Titus Kaphar’s Exhibiting Forgiveness premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday.
“Some things can’t be worked out on canvas,” Andra Day says to André Holland in the drama, but some things can come alive on-screen and off-screen.
That certainly proved true now at the Sundance Film Festival, where Kaphar and Exhibiting Forgiveness just had a true moment. A packed Eccles Theater gave this afternoon’s premiere of the acclaimed painter’s feature directorial debut a resoundingly enthusiastic reaction.
A round of applause and cheers during the closing credits clearly caught the attention of suddenly busy buyers in the audience. As Kaphur and cast members Holland, Day, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and John Earl Jelks took the post-screening stage to a standing ovation, you could see a number of those buyers out in the lobby Asap and on their phones. Located somewhere between a classic opera, a modern dance piece, and a deadly fever dream — between the timeless beauty of ancient myth and the modern nightmare of America’s current immigration policies — Benjamin Millepied’s “Carmen” is stretched across a few too many borders to ever feel like it’s standing on solid ground. The Motion Picture Academy’s decision to ban Will Smith from Oscar ceremonies and events for 10 years as discipline for slapping Chris Rock is little more than an extended time out for a playground bully. It’s a toothless penalty that lays bare the shallowness of Hollywood morals.
At this point, the only person who can redeem the integrity of the Oscars is Smith himself. He needs to come to grips with the gravity of the offense he committed: slapping Rock, live on March 27 in front of millions on the Academy Awards stage. Smith needs to express-mail his golden trophy back to the Academy and publicly state something to the effect of: “Out of respect for the 94 years of honor conferred upon this award, I do not in good conscience feel worthy of being its custodian.”
Of the many unsettling things said in the aftermath of the slap, the most...

Legendary and Warner Bros Pictures have closed deals for four original cast members of “A Christmas Story” — Ian Petrella (Randy), Zack Ward (Scut Farkus), Scott Schwartz (Flick), and R.D. Robb (Schwartz) — to join the sequel to the holiday classic, according to an individual with knowledge of the project. The film’s original child star Peter Billingsley is set to reprise his role as Ralphie in the film.
The new film, intended for HBO Max, is titled “A Christmas Story Christmas” and will take place in the 1970s, 30 years removed from the original film, which was set in the 1940s. It will see an adult Ralphie bringing his own kids to his home on Cleveland Street to give them the same Christmas he had growing up. The film will aim to have the same period attention to detail in re-creating the ’70s as the original film did with the 1940s, and...

I've always loved being outdoors in the country. In fact, one of my most cherished childhood memories was the time my dad and I built a porch for my great aunt's wife. Her wife was kind and funny, and she had the best snacks. She was also the first openly queer person I'd ever met in rural Missouri - as far as I can remember - but she certainly wasn't the last.
Since then, I've come out as bisexual and I've lived in two of America's largest and most queer-friendly cities: New York City and Los Angeles. I lived in neighborhoods where rainbow Pride flags were the norm, I saw queer couples holding hands, and even kissing without fear. It was wonderful, and completely foreign to me as someone who was born and raised in a conservative Christian family in the rural Bible Belt.

Olympia Dukakis, who died on May 1 at 89, had a face like no one else’s. Stern but perpetually amused, with a warm leer of a grin that could light up a scene, she looked like the comedy and tragedy masks fused together. That’s a fitting reference, since Dukakis was of Greek heritage and, in a stage career that stretched back to 1961, appeared in classics from “Electra” to “Titus Andronicus” to “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.” Yet even when she was carving out her place in movies and TV, often cast as the Grande Dame Who’s Smarter Than Anyone in the Room, the Dukakis face, part cherub and part statue, made it seem that whatever reality she was confronting, she saw the absurdity of it, and the heartbreak as well. She hopscotched from one ethnicity to the next: Italian in “Moonstruck,” Southern aristocrat in “Steel Magnolias,” Jewish in films like “The Cemetery Club.

“It has been a personal exhilaration for me,” admits writer/director Julie Taymor about her new biopic “The Glorias,” which explores and celebrates the life of feminist icon Gloria Steinem. “I was so taken with the 80 years of her life,” Taymor reveals. “What people will really glean from this is why and how do you become the activist that she is? What was it about her early childhood and her relationship with her father, her mother, the idea that she didn’t go to school until she was 12 years old but that travel was the best education?” Watch the exclusive video interview with Taymor above.
In “The Glorias,” Oscar winners Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander play Steinem at different stages of her life as she rises to prominence as a leader of the women’s liberation movement. The film was written by Taymor and co-writer Sarah Ruhl, based on Steinem...

