Movies offer an excellent excuse to ruminate on your deepest fears, and they’re certainly cheaper than therapy. So if you’re struggling with some deep mommy issues, why not cue up a matriarchal tale of terror and sort through some of that trauma in style?
Auteurs have been hashing out their issues with their mothers on the big screen for decades, to varying degrees of success. Consider mother-centric horror as its own subgenre, and you’ll notice there’s a tendency among filmmakers to take more than one stab at the thorny subject matter. Alfred Hitchcock used the real crimes of serial killer Ed Gein and added a profoundly morbid murder of a mother at a motel to brilliantly realize Norma and Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) for his exquisite “Psycho” in 1960, of course. But he’d whipped up something just as insidiously spectacular with Leopoldine Konstantin for his earlier...

Earlier this month, we learned that Game of Thrones cast members Sophie Turner and Kit Harington will be reuniting for writer/director Natasha Kermani’s Gothic horror film The Dreadful… and close on the heels of that announcement comes the news that Turner has also signed on to star in a psychological thriller called Trust, which is coming our way from Twisted Pictures, the production company behind the Saw franchise.
Twisted Pictures has secured a multi-picture deal with Republic Pictures, with Republic Pictures acquiring the worldwide rights to Trust. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, “The Paramount Global housed Republic Pictures was revived in 2023 as an acquisitions only label, and has a slate that includes Samara Weaving starrer Azreal and Jon Voight action film The Painter.” The Republic Pictures name goes back to 1935 and the days when the company was a standalone studio that specialized in serials, Westerns, and B-movies.

When a suspicious King Sabrian puts the seemingly reformed Queen Abigail in charge of Princess Blanche's education, he expects political schemes and tantrums, not a request that he have regular dinners with his daughter. When you think of your favorite children's books, you might fondly recall getting lost in a Dr. Seuss adventure or your parents reading you "Goodnight, Moon." "Treasure Island" might come to mind, or if you're an Brit like myself, perhaps a delightful bedtime adventure with the "Famous Five." Well, it seems the next generation can look forward to something altogether more unsettling because Ridley Scott's seminal 1979 effort "Alien" is now being made into a children's book.

Jena Malone took to social media to share that she was sexually assaulted during the time she was filming The Hunger Games.
The star joined the franchise in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in 2013. Malone posted a photo on Instagram after she wrapped filming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part Two, which was in 2015.

It’s a long, treacherous road for child stars. Many don’t make it to adulthood unscathed, and rarely with a respected career to show for it. Much like Kristen Stewart or Daniel Radcliffe, however, Jena Malone has comfortably moved into a mature body of work that runs the gamut from auteur-driven indies (to stay relevant) with a smattering of popular studio fare (to stay afloat).
Once a precocious kid who brought unexpected gravitas to box office hits like “Contact” (1997) and “Stepmom” (1998), Malone successfully transitioned into arty indie darling with her turn in “Donnie Darko” (2001). Since then, she’s excelled in everything from horror to sci-fi to period comedies, bringing her unique screen presence to “The Neon Demon” and “The Hunger Games” without missing a beat.
So, what’s her secret?
“Maybe I sold my soul to the independent film devil, and I’ve been moderately sacrificing my blood every new moon or something.

Love is in the air on Netflix in February, from new romcoms like the Reese Witherspoon-starring “Your Place or Mine” to the return of murderous stalker Joe Goldberg in “You” Season 2 part 1.
Penn Badgley has long dispelled any misnomers of his “You” character being a romantic, but Joe himself still believes that’s who he is at his core. After killing his wife and faking his own death, Joe sets off for Europe so he can find Marianne (Tati Gabrielle), the woman he convinced himself he’s in love with before she learned the truth and fled. But breaking old habits has never been easy for old Joe, who quickly gets caught up in a most dubious clique of London high society that has its own struggles with lust, power, and the occasionally fatal crime.

Walmart has such sights to show you. The retail giant is apparently in the extradimensional sadomasochism game, as they now sell the puzzle box from Hellraiser as, why not, a kids toy.
Marketed as a Stem building toy, the Hellraiser puzzle box has this description on the Walmart website: “The configuration puzzle cube can move and change shape like in a movie. It can be an educational toy to help children build self-esteem and confidence, develop spatial awareness, train memory skills, and exercise hand-eye coordination.”
The Hellraiser puzzle box depicted is known as the Lament Configuration, designed by the fictional Philip LeMarchand. And since it is used as a door to other dimensions, you absolutely do not want your child to solve it–unless you want Butterball and Chatterer the Cenobites reading “Goodnight Moon” to them before bed.

