Today is Friday, so let’s check in with Rebecca Black.
If you stopped following the 25-year-old songstress after ‘Friday’ faded from the cultural zeitgeist, then you’ve missed one of the music industry’s most inspiring redemption arcs. More than 11 years after releasing “the worst song ever,” Black is back with her first LP — and the album is getting solid marks from critics and fans alike.
Black’s collection of ten atmospheric pop tunes is titled Let Her Burn. That name can be read as an allusion to all the hate Black received after she recorded “Friday” at age 13. The infamous track was written by the team at Ark Music Factory, but for her new album, Black is penning her own lyrics. She has a writing credit on all of Let Her Burn‘s tracks.

A new report from The Wall Street Journal reveals a heated battle between Ice Cube and Warner Bros. over “Last Friday,” the fourth film in the “Friday” comedy franchise that has been in development for nearly a decade. The two parties agreed to develop “Last Friday” in 2012, with Cube reportedly to be paid $11 million. Disagreements over the script and other issues have delayed the sequel over the years.
As reported by WSJ: “Ice Cube wants Warner Bros., owned by AT&T Inc., to surrender its rights to the ‘Friday’ property and to two other movies he made there — ‘All About the Benjamins’ and ‘The Players Club.’ Warner Bros. replied, calling the demand ‘extortionate’ and saying it won’t release rights to the valuable franchise or any other Ice Cube movies.”

Last March, Ben Nichols found himself in the same predicament as every other working musician: at home with an unusual amount of time on his hands. Fortunately, the singer and principal songwriter of the venerated Memphis band Lucero had just wrapped several weeks of touring in January and February, giving him and the group a financial cushion.
“We would have been in a drastically worse spot if we would’ve taken the winter off and were planning on starting a tour in March,” Nichols says on a call with Rolling Stone.

The Sharks were swarming on ABC this Friday, as the business ventures of Shark Tank topped the individual show demo wars with an 0.8 to win the night. Sharks Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary, Lori Greiner, Daymond John and Barbara Corcoran heard a pitch from a former WNBA player on a sports drink as one highlight.
But the CBS crime drama lineup scored the night’s largest audiences, with MacGyver (0.5), Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods (both an 0.6) all had new shows, drawing a crowd and also doing well in demos.
At Fox, the WWE Friday Night SmackDown scored an 0.5, as the show builds toward the Royal Rumble in a few weeks.
In newsmags, ABC’s 20/20 had an 0.6, easily beating NBC’s Dateline, which had a repeat of Mr. Mayor as its lead-in.

Soon after Netflix’s Strong Black Lead launched in 2018, fans began pitching the marketing team’s social channels on the kind of acquisitions they’d like to see on the service. As viewers gravitated to films like the “Friday” trilogy, “Love and Basketball” and “Love Jones,” the Strong Black Team also noticed a specific recurring hunger for the Black-led sitcoms that ran on broadcast TV — mostly The WB and Upn — in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
“Every time we would post about a new show or anything else that we were talking about in the zeitgeist, we would get people asking about ‘Girlfriends,’ wanting to watch ‘Sister, Sister,’ wanting to watch ‘Moesha,'” says Jasmyn Lawson, who until recently was manager of Strong Black Lead, overseeing its editorial output. DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s The Croods: A New Age looks set to lead the weekend in China where the cume is an estimated $11.7M through its first two days, and pre-sales are solid. This portends an Fss frame of $20M, per Uni, with family uptick throughout. Six other overseas markets are also getting a first look at the prehistoric family pic that’s directed by Joel Crawford, and are expected to round out the offshore session total to $21.6M for a $35.8M global bow when including domestic.
Friday’s $3M China opening was the third-highest for a Hollywood title in the market this year, coming in behind only Tenet and Mulan. It is running ahead of local titles including last week’s champ Caught In Time and Zhang Yimou’s new entry One Second. Word of mouth is strong with a 9.1 on Maoyan and Taopiaopiao as well as an 8.2 on Douban.

There’s no shortage of stuff to watch on Netflix this month, but today is bringing a few new things that you may want to check out. And if you’re a fan of a certain horror anthology show or really enjoy Christmas movies, you’re going to be extra excited about these latest additions.
First of all, American Horror Story: 1984 is joining the platform today, but though it’s sporting a quirky name, it’s actually season 9 of the popular series. And it’s definitely one of the most unique, as 1984 takes a lot of inspiration from classic slasher flicks like Halloween and Friday the 13th, a departure from some of the more cerebral horror of its earlier entries. If you’re looking for a creepy good time, this should do the trick.
Secondly, if you like a good holiday film, you’ll want to check out Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey.

