Few types of movies sum up the 1990s quite like “dad thrillers.” A term popularized by the brilliant Max Read a few years ago, the dad thriller is a subgenre of thriller movies that was largely designed to appeal to older male viewers or otherwise featured thematic elements associated with that demographic. Yes, such movies often feature men being really good dads, but it’s about more than that. Dad thrillers were often closer to ’70s paranoia thrillers like Three Days of the Condor, which pitted crusaders of truth against staggering odds in a slow-burn narrative. They typically featured lawyers, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and dads in other thoroughly professional fields who were very good at their jobs. Many were based on books or otherwise inspired by the fictional and non-fictional texts dads of that generation loved to read. Some were theatrical hits but most of them found a home in living rooms everywhere.

Some Hollywood stars not only shine on-screen but also radiate kindness off-screen. Keanu Reeves and Bruce Willis exemplify this. The Matrix star, who is known as the nicest guy in Hollywood, is also celebrated for showering his Matrix crew with thoughtful gifts.

However, he might not be the only actor with such thoughtful gestures toward his crew. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently shared that the Die Hard star added money to the film crews’ cash giveaways to ensure that they had some extra cash by the weekends while working on the 1998 film Armageddon.

Hollywood stars Halle Berry and Bruce Willis have joined forces in various movies like Perfect Stranger and The Last Boy Scout. However, the actress has shared that she did not have a very pleasant experience working with the action star in their first film together, Tony Scott’s The Last Boy Scout.
The Last Boy Scout
The film follows Willis as a washed-up private investigator who teams up with a disgraced football star to uncover a potential conspiracy. Berry, who was still carving her path in the industry, portrayed the role of a stripper, Cory. And she later expressed feeling overlooked and unnoticed by her co-star.

Halle Berry has worked alongside many top actors in the film industry, including Bruce Willis. But when they first collaborated, Berry confided that the two barely interacted with each other.

Berry and Willis may be well acquainted now, but they weren’t exactly friends on their first official film together. The two starred in the 1991 Tony Scott feature The Last Boy Scout, where Berry played a stripper. It was one of the first features Berry did at the time during her ascension. Since Willis was already a huge star by the early 90s, she found their interaction to be a bit awkward.

Even as he collected his martini, the burly stranger who introduced himself as “Joe” exuded an aura of belligerence. We were standing on the fringe of a post-screening reception, so, hand extended, I blurted, “Did the movie work for you?”
“It was blah,” he replied. “Given what they spent for the script, they should have made a powerful f*ckin’ movie.”
At the time I didn‘t realize I was talking with Joe Eszterhas, who had made $4 million from sale of his script — more an auction than a sale and hardly “blah.” Joe and several estimable writing colleagues were participants in what came to be known in the mid-‘80s as the “Writers Rebellion,” a moment when top screenwriters decided to reinvent what they considered a broken system for propagating their creative product.

While Renny Harlin was promoting his film, The Bricklayer, JoBlo asked him about the making of Die Hard 2: Die Harder, and he had high praise for star Bruce Willis, who he compared, favourably, to the new generation of action stars, who seem reluctant to ever allow themselves to get beaten up on-screen, Willis never had this issue, said Harlin: “I really wanted Bruce Willis to get really screwed up. His face is a bloody mess by the end of the movie, and like you said, it really does make the character more heroic. They are really taking punishment and keep going.”
However, as we reported a little while back, there was one line Willis didn’t love in Die Hard 2: Just the fax, ma’am…
It’s a line that made audiences laugh, but, in his book “The Last Action Heroes,” writer Nick de Semlyan interviews Harlin, and...

Danielle Harris is an absolute legend in the horror space, having been a part of the genre for nearly 40 years. She always stuck out as a child actor in films such as Halloween 4 and The Last Boy Scout. But she continued that success into her adulthood with films like Hatchet and the Rob Zombie Halloween films. I was lucky enough to talk with Danielle about her latest horror film, Project Dorothy. She plays a rogue AI, so she’s just a voice here, but that’s also something she has plenty of experience with (she was Debbie on The Wild Thornberrys). While she’s a small part of the film, I was also able to talk with her about her podcast with Scout Taylor Compton and their planned trilogy of films. This was a great conversation; she gave some nice insight into the difficulties of acting in something you’re also directing.

