45 years ago, writer/director Don Coscarelli delivered one of the best horror films ever made: Phantasm, a film which spawned three sequels that Coscarelli wrote and directed himself, then a fourth that he wrote with director David Hartman. Earlier this year, we learned that Coscarelli would be celebrating the 45th anniversary of Phantasm by expanding the franchise with a book called Phiction: Tales from the World of Phantasm, which was initially only available as a limited edition hardcover. Don Coscarelli perhaps does not get enough credit for crafting one of horror's most enduring franchises with "Phantasm." Dating back to the sleeper hit from 1979 that introduced audiences to Angus Scrimm's The Tall Man, the series pressed on for five films that premiered periodically all the way through 2016. Coscarelli directed the first four entries personally before handing the reins over to David Hartman for "Ravager". A segment in "V/H/S/99" even paid homage to "Phantasm." Not many franchises can say they got to five movies across nearly four decades.
But what of those who have never taken the plunge into this delightfully strange universe? What of those genre fans who are interested in seeing what Coscarelli dedicated so much of his life to? We're here to make it easy for you to do just that by providing the correct viewing order for the "Phantasm" movies, as well as...

The Phantasm family is back together again for the new brand new music video “Cheyenne,” which comes courtesy of Phantasm star Bill Thornbury and his band Remington Ridge.
Bill Thornbury played Jody in the original horror classic from 1979, a role he reprised for Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead, Phantasm IV: Oblivion, and Phantasm: Ravager.
Of particular note for Phantasm fans, the music video for “Cheyenne” was directed by franchise creator Don Coscarelli and David Hartman, who directed Phantasm: Ravager.
Coscarelli tweets this afternoon, “Many people might remember Bill’s absolute banger of a song from the original Phantasm that he wrote and performed with Reggie Bannister in our film Phantasm… ‘Sitting’ Here At Midnight’! ‘Cheyenne’ is an emotional, rootsy country ballad, telling tales of lost love and fading sunset dreams.”

The Bubba Ho-Tep episode of Wtf Happened to This Adaptation? was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian. Here is the text of Hatfield’s script:
Sometimes you find out that your favorite movies were adaptations of novels. While everyone knows when they are getting a Stephen King adaptation, a lot of the time you won’t know that a movie is based on an existing story until you get hit with it in the credits. Bubba Ho-Tep (watch it Here) is one of those properties. All of the advertising and certainly the feeling of the movie is that it’s a Bruce Campbell and Don Coscarelli movie, but the short story was written by Joe R. Landsdale. It’s a rare thing to see a horror series with near complete creative control from one person. Currently, Damien Leone seems to be in the drivers seat for the Terrifier series that we are certain to get more entries in and I’ve talked about the Chucky/Child’s Play series that Don Mancini is the driving force for. There’s also another Don that’s in charge of another important horror series. Don Coscarelli gave us one of the most original and successful independent films of all time with 1979’s Phantasm. He wrote, directed, shot, and edited that first movie with his dad helping produce it and his mom doing costumes, production design,...

Writer/director Don Coscarelli kicked off a mind-bending horror franchise with his low budget 1979 classic Phantasm, following that up with Phantasm II in 1988 and Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead in 1994. One Phantasm phan who thought they knew where the franchise should go next was Roger Avary – and soon after sharing an Academy Award win with Quentin Tarantino for co-writing the stories that made up Pulp Fiction, Avary started crafting a Phantasm sequel script he called Phantasm 1999. Coscarelli was impressed with what Avary had come up with, and set out to bring Phantasm 1999 to the screen… but it never happened. Nods to the ideas in that script made it into Phantasm: Oblivion and Phantasm: Ravager, but the budget required for Phantasm 1999 (which was also called Phantasm 2013 A.D. and Phantasm’s End as time went on) could never be secured. So find out about the Phantasm movie that never was...

Horror is making money hand over fist right now and you have to imagine that anyone with the rights to a beloved classic horror franchise might be looking at Danny McBride and David Gordon Green’s soft reboot/continuation of Halloween with envious eyes.
Speaking of which, in a Reddit Ama, McBride was asked which franchise he’d like to see back on the big screen and he picked a stone cold cult classic: Phantasm. For those not familiar with the series, it begins with Don Coscarelli’s 1979 original, in which evil undertaker the Tall Man is transforming Earth’s dead into dwarf zombies that will be sent to his planet and used for slave labour (it makes more sense in context!).
Despite landing to mixed reviews, time has been kind to its charms, with contemporary critics praising the film’s surreal narrative and imagery. It eventually did well enough to merit four sequels,...

Though he was just 25 years old when Phantasm hit theaters, many don't know that the cult 1979 horror film was actually director Don Coscarelli's third movie. In fact, at the age of 19, he became the youngest director ever to have a film distributed by a major studio (a statistic that's often been alleged but which I cannot independently confirm) when Universal acquired his teen drama Jim, the World's Greatest for distribution. That film, which was financed by Coscarelli's father -- who put up the money for production after having "a good year in the stock market," in Coscarelli's words -- landed the teenage filmmaker and his co-director Craig Mitchell an office on the studio's lot to finish the movie. It was an unusually auspicious Big Hollywood start to a career that ended up taking a less-mainstream turn as the years went on. "I've been working my way downward ever since,...

