All that glitters certainly isn’t gold, as “Glitter” cinematographer Geoffrey Simpson knows all too well. During a recent interview, Simpson told IndieWire that the newfound cult fandom around Mariah Carey’s 2001 film debut is staggering, as “Glitter” is “one of the 10 worst movies.” The “Center Stage” and “Under the Tuscan Sun” director of photography looked back on the feature that was released September 21, 2001 — after its soundtrack came out on 9/11.
In the film, Carey stars as a young singer who overcomes an abusive childhood to reach stardom alongside a toxic boyfriend. “Glitter” was directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall and cleared $5.3 million at the global box office against a $22 million budget. Carey developed the story behind “Glitter” with “What’s Love Got to Do with It” screenwriter Kate Lanier and playwright Cheryl L. West. Padma Lakshmi, Eric Benét, Max Bessley, Terence Howard, and Da Brat also starred.

If “Barbie” tells us anything, it’s that a movie doesn’t have to be gay to be, well, gay. So what makes a movie gay if it isn’t explicitly? Cast a few top-shelf gay icons in there — your Bette Middlers, your Joan Crawfords, your Faye Dunaways playing Joan Crawford — and especially have them reparteeing bitchy lines tearing each other to pieces, and have an aesthetic that’s outre and unironically camp, and you’ve got the winning-formula starter-pack for something deliciously fabulous and queer, even if not by intentional design.
Some films have gotten swept up into the queer canon by virtue of their unintentional awfulness or arguable quality while others actually push forward the cinematic medium to create something that stands the tests of time and the weathers of queer folks and their mercurial tastes. Robert Zemeckis’ Oscar-winning “Death Becomes Her” boasts the double whammy of Meryl Streep...

When HBO’s “The Idol” premiered to a resounding “ugh, really?” from the general public last month, there was a specific label people were quick to apply to the series: vanity project. Who the show was a vanity project for depended on which creator was being complained about at the time. But haters of the instantly despised pop star erotic thriller were practically universal in their assessment that the show was an ego stroke for star The Weeknd and/or series director Sam Levinson: both of whom took their lashings over the course of the show’s five-episode run.
The pair clearly had sky high hopes for the series, to the point that it received a rare TV premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 before its broadcast debut in June. That was criticized by many as a deeply egotistical push, but its inclusion at the festival did...

Mariah Carey is famous for topping the charts. In fact, she holds the record for the most number-one hits by a solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 (19), and she became the first artist ever to hit number-one in four different decades. But of course no one can send every song they’ve recorded to the top of the charts. A number of Carey’s greatest hits didn’t reach the summit, but they belong in any discussion of her storied career. Scroll down for our countdown of her best non-chart-toppers.
Early in her career it was hard to find Carey singles anywhere but number-one. The first four from her very first album reached that position. The 1990s continued at that same pace: a whopping 14 of her chart leaders were released in that decade. The 2000s were less auspicious for her: she had career and tabloid trouble when her movie “Glitter” and its accompanying soundtrack underperformed.

No surprises here: HBO's phenomenon "Euphoria" has been renewed for a third season. The intense and stylish teen series is currently midway through its eight-episode second season.

Despite over two years of downtime between its first and second seasons, "Euphoria" broke HBO Max records with its second season premiere, and has only continued to gain momentum since. The series, which is led by Zendaya, has all but taken over social media on Sunday nights in a way few HBO shows have since "Game of Thrones" ended. HBO reports...

The sports film, in general, is fairly formulaic irrespective of gender. It’s one of the more reliable genres, able to entertain even if the beats are standard operating procedure. When it comes to sports films featuring women, there are slight distinctions, namely in what the sport is and what role men play within it. For Halle Berry, making her directorial debut with the Mma film “Bruised,” she wanted to make the movie female-heavy, both in front of and behind the camera, and it creates pockets of distinction in which it stands out from the sports features that have come before it.
Jackie Justice (Berry) was once a top Mma fighter for the UFC. But when she jumped out of a cage during a match, the disgrace ruined her career. Four years later, Jackie is moving from job to job with little to show for it outside of an abusive boyfriend/manager,...

