Her incandescent beauty, innocent sensuality, and effervescent persona still send hearts aflutter and earned her the sobriquet of “Venus of Indian films”, but Madhubala’s enigmatic and beguiling smile and charm masked a lifetime of pain and suffering.
Madhubala, who passed away on this day (February 23) in 1969, earned tributes that have rarely been matched, leave alone surpassed.
She acted in a film named after her when she was not even midway through her career, was being copied or parodied when she was still acting, and is possibly the only Indian, film or otherwise, with a song dedicated to her being played at the Olympics.
She was also compared to the near-contemporary Marilyn Monroe – the two would pass away within a few years of each other, both aged 36, but did not welcome this as she did not consider herself a sex symbol.

She had a film named after her even before she hit her career’s peak, was being parodied when she was still active, and is the only Indian film actress who has a song to her played at the Olympics. That was the spell of Madhubala, whose angelic features, beguiling yet enigmatic smile, and incandescent beauty, coupled with her restrained but undeniable talent, made her part of some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films.
While she is imprinted in the hearts and minds of film-watchers as the winsome, entrancing but star-crossed Anarkali of “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), as the entrancing nightclub singer in “Howrah Bridge”, and for her exuberant, effusive, and elfin charm in romantic comedies “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958), “Jhumroo” (1961) and “Half Ticket” (1962), she left her mark across film genres from ghost/gothic stories to comic crime capers to film noir, beyond the usual romantic dramas in a relatively short career.

Directed by Ram Ramesh Sharma
“Chutiyon se bhara padaa hai yeh ghar,” Vijay Raaz observes midway through this mishmash of the worse and the worst. That Subhash Ghai should come to this is a tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.
Not that anyone in this , hands-down Ghai’s worst production to date, has ever heard of Shakespeare. The characters are a bunch of buffoons and clowns , titivated with no redeeming qualities except that they can keep a straight face even when confronted with one of the dumbest most witless screenplays that actors have ever been given to read ever seen the motion picture was invented.
If Lumiere were to see what his dream has come to , he would slash his wrist.

The trailer of Ak vs Ak is out now, and while the audience is loving the style of Anil Kapoor, his co-star Anurag Kashyap, a popular director, is getting lauded for his acting skills too.
Ak vs Ak is not Anurag's first film as an actor, and he certainly is not the first Bollywood director to come in front of the camera.
Here's a list of present day directors who took on the challenge of being an actor for their own films or others':
Anurag Kashyap
He will be seen as a filmmaker who kidnaps the daughter of a filmstar in Vikramaditya Motwane's upcoming film "Ak vs Ak". He had also appeared as a cop in "Ghoomketu" directed by Pushpendra Nath Misra. Prior to this, he had acted as corrupt police officer, Acp Rane, in "Akira", directed by Ar Murugadoss. "I am ugly" -- this was Shah Rukh Khan's reaction when he saw himself on the screen for the first time, and decided to ditch his plan to get into acting. The superstar says he still has a "hard time" believing his rise to fame, and says he doesn't think of himself as a "star".
"I don't want to show off but I am genuinely a dream come true. I am a lower middle class boy, an orphan, who got into the city of glamour, became a movie star and the world showered me with love. This only happens in dreams. I never thought of it, Shah Rukh said at an event here.

Last year, the Academy documentary branch had to grapple with a record 170 documentary feature submissions for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. This year, it’s not so bad: only 166 were entered. The short list of 15 will be announced, along with eight others for the first time on a single date this year: December 17.
All year, branch members have been getting lists of secure online screeners available to watch on the Academy website, increasing in volume until last month, when they received a batch of 77, with more to come. It’s a burden to watch them all, so the ones with the most attention move to the top of the much-watch list. Give the advantage to early box office hits that were made available in the summer such as “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?,” “Rbg,” and “Three Identical Strangers,” as well as September’s list including critically hailed “Dark Money,...

