The story goes thus: it was 1985, and Hong Kong superstar Jackie Chan, having enjoyed nearly two decades of cinematic success in his native country, wanted to extend his reach into the United States. Chan had already tried to infiltrate America in 1980 with Robert Clouse's film "The Big Brawl," but while it was highly respected by martial arts fans, "Brawl" wasn't the massive hit Chan wanted. Chan had already directed four movies by 1985 but still felt that an American director could translate his fightin' sensibilities for a North American audience more accurately. So, he hired genre filmmaker James Glickenhaus to helm the 1985 actioner "The Protector."
Chan and Glickenhaus butted heads throughout production, as Glickenhaus refused to film fight sequences in a way Chan approved of. At the end of production, Chan merely re-edited the film himself and directed new scenes in the hope of salvaging the project.

There's an entire generation of movie lovers who first encountered Jackie Chan in the "Rush Hour" films. The actor, director and stuntsman didn't have a huge love for the franchise at the time, perhaps because they barely scratched the surface of what he was capable of as a choreographer. Still, his buddy cop films hold a special place in the hearts of countless action fans, and his rapport with co-star Chris Tucker isn't half bad, either.
The "Rush Hour" trilogy hasn't aged the best in the intervening years, thanks in part to its director, Brett Ratner, who was accused of sexual misconduct in 2017. The film's "East meets West" humor would also never fly today, making the franchise something of a time capsule for irreverent, 2000s humor. Still, we could never get enough of Chan and Tucker — that's why we're all still holding out for that potential "Rush Hour 4." While...

France’s Canal+ Group said that it has increased its stake in multi-territory Asian streaming platform Viu to 30%.
“This additional investment underlines the confidence that Canal+ has in Viu and its teams. It also highlights the determination of Canal+ to make Asia its next growth vector, through its strategic partnership with Pccw, and through an acceleration of growth at Viu, a premium streaming service present in Asia, the Middle East and South Asfrica,” the French group said in a statement. Additionally, it said that its investment in Viu now amounted to some $300 million and that it retains an option to increase its stake to 50%.
In June last year, Canal+ announced that it was to pay $200 million for an initial 26.1% stake in Viu and that it would make a total staggered investment of $300 million.
In results published on Friday, Pccw said: “Viu saw 27% growth in revenue in2023 […] propelled...

Vintage martial arts film fans rejoice as the 70s classic, The Shaolin Plot, is set for a 2K restoration release on Blu-ray. The Mvd Entertainment Group has just released a trailer for Arrow Video’s new physical copy release of the Sammo Hung film. The Shaolin Plot comes from director Huang Feng (director of Lady Whirlwind & When Taekwando Strikes), the father of modern Kung Fu films and a mentor to John Woo (Face/Off) and Stanley Tong (Rumble in the Bronx). The cast features Sammo Hung, James Tien and Cassanova Wong.
The release details read,
“In 1977, fight choreographer Sammo Hung made one last film under his mentor, director Huang Feng before graduating to the director’s chair himself with The Iron-Fisted Monk. Call it the Karate Kid Cinematic Universe.
Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, both of whom starred in Karate Kid movies decades apart, are set to reprise their popular characters in Sony Pictures’ latest installment of the iconic coming-of-age martial arts franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle, best known for his well-regarded and award-winning teen television dramas I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing the untitled feature that the studio is positioning as the fusing and continuing the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a Chinese actor to play the erstwhile title character launched today, with the Chan and Macchio kicking things off with an introductory video, seen below.
Rob Lieber, whose credits include Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, wrote the script. The plot line is hiding in the back of the dojo.

In the world of buddy cop comedies, the "Rush Hour" franchise remains a standout. The odd coupling of a reserved chief inspector from Hong Kong and a fast-talking LAPD officer sparked three action-packed, hilarious films popular the world over, amassing over $850 million at the global box office.
Across the three films, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) solve cases in Hong Kong and the U.S., even paying a brief visit to France, typically involving the Triads and government officials. And while the trilogy offers adrenaline-inducing action sequences, it's the comedic chemistry between the two actors that has endured.
When the first installment of "Rush Hour" debuted in 1998, North American audiences had just become acquainted with Chan following the success of "Rumble in the Bronx," while films like "Friday" and "The Fifth Element" highlighted Tucker as an emerging comedic voice. Jackie Chan has signed on to star in A Legend, a martial arts fantasy-adventure movie which will be a sequel to his 2005 movie The Myth.
The sequel to The Myth will find Jackie Chan reprising his role as archaeology expert Professor Chen. “The film’s action begins when he notices that the texture on the artifacts discovered by his students during a glacier expedition is strikingly similar to a jade pendant he had seen in his dreams,” reads the description. “Suspecting that the pendant is acting as a bridge between the realm of dreams and reality, Professor Chen leads his research team on a journey deep into the Glacier Temple, embarking on a fantastical adventure.” A Legend will be directed by Stanley Tong, a long-time collaborator of Chan who has helmed Police Story 3, Rumble in the Bronx, and The Myth.

