It might be hard to believe, but it has been 30 years since the world lost one of the most beloved screen presences in modern times, John Candy. And while we can honor his too-short life and career by watching some of his greatest movies, we’ll never get to experience what his children did. But they are at least letting fans in on their personal feelings for their father, who died on March 4th, 1994.
Posting on her personal Instagram, John Candy’s eldest daughter Jennifer shared a photo of the two with the caption, “30 years ago today … feels like both a lifetime with and without you . Miss you and love you always”, along with a heart emoji. Jennifer had previously said, “He was your everyday kind of guy and a great dad and very lovable…Very much similar to characters that he was on film.”

We all remember John Candy as one of the most lovable comedians to have ever stepped in front of the screen. So rare were his dramatic performances that many might be hard-pressed to name any (he really only dipped his toe through JFK and Only the Lonely). But if Stephen King had gotten his way, Candy would have starred in Thinner, which is about a man who gets a curse placed upon him that causes him to lose weight at a deadly rate.
As noted on the commentary track of Shout! Factory’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Thinner (via CinemaBlend), producer Mitchell Galin revealed that King had the idea to cast Candy as Billy Halleck. However, there might have been an ulterior motive, but, jokingly, King pitched it. “We did reach out to [John] Candy’s people. Steve’s comment was like, ‘We’ll pay him a nice chunk of money,...

Actor Joe Mantegna has previously recorded a commentary for the 1996 Stephen King adaptation Thinner with the film’s director Tom Holland (whose other credits include Fright Night and Child’s Play)… but that didn’t stop him from sitting down to record a new commentary for Scream Factory’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Thinner! This time, Mantegna was joined by producer Mitchell Galin – and we’ll get to hear what they had to say about Thinner when the Blu-ray is released on January 23rd. Copies are available for pre-order through the Scream Factory website and on Amazon.

This is Stephen King’s second go around on the show and while Silver Bullet based on Cycle of the Werewolf is a minor cult classic, it’s not one of the bigger adaptations out of his overall catalogue. Tom Holland (not the one who plays Spider-Man) was best known as an actor when he was hired to write the screenplay for a project that sounded like an insane idea: a 23-years-later sequel to the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho. But somehow, Holland and director Richard Franklin managed to deliver a Psycho II (watch it Here) that is a worthy follow-up to the original. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the film, Holland has published – through Holland House Entertainment – a 176 page book called Oh Mother, What Have You Done?, which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Psycho II.
Authored by Tom Holland and containing unpublished memoirs by late Psycho II director Richard Franklin and conversations with the film’s editor Andrew London, Oh Mother, What Have You Done? offers fans a unique
glimpse into the continuation of the beloved Psycho film franchise, which created nightmares for millions of
people showering worldwide.

Evil, as conceived by Stephen King, is an inexorable force as old as the world itself. It exists in countless forms, some of which can be staved off for a time but none of which can be extinguished permanently. It’s as much a part of the earth as it is a part of us, and it persists in a way none of us can or will.
The best adaptations of King’s work get under the skin as they force you to reckon with such ideas, staying with you in much the same way his books do. “Pet Sematary: Bloodlines” is not one of those adaptations. On a scale from “Thinner” to “The Shining,” it falls in the bottom half alongside the likes of last year’s “Firestarter” remake. “Who asked for this?” is the question such projects invoke, and Lindsey Anderson Beer’s film never comes up with a satisfying answer.

In an upcoming video, we will be looking at the modern genre classic Vfw. I say genre because while my wife astutely pointed out that the drugged-up gang in Vfw kind of act like rage zombies and the movie has that great over the top gore and characters, its not really horror. Its gritty action like the movie that inspires it, Assault on Precinct 13. Genre encompasses multiple things like horror, exploitation, and any other type of movie that just has that feel to it. While today’s movie isn’t horror, though it does have situations that would be scary in real life, it is genre. It’s school-ploitation at its finest and has a pedigree both in front...

