If watching a movie can be compared to taking your emotions for a walk, then sad films challenge audiences with a full-on sprint. Since before Rose said goodbye to Jack or even Bambi lost his mother, tragedy has played a vital role in cinema’s most well-loved stories of every ilk.
For romance, the possibility of heartbreak raises the stakes, pitting lover against lover or, worse still, lovers against time in dazzling depictions of humanity’s enduring quest for security and acceptance. “Titanic,” “A Star is Born,” “Moonlight,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Up,” and countless other legendary titles have crafted couples so heart-rendingly believable that their joyous reunions and painful partings have provided powerful parallels to our own.
Epic tales of war and survival position total devastation similarly, dangling all-consuming grief and loss like narratively juicy carrots motivating the plodding agony of movies from “War Horse” to “Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.

Who doesn’t love a heart-warming pet story? Rob Lowe stars as the dad in the father-son story of their search for their lost dog, Gonker. The trailer for the Netflix film finds its way online and features a journey through the wilderness as they encounter various colorful characters like tough bikers, news reporters interested in their story, and new-age hippies. Usually, films like these showcase the viewpoint from the dog’s perspective as the canine usually encounters a number of obstacles through their adventure in unknown territory, much like 90s family films, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, and Milo & Otis.
The plot synopsis from Netflix reads,
“After a young man and his beloved dog are separated on the Appalachian Trail, he and his father must begin a desperate search to find him before it’s too late. Based on an incredible true story of humanity and everyday heroism.Based...

When people think about Academy Award-nominated directors, George Miller is probably not one of the first names that come to mind. Academy Award-nominated films have a certain connotation – typically we think of movies that are serious, but maybe a bit stodgy, ambitious, but classically-minded, crowd-pleasing, but rote. In the general public’s mind, Academy Award-nominated films are usually well-made, stuffy dramas that are more akin to eating your vegetables than pigging out on something decadent and different. But Miller makes odd, energetic genre films, something the Academy historically has ignored — unless this particular director is involved.
Miller, whose new film Three Thousand Years of Longing is out today, may be our weirdest highly decorated filmmaker still stretching his gifts. His last film, 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, the fourth entry in his post-apocalyptic action series that saw a 30-year gap between installments, was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

In 1998, A-list actor Michael J. Fox publicly disclosed that he had been diagnosed seven years earlier with Parkinson’s disease, which impairs the body’s nervous and motor systems. At the time, the most notable people living with Parkinson’s were boxer Muhammad Ali and U.S. attorney general Janet Reno, but it has since impacted other figures such as Alan Alda, Neil Diamond, and Linda Ronstadt. More than 150 years after the disease was given a name, there remains no known cause for it, but Fox has devoted the last two decades of his life to answering that question and advancing treatment for people like him. In acknowledgment of these efforts, the recently retired performer has been announced as the next recipient of the film academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Oscar-winning animators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller slammed the Academy for diminishing the animation categories during the 94th Academy Awards.
The directing duo behind “The Lego Movie” and co-producers of “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” penned an opinion piece for Variety calling out the Oscars’ handling of the animated categories, especially when “Encanto” won Best Animated Feature. Presenters Lily James, Halle Bailey, and Naomi Scott (who’ve all played Disney princesses) took to the stage, saying, “So many kids watch these movies over and over… and over and over and over and over… I think some parents out there know exactly what we’re talking about.”
That glib presentation of one of the night’s biggest honors didn’t sit well with two leaders of the animation community.

The movie resonated with audiences — so much that it became a Broadway musical that ran from 1994 to 2007 and became one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history. Well here we are. April is going to be a fairly sedentary and isolating month for a lot of people. At least we now thankfully have some guidance as to our entertainment options as HBO has released its new streaming releases for April 2020.
HBO’s original series premieres are pretty busy this month. The fourth season of Issa Rae’s excellent comedy Insecure arrives on April 12. That’s preceded by the fascinating docuseries Atlanta’s Missing and Murdered: The Lost Children and followed by book adaptation I Know This Much is True.
On the film side of things there are a few exciting options. Good Boys arrives on April 4, It: Chapter Two on April 11, and Stuber on April 18. Some older movies arriving on April 1 are Team America: World Police, Die Hard, and Slumdog Millionaire.
Here is everything else coming to HBO Now and HBO Go in April 2020 via HBO PR.

“Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey” is letting out a huge howl right about now. “A Dog’s Way Home,” the latest in the canine-loving cinematic universe (from the screenwriters of 2017’s scandal-plagued “A Dog’s Purpose”) employs all the same tactics as the 1993 hit family film: the adorable-sounding narrator, a pet’s love for their human so deep that they journey through perilous environments in hopes of being reunited, and the intermingling stories of those they come across while trying to get back home. But “Homeward Bound” made it enjoyable.

