Emma Stone, who just won a BAFTA for her performance in “Poor Things” and is nominated for an Oscar, is in talks to reunite with Yorgos Lanthimos on his remake of South Korean fantasy comedy “Save the Green Planet.”
The project, which is expected to start shooting in the summer in the U.K. and New York, has been in the works for several years. Jang Joon-hwan, who directed the original South Korean movie, was previously attached to helm the English-language remake, based on a screenplay by Will Tracy, whose credits include HBO’s “Succession” and Searchlight’s “The Menu.”
An eccentric black comedy, the story of “Save the Green Planet” revolves around a disillusioned young man who captures and tortures a businessman whom he believes to be part of an alien invasion. A battle of wits ensues between the captor, his devoted girlfriend, the businessman and a private detective.

The late Friends actor Matthew Perry was honored at the 2023 Emmy Awards during its In Memoriam on Monday night.
Singer Charlie Puth and duo The War and Treaty performed a rendition of Puth and Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again” as photos of late television stars were shown, including Lance Reddick, Angela Lansbury, Stephen “Twitch” Boss and Norman Lear.
As the song came to a close, the singers transitioned into the Friends theme song, “I’ll Be There for You” by The Rembrandts. More stars flashed across the screen before Perry was honored at the end.
Perry died in October from “acute effects of ketamine.” The Los Angeles Police Department closed its investigation into the 54-year-old actor’s death earlier this month.
The cast and crew of Friends have honored Perry individually and together, with his five other costars releasing a joint statement after his passing.

The TV Academy tonight paid poignant tribute to those who’ve passed away in the past 12 months. Among the big names highlighted by the In Memoriam segment were Norman Lear, Matthew Perry, Angela Lansbury and Andre Braugher.
Charlie Puth and husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty accompanied this year’s “In Memoriam” video montage as it unspooled with a rendition of “See You Again.” The segment started off with Lear and ended with Perry.
Soon after it aired on Fox, fans took to social media to express their disapproval over omissions, the biggest being Ryan O’Neal. Known for his film work, O’Neal, who died December 8, also co-starred on the TV series Peyton Place from 1964-69.
O’Neal’s son Patrick said on Twitter that he was “sad and mad” over the decision to exclude his dad from the tribute.

This year’s slate of eight Best New Artist hopefuls at the Grammys is one of the strongest of the past decade, mixing big commercial names like Ice Spice and Noah Kahan with some of the most buzzworthy new musicians around like Fred Again, Victoria Monét and Gracie Abrams. Perhaps what stands out the most, though, is how much the category was shaken up when the nominations were revealed. What was thought to be a safe bet for Ice Spice has suddenly opened up into what’s one of the strongest categories in the general field this year.
A big part of that was the rise of Monét, whom many didn’t even consider a shoo-in for a nomination. Come Grammy nominations morning, though, she racked up a very impressive set of seven bids, including a sweep in the R&b field, a crucial Best Engineered Album nom, and what probably shocked people the most,...

The Lord of the Rings worldbuilding is as dense as they come, with Middle Earth having its own intricate histories, complicated languages to master, and involved geopolitics.
Between that core trilogy, The Hobbit and the imposing tome that is The Silmarillion, creator J.R.R. Tolkien really thought it all through. Yet even he left some wiggle room for expansion.
As such, video games have been trying for decades to plug existing gaps in the mythos, and to put their own authorial stamp on this rich saga. Indeed, we’ve had developers fleshing out everything from the backstory of Gollum to the afterlife of Celebrimbor and the various conflicts that occurred on the sidelines while Frodo & Sam were journeying to Mount Doom.
Although these spin-offs have, to varying degrees of success, enriched our knowledge of what happened before and during The War of the Ring, we know comparatively little of its aftermath.

Last year the Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter Zach Bryan had one of pop’s biggest left-field hits with “Something in the Orange,” a portrait of regret that was as notable for its bare-bones instrumentation as it was for Bryan’s haunted vocal performance. Since that track peaked at Number 10 on the Hot 100, the 27-year-old Navy veteran has carved out a singular place in modern popular music, blending Music Row’s hooky storytelling with heartland rock’s unvarnished portraits of modern Americana and insurgent country’s back-to-basics ideals.

On the brink of turning 70, Ken Burns will release his very first film, “Working in Rural New England,” which he made as an undergraduate at Hampshire College. The 28-minute docu will be released July 25 on Unum, Burn’s American history digital platform on PBS.
About Old Sturbridge Village, an outdoor history museum in Massachusetts that re-creates life in rural New England from 1790 through the 1830s, the docu was commissioned by the museum in 1973. The film served as Burns’ senior thesis at the liberal arts college in nearby Amherst, Mass. Accompanying the doc on Unum is a pre-recorded conversation between Burns and New York Times literary critic A.O. Scott.
“It in some ways does not look like a Ken Burns film,” Scott says during his conversation with Burns. “It’s moving images in the present day, in color. So, it doesn’t immediately say to a modern viewer, a film by Ken Burns.