Remakes: they used to be rare and few in between, but at this point, they are a dime a dozen, with just about any movie being up for a remake, especially in the horror genre. One remake that fans of the original were not happy about seeing it being made was that of Fright Night. The original film was released in 1985 and has become a classic to horror fans, one they love to return to and quote. It’s got that perfect balance of horror and comedy with fun performances, good music, rad effects, and everything a horror movie of the mid-1980s needed. Then, the remake happened. Intro: There’s a scene, roughly half way through the much maligned Robocop 3, in which the eponymous law enforcer is malfunctioning, battered and bruised, which is almost the perfect metaphor for the franchise at this point. As outlined in our previous video in this series, Robocop 2 may have had its fair share of issues, but alongside the annoying characters and a frustratingly dumbed down hero, it’s actually a pretty decent movie. It was just nowhere near the sequel it could so easily have been. Which leads us to part three, which is, well…Where do we start? Historically, in the wonderful world of movies in which we all often reside, part three’s, and later sequels to popular franchises, have that nagging tendency to Look like they should, but for the most part, this familiarity leads to something so very, very…Wrong! Many of Stephen King’s horror works, including novels and short stories, have turned into movie adaptations. Some were highly successful, namely the It two-parter. Some others, such as Thinner and The Night Flier, were straight-out fiascos. This year, director Rob Savage adapted King’s 1973 short story The Boogeyman into a feature movie with A Quiet Place screenwriting duo Scott Beck and Bryan Woods alongside Black Swan‘s Mark Heyman. The movie stars Sophie Thatcher and Vivien Lyra Blair as the Harper sisters. They are still reeling from the recent death of their mother in an automobile accident. After their father, Will...

With Blaze back on the shelf, the Losers have finished their Richard Bachman run. To cap it off, they do what any self-respecting Constant Reader would do: argue and rank all seven of his novels. To recap, that includes: 1977’s Rage, 1979’s The Long Walk, 1981’s Roadwork, 1982’s The Running Man, 1984’s Thinner, 1996’s The Regulators, and 2007’s Blaze.
“Wait, fellas, who is this Richard Bachman,” you say? Hey, it’s a fair question, and for those in the dark, Bachman is the late pseudonym for world renown author Stephen King. Still lost? Good news: We’ve got an exhaustive primer episode on King’s alter ego that offers an A-to-z account of the fictional author. You can get it now in The Barrens (Patreon).

Since the release of Stephen King's novel "Carrie" in 1974, the author has been one of the most famous American horror writers of all time. In his long career, he has created homicidal cars, psychotic clowns, and obsessive fans. King's macabre stories always keep avid readers entertained, and his characters and plots are often adapted into films and television shows.
Since Brian De Palma adapted "Carrie" in 1976, which has become a horror classic, King's novels have inspired dozens of films, miniseries, and TV shows. King's novels are largely critical successes, but the adaptations based on his fiction are very hit and miss. "Carrie," "It," and "The Shining" top the list of horror classics, while films like "Dreamcatcher," "Dark Tower," and "Thinner" were major flops.
This shaky relationship with Hollywood and its audience might shake the foundation of some author's confidence, but King doesn't allow it to derail his writing. However,...

One of the things that I attribute the fact that I’m still alive to is the fact that I never liked going camping. From The Hills Have Eyes to The Trees Have Eyes to Eyes of Fire and now In the Forest heading out to the great outdoors never seems to end well, does it?
In the Forest opens with Bob Seegar’s “Against the Wind” playing on an Rv radio. Apart from making me feel old, it made me nervous because getting the rights to a song like this probably ate most of the film’s budget. Inside the Rv are Stan, his daughter Helen and her daughter Emily. Stan seems to think this trip will do the ladies some good, they don’t seem to be so sure.

This might not be the best movie for people that are obsessed with losing weight, especially since the effects get kind of gruesome even if they’re a little simple. But as a story and as a movie, it does feel that Stephen King’s tale, Thinner, doesn’t get nearly as much respect as it might warrant. It’s a very simple story to be fair since compared to many of King’s other offerings it’s something that doesn’t have a lot of intricate moving parts and is a little more ham-fisted than it needed to be when it comes to a tale of

Michael Constantine, whose long career produced an Emmy award and many memorable turns as a character actor, died Aug. 31 at his home in Reading, Pa. He was 94 and died from natural causes, his agent, Julia Buchwald, confirmed.
Constantine was best known as the fruit and Windex-obsessed father Gus Portokalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, an indie film that rose out of nowhere to become a smash hit. It spawned a sequel and a third version was in the planning stages, this time set in Greece.,
The original film from 2002 scored more than $360 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing romantic comedies of all-time.
But Constantine had a long career before that breakout hit. He was the school principal on the popular TV series Room 222. The role of Seymour Kaufman was a key to the show, which ran on ABC-tv from 1969 to 1974. He won an Emmy for the role in 1970.

