In the 1995 movie "Waterworld," Kevin Costner was the draw in more ways than one. To much of the audience, he was still the glamorous movie star who had managed to pull off a blockbuster "Robin Hood" movie despite his inability to successfully nail an English accent. To others, he seemed like he might be a potential trainwreck on the verge of derailment. "Waterworld" had fallen victim to many behind-the-scenes tales of sinking sets, director fights, and Costner rewriting the script to make himself look better. Ultimately, for one reason or another, enough people were curious about the film that it turned a profit. However difficult he may have been behind the scenes, the star turned out to still have it.
Within the movie, however, the person everyone wants to see is Enola, a nine year-old girl whose back tattoo features an encoded map to the last bit of dry land on a post-climate change world.

Based on the 1994 A.S. Byatt short story "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," George Miller's new film "Three Thousand Years of Longing" -- in theaters on August 26 in the United States -- stars Idris Elba as Byatt's titular djinn who appears to a human scholar named Alithea (Tilda Swinton) to grant her wishes in exchange for his freedom. "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye" appeared in a collection of similar short stories that draw heavily from ancient texts and folk tales, linking up themes and characters from works such as the "Epic of Gilgamesh," "One Thousand and One Nights," and "The Canterbury Tales," as well as the works of William Shakespeare, and the myth of Cybele. Miller seemingly matched Byatt's thematic links by including multiple flashback scenes wherein the djinn interacts with figures of the distant past.

"Three Thousand Years of Longing," the centuries-spanning epic and George Miller's first film since "Mad Max: Fury Road," has finally arrived in theaters after a boisterous Cannes debut. However, what many might not know is that it is actually an adaptation of a short story by British writer A.S. Byatt titled "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye," a story published in her 1994 collection of the same name.
While speaking to /Film's Emma Stefansky in an interview, Miller recounted when he first read "The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye." Once he finished the story, he knew that it was a story he had to adapt to the big screen.
"I first came across the story when someone gave me a small anthology of fairy tales that A.S. Byatt had written," the "Happy Feet" director recalled. "One of them was a little longer than the others, about 40 pages, called 'The Djinn in the Nightingale's Eye.

There are no half measures with George Miller. The Australian filmmaker commits everything he has to movies about pigs who wish they were sheepdogs, penguins who wish they were tap dancers, and denizens of post-apocalyptic wastelands who wish only for the next drop of water, the next scavenge-able ghost town, the next souped-up war rig full of guzzolene to ride straight to Valhalla, shiny and chrome. It's been seven years since Miller blazed back onto the scene with the breathtaking "Mad Max: Fury Road," which carved his place in film history as the kind of guy who knows exactly how to squeeze every last drop of adrenaline from every unbelievable action scene. His newest film, the Arabian Nights-influenced fairytale romance "Three Thousand Years of Longing," could not be more different.

"And where would we find all those giant turtles?" An official trailer has debuted for an indie comedy titled The Secret Society For Slow Romance, the latest from Brooklyn-based filmmaker Sujewa Ekanayake who is very active on Twitter talking about indie filmmaking. Set for release next spring and originally made during the 2020 pandemic summer, The Secret Society For Slow Romance is an indie dating-in-nyc story that's not really about romance, but it sort of is. Two extraordinary people go on several dates in New York City and plan a project that may change the world for the better - when they discover a way to end poverty worldwide. Described as "a comedy inspired by My Dinner with Andre, Before Sunrise, and Werewolf Ninja Philosopher." The film stars Alia Lorae and Sujewa Ekanayake as the couple. With music by Kevin MacLeod. This looks like a homemade adventure through NYC with plenty of fun conversations.

Rick and Morty Season 5 Episode 1
The season premieres of Rick and Morty’s second and third seasons were unique in that they followed cliffhanger finales, so—even if the second season’s didn’t turn out all that great—those premieres felt like epic reintroductions to the show’s world that had to get the characters out of a previously-established sci-fi pickle (not a literal one this time) in a way that was satisfying and cool. The series stopped doing season cliffhangers after that, so the season four premiere was just more Rick and Morty and the season five premiere is much the same. In fact, “Mort Dinner Rick Andre” even echoes “Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Repeat” with a plot to do with time, Morty’s forever-crush Jessica, and the idea that—no matter the permutation of sci-fi circumstances—Morty is doomed to forever be,...

