Three-time Emmy nominee Melanie Lynskey has been confirmed as starring in “Pike River,” the upcoming dramatic thriller set and shot in New Zealand and centered around one of the country’s worst disasters in modern history.
Signature Entertainment has unveiled a first look of Lynskey alongside co-star Robyn Malcolm, both of whom had been rumoured in the New Zealand press as the film’s lead cast. Lucy Lawless (“Xena: Warrior Princess”) also stars. Signature will launch international sales at the Cannes Film Market.
Directed by Robert Sarkies (“Out of the Blue”) from a script by Fiona Samuel (“Consent”), “Pike River” focuses on the true story of Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse, two women whose friendship empowered them to fight for justice after the Pike River Mine tragedy in 2010, which took the lives of 29 men underground. The feature is produced by Vicky Pope and Timothy White (“I Am Mother”).

The thin line between cheating death and chasing it appears to have been smudged, repeatedly, by maverick video journalist Margaret Moth, the subject of first-time filmmaker Lucy Lawless’ fascinating documentary “Never Look Away.” At least, that’s the impression we’re left with at the end of this compact yet complex portrait of a singularly and aggressively unconventional war correspondent who inspired equal measures of admiration and anxiety among her friends, colleagues and lovers throughout her 20 years of assignments in the world’s trouble spots — Baghdad, Sarajevo, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Zaire, you name it, she was there — for CNN.
Something of an enigma even to those closest to her — “I never fully understood what was ticking inside of her” is a comment typical of responses by interviewees questioned by an off-camera Lawless — Moth was fond of proudly proclaiming, “I live life to the fullest.” But it was a life she repeatedly risked by going places,...

If you watched TV shows in the late 90s and early 2000s, you will remember that most popular shows did not focus on a consistent plot. Each episode told its own arc and there was no need to know the characters’ backstory.
It was a pretty smart move: a person could jump into the show at any time. However, one series changed the way the TV projects were made – Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Today, Fewer and Fewer Viewers Remember Buffy
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is Joss Whedon's cult series about a high school girl who leads a double life. During the day she studies and spends time with her friends Xander and Willow, and at night she goes out into the abandoned streets of the city and the cemetery to kill demons.
Today, only hardcore fans in their 30s seem to remember Buffy, despite the show’s cult status.

A stuntwoman, stunt coordinator and actor, Zoë Bell (Kill Bill, Death Proof) is on board to direct the upcoming action-survival thriller Free Fall, Variety has reported this morning.
Zachary Levi (Shazam) will star in the upcoming film. From XYZ Films, Free Fall “tells the story of a father’s attempt to reconcile with his estranged daughter on a rock-climbing trip that turns deadly as an accident leaves them stranded hundreds of feet in the air.”
Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker wrote the screenplay.
“This script is the perfect combo of heartfelt and heart-stopping,” Zoë Bell said in a statement shared by Variety. “Between the producing team, the cast and the New Zealand crews, words don’t do justice to how thrilled I am to be bringing this film home.”
Producers Tom Hern and Nua Finau said, “We are stoked to be teaming up with the guys at XYZ again...

Musical episodes of TV shows weren’t invented by Buffy the Vampire Slayer, nor by Xena: Warrior Princess either. But it was Xena that came up with a way of doing musical episodes that was incredibly effective, and Buffy that perfected it, producing a musical that has been a touchstone for TV ever since.
Some TV shows are designed to be a musical every week, of course, from Glee to Schmigadoon! to Flight of the Conchords. But there is also a fairly long-standing tradition of non-musical shows including musical episodes from time to time.
It might seem like having characters who do not normally sing randomly burst into song would be restricted to science fiction and fantasy, in which an invented reason can be provided for the singing, but plenty of non-sci fi and fantasy shows have done musicals either by making the whole thing take place inside someone’s...

