Laurence Olivier was an Oscar-winning thespian best remembered for his psychologically intense Shakespeare adaptations, both as an actor and a director. Yet his filmography extends well past the Bard’s work. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1907 in Surrey, England, Olivier first came to prominence on the British stage. A series of acclaimed theatrical performances, most notably in Noel Coward‘s “Private Lives,” caught the attention of filmmakers both in the UK and the US.
He earned his first Oscar nomination as Best Actor for William Wyler‘s “Wuthering Heights” (1939), competing the very next year for Alfred Hitchcock‘s “Rebecca” (1940). Having firmly established himself as a formidable talent in front of the camera, he stepped behind it to great success with “Henry V”, the first of three films he would direct and star in based on the works of William Shakespeare.

Mike Tyson was interested in playing this Shakespeare character Mike Tyson | David Livingston/FilmMagic
After retiring from boxing, Tyson spent time carving out his acting portfolio. He appeared in projects like The Hangover and Law & Order. He also voiced his own animated cartoon show, Mike Tyson Mysteries, on Adult Swim. Although Tyson starred in comedies, he never fancied himself as a comedy actor. Rather, Tyson wanted to stretch his range by adopting a large variety of roles.

After making what many people cite as the greatest film ever made, “Citizen Kane” (1941), multi-talented actor, writer, director and producer Orson Welles struggled to live up to the success he achieved when he was just 26 years old. Yet seen today, many of the films he made afterwards have attained a similar acclaim. Let’s take a look back at all 13 of his completed feature films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1915, Welles first came to prominence as a stage director, mounting groundbreaking productions of “Macbeth,” “Dr. Faustus,” and “The Cradle Will Rock” before forming his own repertory company, The Mercury Theater. In addition to Welles, the Mercury Theater Players included Joseph Cotten, Ray Collins, Agnes Moorhead, Everett Sloane, George Coulouris, Norman Lloyd, Martin Gabel and Paul Stewart, many of whom would go onto appear in the director’s films.

"The Love Boat" holds a fascinating place in pop culture history. While most of the shows with reruns playing in heavy rotation today were in some way groundbreaking upon their initial release, "The Love Boat" is a novelty the likes of which modern TV rarely – if ever – tries to emulate. An anthology-like rom-com set aboard a cruise ship, "The Love Boat" featured a revolving door of guest stars and little connective tissue to speak of aside from the cast playing the crew aboard the ship.

Billy Dee Williams is sharing his thoughts on actors wearing blackface.
If you didn’t know, blackface is the practice of non-black performers using black makeup to portray a caricature of black people on stage or on film.
In a new interview, the 87-year-old Star Wars actor looked back at the late English actor Laurence Olivier wearing blackface in the 1965 movie adaption of Othello.
Keep reading to find out more…“When he did Othello, I fell out laughing,” Billy recalled on the Club Random with Bill Maher podcast.
“He stuck his ass out and walked around because Black people are supposed to have big asses…I fell out laughing,” he added.
“And Bradley Cooper thinks he’s got a problem with the nose,” host Bill Maher noted of Bradley Cooper wearing a prosthetic nose to portray composer Leonard Bernstein in Maestro.
“I thought it was hysterical,” Billy chimed in. “I love that kind of stuff.

Since cinema is more than a hundred years old today, there naturally have been changes in the trends and culture as well as the lives of films and film stars in the industry, the most revolutionary in modern times being none other than Robert Downey Jr. with his successful run of the MCU.
But even before his fame and popularity soared in the stratosphere with Marvel Studios, the star wasn’t afraid of taking big risks in hopes of huge returns on them.

One of the most iconic roles of his life also happened to be a high-risk one, where the star went blackface for his 2008 comedy film Tropic Thunder. While this decision was indeed controversial, actor Billy Dee Williams feels like anyone should be able to express their creative ideas on screen, referring to another star who wore blackface in the past.

During a recent appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast “Club Random with Bill Maher,” actor Billy Dee Williams (Lando Calrissian) discussed the parameters placed on actors today when it comes to things like “blackface.”
Of course, by this point in the interview, they seem to have had a few drinks, so I’m not sure he would say this under other circumstances.
Here’s what Williams said:
Williams cited the performance of Lawrence Olivier’s performance of ‘Othello’ where we wore blackface and apparently pushed his butt out, saying, “When he did Othello, I fell out laughing. Jake Gyllenhaal was one of the top contenders to play Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, and although the role went to Christian Bale, director Christopher Nolan called Gyllenhaal personally to tell him he didn’t get the role.