It’s hard to know who is more mistreated in “A Dog’s Way Home,” the city of Denver, Colorado, or the audience who has to sit through it. On the one hand, Denver’s city-wide pit bull ban probably deserves some scrutiny. On the other hand, the knowledge that this inane and humorless movie is only tone third of Bruce Cameron’s growing dog-iverse cuts more deeply than any dog bite. Denver isn’t the only city that should consider a city-wide ban.
Not technically a sequel to last year’s “A Dog’s Purpose,” this movie follows a different anthropomorphized dog, and this time, she stays in one body. That’s right — the first movie followed a single dog soul throughout many rebirths, a premise that allowed for a variety of pup cuteness, but also necessitated more than a few dog deaths throughout its painful 100 minutes.

A top executive at the blockchain specialist SingularDTV said the company is “very optimistic” it will gain regulatory approval to enable crowdfunding through its platform.
Letting members of the company’s online community directly invest in film, TV and music projects would close a key loop, said Kim Jackson, co-founder and head of entertainment for the company. During a keynote session at a New York conference sponsored by the Media & Entertainment Services Alliance, she said crowdfunding would complement tools for producing, distributing and tracking projects. The whole enterprise, she said, can be managed with new technology that offers far greater ease and transparency than with any current method, though regulators have expressed some wariness.

William Phipps, the voice of Prince Charming in the animated Disney film Cinderella and a prolific actor who appeared in more than 200 film and television productions, has died. Phipps passed Friday at UCLA Medical Center in Santa Monica at age 96 from lung cancer complications, according to his friend, author Tom Weaver.
Phipps had an interesting career in film, debuting in the Oscar-nominated Crossfire, which was a Best Picture candidate that year. But he was best known for his many roles in 1950s science fiction films, where he was one of the genre’s main players.
Among his appearances were the films Five, The War of the Worlds, Invaders From Mars, Cat Women of the Moon, and The Snow Creature.

Yesterday, we reported on a rumor from Screen Junkies. Said rumor stated that Robert Zemeckis, who directed such big classics as Back to the Future and Forrest Gump, was in early talks to enter the DC Extended Universe and helm the trouble Flash movie. When last we heard, following the departure of Dope director Rick Famuyiwa, Warner Bros was still in search for a director for that superhero standalone film. Zemeckis taking over would have fallen in line with the studio’s strategy of taking big A-list directors and throwing them at a superhero movie.
The report was tentative at best, and the panelists delivering the news made sure to state that there was very much the possibility that Zemeckis could drop out of the project, and it sounds like that’s exactly what happened.
According to Variety, Universal and Amblin have dated Zemeckis’ next movie for November 21, 2018. The film will star Steve Carrell,...

Finding Nemo encompasses a tremendous amount of positive imagery that makes up Disney and Pixar’s populous appeal. From learning how to trust family and friends, to overcoming biggest fears and obstacles, Finding Nemo understands how to tap into the audience’s heartstrings and neatly ties in a meaningful message for the viewer to take home. Yet with every good side, there is a dark presence that even Disney can’t back away from. Like many Disney films, from Bambi to Frozen, Finding Nemo deals with a story whose basis stems from a broken household struggling with a great deal of separation. Why does Disney cling onto threads of such despair and heartache? Perhaps it’s a factor many can relate to. Or perhaps it’s a working formula that sweetens the arc of a happy ending. Either way, separation is a tapped fountain of which Hollywood has dipped into time after time again.

Walt Disney Pictures
Sometimes, I feel as if Walt Disney and his famous studios had as much of a hand in raising me as my parents did. I’m sure many of you feel the same way. After all, Walt Disney and the production company has produced more movies for children than all the other major studios all put together. It’s likely that the first movie that most of us saw was a Disney flick. Most of us have memories of our first viewings of at least one Disney film (for me, my strongest is my first experience in a movie theater, going to see The Lion King when I was four years old).
When we reminisce about our favorite Disney flicks, it’s usually the acknowledged classics that dominate our discussions. Said classics include such films as Cinderella, Aladdin, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, Lady And The Tramp, and Beauty And The Beast,...

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey was a perfect family movie. It was funny. It was inspirational. It had talking pets! So when my parents let me watch it when I was 5, it seemed like a socially acceptable parenting decision. And it was. To this day, I love that movie. It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I’ll probably show it to my kids one day. However, that doesn’t mean I watch it all the time, mainly because I can’t so much as think about the scene where Shadow falls into that hole without crying. Let me...