In the 1990s, there was an undeniable boom of incredibly successful sitcoms. The decade was flooded with sitcoms that would ultimately define that era of television. In just 10 years, viewers became glued to shows that have stood the test of time, like "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," "Seinfeld," "Frasier," "Friends," and many more. Amongst the variety of sitcoms on TV, "Boy Meets World" was an instant hit, especially for younger audiences. The coming-of-age show, which first aired in 1993, followed the day-to-day lives of Cory Matthews (Ben Savage), Cory's older brother Eric Matthews (Will Friedle), Topanga Lawrence (Danielle Fishel), and Shawn Hunter (Rider Strong) as they navigated life from adolescence to young adulthood.

High-flying Madrid-based Caballo Films, behind Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The Beasts” and “Riot Police” and Borja Soler’s “The Route,” has put into development a fiction series adaptation of Mabel Lozano’s prized same-titled non-fiction work.
Shaping up as a deep drill-down into the growth of prostitution in Spain into large-scale organized crime, “El Proxeneta” packs a powerful talent package of creator-writers Isabel Peña, co-writer of Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “As Bestas” and “Riot Police,” and Eduardo Villanueva, a co-scribe on “Riot Police” and producer on “Stockholm.”

During a recent Gold Derby video interview, news and features editor Ray Richmond spoke in-depth with Ken Burns about the three-part, six-hour documentary film he co-produced and co-directed for PBS, “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” which is eligible at the 2023 Emmy Awards. Watch the full video above and read the complete interview transcript below.
“I will never work on a more important film than this one,” declares Burns of “The U.S. and the Holocaust,” the film documentary he co-produced and co-directed (with frequent collaborators Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein) and released last September. Coming from Burns, that’s a mouthful, considering he is perhaps the most celebrated documentarian of our time and the foremost chronicler of the American experience. He’s a filmmaker who is responsible for many of the most treasured nonfiction series and biographies ever put to film, among them “The Civil War,” “Baseball,” “Jazz,” “Jackie Robinson” and “The Vietnam War.

Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter has traded in his helmet for a baton. Today, April 7th, the French musician released his first solo work since the group’s breakup, an orchestral album called Mythologies.
The project was initially commissioned in 2019 by choreographer Angelin Preljocaj for a ballet of the same name. The end result is a 90-minute composition that “reveals a love of Baroque music and hints to traces of American minimalism,” according to a press release. Take a listen below.
After 28 years together, Daft Punk formally called it quits in February 2021. In a recent interview, Bangalter shed light on the reason for their breakup, saying he became increasingly uncomfortable with the convergence of music and technology.
On May 12th, Daft Punk will release a 10th anniversary edition of their final album, Random Access Memories. In the meantime, revisit their 10 most memorable musical moments here.

Exclusive: Emmy-winning filmmaker Erika Dilday is joining Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon as co-director and co-producer of the upcoming documentary film Emancipation to Exodus (working title). It’s a long-term commitment – the film about a critical period in the African American experience isn’t expected to air on PBS until 2027.
Dilday’s participation in the project will be as an independent filmmaker – in other words, separate from her role as executive director of American Documentary and executive producer of AmDoc’s PBS series Pov and World Channel’s America ReFramed.
Emancipation to Exodus (wt) explores the African American struggle for freedom and opportunity “from the Civil War and end of slavery, through Reconstruction and the start of the Great Migration out of the south that began in the early 20th century,” according to a release about the film.
Erika Dilday at the IDA Documentary Awards on December 10, 2022 in Los Angeles.

It would make me happy, or at least relieved, to report that Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein’s new PBS documentary The U.S. and the Holocaust was inessential viewing — that this six-hour cautionary tale about what happens when the United States fails to live up to its humanitarian ideals both domestically and on a global stage just didn’t have anything fresh or relevant to say.
Unfortunately, at a moment at which “America First” rhetoric and anti-immigrant, anti-refugee sentiment remain fervent, as one state after another uses coded language to outlaw the teaching of any piece of our history that dares to deviate from a discernibly false narrative of American exceptionalism, The U.S. and the Holocaust stands as one of the most vital projects in Burns’ five-decade relationship with PBS.

The mid 1990s were a wild ride for fans of Kevin Costner. Lawrence Kasdan's 1994 film "Wyatt Earp," often seen as the longer, more turgid version of "Tombstone," was not entirely well-received and lost a boatload of money. A down! He followed it that same year with an intimate veteran drama called "The War," opposite a young Elijah Wood, who received a good deal of praise for his performance. An up! He then made, ahem, a splash with the overwrought and notoriously expensive "Waterworld" in the summer of 1995. "Waterworld," more or less a "Road Warrior" knock-off but at sea, was the most expensive film in history up the that point. It ended up breaking even. It was a blot on Costner's career. A down! Luckily, he chased "Waterworld" with the acclaimed golf romcom "Tin Cup" in 1996. An up!