If it's been your fantasy to learn what really went on behind the scenes of the movie Glitter, we're about to come along and be your hero. Mariah Carey's infamous film, centering on a down-on-her-luck singer in the 1980s who discovers her big break in the music industry isn't all it's cracked up to be, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Sept. 21, 2001 theatrical release. If you know anything about Glitter, you probably know it didn't quite hit the high notes its team had hoped to achieve. The star, who would go on to impress critics with her acting chops in 2009's Precious, helped develop Glitter as her first lead acting role. "It's really not...

Some artists surround themselves with managers and consultants, and strategize for months on how to get their album to the top of the charts. Mariah Carey hit Number One while she was sleeping.
On Monday, Carey’s eleventh studio album, E=MC2, shot to the top of the iTunes album chart, after a fan-generated hashtag calling for #JusticeforEMC2 began trending on Twitter overnight. The album, released in 2008, slowly re-entered the iTunes 200, ascending the list and peaking at the top spot by the time Carey woke up Monday morning.

A review of this week’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, “Admiral Peralta,” coming up just as soon as I watch the show about the karate lizards…
Jake Peralta’s daddy issues are perhaps his most defining character trait (it’s that or his love of Die Hard). But Brooklyn has usually been more comically successful when exploring that issue indirectly, whether it’s through Captain Holt becoming Jake’s surrogate father or Jake’s concerns about having kids. Episodes featuring Bradley Whitford as Roger Peralta himself have tended to be a mixed bag.

Lifetime saw V.C. Andrews’s Casteel Family movie series ranking as cable’s #2 new drama series among W25-54* for 2019. Now, the network will expand its footprint within the writer’s universe by greenlighting a five movie series based on the Ruby Landry novels.
The first of the five new original movies, V.C. Andrews’ Ruby, will star Australian twins Raechelle Banno as “Ruby” and Karina Banno as “Giselle.”
Watched over by her loving Grandmère Catherine, Ruby Landry is filled with hope as love blooms with her high school sweetheart Paul Tate. Lorena Bobbitt’s story is getting the biopic treatment.
Lifetime has greenlit “I Was Lorena Bobbitt,” a feature about the woman who became a household name and made tabloid headlines when she cut off her husband’s penis with a knife in 1993 after years of abuse.
Bobbitt was the subject of a Jordan Peele-produced Amazon docuseries which came out less than a year ago, and this new retelling has Bobbitt herself on board as an executive producer. Casting on the project is underway and production will begin later this month. The film, announced by A+E Networks president of programming Rob Sharenow at Lifetime’s Television Critics’ Association winter tour press day, will follow Bobbitt’s “journey from a wide-eyed, immigrant bride to a battered wife into an unlikely media sensation.”

Joker is smashing all sorts of box office records on its way to awards season, but the film’s rise to prominence hasn’t come without its fair share of controversies. The most recent scandal involves the use of a song that was performed by a convicted pedophile. People feared that the creep known as Gary Glitter would be profiting off of the movie’s use of his popular track but thankfully, we now know that the criminal won’t be making a dime.
A representative from Snapper Music recently released a statement saying the following:
“Gary Glitter does not get paid. We’ve had no contact with him.”
Universal Media Publishing, who holds the United States’ rights to the song in question, also echoed the sentiment by saying:
“Gary Glitter’s publishing interest in the copyright of his songs is owned by Umpg and other parties, therefore Umpg does...