Before he was The Rock, he was just Dwayne Johnson… or, as the wrestler-turned-movie star’s autobiographical NBC sitcom Young Rock tells us, just “Dewey.”
Young Rock hops across decades to tell The Rock’s colorful life story, and Tuesday’s series premiere kicks off in the year 2032, with Johnson (playing himself) on the campaign trail running for president (!). In an interview with Randall Park — who’s ditched acting for journalism, it seems — The Rock hits back at claims he’s a Hollywood elitist, insisting that he’s had to work hard for everything he’s ever gotten in life.

Turns out it wasn’t the last dance, after all.
Hot on the heels of the ratings bonanza that was The Last Dance on ESPN, ABC will broadcast the 10-part sports documentary chronicling the life and career of NBA Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and his championship Chicago Bulls’ teams of the 1990s.
ABC will begin the broadcasts on Saturday, May 23 with episodes 1 and 2.
The final two episodes of The Last Dance drew 5.89 million and 5.4 million viewers, respectively, on ESPN last Sunday. The original runs of all 10 episodes averaged 5.6 million same-day viewers, cementing The Last Dance as the most-watched documentary content ever on ESPN.
The series features never-before-seen footage from the 1997-1998 season as the Bulls pursued their sixth NBA championship in eight years. Directed by Jason Hehir — The Fab Five, The ’85 Bears, Andre the Giant — it was available on Netflix outside the U.S.

On “Drake Song,” as the title suggests, Davidson offers his own pastiche of a Drake song, even employing the dance from the Toronto rapper’s quarantine-made hit “Toosie Slide.” “This is a Drake song, I miss my ex, this is a Drake song,” Davidson sings on the chorus. “Number One on the Billboard.”
Davidson later raps, “I’d be with you, but this is an obstacle / It’s just not physically possible.

On this episode of Empire, titled "Cupid Painted Blind," Cookie and Lucious worry that Andre will be Diana's next victim, Hakeem gets some fatherly advice from Shyne and Jamal deals with the aftermath of Warren's betrayal.
Actions have consequences, and Jamal is facing some serious legal woes after very publically beating the crap out of Warren. There's a warrant out for his arrest, but Thirsty has convinced the powers that be to let Jamal turn himself in. This gives the Lyon family 10 hours to find a way out of this mess. Thirsty thinks if they can convince Warren to say he threw the first punch, Jamal could be cleared of some, if not all, of the charges he's facing. The main obstacle standing in their way is finding Warren since Diana DuBois has her nephew hidden away and under lock and key.

Jesse Shapiro's debut feature concerns two young friends spending a day aimlessly wandering the streets of Los Angeles. A veritable love letter to the city in which it's set, Nobody Walks in La feels like a more mobile and less intellectual variation on My Dinner With Andre. But despite its decidedly modest nature, the film — as aimless as the pair's wanderings — has its charms, thanks in large part to the appealing performances by its two leads.

As a gay, forty-something white man and father of 4-year-old twins, I have no business judging the rap battle that took place on this week’s episode of Empire (though for the record, I’d probably call it a draw). That said, I do know a full plate of crazy when it drives up to the curb in a black SUV, sporting a chauffeur’s cap and a $10 blonde wig from Party City.

"True Detective" Season 2 just got hate-watched into the ground. The 1.5-hour finale aired last night, and Twitter was ready with knives. Maybe expectations were too high after Season 1, but from the first episode, fans were confused, disappointed, confused, depressed, still confused, and bored. When the series ended, there was still mass confusion and disappointment.
To be fair, there are some TD2 defenders out there -- fans who claim to have liked the plot, characters, tone and finale resolution, with some arguing that the haters were just too dumb to follow along or forgot that Season 1 was also pretentious and incomprehensible. But some of defenders just seem to want to pride themselves on swimming against the stream, while some of the critics just seem to want to pride themselves on coming up with clever insults.
Either way, the result was an onslaught of (sometimes hilarious) opinions during the finale's airing. #TrueDetectiveSeason...

