Nicole Kidman has captivated audiences with her spellbinding acting for over 40 years and has excelled in theatre, film, and television. Not only is she an accomplished producer but a five-time Academy Award nominee. Her role as Virginia Woolf in The Hours (2002) earned her the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1967, she began her career in Australia as a teenager with roles in Bush Christmas (1983) and BMX Bandits (1983). Her performance in Dead Calm (1989) would grab the attention of Hollywood, and Tom Cruise, casting her in her breakout role as neurologist Dr. Claire Lewicki, in Days of Thunder (1990).
Her trajectory to establishing herself among Hollywood’s A-List continued as she starred alongside Cruise again in Far and Away (1992), mastered her comedic acting chops as an aspiring television personality in Gus Van Sant’s black comedy, To Die For (1995), and portrayed another doctor in the superhero film Batman Forever (1995), opposite Val Kilmer.

The character of Chief Miles O'Brien (Colm Meaney) first appeared as a background player in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" pilot "Encounter at Farpoint" in 1987. Chief O'Brien was initially just an ancillary character who operated the transporters on the Enterprise-d, and who only passingly interacted with the show's main cast. As the series progressed, however, O'Brien's role became larger and larger, and he came to have his own backstories and relationship. O'Brien would eventually marry Keiko (Rosalind Chao) and have a daughter, and eventually reveal that he's suffering from some long-held war trauma. Ultimately, O'Brien appeared in 52 episodes of "Next Generation" before exiting in the show's sixth season.
The reason O'Brien left was because he had accepted a promotion. He was to become the chief engineer on a rundown Cardassian space station now designated Deep Space Nine by the Federation. Meaney, then, had signed on to be one of...

The film gods are a fickle bunch. If the flip of the coin had landed on a different outcome at various points in Hollywood history, the entire landscape of cinema as we know it could be completely changed. In fact, movie star Tom Cruise is something of a cottage industry to himself when it comes to major roles that he could've signed on for, but ended up little more than fascinating notes of trivia -- in our universe, at least. There's the infamous "Iron Man" scenario that could've seen him suit up as Tony Stark instead of Robert Downey, Jr., of course, along with the near-miss of starring in the classic "Shawshank Redemption." But there's one other little-known factoid that completes this little trilogy of alternate-history Cruise projects: one where he could've been cast as the lead of "The Mask of Zorro," incredibly enough.

Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of the Flower Moon” opens with a flurry of images and incidents that quickly establish the world and era of the film. Moving from an Osage pipe ceremony to a slow-motion shot of characters dancing in gushing oil and then a newsreel recreation that acclimates the viewer to the historical context, Scorsese and co-screenwriter Eric Roth create one of the most immediately involving openings in recent movies. Yet according to Scorsese, a completely different prologue was initially planned.
“Eric and I originally had the idea that we should do the Oklahoma land rush,” Scorsese told IndieWire. “He had written a five- or seven-page description with beautiful vignettes, and I was going to shoot it all in one take. We had it all worked out that it would take another month with a separate unit.” Shooting the sprawling action sequence would have allowed Scorsese to pay tribute...

Along with Keishi Otomo and Takashi Miike, Shinsuke Sato completed the trio of Japanese directors who truly excel in action anime/manga adaptations, with his works in “Gantz”, “Library Wars”, “I am a Hero” etc speaking for themselves. “Kingdom 2: Far and Away”, which continues the adaptation of the homonymous manga by Yasuhisa Hara, highlights the fact in the most eloquent fashion as it currently streams on Netflix, just before the third part's release later this year.

Tom Cruise swears his allegiance to three things: movie theaters, the Church of Scientology, and, for some reason, the British Royal Family. The “Top Gun: Maverick” star made a pre-recorded appearance at the King Charles’ Coronation Concert on Sunday, shouting out his beloved franchise in the process.

The next shot was of Tom Cruise piloting a fighter plane, saying: “Pilot to pilot, Your Majesty, you can be my wingman any time.”
It’s not the first time Cruise has been involved in a royal event.

The Irish accent is consistently voted one of the most attractive in the world, yet even some of the world’s finest actors have trouble with it. Leonardo DiCaprio tried, as did Julia Roberts (twice), and dare we even mention Brad Pitt?
Today (17 March) marks St Patrick’s Day, and if you have no pub and/or beer plans, why not experience the next best thing: reminiscing about the wonkiest Irish accents in film history.
Relatively new to this great lineage of bad accents is Wild Mountain Thyme, a romantic drama released in the UK in early 2021 and so inexplicable that even literal Irish actors seemed to speak with fake Irish accents in it.
Such is the evil power of this particular bit of fakery, though – Hollywood’s bastardised visions of Ireland so all-encompassing and destructive that few can survive it.