New Zealand actor Antony Starr became a household name after starring as the deranged and overpowered Homelander in Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys. Starr’s character is the antagonist of the show in which most characters are anti-heroes. Based on a comic book of the same name, Starr’s performance in The Boys gained particular praise.
Antony Starr’s deranged Superman character has been the subject of many memes and think pieces, especially due to some purely evil sequences. The actor mentioned how he enjoyed filming one such scene in season one of the show. Spoilers ahead.

Both distributors have committed to theatrical releases in the territories. Kaleidoscope will also take over rest of world sales. The film is set to have additional screenings at SXSW this weekend.

“I think there’s a lot of discoveries in there,” Sundance Senior Nonfiction Programmer Basil Tsiokos says of the lineup revealed on Wednesday. “It’s a nice blend of new filmmakers and alumni, lots of different kinds of approaches to filmmaking… There’s biodocs, but there’s also films that are political. There’s films that are dealing with the environment. There’s lots of other things happening, so it’s a nice mix we think.”

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

The episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? covering The Grudge (2004) was Written and Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
If there was one thing the early noughties had in an abundance, especially within the horror genre, it was remakes. We were graced with reboots, or re-imaginings, whatever you want to call them, of the likes of Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, The Amityville Horror, House of Wax, Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake from 2007 and The Ring. However, despite the decent quality of those examples, well most of them, one thing that stands out in the film we’re focusing on today, The Grudge (watch it Here), is the fact that the original’s director, Takashi Shimizu, chose to also take on the remake. As my husband groans in agony, I, with a song in my heart, say I’m happy — once more with feeling — whenever a non-musical show has a musical episode. When I researched this article, I found the same split among critics and audiences. There are those who feel like a musical episode is cheesy and out of place – who breaks out into song, anyway? And, admittedly, this has been the case with some. However, a song can progress a plot in a fraction of the time dialogue can, and when done well, can be a standout episode of a favorite series. There were quite a few to choose from, and it was tough to pick.
I chose to stick to live-action series. “The Simpsons” and “South Park” are among animated programs that have had memorable musical episodes, but it’s a different factor for actors and actresses to break into song.

Live or die. The choice is yours. But if you reach ten sequels, shit’s probably going to get weird. This week, the Saw franchise returns with Saw X. Which means people really like to see other people tortured and I’m judging every single one of us. It also means the Saw franchise has done something quite special. Not many horror franchises make it this long. Not even Freddy himself has crossed the tenth movie finish line. Scream. Evil Dead. Child’s Play. Paranormal Activity. The Conjuring. Even when you include the spinoffs, none of them have hit ten films!
But Saw X isn’t the first horror franchise to reach that landmark. So, let’s play a game and take a look at how other franchises have fared in their milestone tenth installments…
Jason X (2001)
Walk into one room and bemoan Jason X and everyone will laugh and agree.

August isn't especially famous for its great movies. As months go, the eighth one on the calendar has often been a bit of a wasteland for Hollywood, as blockbusters peter off, kids have a lot less free time and money, and studio executives need to find somewhere to dump their proverbial dead bodies.
If you want a good example, you can pretty much throw a dart at any year after "Jaws" popularized the concept of summer blockbuster season. For example, let's take a look at 1993. 30 years ago, August was a month for dreck comedies like "Son of the Pink Panther," family film misfires like "Father Hood" and "Surf Ninjas," and the weird-ass "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday."
But then again, there are exceptions to every rule. There were also a few excellent motion pictures in August 1993. The increasingly timeless classic "The Fugitive" came out that month, along with...

Montserrat Luna-Ballantyne is walking in circles, picket sign raised high, with a scant group outside an NBCUniversal gate on a Thursday morning that is beginning to turn warm. The striking Writers Guild of America member (With Love) comes to NBCUniversal frequently — it’s nearby to where to she lives, and she can take the bus — but this morning is slightly different, less dutiful, than a typical three-hour shift.
As songs like Sixpence None the Richer’s “Kiss Me” and Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn” play on a speaker at the gate, Luna-Ballantyne is doing the circuit, from one sidewalk to another, nearby one writer in a Xena: Warrior Princess t-shirt and another in a spaghetti strap dress. She herself is wearing butterfly clips, a choker and earrings shaped like the cartoon cat Luna from Sailor Moon. “I enjoy coming to themed pickets — it mixes it up a little bit,” she says while pausing.