Jake Gyllenhaal opened up about losing roles in Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge! and Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins.
The Road House actor appeared on The Howard Stern Show and talked about how he handled finding out he was not chosen for the roles in the films he auditioned for.
In Moulin Rouge! the role of Christian, that ultimately went to Ewan McGregor, was down to Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, who the actor would wind up co-starring later in Brokeback Mountain.
“What I felt was disappointment when I didn’t get it. Both Heath and I were disappointed,” Gyllenhaal said. “But that’s Ewan McGregor’s part. You learn to go, ‘There’s another one. I can try and go in and audition for another one. I’ll get something else.’ You keep that attitude.”

Despite the mixed reviews for Road House, the viewers and critics unanimously loved Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance in the bouncer role. It’s no wonder that the actor has such a good portfolio and even his rejected roles speak volumes of his skills. “Oh, man. That’s a classic. It’s an honor,” he said in an interview with Screen Rant while promoting his new movie Road House. “Speaking of playing roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, to me actually roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, which, to me, actually, when I think about it, I’m going to play Iago in Othello with Denzel Washington, and I think about like the history of actors that have played that role throughout time, and I’m intimidated by that.”
He continued, “So that’s the first level. That’s what I’m working on right now. But of course. It would be an honor always.

Jake Gyllenhaal still has his eyes set on hopefully playing Batman at some point during his acting career.
The actor was previously considered for the role of Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s 2005 Batman Begins, but the role ultimately went to Christian Bale. However, that hasn’t changed his aspirations of one day stepping into the Batsuit.
“Of course. It would be an honor always,” Gyllenhaal recently told Screen Rant when asked if he’s still interested. “Those types of things and those roles are classics.”
The Road House star went on to explain his admiration for characters he considers “classics,” and how he looks up to the actors who have played them over the years.

Jake Gyllenhaal was a serious contender to play Bruce Wayne in Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight” trilogy, but it appears losing the role to Christian Bale never impacted Gyllenhaal’s desire to play Batman on the big screen. Making the press rounds in support of his new Prime Video action movie “Road House,” Gyllenhaal was asked by Screen Rant if he was still interested in playing Batman.
“Oh, man. That’s a classic [role]. Jake Gyllenhaal is known for his prominent roles outside the superhero genre, but he was once considered for both ‘Batman’ and ‘Spider-Man’ roles. However, he ended up portraying the villain Mysterio in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man series within the MCU.
Gyllenhaal was also a contender for the role of the Dark Knight in Christopher Nolan’s films before Christian Bale landed the part. In a recent interview with Screenrant, Gyllenhaal shared his perspective on potentially playing Batman in the newly rebooted Dcu.

Hollywood notables were among those taking to social media to remember Andre Braugher, who died Monday at 61.
Braugher was most known for his roles as Det. Frank Pembleton on NBC’s Homicide: Life on the Street from 1993-98, as well as Capt. Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine from 2013-21. He died following a brief illness, his longtime rep Jennifer Allen told The Hollywood Reporter.
Several former co-stars and industry creatives who Braugher worked with throughout his career, including Terry Crews, David Simon, Chelsea Peretti, Joel McKinnon Miller, Dirk Blocker, Reed Diamond, Mike Royce and Josh Lucas, wrote heartfelt tributes to remember the beloved actor.
“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon,” Crews, who also starred in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, wrote on Instagram Tuesday. “I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent. This hurts. You left us too soon.

10 Things I Hate About Julia Stiles
I hate that her idgaf attitude was not present in more 90s teen rom coms.
I hate that I totally forgot about the movie Save The Last Dance.
I hate that she doesn’t get the respect she deserves.
I hate that I thought she was in that movie Swimfan.
I hate that she got stuck doing generic rom coms.
I hate that her character in the Jason Bourne franchise never got a spin-off.
I hate that I really haven’t seen much of her later work.
I hate that she tricked me into liking Shakespeare as a teen.
But most of all, I hate the way I don’t hate her – not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all. Oh, and I hate that I don’t know what the heck happened to her?
So let’s find out: Wtf Happened to.