Jimmy Fallon is pretty sure he knows why Trump took a group of colleagues out onto his golf course without any clubs this week. On Tuesday’s episode of “The Tonight Show,” the late night host joked that it was actually an excavation party, meant to dig up more classified documents that Trump had buried.
On Monday, the twice-impeached former president was photographed at his Virginia golf course, accompanied by several men, all seemingly dressed for golf. But none of them appeared to be wearing golf shoes and also, not one of them had clubs. The picture quickly drew mockery online, with many poking fun at the idea that Trump simply wanted to be seen. But Fallon had another guess.
“Trump was like ‘So I think I buried the documents somewhere around here, so start digging, boys!'” he joked. “Yeah, Trump was smart! He was like ‘How about nine...

Every family has its secrets, and the Romans prefer to bury them.
The season premiere of the highly-anticipated Monarch introduced us to the first family of Country. By the end of Monarch Season 1 Episode 1, it's evident that the first family is a hot damn mess.
Seriously, Dottie may be gone, but there will be no shortage of drama in her wake.
Monarch joins the ranks of series that thrive off of focusing on dysfunctional family elements and an obsession with legacy. It follows that formula almost exactly, attempting to pull from Dallas, Yellowstone, and Dynasty while also dazzling us with familiar faces like Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins.
Comparison is the thief of joy but inevitable, so when holding this series up to the standards of, say, Yellowstone, well, it doesn't stand a chance.
It's early yet, but there's already some confusion with deciphering what type of series Monarch hopes to be.

A coming-of-age character study about a woman already of a certain age, Rebecca Zlotowski’s “Other People’s Children” feels, to put it bluntly, delightfully French. And that goes beyond the outer trappings, the Paris setting, the opening shot of the Eiffel Tower glittering in the night sky, or the countless dimly lit, book-lined apartments where the film’s characters enjoy wine and cigarettes, toasting to the pleasures of sophisticated adulthood.
Let those elements aside and consider this story of sentimental education in function and form: For one thing, . For another, consider this particular drama’s focus on complex emotional scales — finding story beats given Hollywood polish in “Jerry Maguire” and “Stepmom” and exploring them with a focus on the characters’ inner lives — flowing naturally from the French literary tradition. “Other People’s Children” leaves no doubt about its parentage.

Though not exactly a darling of the critics, Oscar nominee Chris Columbus has created a number of box office hits throughout his 30 year career. Let’s take a look back at all 15 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Columbus rose to prominence as a hot young screenwriter after penning such titles as “Gremlins” (1984), “The Goonies” (1985) and “Young Sherlock Holmes” (1985). He made his directorial debut when he was just 29-years-old with the teenage comedy “Adventures in Babysitting” (1987) before raking in the box office dollars with “Home Alone” (1990), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001), to name but a few.
Though he’s seldom received awards recognition as a writer or director, Columbus has had success in that regard as a producer, earning an Oscar nomination in Best Picture for “The Help” (2011), for which he also competed at the PGA and BAFTA. He won...

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Exclusive: Former Grown-ish co-showrunner Jeni Rice-Genzuk Henry has signed an overall deal with BET Studios, the venture launched last year by Paramount and BET to generate premium content from Black creators for Paramount+, Showtime, CBS, Nickelodeon, BET+ and BET, as well as select third-party platforms.
Under the pact, Rice-Genzuk Henry already is working on a couple of projects, including Snatched, an hour-long dramedy in development at Showtime, about two women seeking to “enhance” their lives with plastic surgery; and Unlikely Stepmom, an adaptation of a French format (co-created by Agnes Hurstel and Lea Domenach) about a 25-year-old woman who falls in love with a middle-aged man, who, after a whirlwind romance reveals that he has a six-year-old daughter.
“As BET aligns with the evolving media landscape, BET Studios provides storytellers creative autonomy, leaving room for more veritable representation of Black culture on screen,” said Aisha Summers Burke, EVP, and General Manager,...

Amanda Kloots and her sister Anna Kloots penned the book and are adapting the screenplay themselves. No financier has been set yet.
In Live Your Life, Kloots reflects on love, loss, and life with her husband, Broadway star and Tony-nominee Nick Cordero, whose public battle with Covid and tragic death made headlines around the world. In the early spring of 2020, Cordero was hospitalized for what he and his wife believed was a severe case of pneumonia. Entering Cedars-Sinai, there was no indication that Cordero would never return home. Diagnosed with Covid, Cordero – who only a few days earlier was the picture of health – soon deteriorated. What?!
Goodness, Virgin River Season 3 Episode 5 dropped some bombshells and brought the drama and all of the emotions.
From Todd's despicable offer, those devastating Lilly scenes, and Brie dropping a massive bomb on Mel before collapsing to the ground, there's so much we have to discuss.
Lynda Boyd has this likeness to Susan Sarandon, so one of the hardest parts about her storyline is the reminder of the film Stepmom. We know the film ends in tragedy, and it's likely that there's no going up from here for Lilly.
She's such a wonderful, strong, dedicated woman, and she's been through hell and back. She's lost so much, and she's endured more than most in her lifetime. One never would've envisioned that she'd end up terminally ill, especially when it seemed she had made some progress and found her footing again.
She focuses so much on the other people around her,...

