Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman has, no doubt, been one of the most favorite characters from the DC Universe, and nearly everyone who has played her to date has been widely loved in the role. One of the actresses who played her was actress Lynda Carter, who turned out to be so greatly endearing to both fans and critics that she is closely identified with the character to date.
Wonder Woman in the comics.
Being widely regarded as the most accurate Diana Prince, she gave her opinions on who the next person could be to carry on the superheroine’s legacy. Surprisingly enough, she was reported to have called Sandra Bullock “too old” for the role. However, Carter later on not only debunked these reports but also claimed she had even vouched for the actress to play the DC superhero.

Daisy Ridley, known best as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, has had a pretty fascinating career outside of a galaxy far, far away. From narrating documentaries to failed YA sci-fi adaptations, she's certainly spread her wings. Later this year, Ridley will get the chance to lead a straight-up action flick called "Cleaner." It sounds like a riff on "Die Hard" from director Martin Campbell, who directed two of the greatest "James Bond" movies ever made. We may not even have a trailer yet, but it sounds very much like the film is going to live up to the promise of the talent involved.
The actor was on hand at this year's SXSW film festival in Austin, Texas, to promote her new movie "Magpie." During a panel, Ridley got to talking about some of her more physically demanding roles as of late, including the upcoming Disney drama "Young Woman and the Sea.

Walt Disney Studios has had a pretty abysmal year at the international box office in 2023. Between Ant-Man: Quantumania, The Little Mermaid, Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and perhaps most disappointing, The Marvels, the typically successful movie studio has lost an ungodly amount of money by producing overly expensive feature films that failed to resonate among the masses and earn back their financial investments. If the studio isn’t careful and the trend continues, Disney could break another record for the all-time biggest box-office bomb on record.
Speaking of which, what would your answer be if you had to guess Disney’s most notorious financial flop of all time? Well, up until recently, the correct response would have been John Carter, the disastrous 2012 adaptation of Edgar Rice Boroughs’ A Princes of Mars. However, after tallying up the receipts in 2023, Disney’s most infamous box office failure now belongs to The Lone Ranger,...

2023 has felt like things are starting to get back on track for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. The year has seen some fantastic films and box office numbers hitting some great heights, in particular that phenomena that was the Barbie and Oppenheimer weekend. It’s clear for the first time, in a long time that cinema is starting to look in good shape once again. While there are many films that are yet to be released in the UK that have made many other best of the year lists, here are my 10 favourite films realised in the UK in 2023.
10. Wonka (Paul King)
For many perhaps the biggest surprise of the year, but for fans of Paul King it comes as no surprise that this version of Wonka is the most fun he’s ever been. Invoking some of what makes Frank Capra so brilliant, the film feels like a community coming together,...

With The Mask of Zorro, Antonio Banderas truly marked himself as a genuine star and sex symbol across the globe. While he earned acclaim for his collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar in Spain and made his presence known in the States with Philadelphia and Interview with the Vampire, The Mask of Zorro was his first leading role to near $100 million at the domestic box office. But the iconic swordsman almost had another man behind the mask: Tom Cruise.
According to The Mask of Zorro‘s original director Mikael Salomon, executive producer Steven Spielberg wanted Tom Cruise to star. “Who else was [in the mix]? Some big — oh yeah, Tom Cruise. Early on, [Spielberg] wanted to offer it to him. Have you heard that? He wanted to offer it to Tom Cruise. And my friend and countryman Bille August had done The House of the Spirits with all non-Latinos, and he got in so much hot water because of that,...

Martin Campbell's "The Mask of Zorro" is one of the most rousing adventure films of the 1990s, a bracing throwback to old-school Errol Flynn swashbucklers that dazzles with masterfully staged sword fights. Perhaps most importantly, it's powered by an emotionally resonant narrative that raises the stakes sky-high, leading to a breathtaking climax that had audiences cheering all three times I saw the film theatrically.
Antonio Banderas is absolute perfection as Alejandro Murrieta, a rakish outlaw who becomes the unlikely successor to Anthony Hopkins' Don Diego de la Vega, aka Zorro. Murrieta also falls for Catherine Zeta Jones' beautiful and feisty Elena Montero, who does not know that her father, the evil Don Rafael Montero, stole her as an infant from de la Vega and his wife Esperanza (Julieta Rosen).

