One to hit the market that is creating the sniff of an auction for film and TV rights: The Last Kilo: Willie Falcon and the Cocaine Era That Seduced America. The book proposal is about to hit the market through Verve, and it is written by T.J. English. His previous work, The Corporation: The Epic Story of the Cuban-American Underworld, sold to Paramount in a seven-figure deal with Benicio Del Toro attached to star and Appian Way producing.
The Last Kilo tells the story of Augusto “Willie” Falcon, who, along with partner Sal Magluta and a crew known as Los Muchachos, became the biggest cocaine smugglers in American history — more than $20 billion worth in a two-decade run. The book is based on exclusive interviews with Falcon, who, after serving a 27-year prison term, is currently living under an assumed name in an undisclosed country — to be revealed for the first time in the book.

Lauren Conrad designed an adorable nautical-themed nursery for her 4-month son Liam James — complete with plenty of whales and sailboats — but she says making the decision wasn’t easy.
“When it came time to design Liam’s nursery, I was all over the place. At first I wanted to make it a celestial theme with a navy wall covered in constellations,” Conrad revealed on her blog, adding that she started “seeing celestial nurseries popping up all over Pinterest, so I decided to try something else.”

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for the ending of “Stranger Things 2,” also known by traditional TV fans as “Stranger Things” Season 2.]
Well, that was a neat and tidy ending.
After bringing in more characters, building more stories, and digging deeper than ever into the mythology of the Upside-Down, “Stranger Things 2” ended rather simply: Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) closed the gate, cutting off the Shadow Monster’s access to the real world and killing all the demodogs in the process. No one hugely significant died (sorry Bob), good triumphed over evil, and all looks quiet headed into Season 3.
Not quite.
Though technically all of that is true and the second season of “Stranger Things” ended on less of a cliffhanger than the first, its cliffhanger was bigger.

As The Police blasted “Every Breath You Take” over the Snow Ball, the camera crept out to a wide shot of Hawkins Middle School… and began to spin.

Few acting resumes include as many visionary, boundary-pushing auteur filmmakers as Chloë Sevigny’s. A selected list of the directors she’s worked with could easily fill an IndieWire top ten: Harmony Korine, Vincent Gallo, Lars Von Trier, Whit Stillman, Kimberly Peirce, Olivier Assayas, and David Fincher — to name a few. In fact, as IndieWire co-founder Eugene Hernandez put it at a sit-down with the actress at the Provincetown International Film Festival last weekend, Sevigny was at the epicenter of the independent film renaissance of the late 1990s and early 2000s that inspired IndieWire’s creation in the first place.

“It was the work of Chloe and so many of her collaborators…that inspired the site we created. So without even knowing it, Chloe, you were part of what helped inspire us to do what we did at IndieWire,” said Hernandez in his introduction.
Sevigny was in Provincetown showing her short film, “Kitty,” the actress’ first foray into directing. It’s a visually lush and fantastical film based on a short story by Paul Bowles, whose work once led her to travel to Marrakech with Korine in the mid-’90s, “Just kind of following in his footsteps.” As the festival presented her with their Excellence in Acting Award, Sevigny and Hernandez sat down for a career-spanning talk that included some eyebrow-raising anecdotes from her days working with indie cinema’s most lauded (and eccentric) directors.

Here are seven things you may not have known about Sevigny’s most memorable films, and some of the greatest (and most controversial) indies of the last twenty years, according to her:
1. Before “Boys Don’t Cry,” Drew Barrymore wanted to play Brandon Teena, and she asked Harmony Korine to direct it.
“Drew Barrymore had actually approached Harmony and she wanted to play [Brandon Teena] and she wanted me to play Lana in her version. There were some weird initial meetings around that, which obviously didn’t go very far. She sent in these kind of Herb Ritts photos of herself done up as a boy. She looked really attractive, but it wasn’t gonna work. And then I actually went and auditioned for the [Brandon Teena] part. Kimberly Peirce said, ‘You’ve never wanted to be a boy, have you?’ And I said, ‘No,’ and she was like, ‘Why don’t you come back in and try out for the other part?’ So I did, and I got it.”
2. Sarah Polley was Kimberly Peirce’s first choice to play Lana in “Boys Don’t Cry.”
“I only got the part because Sarah Polley passed. That happened to me a lot in the ’90s. She got a lot of parts that I wanted.”
3. The reaction to that infamous blow job scene in Vincent Gallo’s “The Brown Bunny” still haunts her.
“I thought it would just kind of play to an art house audience, I don’t know why I thought it would just go under the radar. Vincent’s a real character. I love ‘Buffalo 66.’ I put my faith in him, believed in him. He’s also very seductive, as you can imagine… I think it was a way of kind of reclaiming myself, which sounds odd, but after the celebrity and stuff, being like: ‘No, that’s not who I am, I’m this other thing, and this is what I stand for.’ Or wanting to push the envelope. Like John [Waters], who’s here.” Sevigny gestured to Waters, who called out from the audience: “I loved the ‘The Brown Bunny’! The insects on the windshield…”

