- Adult Toni Whitney: [voice over narration] Many years ago, a seal named Andre made his first historic swim home and his life became legend. Every winter he lived the life of a gentlemen at the country aquarium. Every Spring my Dad set him free, and every time Andre made the two hundred and fifty mile journey home to spend the Summer with us, his family. By the time Andre was twenty four years old, he could hardly see. But that didn't stop him from completing his final trip. In all the journeys since my youth, and on all the journeys I have ahead of me, I know I'll never find a better friend than Andre.
- Toni: I know you're sad, you miss your mom. But please don't die, I'll be your best friend forever. And I will always take care of you, I promise. I love you.
- Guy on Dock: [about Billy Baker] Careful, Harry! He's mad as a hornet and drunk as skunk!
- Harry Whitney: My favorite combination.
- Thalice: Toni, since when do you like herring? And Harry, why is there herring in the fridge?
- Toni: Oh, it's just for a friend.
- Thalice: A bad-smelling, fish eating, raspberry blowing friend?
- Toni: Good guess, Mom.
- [she and Harry scurry out toward the barn]
- Thalice: [figuring it all out] Harry Whitney, you KNEW that seal was gonna come back here!
- Griff Armstrong: [hears Steve and Paula arguing] Jeez, Harry. I don't know why you're so interested in critters. You got yourself a whole pack of wild ones at home.
- Toni: What do you think went wrong with him and her?
- Harry Whitney: Maybe him and her ain't a him and her.
- Toni: [shocked] I put the dress on the wrong one?
- Adult Toni Whitney: By the time Andre was twenty four years old, he could hardly see. But that didn't stop him from completing his final trip.
- Ellwyn: [on the phone] You don't say. You don't say. You don't say.
- [hangs up]
- Harry Whitney: Alright, Ellwyn, who was it?
- Ellwyn: He didn't say.
- [laughs]
- Ellwyn: You get it?
- Harry Whitney: We get it. We got it the first time you did it. We got it the last forty-seven times you did it. It ain't funny.
- [Paula is listening to the song "Johnny Angel" when Steve enters her bedroom]
- Steve Whitney: 87.
- Paula Whitney: What are you talking about?
- Steve Whitney: [annoyed] Eighty-seven!
- [Steve opens the bedroom window and takes Paula's record off the spindle]
- Paula Whitney: Hey!
- Steve Whitney: You played this song 87 times and I can't stand it anymore!
- [Steve throws the record out the window like a frisbee; Paula tries to get it back, but she's still wearing her hairdryer]
- Paula Whitney: Mom, Steve took my record!
- [Paula's record lands in the backyard where Toni, Grief and Harry are chopping wood]
- Thalice: All right, you two, knock it off!
- Steve Whitney: You're driving me crazy, Paula!
- [Thalice, Paula and Steve continue to argue]
- Griff Armstrong: [to Harry; about his family fighting] Gee, Harry. I can't figure out why you're so interested in critters when you've got yourself a whole pack of wild ones at home.
- [Andre and Steve are eating popcorn and watching TV together]
- Steve Whitney: I'm sick of this. Let's watch a game.
- [Andre objects Steve's decision by blowing a raspberry]
- Steve Whitney: Okay, this is good.
- Harry Whitney: [enters the barn while Paula and Mark are smoking] What the hell are you two doing?
- Paula Whitney: [as she and Mark hide their cigarettes] Nothing, Dad.
- Harry Whitney: Give it here! Give it here!
- Paula Whitney: [hands her father the cigarette and he puts it out]
- Harry Whitney: That's it, Paula! You're grounded for a week and you get out of here now! I don't want to see you back here ever!
- Mark Baker: Look, Mr. Whitney, I'm sorry.
- Harry Whitney: You're sorry all right and you're not fit to be around my daughter.
- Mark Baker: Oh yeah? Well, my dad says... He says you're not fit to be harbor master.
- Harry Whitney: What?
- Mark Baker: He also says that... that you're a big jerk!
- [storms out of the barn]
- Harry Whitney: You stay away from him, Paula. I mean it.
- Paula Whitney: [also storms out of the barn] You don't even know him!
- Harry Whitney: Oh yeah? Like father like son.
- Thalice: [follows Paula as she runs upstairs and starts packing her things] Oh dear!
- Paula Whitney: Dad is so unfair! He doesn't care about me!
- Thalice: [helps her pack] Of course he does. He loves you very much. It's just one of his ways of showing it. You know when you were born he wanted to take front page ad out in the newspaper. I'm not kidding. And he was so mad that the 11th paged all the other birth announcements. Oh, Paula, he so friendly and he still is.
- Paula Whitney: No, he's not! He doesn't care at all and I don't know why you always stand up for him! I hate him! I hate him!
- Thalice: Don't you ever ever say that about your father again! Do you hear me, young lady?
- Paula Whitney: [starts crying and Thalice hugs her]
- Paula Whitney: I'm gonna enter the 4th of July Miss Liberty contest.
- Mark Baker: Oh yeah?
- Paula Whitney: Yup!
- Mark Baker: I bet you'll win.
- Paula Whitney: Thanks. So it must be pretty neat being an only child.
- Mark Baker: I dunno.
- Paula Whitney: My dad and I used to do lots of things together. But no, it's just Toni and that stupid seal. So I'm not even there. Do you like your dad?
- Mark Baker: He's okay, I guess. He was better before my mom had to... had to go away. But he's not prejudiced, you know. He hates everybody.