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian season 2 continues its streak of entertaining episodes with “The Heiress,” which brings in elements from The Clone Wars as well as gives us a clear sign of where the show is headed. Along the way, we’re treated to even more guest appearances, including Battlestar Galactica legend Katee Sackhoff, who brings Mandalorian warrior Bo-Katan Kryze to live-action for the first time, as well as Mercedes Varnado (better known as the WWE wrestler Sasha Banks), who portrays the gun-toting Nite Owl soldier Koska Reeves.
Two major cameos in one episode is more than enough to get viewers excited, but “The Heiress” throws in yet one more guest actor in the third actor. If you thought that fiercely loyal Imperial captain looked familiar, that’s because it’s actor Titus Welliver, who you probably know best from Lost, Deadwood, and as the...

Three big names of the ’60s -’70s Second Wave feminism were Betty Friedan, author of “The Feminine Mystique,” Germaine Greer, author of “The Female Eunuch,” and Gloria Steinem, journalist, activist and co-founder of Ms Magazine. While all were authors who helped launch that movement, it is Gloria Steinem, photogenic and with a journalist’s precision with words, who was a favorite of the media and has stuck in the public imagination. In The Glorias, Germaine Greer isn’t mentioned and Betty Friedan only in passing, but that is not surprising given that this is a biopic of Gloria Steinem, based on her autobiography “My Life On The Road.”

I have to be honest, on paper the new Netflix original game show series Sing On is my type of show! The whole premise of the show is that a group of singers compete to find the best karaoke singer in a sing-off with the most accurate singer going through each round. Additionally, this show is hosted by the icon that is Titus Burgess and to me, he is the perfect host for the show. All this combines together to make the wonderfully calm style of show that I personally love crammed full of incredible songs and performances throughout.
I absolutely Love Titus Burgess and really enjoy the camp energy he brings to the show. He is just his character from The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt who is incredibly sassy and wonderfully flamboyant that everything he does is iconic. Not only is he entertaining in this role, but what people have...

Back in 1999, Anthony Hopkins was ready to quit acting after playing the demanding title role in Julie Taymor’s “Titus.” “I put it behind me,” the 82-year-old actor said on a recent phone call from his home in Santa Monica. “Most of the time, things have been pretty good. When I was younger, I had a healthy ego and ambition and I was insecure. The great thing about getting older is that it falls away. I look in the mirror at myself, and say, ‘What’s the big deal? Come on! Thank you very much!’ I don’t know what I’m doing half the time.”
Methinks he doth protest too much. At the moment, the 82-year-old Hopkins is on a roll. Last year he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor as Pope Benedict in “The Two Popes,” opposite fellow Welshman Jonathan Pryce as Pope Francis. “I didn’t know Jonathan,...

Before he had the ear of the president, former White House Chief Political Strategist Steve Bannon tried his hand at Hollywood. As a producer, he was behind several small movies, but he really hit his movie-making stride writing and directing conservative documentaries aimed at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Here’s a complete list of every Hollywood project in which Bannon’s had a hand.
“The Indian Runner” (1991) — Executive Producer
Bannon’s first movie as an executive producer was, somewhat ironically, written and directed by famous Trump critic Sean Penn. “The Indian Runner” starred Viggo Mortensen and David Morse as brothers on the opposite sides of the law. Here’s the trailer.
“Titus” (1999) — Co-Executive Producer
Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange star in this modern-styled adaptation of the Shakespeare “Titus Andronicus.” That story packs an interesting mix of 1950s aesthetics and ancient Roman subject matter. Bannon served as co-executive producer on the project,...

Strange Angel has found its Aleister Crowley. Turn alum Angus Macfadyen has been tapped to play the founder of Thelema opposite Jack Reynor in the second season of the CBS All Access series.
Created by Mark Heyman and based on George Pendle’s book of the same name, Strange Angel explores the bizarre true story of Jack Parsons, a man who straddled the worlds of science and the occult, pioneering America’s rocketry program while simultaneously practicing sex magick rituals and living by the creed “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.”
At the conclusion of Season 1, Jack and his team from Caltech make a scientific breakthrough that secures the military’s interest as the country nears the brink of war. Julie Taymor wasn’t happy with Sony’s 2007 release of her biggest-budget film to date, the $45-million “Across the Universe.” An original movie musical, sung live long before “Les Miserables” or “La La Land,” her film was a memorably inventive and visually rich narrative comprised of mini-music videos, from multiple Salma Hayeks dancing in a vets’ hospital in “Happiness is a Warm Gun” to Bono’s Merry Prankster singing “I Am the Walrus” at a psychedelic ’60s cocktail party.
However, it received love-hate reviews and the box office topped out at a disappointing $24.3 million domestic, partly because Taymor delivered a more sophisticated, diverse, and densely political musical than Revolution Studios’ Joe Roth and Sony had in mind. Now, Sony has agreed to something of a make-good, booking a sparkling 4K restoration via Fathom Events across the country on three nights, July 29 – August 1. It’s worth checking out on the big screen.