The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Director Stanley Tong (“Rumble in the Bronx”) is to team up with Jackie Chan for the tenth time on “The Legend.” State media in China report that Chan, who recently reached the top spot in the mainland Chinese box office with aged stuntman comedy “Ride On,” will play an archaeologist on a quest through time and space. With production by Bona Film Group, “The Legend” is pitched as being in the same vein as Tong and Chan’s 2005 effort “The Myth,” which was a fantasy love story. For many, Arnold Schwarzenegger might be synonymous with The Terminator franchise. But his fellow action star Jackie Chan once felt Schwarzenegger might have done very little for James Cameron’s sci-fi phenomenon.
Arnold Schwarzenegger almost wasn’t cast as ‘The Terminator’ Jackie Chan | Kevin Winter/Getty Images
It may be difficult to picture anyone else as the original Terminator in Cameron’s 1984 titular film. But initially, Cameron didn’t see Schwarzenegger in the role of his sinister cyborg. In a 2013 interview Schwarzenegger did with Men’s Health, the actor shared that Cameron saw him as Kyle Reese at first.
But when Schwarzenegger read the script, he found himself more and more fascinated by the Terminator. So when Schwarzenegger met Cameron for lunch, he couldn’t help rattle off his ideas about the film’s villain.
“‘He’s a machine. So everything has to be matter-of-fact.’ I told Jim that,” Schwarzenegger recalled.

Any digital artist well-versed in motion capture technology knows that a successful session relies on the performance of the actor. Donavon Stinson has been a witness and participant in the journey of motion capture since its explosion in popularity starting at the turn of the millennium, acting in an extensive list of film and video game productions that includes "District 9," "The Lord of the Rings" video games, and the "Mass Effect" series. Every kid of a certain age grew up wanting to be Jackie Chan. A legend in Hong Kong and most of the world from the late-seventies on, Jackie Chan also, at long last, became a superstar in North America after the release of his 1996 classic Rumble in the Bronx. Supercop, First Strike and more dubbed versions of his Hong Kong movies would follow, but it was 1998’s Rush Hour, which paired him with Chris Tucker, that made him a phenomenon in the United States. It was as if, at long last, the United States was let in on a secret the rest of the world already knew.
Jackie Chan emerged in the late nineties after a failed attempt to make him into a Bruce Lee clone. Never wanting to be a typical martial arts star, Chan opted to mix comedy and martial arts in a way that made him a...

Four years after the second installment to arguably Jackie Chan’ most popular franchise, the actor would reprise his role as police inspector Chan Ka-Kui in “Police Story 3: Supercop” (or just “Supercop” in some areas). Perhaps due to his busy schedule in front and behind the camera, working on other projects such as the equally successful “Armour of God”-films, Stanley Tong took over directing duties from Chan, who would still be a producer for the project. This collaboration turned out to be quite fruitful for both them, setting the foundation for features such as “Rumble in the Bronx”, which would give the actor the breakthrough with US-American markets after years of trying. Although the previous entries into the franchise had already set quite a high level when it came to action set pieces, “Supercop” would see Chan in the middle of some of the most ambitious and costly action scenes of his career,...

With this production, a smash hit all over the world, Asian superstar Jackie Chan at long last went mainstream in the United States after cracking their movie market, after his previous starring attempts like “Battle Creek Brawl” (1980) and “The Protector” (1986) got him nowhere. Moreover, it went on to win the Best Action Choreography Award at the 15th Hong Kong Film Awards in 1996. “And just like that, I was a big star in America after fifteen years of trying.” Chan later wrote in his autobiography “Never Grow Old”.

While his previous features “The Big Boss” and “Fist of Fury” had established Bruce Lee’s fame in his home country as well as overseas, the two roles also gave him the influence and financial means to start his own production company and finally have the kind of control he had always wanted about the projects he was interested in. Their company’s first project and Lee’s debut as a director was to be “Way of the Dragon”, a movie which, despite its tight budget, introduced movie audiences to a style that would become famous for an entire generation of martial arts-actors such as Jackie Chan and Jet Li. On the outside a typical feature of the genre, including the fight of the good guy against an evil boss and his henchmen, it also combines action sequences, artful fight choreographies as well as a specific kind of Hong Kong...

Marking the 9th collaboration between Jackie Chan and Stanley Tong, which includes films like “Police Story 3” and “Rumble in the Bronx”, “Vanguard” is now finding its place in selected cinemas in the UK starting 11th January, courtesy of Cine Asia, along with a Blu-ray &DVD release. This time, however, the duo seems to really know what they are doing.
The story is as simplistic as usual in martial arts/action films, and revolves around a series of kidnapping cases by a group of what appears to be a elite Middle-Eastern terrorists, starting with a businessman during London’s Chinatown Lunar Celebrations. Tang Huating is the head of international security agency Vanguard, whose employees find themselves involved in a case, that soon unfolds on an international level, and expectedly, soon joins the fight, being Jackie Chan and all.