Shane Black’s next film will be the hard boiled noir Play Dirty, with Lakeith Stanfield and Mark Wahlberg taking the lead roles.
It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything about Black’s next film, Play Dirty. Originally, the plan was to reunite Black with Robert Downey Jr. While it seems Downey Jr is still involved as a producer through Team Downey – the production company he founded with his wife Susan Downey – The Hollywood Reporter has the story that Mark Wahlberg will now play the central role, and we now learn too that Lakeith Stanfield is on board.
The plot follows “a hardened professional thief who is, naturally, double-crossed and left for dead. His hunt for revenge, however, brings with it a shot at the biggest heist of his career. But, per the studio, even with the help of his partner, an actor-slash-con artist named Grofield...

Luc Besson's "The Fifth Element" certainly has one of the most eclectic casts of any '90s blockbuster. On one hand, you have a variety of established actors. Then-beloved action hero Bruce Willis was the film's centerpiece, propped by British thespians like Gary Oldman and Ian Holm, both of whom had garnered recognition in major Hollywood blockbusters. On the other hand, you have a variety of unknown variables: Milla Jovovich, a young Russian model just getting her start on film; Chris Tucker, a hyperactive comedian slowly on the rise after "Friday," which also just so happened to feature "Fifth Element" co-star Tommy "Tiny" Lister Jr., an actor-turned-wrestler-turned-actor-again. Besson's call sheet of obscure talents goes on and on. However, it is exactly the director's ethno-galactically diverse, if often aesthetically disparate, vision for the film that makes the cast of "The Fifth Element" fit surprisingly well together.

Bruce Willis burst onto the American entertainment scene as the glib, smart-alecky detective David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd’s Maddie Haynes in ABC’s Moonlighting, a show that helped launch the dramedy genre. Willis was not long for the small screen, though, with his his sharp tongue and sarcastic wit destined for bigger things.
More than 90 films and $5.3 billion later, Willis has played a smart-aleck New York detective in the Die Hard series, a smart-aleck oil driller-turned-astronaut in Armageddon, a smart-aleck cop in The Last Boy Scout, a smart-aleck gangster in Last Man Standing, a smart-aleck soldier in Tears of the Sun … well, you get the picture.
When he wasn’t cracking wise, Willis played many other memorable roles in films that included The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), Billy Bathgate (1991), Color of Night (1994), 12 Monkeys (1995), The Fifth Element (1997), The Sixth Sense (1999) The Story of Us (1999), Looper (2012) and Motherless Brooklyn...

Yippee Ki-Yay, Schwarzenegger. Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined the massive outpouring of support for Bruce Willis, whose family revealed in February had frontotemporal dementia, which had progressed from a previous aphasia diagnosis.
Speaking with CinemaBlend, Arnold Schwarzenegger heaped major praise on Bruce Willis, particularly his star power. “I think that he’s fantastic. He was, always for years and years, is a huge, huge star. And I think that he will always be remembered as a great, great star. And a kind man. I understand that under his circumstances, health-wise, that he had to retire.” However, Arnold isn’t so sure that Willis—or any major movie star—can ever really ride into the sunset. “But in general, you know, we never really retire. Action heroes, they reload.”
That final part of Schwarzenegger’s quote could be read a couple of different ways. One that may fit Bruce Willis best is...

Tina Turner was, by all accounts, simply the best. Not just as a musician, where she released unforgettable hits like "Proud Mary" and "What's Love Got to Do With It?", but also as an actor. You probably remember her scene-stealing, villainous turn in the classic post-apocalyptic action thriller "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome," where she played a woman trying to reboot the world by bringing barbaric capitalism and grotesque industry back to the wastelands.
Auntie Entity was certainly Turner's most memorable role and even won her an NAACP Image Award for Best Actress, but the singing sensation did have an acting career beyond "Thunderdome." You can find her in musical classics like "Tommy" and musical not-so-classics like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," two films that emphasized her titanic celebrity as a musician. She was also the subject of the Oscar-nominated biopic "What's Love Got to Do With It," which...