A new video posted by IGN has apparently revealed the (almost) full roster for WWE 2K16.
It is common knowledge now that the new game will have a bumper roster of 120 unique characters, but the list below falls a few short of that while Hulk Hogan is still a part of it. The Hulkster has been removed from the game altogether for reasons that you don’t need me to tell you about.
There are a number of shocking inclusions, including Superstars down the pecking order in Nxt and Attitude Era stars who had very little to do with cover star Stone Cold Steve Austin. While there are also a number of notable exclusions, including the Legion of Doom, who seemed to be nailed on for a place in the new title after leaked video footage appeared to show Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler and Jim Ross recording commentary...

As you can tell from above, Prisoner 24601 still has the physical prowess to make us swoon (much like Hugh Jackman’s Oscar-nominated turn as Jean Valjean in the 2012 film), but Iranian/Canadian star Ramin Karimloo’s long-awaited Broadway debut as Valjean proved to be worth the wait. Coming off stellar reviews (and proving a threat to claim the Best Actor in a Musical Tony), with the revival already a smash hit, it seems that everything old is new again, as audiences cannot get enough barricades and French resistance (this time sans turntable, and all the better for it). Tyne Daly...

Complex and avant-garde French film director best known for Night and Fog and Last Year in Marienbad
Alain Resnais, who has died aged 91, was a director of elegance and distinction who, despite generally working from the screenplays of other writers, established an auteurist reputation. His films were singular, instantly recognisable by their style as well as through recurring themes and preoccupations. Primary concerns were war, sexual relationships and the more abstract notions of memory and time. His characters were invariably adult (children were excluded as having no detailed past) middle-class professionals. His style was complex, notably in the editing and often – though not always – dominated by tracking shots and multilayered sound.
He surrounded himself with actors, musicians and writers of enormous talent and the result was a somewhat elitist body of work with little concern for realism or the socially or intellectually deprived. Even overtly political works, Night and Fog,...

Far too often we throw around the phrase "horror icon" or "horror legend"; however, there is no disputing the fact that Vincent Price absolutely deserves to be described with both of those handles. And today, to celebrate Scream Factory's launch of The Vincent Price Collection (review), we count down our Top 10 Vincent Price Films.
Well known to mainstream, non-horror fans as the voice in the legendary Michael Jackson song "Thriller," Vincent Price was indeed the face of horror for quite some time. He was incredibly chilling with a voice that simply oozed horror. And it's for those enviable traits, and the fact that he spent so much of his life dedicated to the horror genre, that we honor Vincent Price with his own personal Top 10 list!
He has just under 200 acting credits to his name, then over 175 more instances where he appeared as himself. Price's credits read like a...

Who is the latest familiar face flocking to the Veronica Mars film project? We have a little lady to report on this time. Its actress Tina Majorino. Talk about familiar. Majorino is very recognizable, and not just because of her stint on the youthful crime series. But we sure are happy to announce the return of her character Cindy “Mac” Mackenzie none the less.
One by one the actors you remember from the set of Veronica Mars are saying yes upcoming, Kickstarter-funded Veronica Mars movie. Creator Rob Thomas must be a man on top of the world right about now. When I was growing up, New York 's best (now long-defunct) classical radio station, Wncn, played only American composers' music each Fourth of July. With the classical world dominated by Europeans, this was a welcome and educational corrective. In the history of American music, independence wasn't achieved until the 20th century; 19th century composers such as John Knowles Paine and George Whitefield Chadwick studied in Europe and blatantly imitated European models. Listening to their music "blind," few would guess they were Americans. There was Revolutionary War-era vocal writer William Billings, but his originality was more a lack of proper technique. Continuing Wncn's tradition, here's a look at true American classical. music.
There is a bit of chauvinism in this article, as "American" here refers not to all the Americas (North, Central, and South) but rather the colloquial usage in the United States to mean that country's residents (hence, the Mexican Carlos Chavez,...

What's Jack Nicholson's secret? Maybe it's the eyebrows, hovering like ironic quotation marks over every line reading. Maybe it's the hooded eyes, which hold the threat of danger or the promise of joviality -- you're never sure which. Same with that sharklike grin. Or maybe it's the voice, which has evolved over the years from a thin sneer to a deep rumble, but is always precisely calibrated to provoke a reaction. Put them all together, and they say: "I am a man to be reckoned with. Ignore me at your peril." Nicholson, who turns 75 on April 22, is often criticized for relying on his bag of tricks, for just showing up and doing Jack Nicholson (though indeed, he often seems to have been hired precisely for that purpose). But he's also capable of burrowing deep into a character, finding his wounded heart, and revealing the ugly truth without fear or vanity.