Michael Constantine, who played Gus, the father of Nia Vardalos’ Toula Portokalos in “My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” by far the highest-grossing romantic comedy of all time, died on Aug. 31. He was 94.
Constantine’s agent confirmed the news of his death to Variety. He died of natural causes.
“My Big Fat Greek Wedding” scored a domestic gross of $241 million in 2002; No. 2 on the list is “What Women Want” with $183 million. The film drew a SAG Awards nomination for outstanding performance by the cast of a theatrical motion picture.
As Roger Ebert recounted, Constantine’s Gus “specializes in finding the Greek root for any word (even ‘kimono’), and delivers a toast in which he explains that ‘Miller’ goes back to the Greek word for apple, and ‘Portokalos’ is based on the Greek word for oranges, and so, he concludes triumphantly, ‘In the end, we’re all fruits.’ ”

Stephen King is a name you associate far more with writing than acting, but in spite of this, he’s racked up over two dozen credits in front of the camera, mostly cameos in adaptations of his own work. Despite the horror themes of many of these appearances, though, he’s only been seen to die once, in George A. Romero’s 1982 anthology Creepshow.
King appears in The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill, one of the film’s stronger segments, which sees the eponymous dim-witted farmer discover a meteorite on his land and envisions selling it to pay off his bank loan. However, a series of mishaps and Jordy’s own gormlessness result in the alien plant life within the rock escaping and enveloping both the farm and Jordy himself, whereupon, in a departure from the humor of the rest of the tale, he blows his head off with a...

Alex Ross Perry (“Her Smell”) will write and direct the adaptation of Stephen King’s best-seller “The Dark Half” for MGM, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The story had been previously turned into a 1993 MGM film, which starred Timothy Hutton. It followed an author whose crime thrillers under a pseudonym sold better than the books written with his real name. Once his pseudonym is exposed, he decides to give his other ego a burial, but things start turning sinister as the alter ego has taken on a life of its own.
King wrote the book based on his own experiences when it was revealed he was writing thriller novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Those novels included “Thinner,” “Running Man,” “Rage” and “The Long Walk.”

Exclusive: MGM has set Alex Ross Perry to adapt and direct The Dark Half, a new adaptation of the 1989 Stephen King bestseller. Perry popped after writing, directing and producing Her Smell, the drama that premiered at the 2018 Toronto Film Festival, and for which Elisabeth Moss is Spirit Awards-nominated for her portrayal as a self-destructive rock star.
Perry plans a reinvention of a story first turned into a 1993 MGM film by the late zombie impresario George Romero. The master of horror is ready for his closeup. Here's a history of Stephen King movie and TV cameos.
Like many people with fertile imaginations, Stephen King loves movies. He loves them so much, in fact, that he’s appeared in quite a few himself, starting in 1981 with a cameo as a rather slovenly redneck in George A. Romero’s jousting bikers drama, Knightriders (he’s billed as “Hoagie Man”).
Over the years, King has broadened his range to include appearances in not just movies, but in TV shows like The Simpsons and Sons of Anarchy.
He even memorably starred in an American Express commercial in 1985:

For the most part, however, King’s onscreen appearances have been in films and TV series based on his own work, usually in quick, don’t-blink-or-you’ll-miss-him walk-ons but occasionally in a decent-sized supporting role.

The work of Stephen King has a long history of making its way to the big screen with wildly different results. Some land Academy Awards (“Misery”) or become classics (“The Shawshank Redemption”) while others disappear into the film ether But when great material merges with a wonderful adaptation, the result can be a $91 million dollar opening weekend, as was the case with “It: Chapter Two.”
Every adaptation comes with its challenges and even with two movies, you can’t fit all of King’s 1,138 pages onto the big screen. Screenwriter Gary Dauberman, who co-wrote the first chapter and also penned all the of “Annabelle” films, was faced with a dream job that could have become a nightmare: how to update the characters of King’s lovable “Losers Club” for the big screen. We spoke to him about the differences between book and movie, and the things that got lost along the way.

There's another Stephen King movie on the way! His novella, The Gingerbread Girl, is the latest story of his to get picked up for a feature film adaptation. The rights to the story were snatched up by Brainstorm Media.
The Gingerbread Girl was originally published in Esquire magazine and was later included in King’s 2008 collection of stories Just After Sunset.
For those of you not familiar with the story, it focuses on a woman named Emily, who is "recovering from a recent loss in a secluded house in the loneliest stretch of New England. She avoids contact with her husband and her father and channels her grief into a grueling daily running regimen. This is doing her all kinds of good, until one day she makes the mistake of looking into the driveway of a man named Pickering. Pickering also enjoys privacy, but the young women he brings to...