The unofficial “screenwriters den” for film and TV screenwriters known as theOffice has reopened its doors in Santa Monica after relocating from its original home in Brentwood.
Not to be confused with the NBC comedy by the same name (although it would be cool if it had the same set up), theOffice is a communal workspace for writers who are working on the next big film screenplay or TV series — and they have a roster of alumni to back it up which include J.J. Abrams, Chris Weitz, as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg who wrote What Lies Beneath and Choke. Other alums include Stepmom writer Gigi Levangie, Finding Dory‘s Victoria Strouse, All the Money in the World‘s David Scarpa, and Noah Oppenheim, screenwriter of Jackie and The Maze Runner.

J.J. Abrams and Sara Bareilles are set to executive produce a new half-hour dramedy series for Apple called Little Voices. The series is being written, directed, and produced by Jessie Nelson, who is being films such as I Am Sam, Stepmom, and Corrina, Corrina.
The series is described as "a love letter to the diverse musicality of New York which explores the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s." The music for the series will come from Bareilles who previously collaborated with Nelson on the Tony Award–nominated musical Waitress.
Apple has already ordered a ten-episode first season. This seems like a great project for everyone involved, including Abrams who got his big break with the series Felicity. Judging by what we know, it seems like there are may be some similarities between Felicity and Little Voices.

When Allison Janney watched Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan compete in the 1994 Olympics — along with 126 million others — she had no idea that she’d eventually earn her first Oscar buzz for playing Harding’s mother. Most of those viewers tuned in because weeks prior, Harding’s ex-husband and bodyguard arranged for an attacker to club Kerrigan’s knee with a police baton. But for Janney, it was personal: few know that she was once a serious figure skater herself, sidelined from the sport by a freak accident that occurred when her parents hosted a party.
“There was a game where couples had balloons tied around their ankles and you tried to pop the other couples’ balloons,” said Janney, who portrays Lavona Golden in Craig Gillespie’s “I, Tonya.” “I was cheating, and had my balloon tied around my knee, because I had a strapless long dress on. Cheaters never prosper!

There’s little on screenwriter Steven Rogers’ resume to indicate that he was interested in writing something like “I, Tonya,” the year’s most irreverent – and unexpectedly inspiring – biopic that follows the exploits of one of America’s signature fallen stars. After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September (where Neon and 30West acquired it for 2017 release), the film has steadily picked up awards steam, particularly for the mother-daughter performances of Allison Janney and Margot Robbie, who are both nominated for Critics’ Choice and Indie Spirit awards.
“I’m loving this,” Rogers said with a laugh. “Because you don’t get it on every movie, so when you do get it, you just hold it closely. Never one time, ever, when I started to write about Tonya Harding and Jeff Gillooly, did I think about awards season. The whole experience has been kind of miraculous.”
Rogers isn’t exaggerating.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the saddest show? Which show makes you cry the most? (Old and current shows are all fair game.)
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I just wrote something on this very topic! And I think these are two different questions. Which show makes me cry the most? In the balance across its entire series run? I think the answer has to be “Friday Night Lights.” I’m a sucker for underdog sports stories in general, but “Friday Night Lights” could make me cry in so many different ways, from what happens to Jason Street in the pilot to what Matt Saracen goes through in...

Julia Roberts has a new movie to promote. But since Wonder isn't in theaters until Nov. 17, James Corden wanted to re-promote some of her past projects—26 of them to be exact—on Wednesday's episode of The Late Late Show. Roberts was game to revisit her previous roles—or, to be honest, "as ready as I'm going to get." In under 10 minutes, Corden and Roberts acted out scenes from Notting Hill, Mona Lisa Smile, Larry Crowne, Runaway Bride, Steel Magnolias, Charlie Wilson's War, Mystic Pizza, America's Sweethearts, Eat Pray Love, Closer, Pretty Woman, Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Stepmom, Wonder, Mirror Mirror, Flatliners, Hook, Charlotte's Web, Erin Brockovich,...