Lots of people dream of making a studio movie, but in the midst of their reverie, they don't always take into account just what a grueling process it can be. People work long hours and are expected to be at their sharpest every day so that the project doesn't fall behind schedule or go over budget. From the director on down, the pressure to deliver is immense. So every now and then, a little levity is in order. This occasionally results in on-set pranks, which sometimes get a tad out of control.
Consider the case of 1996's "The Fan." Tony Scott's thriller about a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan (Robert De Niro) who begins stalking his favorite baseball player (Wesley Snipes) was a high-profile production for Sony. The studio poured $55 million into the movie, and hoped it would be a late-summer, adult-skewing smash à la "The Fugitive" or "Unforgiven.

The film gods are a fickle bunch. If the flip of the coin had landed on a different outcome at various points in Hollywood history, the entire landscape of cinema as we know it could be completely changed. In fact, movie star Tom Cruise is something of a cottage industry to himself when it comes to major roles that he could've signed on for, but ended up little more than fascinating notes of trivia -- in our universe, at least. There's the infamous "Iron Man" scenario that could've seen him suit up as Tony Stark instead of Robert Downey, Jr., of course, along with the near-miss of starring in the classic "Shawshank Redemption." But there's one other little-known factoid that completes this little trilogy of alternate-history Cruise projects: one where he could've been cast as the lead of "The Mask of Zorro," incredibly enough.

His predictive sci-fi action film "Minority Report" was still several years away, but in 1997, Steven Spielberg could already see the future.
At that time, Spielberg was an executive producer of "The Mask of Zorro," and during production, he sensed something in the air. In an interview earlier this year, "Zorro" star Antonio Banderas recounted what the famed filmmaker told him:
"Steven Spielberg said to me once when we were shooting, 'This is probably going to be one of the last Westerns shot in the way the Westerns were shot in the old days, with real scenes and real horses, where everything is real, real sword fighting, no CGI.' Everything was practical. And he said, 'But things are going to change. They're going to change and they're gonna change fast. And so you should be proud of this movie.' When Sean Connery opened the envelope in 2003 for Best Supporting Actress, he simply pronounced the winner as “Catherine.” Such was the expectation of her win and the sensation she had caused in the film “Chicago” that his former co-star didn’t even feel the need to pronounce her full three names: Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Zeta-Jones initially was known to American audiences for her statuesque and striking beauty. She first gained notice on these shores in a television mini-series about the Titanic. We might be in the era of The Brand Movie, but the 1990s were a heyday for branded video games and some of the most unlikely people wound up with a game of their own. There's "Chex Mix: Chex Quest," Shelley Duvall's It's A Bird's Life," 7up's "Spot Goes to Hollywood," "Make My Video: Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch," and of course, "Pepsiman." Most of these games are terrible at best and unplayable at worst, but there's a certain charm to playing something so clearly intended to make a quick buck off of name recognition. But then there's "Steven Spielberg's Director's Chair," a game that for all intents and purposes was made with the goal of inspiring the next generation of filmmakers by meeting them halfway and educating them through a medium they were already enjoying.

There are few pulpy visualizations of revenge that play as satisfyingly as the climax of Martin Campbell’s The Mask of Zorro. Released 25 years ago, the still surprisingly lithe and surefooted swashbuckler culminates with a multigenerational crescendo of vengeance, which is served bloody and fierce. On one level of a crumbling Californian gold mine, the original Zorro is a now aged and dying Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), and he grapples in his last breath with the man who stole his life and imprisoned him in hell for 20 years. Yet a literal platform below this Count of Monte Cristo passion play is something even bleaker and more vicious: the storm of swords unleashed by a younger Zorro (Antonio Banderas) and his own object of disdain: Capt. Harrison Love (Matt Letscher).