Over the last decade plus, writer-director Christopher Landon has quietly crafted a consistently engaging, stealth career as a filmmaker deeply conversant in the tropes, traditions, and conventions of the horror genre and a willing subverter of those tropes, traditions, and conventions. It ranges from the Rear Window with a coming-of-age combo of Disturbia in 2007, through key contributions to the found footage sub-genre, including Paranormal Activity 2-4 and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, through the less successful teen comedy-undead hybrid of Scouts Guide to the Apocalypse, to the double career triumph of Happy Death Day and Happy Death Day 2U. His latest genre contribution, Freaky, a Freaky Friday meets Friday the 13th horror-comedy, doesn’t quite the Happy Death Day series for its brilliantly absurdist riff(s)...

Friday The 13th meets Freaky Friday in the Vince Vaughn comedic mashup Freaky, from director Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day). It seems an unlikely pair of “Friday” movies and, really, it is the whole genre of teen horror films rather than just the one film. David Fincher conceded that his Netflix series “Mindhunter” is most likely finished, at least for now.
Fincher, who is promoting his upcoming Netflix film “Mank,” said the show proved to be very expensive and that the show was taxing on him personally.
“It’s a 90-hour work week. It absorbs everything in your life. We talked about ‘Finish ‘Mank’ and then see how you feel,” but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic...

When I got done, I was pretty exhausted, and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season three,'” Fincher said in an interview with Vulture Friday, adding that it was “probably” done. “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was an expensive show. We talked about ‘Finish ‘Mank’ and then see how you feel,” but I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season two. And on some level, you have to be realistic...

Update Sunday 9:04Am after Sunday 6:20Am and Saturday Am post: Even with yesterday’s good news about New York’s plans to reopen cinemas on Oct. 23, albeit sans NYC, we’re still a ways off from seeing the domestic box office back on its feet. Roughly 16% of the nation is still closed: Los Angeles County still needs to open, and San Francisco health officials need to Ok the sale of concessions for exhibitors to come back in the City by the Bay. Oh, and Regal needs to turn its lights back on. Then what we need is a fire-breathing, all appealing tentpole, but one that’s boosted by a mega 360-degree mega marketing campaign.
For now independent distributors on a budget are braving the way and providing exhibition with titles in an effort to keep the lights on.
Open Road’s Liam Neeson action pic Honest Thief led Friday with $1.3M at 2,425 theaters,...

Match #1: Cesaro def. Gran Metalik The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
Shinsuke Nakamura & Cesaro continued to frustrate Lucha House Party and ignited friction among the team. The King of the Ropes almost pulled off the win with an aerial assault, but Cesaro got his knees up on the final splash. Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown was an oasis in the rerun desert on Friday, serving as one of the few bits of original programming. The competition featured the debut of The Thunderdome, a mini-arena inside Florida’s Amway Center, and brought home a solid 0.6 in demos.
The SmackDown also followed up with Sonya Deville, whose kidnapping was a recent storyline on the show. It also saw The Fiend and impresario Vince McMahon face off in a heated moment.
The only other original programming on the night was at The CW, where Being Reuben, the reality show story of a boy makeup influencer, continued to lag, drawing 0.0 for its two half-hour segments.
The rest of the network fare on Friday was reruns, repeats, and encore performances.

Matt Riddle hasn’t shied away from a challenge since making his SmackDown debut, and The Original Bro faced one of his most difficult tests in a battle with Sheamus. Spoiler Alert: This article contains details from tonight’s season 1 finale episode of HBO’s Perry Mason.
It’s a mistrial and the court goes wild.
As rich and thrilling as this Great Depression noir HBO series was with sublime acting all around — especially Matthew Rhys’ turn as the P.I.-turned-attorney who overcompensates for his demons and mediocrity with his “eureka!” discoverings — the Perry Mason case of who killed baby Charlie Dodson was rather long-winded.
Sure, we weren’t fully convinced that Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) was completely innocent.
However, through various Byzantine rabbit holes explored by Mason, his gal Friday Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and his sidekick investigator Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham), our title character discovered that the Radiant Assembly of God was to blame for the kidnapping of Charlie, with Detective Ennis (Andrew Howard) orchestrating all the murders, down to taking the church’s Elder Seidel (Taylor Nichols) out.

“I was saying to myself months prior to reading the script, ‘Wow, it’s really crazy in all of these years being in the industry, I’ve never done a thriller,’” Long tells Variety, explaining how the project landed in her lap. “So, ultimately, I decided this was a great opportunity to ask for a producer credit, to be involved in the beginning, to help with casting, to have ideas about the script and Netflix was very supportive of that.”