A whopping 166 documentary features have been submitted to the academy for consideration at the 2019 Oscars. That is down by four from last year’s record 170 submissions. Among these contenders are all of the highest grossing documentaries of the year including “Free Solo,” “Rbg” and “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
To winnow the entries down to the 15 semi-finalists that will be announced on December 17, the academy is sending monthly packages of the newly eligible documentary feature screeners to all 400 or so members of the documentary branch. While all members are encouraged to watch as many of these as they can, one-fifth of the voters are assigned each title. In late November, each branch member will submit a preferential ballot listing their top 15 choices.

Among the films on the list are Michael Moore’s anti-Trump polemic “Fahrenheit 11/9,” as well as CNN Films’ Ruth Bader Ginsburg biography “Rbg” and Focus’ Mister Rogers retrospective “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”

For those who thought Vicky Kaushal’s Masaan act last year was just a one-off flash in the pan affair, Zubaan is an eye-opener. Kaushal plays Dilsher, the waylaid Sikh boy from Gurdaspur who only wants to be successful in ways that we normally describe success. So he schemes his way into the heart mind home and property of a business tycoon Sikand (Manish Chaudhary, exuding arrogant power the way Amrish Puri did in Subhash Ghai’s Pardes) ends up getting what he thinks he wants.
From here onwards first-time director Mozez Singh (who must be kidding about being a debutant, which first-timer would be able to make film so confident and compelling??!!) charts Dilsher’s descent into a selfserving opportunism and then his sudden swerve into redemption. This journey back and forth on the scale of morality has been undertaken repeatedly in films as far-ranging as Raman Kumar’s...

Is it possible for a superstar with a larger-than-life image to play an ordinary man? Shah Rukh Khan did it in Ashutosh Gowariker's Pardes.
Now it's Ajay Devgn's turn.
Drishyam, the remake of the spectacularly successful film of the same title in Malayalam and Tamil, finds Ajay Devgn donning the mantel of the working class man whose only ambition in life is to keep his family protected from external violation.
The film's very astute director Nishikant kamat says it wasn't at all difficult to get Devgn to abandon his bare-torsoed super-hero's image. "This is Ajay's only film where he hasn't even planted a slap on anyone's cheek. There is absolutely no larger-than-life antics here. Luckily Ajay and I were on the same page from the start. He completely surrendered to his character."
The director and his leading man together worked on Ajay's character's looks. "The clothes, the bicycle he rides on,...

"This is Ajay's only film where he hasn't even planted a slap on anyone's cheek. There is absolutely no larger-than-life antics here. Luckily Ajay and I were on the same page from the start. He completely surrendered to his character."

Once upon a time there lived a showman. He delivered films on larger than life canvases with heroic characters, melodramatic situations, grandiose dialogues and soul stirring music. We fondly recall the man who gave us iconic films like Karz, Ram-Lakhan, Saudagar, Pardes and many more! Sadly the showman never quite understood the evolution that happened to Indian cinema. He struggled to appeal to the changing tastes, the new generation’s demands and new age storytelling that Indian cinema had adopted. Today he continues to force the audiences to re-visit the style of cinema that once landed him with blockbusters however time and time again he gets rejected. Last Friday he tried again. And sadly last Friday, he failed again.

New Delhi, Jan 8: Time was when Bollywood films revolving round 'pardesi' heroes, heroines or families ruled the roost. But such subjects have been elbowed out by desi movies with desi heroes of late, but industry experts say the trend will return.
If you remember, in the 1970s Manoj Kumar's "Purab Aur Pachhim" portrayed the dilemma of NRIs and it turned out to be a blockbuster.

Mumbai, April 11: Mahima Chaudhary, who made her debut with Subhash Ghai's 1997-superhit "Pardes", admits filmdom has undergone a sea change and that funding has become structured.
"The biggest change is that production has become organised, there is proper funding," she said, adding that "it is more more secure".
"Earlier, some people used to put in their money and if the money is not enough, it would go down the drain. The second instalment used to take a lot of time," the 39-year-old told reporters Wednesday at a photo shoot for a shampoo brand.
She feels that organised funding helps in planning "a film of any.
