If these New 52 Volume 2s are anything to go by, DC should be called Enemies of Good Comics as Stormwatch, Volume 2: Enemies of Earth, sees the series that started off so promisingly completely drop the ball in just their second outing!
Stormwatch are basically The Authority, a superhero team from the ‘00s featuring Superman/Batman facsimiles Apollo and Midnighter (who’re also gay lovers), Angie the Engineer who’s swapped out her blood for liquid technology enabling her to manifest any machine she can imagine, Jack Hawksmoor who can talk to and control cities, and Jenny Quantum a 12 year old who is the literal manifestation of the zeitgeist or spirit of the age. Also included for some reason is J’onn J’onzz, the Martian Manhunter.

When you think of game soundtracks, there are a few games that personify its importance; most often driving games where radio can be heard (Need For Speed, Grand Theft Auto etc). So it is for this reason that when turning on an epic game like Assassin’s Creed 3, often the soundtrack can be taken for granted. But deep down, we all know what we want to hear the whole time - not the ice cool musings of a gangster rapper, but 100% serious, apocalyptic ‘I’m going to cause some serious medieval carnage’ symphonies. It just sets the tone for the games lofty nature, much like how ‘Out of Touch’ by Hall & Oates really sets the tone for driving around the seedy, 1980s world of GTA: Vice City.
With all of this in mind, the latest in the Assassin’s Creed series has a soundtrack which doesn’t disappoint, managing to...

Just about everything is canceled in New York today thanks to the 75-85 m.p.h. prowess of Hurricane Sandy, and we're already seeing the effects of the storm system's devastation on Twitter: @SalmanRushdie tweeted "Who'd have thought the End of the World would be called Sandy? If this was a movie, would it be played by Olivia Newton-John?" Said musicians Alex and Nat Wolff (@natandalex): "Guys, why is the squirrel from sponge bob having a hurricane tomorrow? Sincerely, someone who still watches spongebob ***Alex***"
This proves only one thing: We need to pick the right pop culture Sandy to officially represent this hurricane once and for all. Here are the best five candidates for the job, ranked fifth to first. And they are:

With the release of Frankenweenie just a few days away, I was invited to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA to talk with stars Charlie Tahan (voice of .Victor.), and Atticus Shaffer(voice of .Edgar “E” Gore.).
From creative genius Tim Burton (.Alice in Wonderland., .The Nightmare Before Christmas..) comes Frankenweenie, a heartwarming tale about a boy and his dog. After unexpectedly losing his beloved dog Sparky, young Victor harnesses the power of science to bring his best friend back to life with just a few minor adjustments. He tries to hide his home-sewn creation, but when Sparky gets out, Victor.s fellow students, teachers and the entire town all learn that getting a new leash on life can be monstrous.
Several members of the press, including myself, sat down with the young actors to talk about their experiences on set. Check out our roundtable discussion below.

It's official: Even a hurricane can't stop The Finder.
Stranded at The Ends of the Earth, Walter and company managed to find the whereabouts of a missing high school girl even as "Eye of the Storm" took it's toll on southern Florida. And it sure made for a rather interesting hour.
I think my favorite part of this episode had to be the unconventional ways in which Walter and the team had to go about tracking down Melissa Welling. I think we all knew from the minute her face flashed on the screen as missing we knew Walter was going to be on the case.
Congrats to the writers for making the pursuit of Melissa at least mildly believable in the midst of a hurricane.
The human search engine idea was brilliant, it was like watching Google Maps hearing them narrow down where the video they found of Melissa's confrontation with Renee was shot.

He tells Kurt hes the greatest wrestler but he was better then threatens to whoop Roode’s ass. “Sorry about your damn…” He’s cut off by Jeff Hardy’s music and the Rainbow Emo himself comes to the ring. “I got screwed at the PPV, I got screwed last week.” He tells Storm nobody gets a shot until he gets his final encounter. Storm says a few months ago He got screwed. “You’d think with all this screwing he’d have a lot of child support to pay.” Before we can digest that thought, Roode comes out with a mic. [1] Last year saw the debut of The Viewfinder List [2], which aims to do for aspiring filmmakers what The Black List does for screenwriters. Compiled from a poll of "studio executives, producers, and creatives," The Viewfinder List reflects the most-liked shorts, commercials, and/or music videos of the year. The inaugural list in 2010 included such up-and-comers as Patrick Jean, whose Pixels is due out in 2013, 47 Ronin director Carl Erik Rinsch, and, um, Alejandro González Iñárritu. This year's list has Dan Trachtenberg's Portal: No Escape on top, along with a few other videos you may recognize if you've been paying attention to /Film for the past year. Or even if you haven't -- that adorable Super Bowl Volkswagen ad with the little Darth Vader kid also made the cut, as did Chris Marrs Piliero's video for The Black Keys. Check out the full 2011 Viewfinder List -- with video! -- after the jump.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
A wise old person once said this – Romana, I think. But even if the Time Lady is attributing the genius of Isaac Newton to punting, never a truer word was spoken when it comes to looking at The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang – or Pandorica Bang as I'll call it, to give me one less headache.
But from a personal point of view, the biggest opposite reaction is what I think of the story. The Pandorica Bang was one of those stories that I couldn't quite make my mind up about. The first time I was disappointed with the result. The second time I actually liked it, despite my reservations – you can see this cringe-inducing gushing somewhere else on Shadowlocked. And so a couple of months later I saw a repeat of it on BBC Three, and actually wondered what the fuss was all about.