Friday the 13th fans will have plenty to celebrate this Halloween as a new Blu-ray box set containing every movie in the series is coming out in October. This bumper collection, which spans a whopping 16 discs, is the handiwork of Scream Factory.
It doesn’t take a math whizz to work out that there are more discs in that complication than there are Friday the 13th movies in the franchise. Including 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason, there’ve been 12 instalments in the slasher saga to date, so this new box set will likely contain at least four disc’s worth of special features.
According to Bloody Disgusting, the collection will come with exclusive bonus content such as new commentary tracks for Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. The unrated cut of the ninth movie, Jason Goes to Hell, is also said to be included but the full list of extras is yet to be revealed.

On yet another rerun-heavy night, ABC’s Shark Tank repeat was the overall winner. Although it tied in the demo rankings with Fox’s WWE Friday Night SmackDown and a repeat of ABC’s 20/20 newsmag, Shark Tank had the largest P2+ at 3238 to take the crown.
The Shark Tank repeat had a rare event – an entrepreneur who turned down bids from several sharks. David Scharfman didn’t like the investment offers for his Just The Cheese company from Mark Cuban, Kevin O’Leary and Lori Greiner. The company produces bars that mimic the crunchy cheese from a grilled cheese sandwich. He was seeking $500,000 and offered 5% equity in return.
The ABC bandwagon continued rolling with a repeat episode of 20/20, which also scored an 0.5 with its show focusing on Kimberly Mays, a woman who was switched at birth.

A group of U.K. film workers have set up a ‘Film and TV Behind the Scenes Assistance Fund’ to help their co-workers in need.
The brainchild of location manager Vinnie Jassal (“Kingsman: The Golden Circle”) and co-owner of supply company Spotless H20 Georgette Turner (“Wonder Woman 1984”), the fund was originally set up to help junior members of location departments who became out of work because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Another location manager, Ben Ahmed (“Hanna”), came up with the idea of basing the fund on ‘Friday Fiver,’ a popular on-set game where crew put £5 ($6.25) into a pot and the name drawn out of a hat wins all.
The fund was created in March as productions began shutting down across the U.K. The ‘Friday Fiver’ scheme quickly became a success with up to 7,000 unemployed film and television industry workers playing each week. Around 80% of the pot goes to the winner,...

On Friday, “The Office” proved how far some older shows will go to wipe their slate clean of racially insensitive material, by re-editing one of its episodes to remove a scene featuring a character in blackface. That came the same week that other sitcoms — including “Community” “Scrubs” and “30 Rock” — all had episodes pulled that included characters in blackface. Those subtractions come amid a larger push that has forced the producers and distributors of older shows to re-evaluate their content for things that may have seemed fine years ago, but look badly outdated in 2020. The decision to pull or re-edit episodes, or in some cases add a disclaimer, is often a collaborative one. At least, that’s the desirable approach. Even more desirable would be not waiting for a moment of public backlash to right old wrongs. Also Read: 'The Office' Season 9 Christmas Episode Re-Edited to Remove Blackface...

Blumhouse may be best known for their low-risk/high-reward model of filmmaking that’s seen them release a steady stream of hugely-profitable horror movies over the last decade, but in recent years the production company have slowly but surely been moving towards rebooting established properties as well as developing original projects.
The subtle change in their business model has already reaped huge rewards, with M. Night Shyamalan’s Split making nearly $280 million at the box office on a budget of just $9 million, and while the sequel was twice as expensive and half as good, Glass still managed to rake in almost $250 million globally.
Following the self-inflicted implosion of the Dark Universe, Blumhouse have also moved into the Universal Monsters business, and their approach is already paying huge dividends, as The Invisible Man scored widespread critical acclaim and recouped the $7 million production costs eighteen times over in theaters.

Black filmmakers, creators and actors have, for years, worked to portray the gamut of black fatherhood on screen and dispel societal prejudices of the no good, or absentee black father. Here’s a list of just some of the best representations of black fatherhood and father figures on the big screen.
Furious Styles (“Boyz n the Hood”) Laurence Fishburne held nothing back, and dropped some serious knowledge as Furious Styles, the father of Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Tre in “Boyz n the Hood.” Whether it was preaching about gentrification and the plight of the crack epidemic or talking Tre down from making seeking revenge with a gun, Furious did whatever necessary to ensure his son became a man growing up in the Crenshaw ghetto of Los Angeles.