Well Go USA Entertainment has announced that it has acquired the North American rights for Don Coscarelli's "Phantasm" horror film series with ambitious re-release plans in the works.
The original 1979 cult classic Phantasm is scoring an all-new 4K restoration. It will be joined by never-before-seen HD restorations of 1994's "Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead" and 1998's "Phantasm IV: Oblivion".
They will joined by the debut of the fifth and final film in the series, 2016's "Phantasm: Ravager". All four films will be made available in remastered, high-definition versions across all cable and digital platforms on October 7th. The remaster of the first film will get a limited theatrical re-release on September 24th, while 'Ravager' will have a day-and-date limited theatrical on October 7th.
A Blu-ray and DVD Collector's Edition set will follow later this year. Sadly there's an obvious hole here, 1988's "Phantasm II," which isn't scoring a...

Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead (1994)
Directed By: Don Coscarelli
Written By: Don Coscarelli
Starring: Reggie Bannister (Reggie), A. Michael Baldwin (Mike), Bill Thornbury (Jody), Angus Scrimm (The Tall Man), Gloria Lynne Henry (Rocky), Kevin Connors (Tim), Cindy Ambuehl (Edna), John Davis Chandler (Henry), Brooks Gardner (Rufus), Irene Roseen (Demon Nurse), Sarah Davis (Tanesha),
“It’s time now boy.” “Phantasm III: Lord of the Dead” takes a different approach entirely than the first two films. The first film relies more on low budget eeriness. The second film keeps some of the atmosphere but has more action and special effects. The third installment injects more comedy than the first two combined. This sequel is also the first that never went to theaters and was straight to video. Even though this film has more weaknesses than its two predecessors, it is still a very enjoyable movie!

This summer will see plenty of comic book movies and assorted blockbusters, but for those who enjoy more genre fare, enter Into the Storm. Opening August 8, the movie follows the town of Silverton as its inhabitants attempt to survive the mother of all tornadoes. The "found footage" thriller stars The Walking Dead's Sarah Wayne Callies as a meteorologist who pairs with a storm chaser (Veep's Matt Walsh) in order to track tornado data. "It's a bit of a contentious marriage of convenience," Callies told USA Today.
Enter The Hobbit's Richard Armitage, who plays an assistant school principal in search of his son during the tornado onslaught. According to director Steven Quale (Final Destination 5), what "Gravity did to space, [Into the Storm] will do to natural phenomena and weather."
While that is quite a boast, Quale apparently got a vote of confidence from his mentor, James Cameron, who, according to the director,...

I’m a bit of secret fan of Phantasm II. Whereas the first film was a lucid waking nightmare, Phantasm II hit its hardest like that great sequel, Aliens, in every single way. Plus, a four barreled shotgun is always freaking cool no matter what. Scream Factory sent along specs, cover art and ordering links for the home video release of that film, and the Empire classic From Beyond, released on March 5th, and March 26th respectively.

Here comes the fourth article in my tribute to Halloween – each article featuring movies from a different horror sub-genre. For this article we’re taking a look at a rather creepy movie monster…the disembodied hand.
I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind when people hear “disembodied hand” is The Addams Family with the classic horror/comedy of Thing. Or maybe they think “Hey, what happened to my hand!!”. Anyway, I always wanted to see the tunnels by which Thing moved through the Addams mansion. Did they consist of smooth, round tubes or perhaps they were just a series of long, wooden boxes with miniature ladders that led upstairs when needed. Maybe Thing had a pneumatic system that sucked him through plastic tubes from location to location? I guess I’ll never solve that brainteaser.
Of course, the unsolvable mystery of Thing’s transportation routes won’t...

You're getting too old for this: 25 years ago, on March 6, 1987, "Lethal Weapon" was released. The buddy-cop thriller not only cemented Mel Gibson's status as a household name after playing good-natured loose-canon (as opposed to now) Martin Riggs, but also created a social phenomenon still relevant to this day: "I'm getting too old for this shit."
The catchphrase, said numerous times throughout the "Lethal Weapon" series by Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), has appeared in many movies over the last 25 years, often times in reference to the put-upon police detective himself. (The recent trailer for "Men In Black 3" features Will Smith uttering a PG variation on Murtaugh's famous one-liner.)
What you might not know? That "Lethal Weapon" wasn't the first film to utilize some form of the defeated turn-of-phrase. From "North by Northwest" and "The Sting" to Murtaugh himself, enjoy a mash-up of movie characters getting too old for this.

Over the next three decades he appeared in numerous films and television productions, often typecast as weasely villains in western and crime productions. Chandler was born in Hinton, West Virginia, on January 28, 1937. He appeared frequently in films and television from the early 1960s. Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.
Saturday
After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).
Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.
As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal.

One of the most hotly anticipated DVD releases of the year is "Phantasm II", simply because the film has never been available in the format before. It's last release was on VHS more than a decade ago. Here is the cover art. This film was certainly a disappointment when it came out, but it's follow up, "Phantasm III", was pretty good, and it's a bit hard to understand what's going on in that film without having seen this one. Watch for it on DVD Sept. 15..