4. “The Brown Bunny” didn’t hurt her career, but it did hurt some relationships.
“I got my first studio film after that. I’d never been offered a studio film. It was ‘Zodiac.’ I don’t think it really hurt me, necessarily. I mean, it hurt me, in a lot of ways… Some relationships have had trouble with it. Of course, my mom and I don’t talk about it.”
5. Whit Stillman is terrifying.
“He’s very precise, and he also likes to do things a lot… It becomes surreal. Not as much as Fincher — he does full takes. Whit just wants you to say one line or one word again and again and again in a series. It’s terrifying. So scared of that man. And yet I keep going back. Glutton for punishment.”
6. Lars Von Trier spanked her on the set of “Dogville” (often).
“I think that Lars tortures the main actresses, and the supporting players get a free ride. He was really into spanking me. But in a playful way. He’d always tease me, like I had to be punished. And he knew I was into Black metal so he was always teasing me about like going off and burning churches. We had a funny rapport. But I think he was harder on Nicole [Kidman].”
7. The Chloe videos hurt her feelings.
“Ugh, I have a really complicated relationship with those. I don’t want to say I’m offended, ’cause that’s such a strong word. But I don’t enjoy them. I think because he’s a comedian. If he was more of a drag performer, I would feel like less – they hurt my feelings. Maybe I should be tougher, I don’t know. But they do.”

The Oscars have been a source of contention for the last two years — but that is poised to change this year. At the source of the controversy is a lack of non-white performers among the 20 slots in the best actor, best actress, best supporting actor, and best supporting actress categories. Let’s see just how many minorities — of black, Asian, and hispanic descent — have been honored by the Academy since 2000.
#OscarsSoWhite is the term that has been used to describe the phenomenon of having non-white thespians completely shut out of the acting categories at the 2015 and 2016 ceremonies. Nearly all of Hollywood and the press have spoken out about this occurrence, though it looks like the 2017 ceremony could shape up to be one of the most diverse in history. Here is a breakdown of every nominee and winner post-2000:
For the 2000 ceremony, there was one minority for each acting category.

The Oscars have been a source of contention for the last two years — but that is poised to change this year. Let’s see just how many minorities — of black, Asian, and hispanic descent — have been honored by the Academy since 2000.

As the Sundance Film Festival’s groundbreaking and technology-facing New Frontier section kicks off its second decade in existence, the 2017 edition of the section boasts its most stacked and varied programing picks yet. The full slate includes “story worlds” in Augmented Reality headsets, projection-mapped acrobatics, a Vr beauty salon producing neuroscience data via the internet of things and a host of socialized, interactive and immersively haptic Vr story experiences.
The rest of the lineup includes live performances, a feature film and augmented reality experiences built to complement 22 Vr experiences and 11 installations, showcased between three venues in Park City. The Claim Jumper will host 10 immersive installations focused on cross-disciplinary story construction, while the Vr Palace will feature 17 Vr experiences alongside an additional installation and the Vr Bar will offer a lineup of mobile Vr. Two New Frontier projects are part of the Festival’s New Climate program, which highlights the environment and climate change.

Each year one of our awards traditions is to help fellow Bfca members choose more wisely when it comes to the "Young Performer" category by sharing an eligibility list. The lazy nominations each year prove that help is needed. Here's the thing: it can be difficult to even think of who is eligible when you're filling out a ballot because you don't get a list of choices and it's not a category people campaign for or one that the internet talks about. So we solve that problem right here. Our other belief, which is why we do this, is that if you actually pay attention there are enough worthy performances each year to divvy this category up into male and female as the other acting categories are divvied up. But, yes, you have to be paying attention beyond 5 or 6 movies and leading roles to notice the truly special work.