Joker continues to break October records, but a new report suggests some of that money may go to convicted child abuser Gary Glitter.
Todd Phillips’ Joker is enjoying the biggest opening rollout in October movie history. Opening at what is now officially $96 million—above the $93.5 million Warner Bros. estimated on Sunday—the picture surpassed last year’s Venom for the opening weekend record and would appear to prove that hard R-rated content and adult character studies can still do massive business… at least so long as they are attached to familiar intellectual property like the Clown Prince of Crime.
While we tend to think Joker earns its stripes, thanks in large part to actor Joaquin Phoenix’s haunting work, there has been controversy swirling around the film ever since its first trailer dropped. And it’s only grown more pronounced after it took home the Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival.

“Joker” has been hit with a new round of backlash following its record-breaking $96 million debut at the October box office. As reported by CNBC, the film’s use of Gary Glitter’s 1972 anthem “Rock and Roll Part 2” is courting controversy because Glitter is a convicted pedophile. Glitter began a 16-year prison sentence in 2015 for attempted rape, indecent assault, and having sex with a girl under the age of 13 years old. Glitter’s crimes were committed in the 1970s and 1980s. The rock singer was previously jailed in 1999 for possessing images of child abuse.
CNBC journalist Sam Meredith reports, “Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, is reportedly expected to receive a lump sum for allowing the recording to be used in ‘Joker.’ He is also thought to be in line for music royalties depending on the success of movie theater ticket sales, DVD sales and film soundtrack sales.’

Mariah Carey is one of the most successful recording artists in recent history with more chart-topping singles than any other solo artist in Billboard history. You’d think she’d have a truck full of Grammys too, but the recording academy has actually been fairly stingy to her over the years. She has only won 5 awards out of 34 nominations, and only one of those was in the general field. Can she finally win Album of the Year in 2020 for “Caution“?
Carey’s general field victory came in 1991 when she claimed Best New Artist. That year she also won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Vision of Love,” but she lost her other three general field bids: Record and Song of the Year for “Vision” and Album of the Year for her self-titled debut.

Charly Bliss’s 2017 debut Guppy was the kind of alt-rock charmer that keeps revealing secrets and pleasures beyond its tough, shiny exterior. The songs mixed chugging Breeders riffs and vintage-Weezer poo-metal, a popular retro-rock formula they nailed with uniquely uncanny precision. But the big revelation was helium-voiced singer Eva Hendricks’ ability to expunge deep anxieties while still seeming sharp and in-control. “Ruby” was a Nirvana-strength ode to her shrink; “Glitter” was a radiant guitar-gusher about the emotionally crinkly subject of dating someone who weirded you out by reminding you of yourself.

070 Shake‘s voice was often the saving grace of G.O.O.D. Music’s uneven five weeks, five albums experiment of 2018. Her pained and hollowed wail on “Ghost Town” is the emotional climax of Ye. During Pusha T’s “Santeria,” her eerie and emotionless delivery launches the listener into the Virginia rapper’s brutal, final verse. Her brief warble on Nas’s “Not For Radio” was one of the most interesting moments on a listless project from the aging rapper.

Is the 15th time the charm? That’s how many studio albums Mariah Carey has released now that she has dropped her latest effort, “Caution.” Released on November 16, it’s her first album in four years, but it looks like it might have been worth the wait. The reviews are in, and they’re some of the best of her career.
As of this writing “Caution” has a MetaCritic score of 85 based on seven reviews. That’s Mc’s best Mc score ever, though the review aggregator only dates back as far as her notorious 2001 disappointment “Glitter.” But it’s still significant for an artist who even in her prime dominated the charts a lot more than critics’ hearts. And it’s more than 20 points better than the score critics gave her for “The Emancipation of Mimi” (2005), which was her comeback following significant turbulence in her career and personal life.

Mariah Carey stopped by Genius HQ on Wednesday night to sit down and discuss the evolution of her songwriting over the course of her career. Carey released her 15th studio album Caution today.