The story of Basic Instinct begins with the writer, Joe Eszterhas. At the time, he was one of the most successful screenwriters in Hollywood, known for writing provocative films like Flashdance, Jagged Edge and Betrayed. Eszterhas had written three movies in a row where his male lead had emotionally manipulated the woman who loved him, so the writer wanted to flip the dynamic, to write a thriller where an evil woman controlled a man effortlessly through mind games and sex. He was fascinated and frightened by the notions of thrill killings and homicidal impulses, and delved into writing the thriller, a combination film noir and detective mystery. Three weeks later, he was done, a script he called “Love Hurts” until changing the title to Basic Instinct the day he sent it to his agent.
His agent was knocked out by it, and soon enough they were holding an auction for every major studio in Hollywood.

Note: Today marks Bruce Willis’s 68th birthday. We wanted to take a moment to wish the icon a very happy birthday and reflect on his career:
Here at JoBlo – we love Bruce Willis. When we heard back in March of 2022 that he would step back from acting due to his tragic Aphasia diagnosis, we were as shocked as everyone else, even if there were signs that things weren’t great with Willis going back a number of years. His last truly prominent role was M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass in 2019, while his last lead role was in Eli Roth’s Death Wish. Since then, it’s been chiefly VOD movies for Willis, where his roles were secondary at best. With his recent frontotemporal dementia diagnosis, we now know the truth.
Whatever the case, we here at JoBlo Originals wish to extend our very best to the man and his family at this difficult time.

Caught Out: Crime. Corruption. Cricket is a true-crime documentary directed by Supriya Sobti Gupta.
As they say in the first few sentences… they are villains, not heroes. And we are in India, the country of cricket, a sport that millions of people follow, and which is something like the Champions League for Europeans or the NFL for Americans.
And of course, behind all this sport, there is this dark world that this excellent documentary shows us.
About the Documentary
Behind a sport followed by children there is a whole dark world, plagued by cheating and which is full of violence, the world of betting that – as in The Last Boy Scout – affects professional sports and stains its reputation with dirt.
If you want to know more about the dark side of cricket in India, this is the perfect documentary, one which gives us an excellent insight into what goes on...

Early in 1987, producers Larry Gordon and Joel Silver were on the hunt for an action hero. They were working on a rollercoaster tale about terrorists hijacking a high-rise tower in Los Angeles and the script called for a muscle-bound bruiser.
For contractual reasons, Frank Sinatra was top of the list for Die Hard. Ol’ Blue Eyes had first refusal as he’d been the star of 1968’s The Detective, which like Die Hard was based on author Roderick Thorp’s thriller novels.
When the 70-year-old crooner confirmed his terrorist-fighting days were long behind him, producers went straight to the most obvious candidate: Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Terminator, Commando and Predator star said no, preferring to try his hand at comedy alongside Danny DeVito in Twins. The rejections kept coming: Richard Gere, Burt Reynolds, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Nick Nolte, Don Johnson and Mel Gibson all passed.
Way down the list was Bruce Willis.

A keystone film for understanding Quentin Tarantino is one he didn't direct: "True Romance," one of the first feature scripts he wrote. While he ceded directing duties to Tony Scott, his signature on the finished film is still legible.
The lead, Clarence Worley (Christian Slater), is Tarantino's avatar. A mid-20s pop culture fanatic who works at a comic book store and loves Elvis Pressley (and Kung-Fu movies), Clarence is the spitting image of who Tarantino was when he created the character. In some chuckle-worthy wish fulfillment, Clarence's pop culture knowledge also impresses girls, namely Alabama Whitman (Patricia Arquette). Another telling "True Romance" character is Drexl Spivey, "a white guy who thinks he's black."
"True Romance" feels more personal for Tarantino than "Reservoir Dogs" — it even jumps to Hollywood after the first act. It's easy to imagine a world where "True Romance" was his debut instead. If Tony Scott...

There was a time when Shane Black was the highest-paid screenwriter in Hollywood. His script for the 1991 film "The Last Boy Scout" famously fetched 1.75 million from the Geffen Company, with a 1 million guarantee. That price broke records and made Black an even hotter commodity than he already was. At that point, Black had already written the hit films "Lethal Weapon" and "The Monster Squad" while also doing uncredited punch-ups on "Predator," "Dead Heat," and "The Hunt for Red October." While riding high, Black's next film, John McTiernan's whimsical 1993 action fantasy "Last Action Hero" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, bombed harder than anyone might have imagined. On a rather huge budget of 85 million, the film ultimately only grossed 137 million worldwide.
Black returned with another record, having earned a whopping 4 million for his script to Renny Harlin's 1996 action film "The Long Kiss Goodnight." While a raucous and exciting action film, "Long Kiss" also bombed,...

