky’s script (Columbia are happy to front the $150 million to make the movie but only with Murray) but the comedy legend is once again proving to be the guy who ruins the party for everyone.
Murray is currently shooting Hyde Park on Hudson, a movie that he chose to do after the Ghostbusters 3 script was fed-exed to him which to many felt like a big F U to his former comedy partners, clearly showing them that the likelihood is he ain’t ever gonna make the film.

You might recall a story that we ran here on Fangoria.com in early January (read it here) involving a possible set of viral videos involving the Ghostbusters franchise. At the time we filed it under "rabid rumors" as the whole thing looked like an ecto-hoax. Today the mystery is solved, and below the cut you can feast your eyes on video of a new trio of French Ghostbusters taking on a Stay Puft-sized foe.
Likely to tie-in with the oft-mentioned 25th Anniversary of the first Ghostbusters film, a French automaker is using a modernized version of the supernatural cleaning crew to hype up their new Citroën C3 Picasso. The commercial below is actually pretty cool, and brings to mind a bit of the "Extreme Ghostbusters" cartoons from the late '90's. Our initial report pointed to a possibly German origin for the viral spots, many of which can be found on YouTube,...