"Napoleon Dynamite" was a key transitional point in Tina Majorino's career, ending a hiatus between her time as as the child star of "Andre" and "Waterworld" and her later, young adult work on "Veronica Mars," "Big Love" and "Bones." Majorino is returning to the world of "Napoleon Dynamite" this spring in Fox animated form, as viewers are reintroduced to her liger-loving Deb. Check out my interview -- conducted in September, along with most of these pesky Fox video interviews -- with Majorino, which touched on the cast's then-recent visit to San Diego's Comic-Con, the influence of comedy veteran Mike...

The 2011 PollyGrind Film Festival recently wrapped up in Las Vegas, and the madman behind the scenes, Chad Clinton Freeman, checked in with Dread Central to share with us exclusively the winners of this year's fest.

This year's big winners (and flicks that will no doubt go on to find audiences soon) include the highly controversial The Bunny Game, The Super, Dear God No!, The Gruesome Death of Tommy Pistol and Ratline.

Watching Melissa McCarthy try to keep her composure announcing the 2011 Emmy Awards nominations after learning that she herself had also received a nod (for CBS' 'Mike & Molly') was a delightful way to spend the morning, wasn't it?
But after the contenders were named and co-announcer Joshua Jackson (Fox's 'Fringe') walked away empty-handed, we were finally able to take in what had just happened.
The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (i.e. the Emmy nominating committee) likes the familiar, so we weren't expecting too many shockers -- but we were wrong.
Critically acclaimed shows like 'Terriers' walked away completely empty handed, while 'The Cape' (the frikkin' Cape) got one. There were some pleasant surprises, though. 'Men of a Certain' age star Andre Brauhger was recognized (though unfortunately not his costar, Ray Romano), and so was 'Friday Night Lights.' Finally.

As if there was ever any doubt that Kathryn Bigelow's follow-up to the Oscar-winning The Hurt Locker would find a juicy United States distribution deal, Columbia has stepped into the breach, picking up a movie that will likely make them a veritable ballsload of money.
The film focuses on the black ops group tasked with hunting down and killing Osama Bin Laden, and all of a sudden became one of Hollywood's hottest in-development films late last month when Navy Seal Team 6 actually succeeded in killing the 54-year-old diabetic in real life. The as-yet untitled flick is currently set for a fourth quarter 2012 release, presumably to better facilitate the gads of Academy Award nominations this thing is going to receive.
No, "Navy Seal Team 6" isn't an Andre sequel. Sorry, Tina Majorino.
Bigelow's next film will be getting much of the band back together from The Hurt Locker, including writer/producer Mark Boal,...

Well, if the Competition titles at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival don't generate any early year Oscar buzz, I think it's safe to say the Out of Competition titles will. Several films that have already been seen and positively reviewed can be found in the fest's Spotlight Line-Up along with a batch of anticipated hopefuls in the Premiere Section.
Beginning with the festival's premieres, Miguel Arteta (Youth in Revolt) is bringing Cedar Rapids to Park City where it will debut before it hits theaters only a couple weeks later on February 11. Jacob Aaron Estes's The Details, which was shot only a few miles from my house in the Queen Anne district of Seattle, arrives with Elizabeth Banks, Laura Linney and Tobey Maguire in tow.

Yesterday we revealed the in-competition line-up for this years Sundance Film Festival. Today the programmers have announced the second wave, the out-of-competition line-up. It includes six categories and you can check them all out below. We already knew Kevin Smith‘s Red State would be screening, as he announced on his podcast last night. The rest of this out-of-competition line-up is pretty unbelievable.
We get Cedar Rapids (from Youth In Revolt‘s Miguel Arteta), Mark Pellington‘s I Melt With You, My Idiot Brother starring Paul Rudd, Tom McCarthy‘s Win Win, as well as Dito Montiel‘s third feature The Son of No One. We also have new documentaries by Morgan Spurlock and Eugene Jarecki. Some of my favorite Tiff films are also making an appearance, including Submarine (pictured above) and Meek’s Cutoff.