The 2022 Venice Film Festival has awarded Laura Poitras’ “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” the Golden Lion for Best Film, with Colin Farrell and Cate Blanchett landing the Coppa Volpi for Best Actor and Best Actress.
The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Luca Guadagnino for “Bones and All.” The cannibal love story also saw co-star Taylor Russell win the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best New Young Actor or Actress.
In addition to Farrell, “The Banshees of Inisherin” won the award for Best Screenplay for writer-director Martin McDonagh. The film, which follows an abrupt fallout between two best friends (“In Bruges” co-stars Farrell and Brendan Gleeson), received a 13-minute standing ovation at its Tuesday premiere. Meanwhile, Blanchett won her second Volpi Cup (following her performance as Bob Dylan in 2007’s “I’m Not There”) for playing the world-renowned composer at the center of Todd Field’s “Tár.”

When you hear WWI, trenches and trench warfare often spring to mind. The War Below is based on a true story about World War I but instead of trenches, it is about some clever, skilled tunnelers seeking to sabotage German forces.
World War I, then called the Great War, and the “War to End All Wars,” was a earth-shattering conflict, changing the nature of warfare, remaking the political and physical landscape, and decimating a generation of young men. The War Below is based on the true story of a group of British sewer tunnelers from Yorkshire, nicknamed the “clay-kickers,” who were brought in by “Hellfire Jack” Col. John Norton-Griffiths to help break the stalemate with the German forces in the battle of Messines in 1917. The result of their near-miraculous efforts was a massive explosion under the enemy line,...

From football (the actual footie kind) to monarchy to Michaela Coel, it was a great night to be British at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
Netflix had the biggest night of any streamer or network, with its Queen Elizabeth drama The Crown running a clean sweep of its categories and taking home seven awards. On the comedy side of things, Ted Lasso was nearly as dominant, winning nearly every award it was up for save for writing, directing, and lead actress in a comedy series (all three of which went to HBO Max’s Hacks). Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, and The Queen’s Gambit all split the limited series honors, with the Netflix chess series taking home the big prize.

Global streaming sports platform Dazn and Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldo have closed a multi-project development deal kicking off with “El Presidente,” a docu-series chronicling the former striker’s tenure as part owner of Spanish club Valladolid Fc, which will launch globally on May 20.
Best known for its live sports streams and the headaches it initially caused pay TV broadcasters when it crashed in on the scene in 2015, Dazn is now establishing itself as a platform for high-end sports-based entertainment programming and a service worth keeping during the off-season.
“What this shows you is a commitment to going beyond live sports and making Dazn a designer destination that keeps fans coming back,” senior VP of creative studios and publishing Hugh Sleight explained to Variety in an exclusive interview accompanying Wednesday’s announcement.
Produced by Zoom Sport and Dazn, “El Presidente” is the first of three series the streamer will commission featuring Ronaldo.

How impressive is Ken Burns as a documentarian? Think of it like this: In the 1980s, the Brooklyn-born filmmaker earned Oscar nominations for making compelling docs on the history of a pair of inanimate objects. Granted, “Brooklyn Bridge” and “The Statue of Liberty” were films on America’s strength and exceptionalism as much as they were on the landmarks themselves, but those early projects set Burns on a path to utilize the same kind of majestic storytelling to connect with human subjects, whether dead or alive.
From founding father and U.S. President Thomas Jefferson to celebrated humorist Mark Twain to the wrongly convicted Central Park Five, Burns builds on these legacies by also taking the pulse of the entire nation at the time through comprehensive reporting and a respect for the facts that might be skimmed over by other directors with less time to afford. Even when he was...

Of all the songs President Joe Biden might have quoted during his inaugural address on Wednesday, a song that many people know as a Norah Jones track from a Ken Burns documentary might not have been the first guess.
The song, “American Anthem,” was written by songwriter Gene Scheer and was first sung by Denyce Graves in 1998 for President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton at the Smithsonian Institution during the launch of the “Save America’s Treasures” initiative. It was subsequently performed at other ceremonies, was covered by Patti Labelle and sung by Graves at George W. Bush’s 2005 inauguration; its performance today may tie in with Biden’s unity theme.
Jones’ version dates from 2007 and was featured in “The War,” Burns’ documentary about World War II. Written by Gene Scheer,” it’s an outlier in Jones’ extensive catalog, featured on none of her albums and only available on the series’ soundtrack album.

Samuel L. Jackson’s docuseries “Enslaved” was well under way before this year’s global “Black Lives Matter” movement resurgence, but he admits the project has taken on an urgency for which he wasn’t quite prepared.
“It was serendipitous that it came out at this particular time. That was not a plan,” says Jackson.
The “Avengers” star has narrated documentaries, from Ken Burns’ “The War” to Disney Nature’s “African Cats,” but hadn’t participated creatively until “Enslaved,” which he executive produced with his wife, actor Latanya Richardson Jackson.
