Norman Jewison, the celebrated film director, has died. He was 97. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker passed away at his home on Saturday, January 20, 2024.
Jewison had a long and varied directing and producing career that was peppered with accolades. His films "Moonstruck," "A Soldier's Story," "Fiddler on the Roof," "In the Heat of the Night," and "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming" were nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1987, 1984, 1971, 1967, and 1966 respectively, with "Heat of the Night" winning. Jewison also helmed dozens of other notable dramas and musicals besides, including "The Thomas Crown Affair", "Gaily, Gaily" (nominated for three Oscars), "Jesus Christ Superstar" (nominated for one Oscar), "...And Justice for All" (two), "Agnes of God" (three), and "The Hurricane" (one).
All told, Jewison's films were nominated for 41 Oscars, winning 12. He also directed the sci-fi thriller "Rollerball," the comedy "Bogus," the romance "Only You," the Stallone drama "F.I.S.T.,...

Oscar-nominated film director and producer Norman Jewison, who steered the 1967 racial drama “In the Heat of the Night” to a best picture Oscar and also helmed such popular films as “Moonstruck,” “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” and “The Thomas Crown Affair,” as well as film musicals “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” died Saturday at his Los Angeles residence. He was 97.
His film career began with fluffy Doris Day comedies like “The Thrill of It All.” But Jewison’s social conscience began to surface with “In the Heat of the Night” and, later, the labor union drama “F.I.S.T.” and other films focusing on racial tensions such as “A Soldier’s Story” and “The Landlord” (the latter of which he only produced), though he never abandoned comedies and romances.

Paresh Rawal Shares A Sad Update On Hera Pheri 3, Says “I’ll Put All My Money…” On Having Children Like Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt…
Nepotism! Nepotism! Nepotism! This term bumped up to the Google search when Kangana Ranaut called Karan Johar the ‘flag-bearer of Nepotism’ on his own show, and the world lost it. Paresh Rawal, the man who speaks so much sense whenever he talks, has opened up about the controversial N-word debate and also shared an update on the much-awaited Hera Pheri 3.
Calling Nepotism in Bollywood ‘bogus,’ he has shut down the debate, saying he’ll put all his money if his son/daughter was as talented as Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt. This indeed will initiate many discussions around the topic, but Babu Bhaiya doesn’t give a damn about it.

The Hives have returned with their sixth studio album, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons. Stream the record below.
Spanning 12 tracks and packing-in an impressive amount of Hives-esque angst, antics, and rock ‘n’ roll prowess, the album proves that just because the popularity of rock has waned in recent years doesn’t mean that one of the genre’s greatest purveyors has lost their touch. In fact, The Hives think there might even be a correlation: “I’m just saying that The Hives don’t release a record for 10 years, [and] rock becomes completely unpopular,” frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist told The New York Times. “Coincidence? We think not.”
Thankfully, The Hives weren’t alone in this endeavor. The making of The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons began like how all of their albums begin: with input from their fictional “mentor and songwriter,” Randy Fitzsimmons. This time, though, Fitzsimmons seems to have helped them from beyond the grave.

It’s nearly impossible to become a household name faster than Haley Joel Osment did in the late ’90s. The critical and commercial success of The Sixth Sense catapulted him into the limelight as a child actor worthy of being considered alongside adult peers in major award categories.
Osment seemingly managed to avoid the dark side of young stardom despite his entrance into the entertainment industry coming in a way that can only be described as creepy Af.
Haley Joel Osment | Jeff Kravitz/Getty Images Osment’s career started after strangers took pictures of him at an Ikea
When Osment was four years old, he went to an Ikea in Burbank, California, with his mother, Theresa. That shopping trip would change the course of his and his family’s life. When the Osments went passed the child’s play area, two women took pictures of Haley Joel, something they did...

Stephen Herek's time travel comedy "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" became a hit in February of 1989, attended by scads of kids charmed by the surfer-dude, innocuous-metal-loving title characters played by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves, as well as the film's bonkers story about a high-tech flying phone booth that can take Bill and Ted to meet history's great figures. The premise (via Yahoo) was inspired by a standup improv game that screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon created in their college days wherein the two of them would stage conversations between well-known historical figures and brainless SoCal beach rats. The...

a series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
Incredibly disappointed I only now realized there was a road trip dramedy with Whoopi Goldberg, Mary-Louise Parker and Drew Barrymore.Long live the era of Whoopi Goldberg vehicles (aka the 90s).
Goldberg kick-started the 90s by winning a (well-deserved) Oscar for Ghost and headlining the smash-hit Sister Act. From there, we got a string of movies where Goldberg was the leading lady. Though they varied in quality and weren’t always progressive, it was impressive to see movie after movie built around a black actress. Who else could do Eddie, Bogus, The Associate And Ghosts of Mississippi all in 1996? We’re going a year earlier for this week’s gay best friend. No, we’re not talking about Theodore Rex (though… should we). Instead, we are talking about the messy dramedy I didn’t know I needed in my life,...