It's a good time to be Mariah Carey. The holiday season's officially kicked off thanks to her seminal track "All I Want for Christmas Is You" making its annual return to the charts. Her album Glitter, the soundtrack to her much-maligned 2001 film, has miraculously reached No. 1 on iTunes, nearly two decades after its release. Her 15th studio album, Caution—her first in four years following the iconic and insanely entitled Me. I Am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse—dropped on Friday, Nov. 16. She remains boo'd up with boyfriend, backup dancer Bryan Tanaka. Once again, it's finally feels like the Celebration of Mimi. And for a minute, it looked like we might not make...

In 2001, it seemed like Mariah Carey’s career was over. Though originally intended to be a victory lap for one of the best-selling musicians of all time, the musical rom-com Glitter turned into a public mess. Bizarre promotional appearances and a brief hospitalization (both of which she has since linked back to a bipolar disorder diagnosis from that same year) pushed the soundtrack from its original date of August 21st to September 11th — one of the darkest days in American history. At that point, it was her lowest-selling album, and,...

Justice for Glitter has finally been served. It was nearly two decades ago that Mariah Carey's ill-fated film, Glitter, and accompanying album of the same name were released. As the story goes, the musical drama was a big flop, tanking at the box office and panned by critics. It was a difficult time for the star personally as she had been hospitalized for what was a described as a "physical and emotional breakdown" two months earlier. It was also a tragic time in the United States, as the film came out shortly after the September 11th terrorist attacks. In regard to the album, it was Carey's least commercially successful one at the time and peaked at number seven on the...

Lady Gaga can’t shake her character from “A Star Is Born.” And she doesn’t want to. “I feel Ally inside of me,” Gaga says of the rising musical icon she plays in the film. “I wonder how long she’ll stay. Or if she’ll be in there forever.”
This symbiotic relationship is evident at her Variety photo shoot at her home in Malibu, a week before she had to evacuate due to the Woolsey Fire. Gaga isn’t sure what she’ll wear at first. Inspiration strikes after she slips on a taupe men’s collared shirt. It is the same shirt, she reveals, worn in several key scenes by her co-star Bradley Cooper as the singing heartthrob Jackson Maine in “A Star Is Born.” Later in the film, Ally inherits the garment. Can Mariah Carey revitalize her career again? She’s one of the best-selling artists in music history dating back almost 30 years, though with a few rough patches along the way. Now she’s proceeding with “Caution” — that’s the title of her recently announced 15th studio album, which is scheduled for release on November 16.
Carey was an unstoppable force throughout the 1990s with a string of seven multi-platinum albums, including two that achieved diamond certification: “Music Box” (1993) and “Daydream” (1995). But then came “Glitter,” the 2001 album that accompanied her critically panned film of the same name. Though it still went platinum, it was a disappointment relative to her past hits. She ended up with a Razzie Award for the film and was dropped by her label, Virgin Records.

To a much greater degree than their male counterparts, many of music’s top female singers have attempted to make the leap into the next frontier: acting. Yet only a few have managed to sustain major screen careers.
Does Lady Gaga possess the thespian talent to pull it off? She already has a Golden Globe for “American Horror Story” to go along with her six Grammys. Now, with her first starring role in a feature film, the just-opened fourth remake of “A Star Is Born,” she’s on the edge of potential Oscar glory.
You could say the true test of potential staying power for female singers has been the screen test. Doris Day aced hers in the golden age of Hollywood, and so, in the rock era, did Cher, after several flubs (including the 1969 flop “Chastity”). Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler both started in the theater but became famous...

“A Star Is Born” opens this weekend as one of the most anticipated releases of 2018. The film’s title may as well refer to its lead actress, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Lady Gaga, whose previous movie experience came from brief appearances in two Robert Rodriguez films. Her reviews are rapturous and she’s a leading contender for a Best Actress Oscar nomination, all of which could make her the biggest singing crossover since Barbra Streisand.

While there are several guest appearances on Kanye West’s new album “Ye,” New Jersey-reared 070 Shake — a.k.a. Danielle Balbuena — is arguably the breakout star thanks to her appearance on the song “Ghost Town,” which many critics have called the set’s best.