"The Mask of Zorro" is now 25 years old, though you might not know by watching it. Director Martin Campbell's 1998 film is a sexy, high-octane swashbuckler that, along with filmmaker Stephen Sommers' remake of "The Mummy," was likely responsible for the bisexual awakening of an entire generation in the late '90s. Leads Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones certainly light up the screen as newbie Zorro-in-training, Alejandro, and his predecessor's daughter, Elena, whether they're cutting a rug across the dance floor or mixing swordplay with flirtation. Then there's the breathtaking practical stunts and set pieces, which Campbell stages with the utmost elegance in collaboration with his cast and crew -- not least of all his longtime director of photography Phil Méheux, who imbues the film with a visual grandiosity befitting of a Western epic.
More than anything, it's the film's practical approach that keeps it feeling timeless. Campbell, who had...

It took a while, but Antonio Banderas finally earned his first Oscar nomination for “Pain and Glory.” Where does this deeply personal outing from frequent collaborator Pedro Almodovar fall in with the rest of his filmography? Take a tour through our photo gallery of Banderas’ 15 greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Banderas made his film debut over three decades ago in 1982, in Almodovar’s “Labyrinth of Passion.” The actor would become a frequent leading man for the Spanish auteur, later appearing in such films as “Matador” (1986), “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” (1988), “Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!” (1990), “The Skin I Live In” (2011) and “I’m So Excited!” (2013).
He made his English-language acting debut with “The Mambo Kings” (1992) a decade after his first film with Almodovar. His performances in “Evita” (1996) and “The Mask of Zorro” (1998) brought him Golden Globe nominations for Best Film Comedy/Musical Actor. He reaped a...

The Amblin Entertainment producer, who financed that year’s “The Mask of Zorro,” told lead star Antonio Banderas on set that the age of practical effects was dwindling.
“Steven Spielberg said to me once when we were shooting, ‘This is probably going to be one of the last Westerns shot in the way the Westerns were shot in the old days, with real scenes with real horses, where everything is real, [real] sword fighting, no CGI,'” Banderas told Yahoo! Entertainment during a 25th-anniversary appreciation of the film. “Everything was [practical].”

Antonio Banderas celebrated the 25th anniversary of “The Mask of Zorro” in a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment. The Martin Campbell-directed adventure movie was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and grossed $250 million at the worldwide box office in 1998.
Spielberg was on hand during the film’s production — Banderas said the Oscar-winning director correctly warned him about the future of practical vs. CGI filmmaking.

Ten years to the weekend of the release of “Man of Steel,” and months after even Zack Snyder himself finally bid a fond farewell to the so-called SnyderVerse, Netflix is sharing a behind-the-scenes look at Snyder’s latest fantasy epic. “Rebel Moon,” which will (as of this time) be a two-part film that will be offered in a PG-13 version and an R-rated cut, takes significant inspiration from one of Snyder’s favorite films, “The Seven Samurai.”

The summer movie season of 1998 actually began twelve months previously. While the Jurassic Park sequel The Lost World was still marauding around the multiplexes, a teaser trailer suddenly appeared showing a group of schoolchildren in a museum staring up in awe at the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Suddenly a gigantic lizard’s foot crashes through the ceiling and crushes the T-Rex as if it were an ant. Guess who’s coming to town…

Daisy Ridley, best known as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, is getting the chance to shine as the star of her very own throwback action flick. What's more, she's working with the director of a couple of the best action movies of the last 30 years. Ridley is set to star as the lead in "Cleaner," which sounds very much like "Die Hard, but in London" with Martin Campell, of "Casino Royale" fame, in the director's chair. If I may? F*** yes.
According to Deadline, the action/thriller is being taken out to buyers at the Cannes Film Market, with plans to actually shoot the film in late summer. No word yet on who will be eyed to star alongside Ridley, but this marks one of her most flashy gigs since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" hit theaters in 2019. Since Warner Bros. Discovery already dropped the first trailer right in time for “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” it’s no surprise that “Blue Beetle” didn’t get much more new footage beyond a longer version of the existing trailer.
Of course, that trailer makes the case pretty well, and the next trailer will get played before most screenings of “The Flash,” “Barbie” and “The Meg 2” alongside rival kid-flicks like “The Haunted Mansion” and “Tmnt: Mutant Mayhem” prior to its August 18 theatrical debut.