When a movie makes over $1 billion at the box office, it's not too often that a sequel doesn't immediately follow. However, in the case of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, the movie was based on a classic work of literature where no official continuation exists. It's true that Lewis Carroll wrote two books featuring Alice, however, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass were both used as source material for the movie. Nevertheless, Disney is now forging ahead with a potential sequel, bringing back screenwriter Linda Woolverton to attempt to pen a script. In addition to writing the first Alice in Wonderland film, Woolverton has done plenty of other work for Disney over the past two decades. She also wrote Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and the upcoming Sleeping Beauty prequel Maleficent. There is no word yet on whether or not...

Linda Woolverton who has worked on 2010s 3D fantasy box office hit Alice in Wonderland and has a long history with Disney is reportedly penning the sequel.
Mouse House stalwart Woolverton has written the story of movies such as Mulan, released in 1998, and 1994 The Lion King, not to mention Beauty and the Beast and Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. She is also currently working on the upcoming movie Maleficent, scheduled to be released in 2013.
Tim Burton’s big screen live action take on Alice starred Mia Wasikowska in the title role and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.
This will marks Woolverton’s third Alice screenplay as she also wrote the script for the musical stage version currently in the works by Disney Theatrical Productions, which Rob Ashford will helm as a direct adaptation of the 2010 feature.

Tim Burton’s wily, psychedelic Alice In Wonderland is getting a sequel, and the original film’s screenwriter is penning it for Disney.
EW confirms that the Disney-attached script is being written by Linda Woolverton, who also wrote the screenplay for 2010′s 3-D fantasy box office hit starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska as Alice, and wild-eyed Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen. Other return figures are Joe Roth, Suzanne Todd and Jennifer Todd as producers.

Tim Burton's live-action adaptation of Alice in Wonderland was a huge hit, making over a billion dollars. It also helped inspire a ton of other live-action fairytale movies. So it's no surprise that Disney is finally moving forward with a sequel.
The studio has hired Linda Woolverton to write the script for the sequel. Woolverton has a solid history with Disney writing other films such as Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, and Maleficent. So she definitely knows what it takes to make a solidly good Disney film.
Of course there's no details of what the plot of the sequel will be, but it's obviously inspired by Lewis Carroll's Wonderland novels, and we know Alice will return to Wonderland. We just don't know what adventure awaits her this time around.
There's no word on if Burton will be back to direct or...

So why is Disney prepping a sequel to a movie that even Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief technical officer Andy Hendrickson said "isn't very good"? Well, they've got about $1,024,299,904 reasons. That's how much "Alice In Wonderland" took worldwide in 2010 to make it one of the highest grossing films of all time (it's still #12 on the all time grossing worldwide list ahead of "The Dark Knight"). So this was really a matter of procedure because let's face it, you don't leave a cash cow like that lying around, so yes, a sequel is on the way. The studio has tasked veteran writer Linda Woolverton -- the scribe behind "Beauty and the Beast," "The Lion King," "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey" and "Maleficent" -- to write the follow-up. Of course, there are no details except that it will follow "Alice fleeing real-world pressures by returning to...

You're getting too old for this: 25 years ago, on March 6, 1987, "Lethal Weapon" was released. The buddy-cop thriller not only cemented Mel Gibson's status as a household name after playing good-natured loose-canon (as opposed to now) Martin Riggs, but also created a social phenomenon still relevant to this day: "I'm getting too old for this shit."
The catchphrase, said numerous times throughout the "Lethal Weapon" series by Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), has appeared in many movies over the last 25 years, often times in reference to the put-upon police detective himself. (The recent trailer for "Men In Black 3" features Will Smith uttering a PG variation on Murtaugh's famous one-liner.)
What you might not know? That "Lethal Weapon" wasn't the first film to utilize some form of the defeated turn-of-phrase. From "North by Northwest" and "The Sting" to Murtaugh himself, enjoy a mash-up of movie characters getting too old for this.

Here at Tmp, we’re a bunch of movie nerds...Seems like a no-brainer, but as such, we tend to have unique items on our Christmas lists. So if you’ve got a movie buff that you need to shop for this Christmas, maybe our own individual wishlists will aid you in finding that perfect gift.

The reason it took so long for me to write something down on my wish list is not lack of wanting something, but it is because I want everything. However, since we are not writing a novel, I did manage to narrow it down to two things:
I love Anthony Hopkins! He is one of my favorite, if not the favorite, older Hollywood actors. The man is undoubtedly a living legend in the film world. What Hopkins fan would not want an autographed photo from Silence of the Lambs? As a bonus, this...