Alvin Sargent, who won Oscars for writing Ordinary People and Julia and was nominated for Paper Moon, has died of natural causes in Seattle. He was 92. Sargent also won WGA Awards for all three of those films and received the guild’s career honor, the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, in 1991.
Sargent penned more than two dozen feature screenplays from the 1960s into the 2010s, most recently The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Spider-Man 3 (2007) and Spider-Man 2 (2004). His feature credits also include What About Bob? (1991), Other People’s Money (1991) and Unfaithful (2002).
He began his screenwriting career in television, penning episodes of such 1960s drama series Ben Casey, Route 66, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour and Run for Your Life. Keanu Reeves gives an update on the state of Bill & Ted 3...
How long have we been waiting for Bill & Ted 3? Over 25 years. How long will we be waiting for Bill & Ted 3? At this point, if you told us it would be another 25 years, we would probably believe you.
Keanu Reeves was promoting John Wick: Chapter 2 on The Graham Norton Show, and the subject inevitably turned to sequels, specifically that long delayed Bill & Ted 3. While Reeves didn't make it necessarily sound like they were any closer to production, he sure did get into specifics regarding what this one is about.
He does refer to it in the present tense, too. "The writers had a story," Reeves said, "and we're trying to make it." As suspected, there's a hint of midlife crisis about whatever is going on with "Bill and Ted in their fifties."

You could say that the star of a movie puts butts in seats. Their name shines above the posters and on trailers, establishing a connection with a larger pre-existing fan base. But how does one reach such heights? Nobody is an A-Lister straight off the bat. It can take years of slogging away to acquire the appeal of someone like Brad Pitt or Tom Hanks as they’re can be the driving force behind a picture; the person the whole film and advertising campaign revolves around.
However, once in a while an actor will rise up and quite literally steal the show. They’ll put in a performance so inspired and well-crafted, the ‘intended star’ will cease to shine so brightly in comparison. All of a sudden, the public will take a vested interest in a new talent. All it takes is one performance; an opportunity only a...

Most of the great mysteries of life will never be explained: Where do we come from, why are we here, how does Carrot Top make a living?
But as a special favor to you, readers, we've managed to clear up one of the big ones -- what really happens when we buy the farm?
We talked to author/psychic Mary Ann Winkowski -- a consultant for "The Ghost Whisperer" and the woman Jennifer Love Hewitt's TV character was based on.
Mary Ann filled us in on which movies get it right and which get it dead wrong.
(We also learned there's a ghost hanging out in the NextMovie office, but that's another story.)
Verdict: No Way in Hell 'What Dreams May Come' (1998)

Classic actors don't always act in classic films. That's a relatively unarguable cinematic truism. We all know that, indeed, they sometimes act, quite frequently, in pretty terrible films. One need not enumerate the various slabs of celluloid tripe that the likes of Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro have elected to contribute their talents to in recent years, although one might feel compelled to note that, You Don't Know Jacknotwithstanding, Pacino in particular has been on such a run of dreck that one may wonder if it's threatening his very status as a classic actor. But we are not here to discuss or debate DeNiro or Pacino per se, so we'll let those fellows drop, except to say that, as they are American actors, the U.S.-residing readers of this site are privy to their every bad career choice or performance in a way that he or she isn't privy...

The Lorax I am not, I do not speak for the trees. I however do speak for the Me-Tree, the tree that’s me (Dr. Seuss was a genius, I’m not. I know.) There is a strong difference between a person’s “favorites” and what a person thinks are the “best.” Many lists seem to forget that very important fact. Sure, I think There Will Be Blood, Let The Right One In, Pan’s Labyrinth, Requiem For A Dream, Synecdoche, New York (etc.) are probably some of the best films of the decade as far as craft, performances, and technique goes, but they might not make the list (you have to read further to find out.) They might not be flicks that I want to revisit all the time for leisure or laughs. As for the types of movies that usually gravitate toward my favorites,...

Norman Jewison, the Oscar-nominated director of In the Heat of the Night, Fiddler on the Roof, and Moonstruck will add another line to his resume on Jan. 30, when the Directors Guild of America gives him its lifetime achievement award. It's a fairly exclusive honor, too -- the DGA has been around for 73 years but only gives lifetime achievement awards occasionally. Jewison is the 33rd recipient; the last one was Clint Eastwood, in 2006.
Jewison, an 83-year-old Toronto native, is a somewhat unusual choice for the DGA in that he hasn't been active lately. The most recent recipients -- Eastwood, Mike Nichols, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola -- had all been working pretty regularly at the time of their awards, but Jewison has only made three theatrical features in the last 15 years: Bogus (1996), The Hurricane (1999), and The Statement (2003).