Nicole Kidman is one of the most iconic stars in Hollywood, ever since rising to fame in the early ’90s. During her early years, her star power was enhanced by movies like Dead Calm and Far and Away. But her relationship with fellow actor Tom Cruise earned her a lot of press as well. Cruise, who is known for his dedication to Scientology, encouraged Kidman to get involved with the church. And according to some sources, Kidman totally immersed herself in Scientology for several years. She even took special courses so that she could understand the religion better.

With the nominations for the 95th Academy Awards upon us, comeback kid Brendan Fraser is poised to win an Oscar for his heartbreaking, gut-wrenching performance in Darren Aronofsky's "The Whale" (read /Film's spot on review of the film here). If Fraser, famous for his swashbuckling days as Rick O'Connell in "The Mummy" franchise and off-the-wall comedies like "Airheads," wasn't ever considered a serious dramatic actor, he is now. Appearing as a guest on the "Saturday Night Live" deep dive podcast "Fly on the Wall" hosted by Dana Carvey and David Spade, Fraser opened up about his early days in the business when he was determined to be taken seriously as a performer.
Having just enjoyed some notoriety for his breakout role in "School Ties" (a film about a football star forced to confront anti-Semitism at a 1950s prep school), Fraser was trying to decide if playing a blockhead caveman...

Amblin Television, Imagine Documentaries and Nedland Media are in the very early stages of production on the documentary that is being directed by Laurent Bouzereau. Bouzereau is a documentarian whose credits include Five Came Back, Natalie Wood: What Remains Behind and Mama’s Boy: A Story From Our Americas. Pop quiz – what’s the most obscure Tom Cruise movie? If you’re thinking Lions for Lambs or maybe Far and Away, or even my beloved All the Right Moves, you’re wrong. Tom Cruise’s most obscure movie ever is, without a doubt, 1983’s Losin’ It. One of four films Cruise made in 1983, this had the misfortune of being released just a few months before Cruise’s career took off. It only made just over 1 million at the box office but would have easily made many more times that had it been held just a few more months, with Cruise becoming a household name by the end of that summer.
So why is Losin’ It so obscure? It’s a strange addition to Cruise’s filmography in that it’s a wacky sex comedy that has more in common with Porky’s than it does the classy Risky Business.

Sometimes, an on-screen couple is simply that – actors convincing their audience of burning passion through sheer talent.
On other occasions, the performance ends up sparking real-world romance that leads to wedding bells and the pitter-patter of small feet.
And then, there are some TV and film pairings that began in reality, long before they transferred to our screens.
ITV’s Stonehouse offers one of 2023’s first examples of an on-screen relationship being rooted in a real-life connection. Based on the true story of Labour MP John Stonehouse, who faked his own death in 1974, the drama stars Matthew Macfadyen in the title role, while Keeley Hawes plays his wife, Barbara.
The two actors have been married since 2004 and have two children together, as well as Hawes’ son from an earlier relationship.
Here are 10 more examples of real-life couples who have also played romantic partners.

Steven Spielberg famously got his start as a director via the trial by fire of guiding Joan Crawford through the pilot episode of Rod Serling's "Night Gallery." The screen diva put him through his paces but good, but the filmmaker hung in there, likening the experience to "pitching to Hank Aaron your first time in the game." The only performer who might've been more daunting for a tyro director during that era was Bette Davis. Ron Howard learned this when he was assigned to manage the two-time Oscar-winner in the 1980 made-for-television drama "Skyward."
Howard was not quite as wet behind the ears as Spielberg was when he took on Crawford. The "Happy Days" star had been in show business his entire life stretching back to "The Andy Griffith Show." He made his feature-directing debut with 1977's action-comedy "Grand Theft Auto," and called the shots on a TV movie called "Cotton Candy" a year later.

At the controls of Top Gun: Maverick … Tom Cruise came down to earth to receive an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Photo: Paramount Pictures
The biggest star at this year’s 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, Tom Cruise, who turns 60 in July, disappointingly didn’t arrive on the Croisette piloting a supersonic fighter jet.
Instead he was helicoptered sedately along the coast from Nice Airport for a day of full-on promotion including a sold-out master class in the Debussy Theatre followed by the red carpet première of Top Gun: Maverick whose release had been delayed for two years due to the pandemic. It is due to roll out worldwide from next week.

Someone got left on the cutting room floor of Tom Cruise’s career retrospective montage at the Cannes Film Festival.
She may have been married to the superstar for more than a decade and appeared in three of his films, but there was nary a shot of Nicole Kidman to be found in the comprehensive series of clips from Cruise’s long career.
Sure, “Days of Thunder,” the film that Kidman and Cruise met cute on, was represented, but no footage of the two of them in a torrid embrace was on display. Instead, it was only shots of Cruise behind the wheel of a very fast car.
Yes, there were clips from “Far and Away,” the sprawling historical epic in which Cruise and Kidman appeared as Irish immigrants seeking their fortune in 1890s America, with dodgy accents to boot. Here, though, Cruise was glimpsed riding a horse. No Kidman to be found.