There was an era of prime Bruce Willis where he was one of the most believable everyman tough guys in Hollywood. I mean, of course, he was in "Die Hard," the gold standard of movies about regular guys kicking ass. It makes sense that a man with his mix of likability and coolness spent his whole career running around and shooting stuff in action movies. He was such a commodity that he would be the whole reason certain movies got made.
But unlike some actors of comparable burliness, Willis wasn't just some handsome guy a Hollywood executive plucked from his blue-collar job. Willis was an actor since he was a child, when he first tried his hand at the craft during his time in the Cub Scouts, according to a 2013 GQ interview. That's right, before he starred in "The Last Boy Scout," Willis did a bit of scouting of his own.

Bruce Willis has sold the rights to allow a “digital twin” of himself to be created.
The 67-year-old actor sold his image rights to Deepfake, an artificial-intelligence-powered content optimisation platform which created a “digital twin” of Willis.
The image can be used in movies and all sorts of projects.
“With the advent of modern technology, I could communicate, work and participate in filming, even being on another continent,” Willis said of the project. “It’s a brand new and interesting experience for me, and I am grateful to our team.”
This news comes after Willis retired from acting after being diagnosed with the brain condition aphasia.
In a statement shared on Instagram, the Die Hard star’s family wrote that he had been “experiencing some health issues” which were “impacting his cognitive abilities”.

Update:
It turns out that Bruce Willis has indeed not sold his likeness for deep fake usage in future movies and TV shows, as originally reported by multiple outlets. The company Willis had reported ties to, Deepcake, has said that “the rights to Bruce Willis’s image [and] to his Digital Twin belong to Bruce Willis and to him only.” A rep for the actor further stated, “has no partnership or agreement with this Deepcake company.” In other words, it’s up to him how he wants to handle another Look Who’s Talking movie.

Tony Scott is one of the directors responsible for the modern blockbuster. In his time, critics widely dismissed him for combining rapid-fire editing with ultra-stylized visuals, which they said was the so-called “MTV aesthetic” (like that’s a bad thing). Ten years after his death, he’s considered one of the greatest action directors ever, with a widespread critical re-evaluation of his work in the wake of Top Gun: Maverick‘s success. Indeed, for those of us who loved him when he was alive, the fact that he’s great isn’t news, and in this episode of We Remember, we pay tribute to the man and his work.
Top Gun, True Romance, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire, The Last Boy Scout, the list goes on and on. Scott was a master at placing audience members inside his movies, permitting them to feel the heat of every moment. His passing...

Gene Lebell, who had an acting and stunt career that stretched from The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet to 24 and who the WWE called today “a towering figure in the world of martial arts,” has died. He was 89.
Lebell reportedly had more than 1,000 TV and movie credits, mostly as a stuntman, but also as a heavy, often a fight referee and sometimes a colorful background character. Dubbed “The Godfather of Grappling,” he faced off onscreen against Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Bruce Lee. He refereed Muhammad Ali’s infamous fight against Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki. Holding a 10th degree red belt in Judo and a 9th degree black belt in Ju-jitsu, helped train everyone from Lee to Norris to “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Ronda Rousey.
“Gene was the guy who taught Bruce Lee about grappling,” according to comedian, podcaster and UFC color commentator Joe Rogan.

The 1990s was a decade packed full of brilliant action movies but few, if any, reached the delirious heights of 1997’s Face/Off. Built around an absurd yet ingenious premise involving a cop switching faces with a comatosed master criminal in order to find and defuse a bomb, only for said bad guy to then awaken and return the favor, it featured a director and pair of A-list stars at the peak of their career powers.
Nicolas Cage had just won an Oscar in 1995 for his breakout performance in Leaving Las Vegas, following that up with two star-making turns in The Rock and Con Air, making the idiosyncratic actor an unlikely action movie star. John Travolta, meanwhile, was enjoying a career renaissance, buoyed by films like Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty. He had worked with director John Woo on the helmer’s previous English language actioner, Broken Arrow, but the pair would hit new heights here.