There was one thing Naomie Harris never wanted to do. Although the classically trained British actress’ resume is enviably varied, complete with a two-film turn as James Bond’s ever-reliable right-hand gal Moneypenny, a recurring role in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise and a lauded performance as Winnie Mandela in the 2013 biopic “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom,” Harris had long made it plain that there were roles she just wouldn’t take.
“I set out my career thinking that there were enough stereotypes about black women, so I wanted to make a difference in this arena,” Harris recently told IndieWire. “The only area where I have power is in the roles I choose, so I want to portray progressive images of women.”

And that stance boiled down to one – very firm – no-go: “I drew the line at crack addiction.

Every great Western needs a great villain, and Peter Sarsgaard delivers an outsized one in Antoine Fuqua’s “The Magnificent Seven.” In the remake of the classic 1960 feature of the same name (itself an Americanized remake of the 1954 Akira Kurosawa feature “Seven Samurai”), Sarsgaard plays the power-hungry (and just plain mean) Bartholomew Bogue, who has taken over the tiny town of Rose Creek, all the better to capitalize on its rich local mines.
Bogue’s methods for keeping Rose Creek’s citizens in line are vicious and brutal, and he’s clearly not used to being opposed by anyone, especially small-town folk who are just trying to carve out a living for themselves during the heyday of the American West. In an attempt to stifle an uprising, Bogue sets into motion a much bigger problem, led by Haley Bennett’s Emma Cullen, who takes matters into her own hands and...

Buoyed by the Supreme Court decision on same-sex marriage, things looked really good for Lgbtq people at the start of 2016. Then came the Orlando massacre, and with it the reminder that queer people were not safe, not even within the comforts provided by its culture.
That was only six weeks ago, but it seems longer. Orlando has fallen out of the news cycle — for the media, too many fresher tragedies take precedence. There’s the police murders of black men, an assassin’s murders of police and the public in Dallas, the Nice attacks, and even another Florida nightclub shooting, this one in Fort Myers. And for the public, the crises converge. There were signs remembering Orlando at Black Lives Matter rallies, and the Lgbtq community responded to Orlando with anti-gun rallies and messages of support for Muslims.
This puts Lgbtq culture in a familiar position: If the threats to...

In noting that Fender Bender is Shout! Factory’s first producing credit, I wish the following words were a bit more positive.
Spoiler alert: they aren’t.
What I’ve noticed over the years is that horror movies are easy to make (hence the quantity), yet deceptively hard to execute (hence a massive genre quality gap). Anyone can recreate deaths on-screen, but it takes skill to avoid driving in the same circles as so many filmmakers before. Take Fender Bender as your latest example, where filmmaker Mark Pavia dilutes an original idea with stale, musty slasher generics that have been dominating too many of my reviews lately. A select few moments shine – mostly involving gnarly gore effects – but the sum of this creepy driver’s rampage is nothing but a bland home invasion/slasher wannabe told through a weak, timid voice.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Deadpool, Pitch Perfect 2 and Jurassic World were among the winners at this year's always eclectic MTV Movie Awards, hosted by Kevin Hart and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
The pair opened the show with an outrageous Mad Max: Fury Road homage, entering the Warner Bros. backlot on an outsized battle rig and surrounded by a horde of War Boys. Topping it all off, Hart was strapped to the front — à la Max Rockatansky, but with far more screaming — while Johnson stood atop the rig rocking a flame-thrower guitar.

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

Love is never an easy road. And that will be none more apparent when filmmaker Michael Souder makes his directorial debut on By Day's End, a found footage thriller that will mesh the zombie apocalypse with the relationship drama seen from the perspective of a lesbian couple.
Exclusively centered around Carly and Rina's efforts to mend their deteriorating relationship while trying to survive a pandemic disease that has ravaged the world, the film will aim to tell an emotional love story wrapped around a premise horror fans have grown to love: the zombie survivalist thriller.
Previously a finalist in screenplay competitions including the Creative World Awards and Screencraft Horror, Souder will direct from a script written by himself and co-writer Justin Calen Chenn, creator of genre festival favorite 'Folklore,' which starred Ruth Connell (CW's Supernatural) and Laura Waddell (Saving Mr. Banks) and viral short sensation 'Sapphire Strange.