When Tom Cruise landed his first starring role in 1981’s “Taps” opposite George C. Scott, he told the crowd at Cannes on Wednesday that he remembers thinking, “Please, if I could just do this for the rest of my life, I will never take it for granted.”
Over 40 years later, Cruise hasn’t stopped running, on screen or head-first into every public appearance to celebrate how much he loves the movies. Alongside the diminishing returns of “Fantastic Beasts” and the hype for the staggering Viking epic “The Northman,” this week’s news cycle brought news of potential cinephile goldmines, aka the Cannes Film Festival lineup. Already it looks like a vintage year, with new movies from David Cronenberg, Claire Denis, Cristian Mungiu, and Park Chan-wook.
Still, in terms of pure red-carpet optics, Cannes locked its ace-in-the-hole two years ago when it planned to screen “Top Gun: Maverick” out of competition at its canceled edition. At long last, Tom Cruise will walk the red carpet of the Lumiere Theatre for the first time since 1992, when he appeared for Ron Howard’s “Far and Away.” The Cannes launch (which follows a world premiere at CinemaCon) means even people for whom the pronunciation of “Cannes” is as mysterious as its program will catch a whiff of the media excitement around May 18.

Following almost two years of delays, fans of Tom Cruise and “Top Gun” are ready to take flight into the danger zone once again.
On Tuesday, Paramount released a new trailer for “Top Gun: Maverick,” which the studio has scheduled for a theatrical release on May 27.
Long in the works, Cruise originally announced the sequel to the 1986 blockbuster in 2017, with Joseph Kosinski (who worked with Cruise on “Oblivion”) stepping in as director following original filmmaker Tony Scott’s death. The first teaser for “Top Gun 2” arrived in December 2019, with a promise of a summer 2020 debut.
Then the coronavirus happened and forced the film’s delay, first to December 2020 and then again to July 2021. It was pushed again to November 2021, before Paramount ultimately moved the sequel again to its current position of Memorial Day weekend.

Following a staggering number of pandemic-related release date changes, Paramount Pictures’ “Top Gun: Maverick” is finally flying into theaters May 27. The sequel to the Reagan-era blockbuster (also starring Tom Cruise) will first stop over at the Cannes Film Festival for an out-of-competition premiere. This year’s festival runs May 17–28. Watch a brand new trailer for the film below.
This will be the first time in three decades that a Cruise movie has played at Cannes. His last appearance on the festival’s lineup was Ron Howard’s “Far and Away” in 1992.
Once again, the film finds Cruise in “Mission: Impossible” mode, helming all of his own jaw-dropping stunts. “For 34 years you guys have been very patient with me, and I felt it was my responsibility for me to deliver for you,” Cruise told audiences at Comic-Con when the first trailer bowed (several years ago). “Everything you see in this film is very real.

Rosselini. Buñuel. Kurosawa. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell?
Well, in addition to the masterpieces of world cinema, the Cannes Film Festival has a long history of launching and celebrating populist movies. To that end, it was announced Monday that this May’s soirée sur le Boulevard de la Croisette, the 74th Cannes Film Festival, will host Tom Cruise and “Top Gun: Maverick.”
The long delayed spectacle from Paramount and director Joseph Kosinski, with a screenplay from Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarry, started production back in May 2018, shot in IMAX at various flyboy locales like Pax River, Maryland, and China Lake, California. The coronavirus pandemic scrubbed the release date on several locations, but Cruise and company stood firm: this was to be exhibited theatrically, not dumped to streaming.

As the 2022 Cannes Film Festival approaches, rumors about the lineup have begun to run rampant. While the full selection of films will be released in April, Hollywood has begun speculating about whether high-profile films including Baz Luhrman’s “Elvis” and George Miller’s “Three Thousand Years of Longing” will debut at the iconic festival.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that “Top Gun: Maverick” will screen at the festival, likely playing out of competition. While the screening is unlikely to mark the film’s world premiere, it represents a major win for Cannes, adding some serious starpower to the 75th edition of the festival. This will be the first time in three decades that a Tom Cruise movie has played at Cannes. His last appearance on the festival’s lineup was Ron Howard’s “Far and Away” in 1992.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is set to screen at the Cannes Film Festival after a two-year delay because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The film will open domestically on May 27 after debuting internationally earlier that week. The official selections for the Cannes Film Festival, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary, will be released the third week of April. The festival runs from May 17 to May 28.
“Top Gun: Maverick” would mark the first time in 30 years that a film by Tom Cruise screened at the festival. The last Cruise film to premiere at Cannes was 1992’s “Far and Away.”
In addition to Cruise, the film stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro and Lewis Pullman. Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in “Oblivion,” takes over for Tony Scott.
Scott’s original action movie, which starred Cruise, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis, followed the exploits of a U.S. Navy flight academy and its students.