The news that Bruce Willis will be stepping away from his acting career due to a diagnosis of the neurodegenerative disease aphasia brought with it a renewed appreciation for the work of one of the biggest pop culture stars of our lifetimes. Here are 10 roles that helped define Willis’ often-brilliant career:
Moonlighting (ABC, 1985-89)
Do bears bare? Do bees be? Do bartenders become overnight sensations? Willis was basically unknown when Moonlighting creator Glen Gordon Caron hired him to play quippy private detective David Addison opposite Cybill Shepherd as uptight former fashion model Maddie Hayes.

Westlake’s series of highly popular Parker crime fiction novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.
The first project emerging from the deal will be the film Play Dirty, in which Downey Jr. (Marvel’s Avengers franchise) is set to star as Parker, a professional thief who approaches his job with a straightforward, no-nonsense work ethic. He’s a craftsman. He’s brutal, brilliant. He’s also deadly. He’s whatever it takes to get the money and get away clean. In the 1980s and 1990s, writer Shane Black became one of Hollywood’s most highly paid screenwriters when he reinvented the action genre by revitalizing buddy cop tropes. Films like “Lethal Weapon” and “The Last Boy Scout” turned him into the rare famous screenwriting name, but eventually, he would turn towards his own directing career. While he has made big-budget, high-concept movies like Marvel‘s “Iron Man 3” and the recent “The Predator,” he’s more arguably more beloved for his witty crime comedies like “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” and “The Nice Guys.” To that end, it looks like Black will reteam with his “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” start Robert Downey Jr.

Halle Berry first exploded onto the film scene in 1991, starring in three major studio films: Spike Lee's drama "Jungle Fever," Kevin Hooks' comedy "Strictly Business," and Tony Scott's action spectacular "The Last Boy Scout." Since then, Berry's career has continued at an impressive clip, the actress having starred in high-profile comedies, Hollywood franchise pictures, animated films, and small indie dramas. She was in "The Flintstones," "X-Men," and was Catwoman. Berry is also, to date, the only Black woman to have won the Academy Award for Best Actress (for Marc Forster's 2001 film "Monster's Ball"). In “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” (I think that’s the whole title — good thing the bodyguard didn’t have a dog), the gunshots are so loud they sound like they’re hitting a metal canister you’re trapped inside. Many of those shots are aimed right — splat! — at the head: This is an action comedy in which people get killed like flies, often with their brains splattered. At one point a truck blows up as it makes its way over a giant bridge, and for good measure the bridge blows up too. The film seems to be saying, “Why not?” To describe the rollicking mayhem of “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” as over-the-top would be an insult to the concept of having a top.

Anyone that’s ever seen a movie where Shane Black is credited knows that the writer and director is a huge fan of Christmas, dating back to his very first script. Lethal Weapon is held up alongside Die Hard and Batman Returns as an alternative festive favorite, although he abandoned the majority of the holiday iconography for his last effort The Predator.
The Last Boy Scout, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and The Nice Guys all feature references to the most wonderful time of year, though, so much so that people would be shocked if Shane Black lent his name to anything that didn’t feature at least one Christmas element. So when he signed on to direct the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Iron Man 3, it was a given that Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark would indulge in some holiday shenanigans.

This week, we're digging into a Bruce Willis Christmas classic - and no - not Die Hard or even Die Hard 2: Die Harder. Rather, we're checking out Tony Scott's The Last Boy Scout, starring Willis as a broken down P.I, with Damon Waynes as a similarly burnt out former quarterback,…...

Nothing will ever be able to take away Bruce Willis‘ status as an iconic action hero, based entirely on the fact that he starred in Die Hard, which is arguably the finest ever entry in the genre’s long and illustrious history. As well as appearing in a further four sequels, the rapidly receding actor also went on to feature in box office hits and cult classics like The Last Boy Scout, The Fifth Element and Armageddon to name but three.
However, the 65 year-old is apparently determined now to torpedo his reputation by lending his name to a consistent string of terrible bargain basement action thrillers that occupy the darkest depths of the VOD market, many of which are so irredeemably awful that even Nicolas Cage would probably turn them down.
Willis is certainly keeping himself busy, though, showing up in no less than fourteen such efforts in the last five years alone,...

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.