Adele Lim is anxious to hear my recap of the previous night’s screening of Joy Ride when she pipes in from her home office in early June. Not only is it the screenwriter’s directorial debut, but it’s a bawdy, R-rated buddy comedy — the type of flick that rarely inspires the same reaction in a sparsely populated room of journalists as it does in theaters filled with friends. So she’s heartened to learn about the contagious laughter from one attendee. “You just need one unhinged bitch,” she says, “then everybody’s like, ‘Greenlight the party!'”
Lim, once a journeywoman TV scribe, has segued into film in a way that has made her a sought-after voice and even an accidental firebrand. Fresh voices can breathe new life into an old idea, which is why the majority of Evil Dead Rise‘s cast and crew outside of producers Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert Tapert are newcomers to the franchise. Production designer Nick Bassett and cinematographer Dave Garbett, however, notably worked together on Ash vs Evil Dead before being summoned back by the Necronomicon for the series’s latest installment.
Bassett’s connection to the Evil Dead extended family dates back to the mid-’90s, when Tapert was producing Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess in Auckland, New Zealand, where Bassett is based. “A big part of my film history, really, is with those guys, especially Rob,” he says, crediting Tapert with giving him his break.

It's astonishing the longevity of the "Evil Dead" series, given how deliberately thin the original film's mythology was. In Sam Raimi's 1981 low-budget classic, "The Evil Dead," a group of college kids, including the acerbic Ash (Bruce Campbell) hole up in a remote forest cabin for the usual reasons, when they find an evil-looking book in the basement -- the Necronomicon -- and a mysterious tape recorder. Playing back the tape, they hear evil incantations from the book, read by the cabin's previous tenant. The spell awakens evil monsters who kill the college kids and are generally a nuisance to Ash.
In the 1987 sequel-cum-remake, "Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn," it's further established that a second spell can banish the monsters back to Hell ... and also throw Ash back in time to the 14th century. The third film in the series, 1993's "Army of Darkness," takes place in the distant past,...

The man. The myth. The chin. Bruce Campbell is one of the most beloved cult TV and film stars in existence, and he's going to be bringing his special brand of bravado to 22 different U.S. cities starting Wednesday, April 5, 2023. The guy behind Ash Williams of "Evil Dead," Elvis of "Bubba Ho-Tep," and Brisco County, Jr. himself, Campbell will be touring with Bruce-o-rama, a two-part evening that's sure to be a bigger blast than a boomstick to the butt. The shows will start with an interactive game of "Last Fan Standing," a game show where everyone in the audience gets to play and test their knowledge of all things fantasy, horror, sci-fi, superheroes, and gaming. After that, they'll show a cult film of Campbell's and do a pre-screening Q&a.
Tickets are available on the Bruce-o-rama website, with special fan packages available that include a chainsaw autographed by Campbell himself.

Detroit-manufactured Bruce Campbell is a cult legend who sawed his way into every genre. Evil Dead Rise, the fifth installment of the franchise most associated with the actor, opens a new book on April 21, and it will be the first not to lead with his chin. He isn’t taunting the sacred geometry of the “Necronomicon Ex-Mortis,” Campbell was busy. He is always busy. He has authored novels, comic books, and screenplays, and has directed productions on big screens and small. Campbell is the star attraction of several franchise fandoms, beloved at the Comic-Con circuit and, believe it or else, crooned Duran Duran’s “Hungry Like the Wolf” for an Old Spice commercial, besides hosting the short-lived Ripley’s Believe It or Not.

No one can say that 2022 didn't showcase a plethora of TV series with authentically shown LGBTQ characters at the forefront, and for that, we're cheering.