After a bit of blabbing about growing up in the South, respect and drinking beer, he brings out his opponent tonight, Bobby Roode. Storm tells him to bring everything he got. Roode thanks him for giving him a second chance in his career by coming up with all the ideas for Beer Money then says tonight they’re going to steal the show.

Recap Sting and Ric Flair having the worst match ever, then Hogan beating down Sting unconvincingly. This is what you would call a “hype” video. But no amount of hype can save where this storyline is going. In the arena here comes the “Insane Icon” Sting in a Hogan t-shirt carrying a clipboard. Which in wrestling either means contract or petition. This time it seems to be a contract as he wants Hogan to the ring. Hogan obliges. Hogan/Flair/Sting. Its like watching WCW in the mid 90s. Hogan says hes not clear to wrestle. Sting shows footage of Hogan beating him down which contradicts that statement. Sting wants to get it on right now but Hogan doesn’t. Instead bring out another mid 90s staple in Eric Bischoff. Sting ignores him completely then decks him.
Backstage, Karen Jarrett is telling a selection of Knockouts about their match tonight.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Eye Of The Storm Trailer I like this kind of story, I do. It's familiar territory, to be sure, but if there's someone who I...

Shooting has just commenced on the Australian musical Goddess at Sydney's Fox Studios. The project's to be directed by Mark Lamprell (co-writer of Babe: Pig in the City and director of My Mother Frank) with actress turned writer, director Judy Morris (co-director of Happy Feet and writer of Fred Schepisi's upcoming Eye of the Storm) here serving as Musical Director. The film's based on a screenplay penned by Lamprell and Joanna Weinberg. Very much in the spirit of feel-good musicals, Lamprell hopes Goddess will find a global audience. "Goddess is a wonderful fairy tale which I hope will resonate with audiences around the world," the director enthuses.

Ben Lovett doesn't make things easy for himself. The frontman, namesake, and driving force behind Lovett has never found himself in need of the services of a record label. So when he finished his first self-published album, Highway Collection, last month, he had a few listening parties. Having worked as a film score composer (for Sundance darling "The Signal" among other movies) he knew a lot of people in the movie industry. As happens at Hollywood parties, soon after he was approached by five different directors about making videos for five separate songs. So he said yes to all of them. And then he thought, there are only nine songs on the album, why not do videos for all of them? After all, just because something is hard is no reason not to do it.
Thus began a collaborative project between Lovett and directors who were willing to work on...

Why Watch? Is it a music video or a short film? Can they be the same thing? The first time I saw this short, I had no idea whether it was supposed to be a video for the band’s song, or if the band was featured heavily for scoring the short. That, to me, is a good sign. The other good sign is that the film looks like Sin City crashed a 1958 Buick Special into Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and forgot to trade insurance cards. The story is engaging in a lonely way, and the score is mellow and trippy. So, maybe it’s a bit of both. Pure short and pure music video. Ain’t nothing wrong with that as long as it’s good. And it’s definitely good. What Will It Cost? Just 5 minutes of your time. Does it get better any better than that? Check...

Hey gang! Check out this awesome stylized steam punk inspired music video for Ben Lovett's Eye of the Storm. The director of the film Chris Alender and producer Kris Eber described the project as “the story of a lonely captain who has to unshackle himself from a troublesome past in order to move on to the next chapter in his life.”

Thanks to Gt reader isaacada1 for the tip!
Here's some detailed information of the making of the video:
The production consisted of a Red (Mx) shoot with Ben Lovett decked out in a fluorescent tape costume against blue screen – and not much else. We were tasked to realize the world around their footage within a total of sixty shots.
We had about twelve weeks to do the work, with two to three artists working at any given time.