A classic hero is being reimagined for modern viewers, this time for the small screen. Disney+ is currently developing a new "Zorro" TV series, one that will star Wilmer Valderrama ("That '70s Show") as the swashbuckling swordsman. But we now know who is going to be heading up the show behind the scenes, as Bryan Cogman, of "Game of Thrones" fame, has been tapped as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer.
The news comes to us from Deadline, which explains that Valderrama is also on board as an executive producer, in addition to his starring role. The outlet also explains that the "Zorro" show will be "a bold reimagining of Disney's classic series for a modern audience; an epic adventure rooted in California's rich and diverse history, bursting with humor, sinister intrigue, romantic entanglements, and swashbuckling thrills." “In a way, that match represented the personalities of what is going on in our country right now,” said Oscar-nominated actor Antonio Banderas when speaking about the Spanish being eliminated from the World Cup by the neighboring country of Morocco. “The Spanish didn’t know what to do. They were just passing horizontally, but the goal is there! So congratulations to Morocco. What the hell! I was surprised the defeat didn’t hurt me that much. On other days, I would’ve spent three days depressed!”
Banderas’ heartfelt congratulations to the Moroccan soccer team were received with great enthusiasm by the audience at his In Conversation event at the Red Sea Film Festival, where his latest, “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” is playing as part of Red Sea: Families and Children strand.
The actor went on to say his ties to Morocco come from his childhood years living in Marbella.

Photo Credit: DreamWorks Animation LLC Antonio Banderas has voiced the Puss in Boots character ever since its first appearance in the Shrek series with 2004’s Shrek 2. As a casting move, it made perfect sense. After all, the character was a swashbuckling pirate of a cat, and Banderas had starred in the title role of 1998’s The Mask of Zorro, a character with similar attributes. Florence Pugh, who joined the cast of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in her first voiceover role, also thinks Banderas is the perfect man for the job, and she told us why. There comes a time when many legendary characters have to pass the torch–or sword, as it were–to the next generation. Who will carry on that legacy is always the big question, but for Zorro, Antonio Banderas thinks there’s only one guy fit to handle the role: Tom Holland.
Banderas, who portrayed the titular hero in 1998’s The Mask of Zorro 2005’s The Legend of Zorro, recently sat down with ComicBook.com to discuss if he had any interest in another entry. “I would consider that possibility, why not?…I think today, I said something like that to somebody. They asked me about Zorro. If they called me to do Zorro, I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
When prompted on who exactly could wield the sword, Banderas said Tom Holland. “I did Uncharted with him and he’s so energetic and fun and [he’s got] this spark,...

Antonio Banderas Nominates Tom Holland As The Heir To The Mask Of Zorro, Internet Strongly Disagrees
Reboots are the bread and butter of Hollywood, which means that we millennials (and even the elder zoomers), are becoming accustomed to seeing our childhood favorites being given the reboot treatment. The IP up for debate today is Zorro and this time we have Antonio Banderas to blame.
While discussing the upcoming "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" with Comicbook.com, the topic of 1998's "The Mask of Zorro," and the possibility of Banderas returning for a sequel, came up. "If they called me to do 'Zorro,' I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch," shared Banderas. Asked whether there were any actors currently working who could take up the mantle of the masked vigilante, he considered for a moment and then replied, "Tom Holland. With the upcoming “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” Antonio Banderas is returning to his most iconic animated role as the swashbuckling cat from the “Shrek” franchise. So how would he feel about reprising his most famous live action role? Apparently, he’s open to it.
Though he had found plenty of success working as an actor in Spain, Banderas rose to mainstream American prominence in 1998 when he starred in “The Mask of Zorro,” playing the eponymous masked vigilante to great fanfare. He reprised the role in the 2005 sequel “The Legend of Zorro,” but there still could be more to come. In a new interview with Comicbook.com, Banderas revealed that he would be open to returning to the franchise in a mentor role that allowed a younger actor to do most of the sword fighting.

