If you’ve lurked on the internet in recent months, you might’ve noticed Celine Dion’s name more often than usual. First was the singer’s saddening news about an illness she’s been facing. Second was the discourse around Rolling Stone’s Greatest Vocalists of All Time list, which weirdly omitted Dion. Dion’s exclusion left many angry at the publication, especially given how storied her career has been. Throughout the decades, she has cemented herself as one of the biggest voices of her generation and has earned countless accolades. Perhaps the biggest of those was her Grammy win for Album of the Year in 1997 for her classic record “Falling into You.”

Yet the songwriter doesn’t appear to be bitter about it — and actually maintains a sense of humor about the dubious honor. Now, she’s at it again with her 14th career nom for the track “Applause,” via the film “Tell It Like a Woman.”
On this episode of the award-winning Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, we sit down with Warren to talk about her stunning career as a songwriter who’s worked with the talents of Cher, Lady Gaga and Aerosmith. The 14 Oscar nominations Alex North received for his film scores between 1952 and 1985 make him one of the most-recognized composers in academy history, but also one of the most overlooked, as all of his outings were unsuccessful. He did, however, earn the organization’s esteem in 1986 as the recipient of an honorary Oscar – the first given to an artist in his music field. Now, the academy’s board of governors have chosen to fill in another blank space by making Diane Warren the first songwriter on their list of honorary awardees. After 13 unfortunate Best Original Song losses, the time has finally come for the perennial contender to have her day in the sun.

Shay Mitchell is staying busy. The early months of 2022 have seen Mitchell’s return for Season 2 of Hulu’s “Dollface” as well as this January’s premiere of “The Cleaning Lady,” the Fox drama for which she acts as executive producer. Her personal life has also seen changes: Mitchell recently announced her second pregnancy in a heartfelt post that also commemorated her grandmother, who’d died the week before.
In Season 2 of “Dollface,” Mitchell returns as Stella — the carefree siren of spontaneity, who has an expansive codex of life experiences. After deciding at the end of last season to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams at business school, she lands a dull internship in a workplace unwilling to take her seriously. Soon, she finds herself confiding to local dive bar owner Liv (Lilly Singh) and pitches an ambitious idea: rebuild Liv’s struggling bar into something catered specifically toward women. Joan Didion, the journalist, novelist, and screenwriter of such films as the 1976 “A Star Is Born” died Thursday at her home in Manhattan at the age of 87. The New York Times reported that the cause was Parkinson’s disease.
Didion was born in Sacramento in 1934. The fifth-generation Californian found some of her most important material for her earliest writing in the culture and chaos of her home state. Joan Didion, the author revered for her coolly dispassionate essays and novels such as “Play It as It Lays,” has died, her publisher confirmed to The New York Times on Wednesday. She was 87. Along with her late husband John Gregory Dunne, Didion co-wrote screenplays for the films “True Confessions,” “A Star Is Born,” “The Panic in Needle Park” and “Up Close and Personal.”
It was the 1968 essay collection “Slouching Towards Bethlehem” and 1970 novel “Play It as It Lays,” which she also adapted for a 1972 film, that secured her reputation as a sharp-eyed observer of the culture and people of California and beyond.
Another essay collection, 1979’s “The White Album,” assembled from her pieces in Esquire and other magazines, took on subjects that defined the era such as Charles Manson and the Doors, further cementing her place as one of the foremost chroniclers of the tumultuous ’60s and ’70s.

Prolific composer Diane Warren has written nine number one songs and had 32 tunes hit the Top Ten on the Billboard Charts. She has won a Grammy, an Emmy, a Golden Globe and three consecutive Billboard Music Awards for Songwriter of the Year. She’s also be named ASCAP’s Writer of the Year three times and was inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame in 2001. But one honor that has eluded her is the Academy Award. Though she hasn’t reach Susan Lucci territory (she finally won an Emmy for “All My Children” on her 19th nomination) Warren has been a bridesmaid at the Oscars 11 times.
But she may well win this year for her wistful ballad “Io Si (Seen)” from the Italian-language Netflix drama “The Life Ahead,” which begins streaming Nov. 13. Laura Pausini, who recorded the song, co-wrote the Italian lyrics with Niccolo Agliardi.

Diane Warren hopes that her song “I’m Standing With You” from “Breakthrough” will “speak to” the audience, and let them know that “somebody’s always standing with them.” The prolific songwriter spoke about her original tune from the 20th Century Fox release in a new behind-the-scenes featurette. Directed by Roxann Dawson, it tells the true story of a 14-year-old boy (Marcel Ruiz) who was pronounced dead after drowning in a lake before his faithful mother (Crissy Metz) prayed him back to life. In addition to starring in the film, Metz also sings the uplifting melody, and admits to being a little nervous about pulling it off. Being a life-long fan of Warren’s, she wanted to “make this beautiful, big song authentic and real.”
For her part, Warren hoped to “capture” what it feels like “to know someone is on your side.