It was a time of myth and legend. A time of ancient gods. It was the ‘90s and some of the biggest shows on TV were Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, starring Kevin Sorbo, and its spinoff Xena: Warrior Princess, starring Lucy Lawless. Following the exploits of heroes loosely inspired by Greco-Roman mythology, both series ran for six seasons in syndication and were so popular that other companies in the entertainment industry were looking to cash in.
One of them was Saban Entertainment, most famous for creating the mega hit Power Rangers. According to longtime Saban Entertainment producer Robert Hughes, who spoke to this author in 2013 about his time working at Saban, the company was intrigued by the idea of doing a “juvenile version” of Hercules and Xena. The hope was that a series could be developed that was different enough but strongly reminiscent of those shows. The problem was that...

Fantasy is all the rage on television. Sure, the genre has been popular before, and each decade has given us hugely influential and fantastic stories of magic and fantastical creatures, from "Xena: Warrior Princess" to "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." But when "Game of Thrones" exploded onto the scene with a mature, gory, politically charged fantasy story, it kickstarted a fantasy TV race, forcing every studio and streaming service to run and make their own fantasy epic, no matter how much they had to pay for it.
Meanwhile, animation has always been at the forefront of fantasy television. There were Saturday morning cartoons like "Dungeons & Dragons" and "He-Man," shows like "Gargoyles" that focused more on worldbuilding and sequential storytelling, and also "Dragon Age: Absolution" and "The Dragon Prince," which deliver the kind of epic fantasy storytelling we commonly only see on the big screen.
And then there's "The Legend of Vox Machina.

With only its second season underway, Prime Video’s animated adult fantasy The Legend of Vox Machina is proving to be one of the streamer’s latest and fruitful ventures into the medium and geek culture-at-large.
Debuting in 2022, its critically acclaimed first season — largely funded through a kickstarer campaign and produced in partnership with Amazon Studios and Titmouse — arrived in the same year as a few other epic, sprawling fantasy TV series. Most notably His Dark Materials, The Sandman, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon. Fantastical elements have been part of television since 1964's "Bewitched" and 1965's "I Dream of Jeannie. In the following decades, the genre's popularity has only grown, moving beyond family-friendly sitcoms. The '90s brought us "Hercules" and "Xena: Warrior Princess." The 2000s ushered in the massive cultural phenomenon of "Lost." The world of fantasy television is wonderfully expansive, featuring some of the most critically-acclaimed television -- from philosophical comedies like "The Good Place" to time travel romantic dramas like "Outlander," to high fantasy tales of intrigue and betrayal like "House of the Dragon." For every beloved series, there's a critically-panned fantasy flop. Every "Game of Thrones" season 1, there's a "Game of Thrones" season 8.

"Cobra Kai" is such a phenomenon that when its initial streaming service, YouTube Red, crashed and burned, Netflix swooped in with the renewal. What started as a show subverting the "Karate Kid" franchise by picking up the story from the point of view of middle-aged former villain Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), transformed over five seasons into a sprawling mini-epic involving Lawrence, former archrival Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio), their families, a whole new generation of karate students, and the return of several old enemies and allies who cannot let the past go.

This article contains major spoilers for "Terrifier 2."
You've all seen the headlines by now. Known as the horror movie responsible for making people faint and even vomit in theaters across the country, "Terrifier 2" has become this surprise unprecedented hit in the world of independent horror. Word of mouth regarding director Damien Leone's unrated splatter flick has quickly spread among gore fiends, in addition to people outside of the horror bubble.
What was initially devised as a one-week theatrical release is now going on week four, as more folks discover the sadistic mayhem of Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton). Where your traditional slashers like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers will slash and dash you, Art will take his sweet, sweet time. He's a pantomime boogeyman who revels in flaying your body to grotesque lengths, courtesy of the film's jaw-dropping practical makeup effects.
Make no mistake, the gore is appropriately hardcore.