If nothing else, director Stanley Tong and martial arts superstar Jackie Chan’s latest effort, Vanguard, proves the law of diminishing returns. Not too long ago a Chan film guaranteed an entertaining time at the movies and heaps of awe at what the human body could endure. Now? Not so much.
With the 66-year-old Chan handing off the heavy stunt lifting to younger, spryer actors, the fundamentally weak scripts of action gems like Police Story, Rumble in the Bronx or even Rush Hour become glaringly obvious — and difficult to tolerate without Chan’s brand of kung fu wizardry to distract. "The enemy has moved in." Gravitas has released a new US trailer for the crazy cool action film Vanguard, starring Jackie Chan - who is still making action films despite announcing he would retire. This time he re-teams with the Hk director of his classic action films Supercop, Supercop 2, Rumble in the Bronx, and First Strike - Stanley Tong. An accountant is threatened by the world's deadliest mercenary organization and Covert security company Vanguard is the last hope of survival for him. Of course. This is basically a Michael Bay film made by a Hong Kong director instead. Also starring Yang Yang, Miya Muqi, Lun Ai, Ruohan Xu, and Zhengting Zhu. As brainless as this movie will be, I must admit it looks like a massive amount of explosive action fun - with drones and lions and gatling guns and more. Might be worth a watch. Here's the new...

All the world loves Jackie Chan, whose cinematic action pictures bridge the gap between silent-era virtuosity and slick modernity. As light comedy entertainment these first two Police Story smash ‘n’ bash epics of eye-popping jeopardy are suitable as ‘family entertainment’ as well. Jackie is a marvelous hero, while Maggie Cheung is an old fashioned girl who doesn’t mind being threatened, kidnapped and occasionally having her scalp split open. You will believe that men can tumble from high roosts onto concrete, and smash through acres of glass countertops without receiving a scratch necessarily going straight to emergency surgery. Criterion has created beautiful new masters, with original soundtracks and extras to make every foolish Jackie Chan fan try some ridiculously dangerous stunt for themselves!

Raymond Chow, the Hong Kong producer who brought Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to the masses as producer of such films as Enter the Dragon, The Chinese Connection, Police Story, Rumble in the Bronx and The Cannonball Run, died today. He was 91.
Chow co-founded Golden Harvest in 1970 and was among the first to bring Hong Kong movies to America and other territories outside Asia. He originally worked as a publicist for Shaw Brothers Studios before making the jump to production in the company led by Run Run Shaw that popularized kung fu movies.

Jackie Chan karate kicks his way back onscreen in The Foreigner! The action movie has Chan playing a humble businessman with a buried past who seeks justice when his daughter is killed in an act of terrorism. Pierce Brosnan also stars, teaming up again with GoldenEye director Martin Campbell.
Here are 5 reasons why you need to check this movie out:
1. The Stunts
Jackie Chan has endured many years of long, hard work and a ton of injuries to establish international success via his early beginnings in Hong Kong's martial arts movie industry. Making his way to North American audiences in 1995 with Rumble in the Bronx, this was the first time we saw an action star do his own stunts as he ran up walls and bounced off cars. It was very impressive and Jackie hasn't slowed down.

If you’re young enough not to remember it directly, you probably have no idea exactly how massive Jackie Chan was in the late 1990s. The action star had been famous in Hong Kong for decades but struggled to break out beyond that when suddenly, a hastily put-together dub by Miramax of Chan’s “Rumble In The Bronx” exploded unexpectedly at the box office. It led to a number of similar hits as well as the absolutely enormous “Rush Hour” series, made in the U.S.

Jackie Chan and Stanley-Tong’s Sixth Film Together
Kung Fu Yoga marks the sixth film that Jackie Chan has made together with director Stanley Tong ( Police Story 3, Rumble in the Bronx, Police Story 4, The Myth and Chinese Zodiac (writing credits) ) .
Kung Fu Yoga is a multi-lingual Chinese-Hindi action adventure comedy, co-produced by Taihe Entertainment (India) and Shinework Pictures (China). It’s the first Indian-Chinese co-produced film with the hope that it sets the trend for future projects together for these two countries.
The film also stars Indian actors Sonu Sood, Disha Patani and Amyra Dastur, as well as Aarif Rahmen aka Aarif Lee ( Bruce Lee, My Brother and L.O.R.D).
Hong Kong star Eric Tsang (Infernal Affairs) also makes a relatively brief but equality important appearance. (Eric Tsang also featured in Jackie Chan’s SkipTrace, Accidental Spy, the Lucky Stars series, and the infamous Armour of God…...

Kung Fu Yoga, which casts the sixtysomething Jackie Chan as a mild-mannered archeologist named (wait for it) Jack Chan, is an exercise in quantity over quality: an attempted return to the star’s Hong Kong action-slapstick roots, randomly assembled from pieces of Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Pink Panther-era caper comedies, and the little-loved mid-2000s Chan vehicle The Myth (for which it serves as a bizarre quasi-remake), with a Lord Of The Rings fantasy battle sequence, a Fast And Furious-type luxury car chase, a Bollywood dance number, and not one, not two, but four different scenes involving CGI animals thrown in for the hell of it. The non-stop cycling of locations, crowd-pleaser modes, and groan-inducing gags makes for some watchable silliness. But Chan, who reunites here with his Police Story 3: Supercop and Rumble In The Bronx director Stanley Tong (who also helmed The Myth), is no longer...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.