Animals: They're a good source of protein. The cowboy's slaves. Furry, stupid people. By whatever name you choose to call them, there's no doubting that animals are both funny and delicious.
But what have they ever accomplished on their own? Nothing! If it weren't for us humans dressing them up in funny hats and putting them on greeting cards, there wouldn't be a single gainfully employed animal.
Fortunately, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" might be the wake-up call our cuddly companions need to start cleaning their own litter boxes, if not take over the world. But if ape-ageddon isn't the right route for your pet, here are some other examples of impressive animals that might light a fire under their furry butts.
9. Scooby-Doo in 'Scooby-Doo' (2002)
Accomplishment: Sort of talking and sort of standing
What's most impressive about this canine sleuth aren't his questionable powers of deduction, so much...

Cliché: a phrase, expression, or idea that has been overused to the point of losing its intended force or novelty, especially when at some time it was considered distinctively forceful or novel.
With Hollywood producing so many movies ever year, it is no surprise that they are often full of clichés. Jeff Smith created this montage under the Bottoms Up Productions label for acclaimed movie blog FilmDrunk.com, showing clips of some of the biggest movie clichés from a total of 102 films. The list of films are below the video. Enjoy!

U.S. And Canada/Opening Wide Jonah Hex: Josh Brolin is a disfigured half-zombie gunfighter in the weird Old West. And it’s kinda not a comedy. [trailer] review to come If you can’t make it to the multiplex, try: • The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr.: The Complete Series (1993): The sadly short-lived Fox TV series is the ultimate in Western science-fantasy comedy. Plus it stars Bruce Campbell, which is never bad. • Young Guns (1988): As overblown as a Bon Jovi music video, and dumb as a bag of rocks. And it’s still kinda better than Jonah Hex. • American Outlaws (2001): It’s the Western as cheesy beefcake, which also makes it more entertaining than Hex. • No Country for Old Men (2007): For more Josh Brolin in the new West, though here his character is of a considerably dumber bent. Toy Story 3: Woody and Buzz and the gang are back.

Hollywood has struck gold. Comic book superheroes have brought a cash bonaza in recent years, and as the number of untapped properties runs out there’s a rush to snap up other types of graphic novel too.
Here are the top 10 best graphic novels / comic book projects currently in production:
Preacher
This has appeared on many an “In Production” list since the comic began back in 1995. Numerous directors have sought to bring the adventures of Jesse Custer (the titular Preacher) to the screen, including Kevin Smith and Daredevil helmer Mark Steven Johnson.
The main story follows Custer’s attempts to locate God, after he becomes possessed by the errant child of an Angel and a Demon. Other characters include the Saint of Killers – a Clint Eastwood style gunman hired by Angels to kill Custer, Cassidy – an Irish vampire, and Arseface – a boy who, when attempting to emulate Kurt Cobain’s suicide,...

I grew up reading Charlotte's Web and watching Mister Ed and the Francis (the Talking Mule, with Donald O'Connor) movies on TV, so I have a very warm spot in my heart for talking animals. They can inspire wondrous flights of fantasy, lift the spirits with good-natured humor, and lead to a deep and abiding respect for nature and the environment.
Of course, watching the Yogi Bear cartoons once made me think I could take on a black bear foraging for food at our family's camping site in Yellowstone National Park -- I was six years old and had to be physically restrained -- so I can see the down side as well. Still, dozens of animated films have made it abundantly clear that it's possible to lend human voices to the animal kingdom without dumbing the material down to idiocy and, when done right (Babe, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey,...

Edward Scissorhands scribe Caroline Thompson has been hired to adapt the high-profile project Lionboy for DreamWorks and studio-based producers Team Todd. Thompson, who will receive high-six against low-seven figures, will pen a screenplay based on the novel written by Louisa Young and her daughter Isabelle. It's set in London in the near future and centers on a boy named Charlie Ashanti who was scratched by a leopard when he was a baby and thus can communicate with cats. As a child, he teams up with a band of circus lions to track down his parents, who have been kidnapped. Lionboy, which has drawn comparisons to Harry Potter, is the first of three books in a series and is expected to launch a franchise for the studio. The latter two books have yet to be published and are still untitled. The tone and genre of the book are said to fit into Thompson's body of work, which includes such family adventure and fantasy films as The Addams Family, The Secret Garden, Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Team Todd sisters Suzanne and Jennifer Todd will produce Lionboy. At the studio, production executive Claire Rudnick-Polstein is overseeing. Thompson is repped by ICM and attorney Walter Teller.