Last awards season, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” won almost everything at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Its four victories were for actress Michelle Yeoh, supporting actress Jamie Lee Curtis, supporting actor Ke Huy Quan and best ensemble cast. While the scope of the sweep surprised many, the film’s triumph in the top category was widely expected.
This year, it doesn’t appear likely that any film will match the unprecedented SAG Awards feat achieved by “Everything.” However, I do think that current Gold Derby frontrunner “Oppenheimer” will maintain its lead, and ultimately will win the guild’s prestigious best ensemble prize. Here are five reasons why.
1. It boasts a cast filled with heavyweights.
In addition to the title role portrayed by Cillian Murphy, “Oppenheimer” features a roster of highly respected industry talent. That includes previous SAG Award champions Robert Downey Jr. (TV’s “Ally McBeal”), Emily Blunt...

This generation of filmgoers mostly probably thinks of Irish actor-director Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice.
But there is so much more to Branagh’s career. As a director, he’s dabbled in multiple genres, including fantasy, action, science fiction, thriller, comedy and superhero.
Branaghs career as an actor has been equally as diverse. He’s acted in legal thrillers, Westerns, romantic thrillers, animation, fantasy pics and dramedies.
And then there’s Shakespeare. There’s always Shakespeare. Branagh has a self-professed love of the Bard. He’s acted in and directed...

Around the turn of the century, modern reimaginings of Shakespeare had reached a fever pitch. Audiences were rediscovering the Bard's work through a string of stylish Hollywood films ranging from Baz Luhrmann's bombastic “Romeo + Juliet” to Michael Almereyda's gen-x-courting “Hamlet” to fun teen comedies like “10 Things I Hate About You.” It wasn't long before the trend reached the Indian film industry, which had previously produced only a small selection of Shakespeare adaptations. The charge was led by Vishal Bhardwaj, who received widespread acclaim for 2003's “Maqbool,” his violent take on “Macbeth” featuring Irrfan Khan in the lead role. Transposing the Scottish Play's power struggles to 21st-century Mumbai, Bhardwaj takes a haunting approach to the material, leaning into the bloodshed while playing with the supernatural moodiness and psychological torment of its protagonist. Bhardwaj would continue his Shakespeare trilogy with “Omkara” (“Othello”) in 2006 and “Haider” (“Hamlet”) in 2014, both...

Corinne Masiero in “Captain Marleau” on MHz Choice
One of the perks of increased time at home for the past few years has been discovering a slew of police/detective TV series dramas from about ten European countries. Their protagonists tend to be less action-oriented and more cerebral/intuitive than ours. Most also have some sort of family baggage or tragic backstory, making them moodier and more complex.
But in “Captain Marleau” (“Capitain Marleau”), we get a French super-cop who breaks the mold in a highly entertaining manner. Corinne Masiero’s eponymous troubleshooting Inspector Marleau has been solving knotty crimes for several years on French TV. Season 4 of her career is about to be released in the U.S. and more of her weird brilliance is just fine with me.
Tall, lanky and looking more like a forest-dwelling hobo than a cop, Marleau thrusts herself into each crime scene with the caustic wit of Dr.

Santiago, July 8 (Ians) Board games based on numbers, like Monopoly, Othello and Chutes and Ladders, make young children better at maths, according to a review of studies.
Board games are already known to enhance learning and development including reading and literacy.
The new study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Early Years, showed that for three to nine-year-old the format of number-based board games helps to improve counting, addition, and the ability to recognise if a number is higher or lower than another.
The researchers said children benefit from programmes — or interventions — where they play board games a few times a week supervised by a teacher or another trained adult.
“Board games enhance mathematical abilities for young children,” said lead author Dr Jaime Balladares, from Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, in Chile.
“Using board games can be considered a strategy with potential effects on basic and complex maths skills.

Richard Dreyfuss has criticized the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ new diversity and inclusion requirements, stating that the new standards for Best Picture nominees “make me vomit.”
The four diversity and inclusion guidelines were announced in 2020 and will be applied for the first time to the upcoming 2024 Academy Awards ceremony. Two of the four standards need to be met to receive a nomination for best picture. They include expanding on-screen representation, themes or narrative; increasing representation among creative leadership; providing industry access to underrepresented people and expanding representation in audiences.
The Oscar-winning actor’s remarks came during an interview on the PBS show Firing Line With Margaret Hoover. During the conversation, Dreyfuss talked about civics education in the U.S., politics and the Academy’s diversity policy.
“It’s an art. No one should be telling me as an artist that I have to give in to the latest,...