Remember the days when music videos were short films? I could be way off on the feeling that they don’t really do this anymore considering that the new home of music videos seems to be YouTube and I can’t go there – it turns into an hour of me looking at old commercials and forgetting, almost immediately, what I went there for to begin with. So yes, there could be music videos as short films (30 Seconds to Mars’ recent “Hurricane” short film directed by Jared Leto himself caused quite a stir) but they’re not as common as I remember and generally, nowhere near this cool.
Eye of the Storm was put together for Lovett’s new single. The story is pretty straight forward – there’s only so much you can do in five minutes – but it’s effective and beautiful. It’s set in a “stylized steampunk world...

[1] /Film reader Courtney M pointed us to this striking music video for Ben Lovett's "Eye of the Storm." Against a melancholy acoustic tune, a solitary pilot wanders through his steampunk airship, tossing out remnants of his old life in order to begin anew. It looks like something out of Sin City, or an anime series. And yes, a storm is involved at one point. Even more interesting than the video itself, however, are the behind-the-scenes footage and VFX progression reel that were posted by Soapbox Films. Check it all out after the jump. Lovett [2] is an Atlantan musician and composer. He's written the soundtracks of several films, including Last Goodbye, The Signal and The Last Lullaby -- the last of which won him Best Score at the Brooklyn International Film Festival. "Eye of the Storm" is Lovett's second music video from his album Highway Collection, due out March 15. (You can watch the other video,...

Kaboom
Opens: 2011
Cast: Thomas Dekker, Haley Bennett, Juno Temple, Kelly Lynch, James Duval
Director: Gregg Araki
Summary: Smith's everyday life in the dorm - hanging out with his arty, sarcastic best friend Stella, hooking up with a beautiful free spirit named London, lusting for his gorgeous but dim surfer roommate Thor - all gets turned upside-down after one fateful, terrifying night.
Analysis: A year after "Thelma and Louise" came "The Living End", an independent film which had a similar premise but made the protagonists two gay HIV+ men. It was raw, intense and signalled the arrival of a new talent in the form of filmmaker Gregg Araki. In the subsequent two decades, he's delivered several trippy films involving young, good-looking omnisexual people having lots of graphic sex and dealing with some wacky cobbled together plot shenanigans.
The tone has ranged the light-hearted "Splendor" and "Nowhere" to the darker "Mysterious Skin...

The 4th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival, which runs for three days on Sept. 9-11, will screen about 10 features from all over the world and a veritable ton of short films from even further out there.
The fest will open with the latest documentary by a Hollywood icon. It’s Oliver Stone’s South of the Border, which has the director meeting with South American politicians and dignitaries. (The film opened to mixed reviews here in the States earlier this year.) Also screening is Trash Humpers, the latest film by indie rabble-rouser Harmony Korine, which has been confounding audiences on the indie film fest circuit, and Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void, which has been earning rave reviews.
The rest of the features in the lineup are an eclectic, oddball concoction, including Mladen Djordjevic‘s Serbian atrocity Life and Death of a Porno Gang, Victor Nieuwenhuijs and Maartje Seyferth’s twisted Netherlands tale Meat,...

A film festival isn't just a way to see movies; it is, inevitably, a film festival. If you show a hundred or so features, even if they're picked at random, they will seem to form patterns, echo one another, one-up each other in certain respects to even a casual viewer. What was a single movie one day might, the next day, appear the superior or inferior version of another. That, maybe even more than the opportunity to see films, might be the heart of festival-going. It's like the appeal of city life; the great thing about cities isn't how much you can find in them, but how much happens in going from one desitination to the next. One inevitably compares. So while on Saturday, Frederic Mermoud's Partners, which intercut a Gilbert Melki / Emmanuelle Devos policier in gray and brown with a mild case of l'amour fou in red and gold,...

Leading up to the Oscars on Feb. 22, we will be highlighting the nominated films that have appeared in the magazine or on the Website in the last year. Howard Feinstein interviewed Trouble The Water directors Tia Lessin and Carl Deal for our Summer '08 issue as well as the film's subjects, Kim and Scott Rivers, in a sidebar to the piece. Trouble The Water is nominated for Best Documentary. Brooklynites Tia Lessin and Carl Deal had the near-perfect recipe for what I consider the near-perfect documentary: a unique situation, inimitable subjects, a strong but non-didactic political thrust and that most elusive of ingredients, serendipity. Shocked at the government’s inaction and ineptitude after Katrina, the filmmaking couple went...