More than a decade after “Shrek” prequel/spinoff “Puss in Boots,” the flamboyant feline is up to his old tricks — but has yet to meet the computer-animated ogre whose party he’s destined to crash in “Shrek 2.” As that series wore on, the “Shrek” franchise took on so many popular side characters that by the fourth outing, there was hardly room left to swing a cat.
A knee-high hero who walks, talks and swashbuckles upright, Puss was one of the few tagalongs rich enough to warrant his own origin story. Now, director Joel Crawford (“The Croods: A New Age”) goes dark, bringing the fearless cat face to face with his own mortality. By forcing Puss to contemplate his priorities, the sequel more than justifies its own existence, while paving the way for how his path meets the big green guy’s.

Antonio Banderas has expressed renewed interest in returning for another “Zorro” film. Speaking with Comicbook.com, the actor shared that he’d be open to helping another hero take on the mantle.
“Yes, I would, I would consider that possibility, why not?” Banderas said when asked about returning for a potential follow-up. “If they called me to do ‘Zorro,’ I would do what Anthony Hopkins did for me, which is to pass the torch.”
Who should the torch go to in Banderas’ opinion? He put his vote down for Tom Holland, who he recently starred alongside in Sony’s “Uncharted,” based on the popular Playstation video game series.
“I did ‘Uncharted’ with him, and he’s so energetic and fun,” Banderas said of Holland’s acting style. “He’s got this spark, too. Why not?”

The day has finally arrived: Netflix has ads.
On Thursday, the streaming giant officially released its “Basic with Ads” tier in the United States. The cheap(er) subscription plan includes four to five minutes of ads per hour, with each ad being about 15-30 seconds long. These spots play both before titles and in the middle of films and TV episodes. There’s certain exceptions; when new Netflix original films coming to the streamer, like “Knives Out 2,” all ads play before the movie starts. However, not all movies have the ad-tier option.
Four of the movies on the streamer’s current Top 10 are unavailable on the plan. Those titles still appear in searches on the ad tier, but they’re marked with a red lock icon in the right-hand of its thumbnail. Clicking on an unavailable film opens up a window prompting the user to change their subscription in order to access the content.

Two winning short films have been selected for the “One Story Up” program, founded by Oscar-winning director Roger Ross Williams and Emmy-winning producer Geoff Martz. These projects, “Magic Ring” and “Through Sunless Ways,” were selected to receive the grand prize: funding for production from Topic streaming service as well as mentorship from Williams, who intends to work as executive producer on both shorts.
“Magic Ring” will premiere at the New York Film Festival Oct. 10, which will then be followed by a Q&a with the creator, Alex Ashe. The 16-minute scripted short film follows an armed pursuit in Brooklyn that leads to surreal out-of-body and near-death experiences.
A premiere date has yet to be announced for “Through Sunless Ways,” a 24-minute unscripted short created by filmmakers Kira Dane and Katelyn Rebelo, who have previously co-directed together on a documentary called “Mizuko.” The duo’s upcoming release is structured as a series of five vignettes,...

It’s the futuristic year of 2022. An awful incident had taken place in Benghazi. It’s a world where big corporations now run an essential function of society. It’s a bleak and depressing vision where people’s movements can be tracked by satellites. It seems like human nature de-evolves back to a blood-thirsty, and primitive instinct with warring factions convinced it’s survival of the fittest in a dystopian society that’s a prison.
This, ironically, also happens to be the backdrop of the 1994 film No Escape. The cult film came from future Goldeneye and The Mask of Zorro director Martin Campbell and starred the late, great Ray Liotta. The movie will be released for the first time on Blu-ray from Unearthed Classics. The Blu-ray will feature new interviews with director Campbell, producer Gale Anne Hurd, and co-writer Joel Gross.