Pioneering woman director Lois Weber socially conscious drama 'Shoes' among Library of Congress' Packard Theater movies (photo: Mary MacLaren in 'Shoes') In February 2015, National Film Registry titles will be showcased at the Library of Congress' Packard Campus Theater – aka the Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation – in Culpeper, Virginia. These range from pioneering woman director Lois Weber's socially conscious 1916 drama Shoes to Robert Zemeckis' 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future. Another Packard Theater highlight next month is Sam Peckinpah's ultra-violent Western The Wild Bunch (1969), starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine. Also, Howard Hawks' "anti-High Noon" Western Rio Bravo (1959), toplining John Wayne and Dean Martin. And George Cukor's costly remake of A Star Is Born (1954), featuring Academy Award nominees Judy Garland and James Mason in the old Janet Gaynor and Fredric March roles. There's more: Jeff Bridges delivers a colorful performance in...

Canada has a wealth of cinematic talent, and always has. From our comedic genius to our often cerebral approach to filmmaking, this country has a lot to be proud of.
Of late, and especially this year, Canada has really dominated the movies landscape. Our homegrown actors (Sarah Gadon, for example) and directors (Xavier Dolan, "Mommy") have been everywhere, earning accolades around the world. Movies shot within our borders have won rave reviews and received praise from the highest-ranked critics and film festivals.
Perhaps most outstanding is our growth. No longer are we satisfied with melancholic snow landscapes (though sometimes those still appear); we've branched out, and we're trying new things. Here, in no particular order, are my favourite Canadian movies and moments of 2014.

As is usually the case, 2014 held a rich vein of great nonfiction cinema … that went mostly untapped by any wide audiences. But just because documentaries are perpetually under-served by popular (and even critical) attention doesn’t mean that we should neglect these films. This is a celebration of all the best docs to come out this year.
But first, for the sake of full disclosure, here are all the notable docs of 2014 that I haven’t gotten around to seeing yet:
1989, 20,000 Days on Earth, Ai Weiwei: The Fake Case, Big Joy, Big Men, Code Black, Evolution of a Criminal, The Great Flood, The Great Invisible, The Kill Team, National Gallery, The Missing Picture, Maidentrip, Manakamana, The Naked Opera, Virunga, Watchers of the Sky, What Now? Remind Me, Whitey
Next,we have some honorable mentions — other docs of 2014 that are well worth seeking out:
A Will for the Woods, Art and Craft,...

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (again), and as usual it’s getting to those last few weeks before the big day when creative ideas and planning make way for frantic grabs at whatever is left on the shelves after the Black Friday zombie hordes have cleared everything out.
But fear not: because the best of Christmas is watching movies, re-watching old TV specials and trying hard to forget that George Lucas ever decided that anyone wanted a Star Wars Christmas show, there’ll always be a helping hand round these parts for those who want it.
So if you’re buying for a difficult brother, a picky sister or just for the film, gaming or TV fan in your life, what follows is a compendium of the finest gift ideas for this year’s festivities, as usual there are massive opportunities to win most of what has been included…...

Sometimes, you learn more about a major television event by not watching it. That was my experience Thursday, as I enjoyed Peter Pan Live! not through my own eyes, but through the eyes of Twitter.
(Disclaimer: TVLine Senior Editor Michael Slezak did watch Peter Pan Live!, so if “accuracy” is more your flavor, check out his photo recap of the best, worst and “whoops-iest” moments.)
All right, friends, here’s what I gathered…
It all started with a dead maid:

Forget Rayna and Deacon: Nashville‘s new power couple is Rayna and Sadie.
They’ve got no angst. No trauma. No drunken arguments, throwing of rings or hate-banging of backup singers — just two fun ladies, acting sassy toward the paparazzi and singing a duet on stage in front of thousands of people.
Y’know, like my best girlfriends and I do on the average Friday night.
In fact, why not ditch all of the dudes in Music City — at least temporarily — so we can watch these two hot mamas be awesome and make music and have shiny hair. Hell, move Sadie and sad,...

And yes, they had to recreate the Flying V.
Ducks fly together, indeed!
Cast members from the 1994 classic D2: The Mighty Ducks reunited Sunday, September 21, to celebrate the film's 20th anniversary, and thankfully, actress Marguerite Moreau (Connie) and her husband Christopher Redman let everyone in on the fun on Instagram.
Though Joshua Jackson and Emilio Estevez were noticeably absent from the festivities, key cast members were present including Sandlot actor Mike Vitar (who played Luis Mendoza in the film), Garette Ratliff Henson (Guy Germaine), Moreau, Vincent Larusso (Adam Banks), Aaron Lohr (Dean Portman) and Scott Whyte, who played their memorable rival Gunnar Stahl (the captain for the Iceland team).