Hey, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. We've got some extra great news for you guys that we think you'll certainly enjoy hearing. Recently, the folks over at Deadline recently put out a report revealing that ABC is so pleased with the way the current season 14 is going that they decided to extend it! That's right. Apparently, ABC only originally ordered 22 episodes for this season, but now they've bumped that number up to a full 24. That means you guys can expect to get an additional two more episodes before this season is over. How do you guys feel about that? We're sure most of you are ecstatic about it. In addition to ABC extending out Grey's Anatomy's 14th season, Deadline also reported that ABC gave their hit comedy series "Black-ish" another two episodes, and they gave their show American Housewife another two episodes. That gave both of those series a total 24 episodes each.

Hey, "Grey's Anatomy" fans. We've got some very interesting new casting news for you guys in regards to this current season 14. Recently, the folks over at Entertainment Weekly put out a new article revealing that the show has hired former"One Tree Hill" actress Bethany Joy Lenz. If any of you were "One Tree Hill" fans, you'll remember her as the one who played character Haley James Scott on that show. Entertainment Weekly pointed out that this new casting comes just after they got rid of season regular Martin Henderson aka Dr. Nathan Riggs. Bethany is scheduled to just be a guest character on Grey's Anatomy. So, it doesn't sound like she'll be sticking around for long. She might come in and do an arc that spans a few episodes and then head out. But, who knows? Anything can happen. She might stick around the whole season if they decide its better for the show.

His ties to the local law enforcement, Judge Cary Rossington (John Horton) and Chief of Police Duncan Hopley (Daniel von Bargen), means the case is dismissed before it gets to court. However, the old woman’s father (Michael Constantine) has a different kind of justice in mind. He curses Halleck with the word ‘thinner’ and soon, Halleck begins to lose weight at a dangerous and ever-increasing rate.

With the popularity of Stephen King exploding right now, Looper has released a video that breaks down what they feel are the 10 worst and 10 best films that have been adapted from his work.
I personally don't agree with the lists that they've put together. For example, they put Dreamcatcher and Needful Things on the list of worst movies, which is ridiculous because those are two of my favorites! On top of that, they don't even include Pet Cemetary on the Best list, but they have Dolores Claiborne. This list was made before Geralds Game was released, but I'd definitely but that on the best list as well.
I understand that these lists are a personal opinion, so watch the video breakdown below and let us know what you would change on the list!

Let me get this out of the way up front: I think Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi action classic, RoboCop, is a perfect film. With its mix of brilliant social satire, comic book action, dystopian sci-fi, and insane violence—a brilliant blend of ’80s aesthetics, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner’s sharp script, a perfect cast, and Paul Verhoeven’s particular brand of genius/madness. It is the kind of movie that cannot really be reproduced… though two sequels and a 2014 remake certainly gave it a shot. That each came up short in different ways comes as no surprise. It only offers proof of the original movie’s magical alchemy.
Though they are disappointing in comparison to RoboCop, both of its initial sequels—1990’s RoboCop 2, directed by Irvin Kershner, and the Fred Dekker-helmed RoboCop 3 from 1993—attempt to replicate different aspects of the original and are not without some amount of charm,...

Want to make a short film based on one of Stephen King's stories? Chances are that it'll only cost you a dollar...
Stephen King is, you might say, a bit prolific. With over 50 novels, 6 nonfiction books, and 200 short stories to his name (or Richard Bachman's), King has one of the hardest-working pens/typewriters/laptops in the writing world. And best of all, when it comes to King's work, quantity does equal quality.
That's probably why Hollywood is constantly optioning his countless works for big blockbuster film adaptations. Guys like Frank Darabont, Brian De Palma, Stanley Kubrick, George A. Romero, John Carpenter, Lawrence Kasdan, and Rob Reiner have all taken stabs (no pun intended) at his work. Many of them are even great films that hold their own, which is very rare in the novel-to-film adaptation business, especially when the source material is as high-profile as King's.

Tom Holland (Child's Play, Thinner) returns to horror with the indie feature Rock Paper Dead. Developed by writers Kerry Fleming and Victor Miller, the film involves a "cured...serial killer." Peter returns to his ancestral home to, unsurprisingly, kill again! The film stars: Michael Madsen, Tatum O'Neal, Najarra Townsend and Gabrielle Stone. Rock Paper Dead will release in 2017. Before the film's launch,...

Even the lead actor seems miscast, the whole film just seems weird. Here's the first teaser trailer for Tom Holland's Rock Paper Dead, direct from YouTube (via Deadline): From the creators of Friday the 13th and Child's Play!, Rock Paper Dead is the story of serial killer,...
