New York City – Although many people will never think of Sarah Jessica Parker in any other role than Carrie Bradshaw of “Sex and the City,” the actor makes a major breakout with her new film, “Blue Night,” which premiered (naturally for her) at the 17th Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on April 19th, 2018.

“Blue Night” is set in New York City, and can be reasonable described as “Carrie Bradshaw through the looking glass.” Parker portrays Vivienne, a jazz singer whose career has always taken precedent over her life. She receives some devastating news, and because she is estranged from her mother, daughter and ex-husband, she has few resources to turn towards. The film follows her character through 24 hours as she processes her news, which includes a guest vocal at an NYC jazz club.

It is hard to think of a more generic title for a romantic comedy than Boy Meets Girl, although the newest film from writer/director Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell) is much more unique than its limp name implies. The title does not refer to a meeting between two people of different genders, but the merging of gender identities. Protagonist Ricky (Michelle Hendley) was born a man but identifies as a woman. As a child, she dressed up in gowns for Halloween. In high school, she ditched football for fashion blogging and dress designing.
In a time when greater awareness about the transgender community has created much more cultural acceptance, watching Boy Meets Girl feels both liberating and limiting. That liberation comes from Schaeffer’s openness to delve into questions of gender, identity and sexuality, However, familiar plotting, characters and dialogue limit the depth of the drama. Regardless, one can...

Chicago – Reeling32, the Chicago International Lgbt Film Festival, had a sensational Opening Night on Thursday, September 18th, 2014. The festival began with “Boy Meets Girl,” featuring Michelle Hendley in her debut performance, and directed by Eric Schaeffer. Both star and director attended the Opening Night.
“Boy Meets Girl” tells the story of Ricky (Hendley), a transgender girl from a small town, who accepts the world as it is around her. Hendley is a transgender actor, and brought a perfect balance of humor and valor to the role. Eric Schaeffer is a veteran director of television and film, including the indie favorites “If Lucy Fell” (1996) and “Mind the Gap” (2004). This is his ninth feature film.
“Reeling32,” the 2014 Chicago Lgbt International Film Festival has an incredible line-up of films, events and parties until closing night on Thursday, September 25th. Theater venues include the historic Music Box Theater, Landmark’s Century Centre Cinema and Chicago Filmmakers.

Woody Allen’s back catalogue casts a long shadow across contemporary romantic comedy. His tropes and trademarks are as ingrained into the collective sense memory as mother’s perfume. At the first tremble of a clarinet, mutter about mortality or meander across a Manhattan neighbourhood, we inhale the nostalgia like Bisto kids. And arguably we’d never have met Harry and Sally, walked the Sidewalks of New York or dined alongside Friends with Money without his influence.
The Longest Week is peppered with Woody base notes. Over the course of seven days, Conrad (Jason Bateman) has been stripped of the safety net of his wealth and the cushion of his ego, moved in with his cynical best friend (Billy Crudup) and accidentally fallen in love with his girl (Olivia Wilde). His eventual dilemma – to be or not to be a better man – is as timeless as Annie Hall.
Now, to coincide with its DVD release,...

James Rebhorn, one of the most prolific and recognizable American actors of the stage and screen, died on Friday at his New Jersey home. He was 65.
A familiar face for all film fans, Rebhorn spent many years honing his craft in the theatre before appearing in many of the biggest films and television series of the last 20 years. Although the actor was diagnosed with melanoma in 1992, he continued working heavily until last month, racking up 125 credits during 30 years in the business.
With a tall, gangly figure, Rebhorn often played characters with sleaze, power or a mix of both. He often portrayed politicians, police chiefs, strict fathers and lawyers, and never gave a dull performance. Among his most notable film roles are as Herbert Greenleaf in The Talented Mr. Ripley, secretary of defence Albert Nimziki in Independence Day and the mysterious Jim Feingold in The Game. Other film credits include parts in Meet the Parents,...

Production designer David Doernberg, who brought a sensitive, finely crafted and observant touch to many excellent independent films, died in New York on Friday after a battle with cancer.
Doernberg began his career in the late ’80s/early ’90s working on music videos for bands like Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and Superchunk. He quickly moved into independent features, working as a propmaster for films by Hal Hartley (Amateur), Daisy von Scherler Mayer (Party Girl) and Eric Schaeffer (If Lucy Fell). Soon after he became a production designer, bookending his career with films by Kelly Reichardt. He designed her 1994 debut film, River of Grass, as well as her 2010 period tale of frontier life on the Oregon Trail, Meek’s Cutoff. Other notable credits include Phil Morrison’s Junebug, Alison Maclean’s Jesus’s Son, Morgan J. Freeman’s Desert Blue, Todd Solondz’s Palindromes and Pete Sollett’s Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

We've got the exclusive premiere of the trailer for IFC Films' "They're Out of the Business," from Eric Schaeffer and Donald Lardner Ward. Schaeffer is the director of films like "If Lucy Fell" and the co-creator of the recent Starz series "Gravity;" Ward is the director of "The Suburbans" and a staff writer on the HBO series "How to Make it In America." Together they made a splash on the film scene in 1993, after they decided to turn themselves into independent filmmakers with "My Life in Turnaround," a movie about a couple of average joes -- Splick (Schaeffer) and Jason (Ward) -- who decide to turn themselves into independent filmmakers. As that description suggests, the film was not, in any way, shape, or form, autobiographical.
"They're Out of the Business" picks up Splick and Jason's story some fifteen years (and some successes and disappointments) later. Here's the trailer, followed by the official plot description.

The show about L.A. cater-waiters will premiere on April 23, where it will be paired with Starz's new show "Gravity." Season 2 will pick up a few months after the end of the first season, with Henry (Adam Scott) now in charge of the Party Down team, Casey (Lizzy Caplan) back from her cruise-ship gig and Ron (Ken Marino) having gone off the deep end after his Soup R' Crackers dream disintegrates.
The show will also feature new regular Megan Mullally as Lydia Dunfree, a new member of the catering crew who's moved to Los Angeles in an attempt to make her 14-year-old daughter a star. She takes over for "Glee's" Jane Lynch, who'll return for the season finale as her character, Constance, gets married.

Cable networks presented a lively number of panels for the second day of critics press tour with slates that compensated in entertainment value for what they lacked in headlines.
MTV Networks, History, Nat Geo, Espn and Starz largely kept announcements to a minimum while focusing on paneling new programming. One highlight was Joan Rivers, promoting her new TV Land reality series, "How'd You Get So Rich?"
Rivers lived up to her blunt comedic reputation with a dig at the expense of Jay Leno. The former "Tonight Show" guest host was asked if she thought Leno's new fall show would succeed at 10 p.m.
"I think it's brilliant that Leno is at 10 p.m., because America can get bored more easily and go to sleep earlier," she said. "When was the last time you heard, 'Did you hear what Leno said last night?' It will be nice for the Midwest...
