- Young Parisian civil servant, Sébastien Sébastian is dispatched by his minister as mediator in a case between the mayor and the citizens of a small village in the south of France. The problem concerns the choice of the route of the TGV which must pass in the commune. The mayor, Gilles La Chesnaye, is in favor of a route that would cross his property. His wife, Maud, is the real owner of the castle. She rallied the population against her husband's plan. During a public meeting, Sébastian must face the anger of the lord. She and Gilles have been married for ten years, but the union has never been consummated. Maud would like to get a divorce, but, for lack of tangible proof, she risks losing everything in the procedure. She consoles herself with her gardener, Blotte, and tries to seduce Sébastian. For his part, Gilles finds a way to rally Sébastian to his project. A friend's daughter seduces the official. The couple is photographed in an awkward position and the blackmailers demand 30,000F. The landlady ends up discovering the compromising photos in her husband's safe. Furious, she in turn decides to blackmail her husband. She surprises him in an inn, during a somewhat special session. The photos taken will allow Maud to obtain a divorce. To defend her domain, Mrs. La Chesnaye creates an animal park and a support committee. One night, Gilles and Sébastian break into the property to retrieve the documents. La Chesnaye tries to set the castle on fire, but he is surprised by Blotte. He fled to the park before being devoured by a lion. Sébastian ends up in prison. As for the chatelaine, she can have happy days with Blotte.
