To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

I’m pretty lucky; I have lived through some major pop culture events: the Tim Burton Batman films changed comic book media, the birth of Image comics, seeing how Star Trek The Next Generation birthed a new fandom, etc. But one of the biggest events was seeing how animation wouldin a few short years change forever. The Simpsons is one example of how cartoons started to break new ground. Yet, there was one cartoon that broke the world of American animation. It was gross, it was crass, it was unlike anything we had ever seen. If the Simpsons were an explosion, Ren & Stimpy were the atomic bomb. Today many popular cartoons can all trace their origins back to an insane Chihuahua and a stupid big-nosed cat. It is undeniable Ren & Stimpy changed the face of animation. However, the story behind the show’s genesis is full of rebellion,...

Prior to the debut of "Futurama" in 1999, preeminent voice actor Billy West was already a towering presence in his field. He had previously played Doug Funnie in the hit Nickelodeon series "Doug," in addition to voicing the Larry Fine-like Stimpson J. Cat on "The Ren & Stimpy Show" opposite show creator John Kricfalusi. When Kricfalusi was fired for missing deadlines, West took over the role, playing both leads for the bulk of the series. West also played Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd in the 1996 oddity "Space Jam" and has voiced the Honey Nut Cheerios Bee and the Red M&m in myriad TV commercials.
In the normal course of seeking more work, sometime in the late '90s, West found himself in front of the casting directors for Matt Groening's and David X. Cohen's new sci-fi sitcom. West, of course, would be cast in multiple roles for "Futurama,...

Some innovators try to devise a gadget that changes the world. Others hope to solve a global social ill. Sarah Sherman is eager to bring fake vomit on “Saturday Night Live” into the modern age.
The comic has gained notice on the long-running NBC late-night series for bizarre humor that blends gross-out jokes with a taste for the absurd. She’s been working with colleagues for months on new technology that would make the act of pretending to throw up onstage a lot easier — and more comfortable. For years, “SNL” cast members have relied on a tube tucked alongside their arm and usually inside a jacket sleeve that spews out liquid approximating vomit or blood. At just the right moment, the actor holds an arm close to the mouth, and the “vomit rig” does the rest. Dan Aykroyd used such a get-up in 1978 when playing Julia Child, who cut her hand open,...

Before SpongeBob SquarePants and The Fairly OddParents, there was Rugrats.
Alongside fellow “Nicktoons” Doug and The Ren & Stimpy Show, Rugrats premiered Aug. 11, 1991 on Nickelodeon and helped establish an animated storytelling dynasty on the cable network. Created by Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain, the show was by far the most successful of Nickelodeon’s early offerings and helped set the stage for the Patrick Stars and Timmy Turners to come.
The cartoon followed the daily lives of toddlers Tommy Pickles, Chuckie Finster, and twins Phil and Lil DeVille as they attempted to make sense of the adult world while also indulging in their imaginations for some larger-than-life adventures. Though the children’s parents also featured as secondary characters, Tommy and friends could only communicate with one another in their own unique baby language.

In the episode of "The Ren & Stimpy Show" called "Space Madness", the feckless young space cadet Stimpy (Billy West) is charged with guarding a mysterious button called the History Eraser Button. No one knows what the History Eraser Button does, but Stimpy is immediately intrigued. He paces, looking at the button, sweating nervously. He wants to push the button. An announcer begins to dictate Stimpy's temptation. Will he push the beautiful, shiny button? The button that, even now, beckons him ever closer? Stimpy breaks down, wails that he cannot help himself, and pushes the button. History is erased and all the characters immediately cease to be. The end.
"Star Trek: Picard" has been pacing similarly around its own History Eraser Button for eight episodes. The "Picard" button, however, is a nostalgia button. A History Indulging Button, if you will. Showrunner Terry Matalas has been eyeballing his button for eight episodes,...

Stoners and comedy fans everywhere have reason to rejoice: a Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong biopic is on the way.
Written by Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan (who both wrote for Comedy Central’s 2020 reboot of The Ren & Stimpy Show) and directed by Kristian Mercado, the film will follow the comedic duo’s origins through a “never-before-seen” lens, showing their rise from obscurity to stardom. The release date of the film is still unknown, but many feel it’s high time the duo gets their due big-screen recognition.
“We are excited to show the world how two dudes from completely different backgrounds got together, changed comedy, and made cannabis mainstream!” Cheech and Chong said in a joint statement (pun intended).
Both Marin and Chong will have executive producer credits on the project. The beloved cult-icons partnered with Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures after the production company acquired the rights to the yet-to-be-named flick.

It's hard to understate just how revolutionary John Kricfalusi's "The Ren & Stimpy Show" was to the world of animation. Having worked on stultifying commercial products throughout the 1980s, John K., as he is better known, longed for the old, wilder, more creative days of Termite Terrace (the nickname for Warner Bros. Pictures' animation department from the 1930s through the 1950s). He particularly admired Bob Clampett and aimed to make stranger, more grotesque cartoons. The '80s were a time of product-based cartoon shows like "Transformers," "My Little Pony," and "Alvin and the Chipmunks." Such shows were seemingly only green-lit if they had pre-existing "marquee value" or a product to sell.
The airing of "The Ren & Stimpy Show" kicked the door open for a new generation of creator-based cartoon shows. Original ideas began flooding the marketplace in earnest in the early '90s and cynical, product-forward cartoons series fell by the wayside.

Animator Genndy Tartakovsky began his professional career as an assistant animator on the seminal '90s cartoon "Tiny Toon Adventures," right when the medium was evolving into a new animal. Thanks to the late-'80s and early '90s success of creator-based cartoons like "Beavis and Butt-Head" and "The Ren & Stimpy Show" animators like Tartakovsky suddenly found themselves in a marketplace that was aching for edgier, unique cartoons that were not based on existing IP. In 1996, Tartakovsky created the hit Cartoon Network show "Dexter's Laboratory," and he has been a household name ever since. Tartakovsky went on to create the stoic action series "Samurai Jack,"...

When there's no more room in Hell, the IP will walk the earth.
It's all about look-backs and revivals these days. The slasher subgenre is enjoying resurgences of its "Scream," "Texas Chainsaw," "Candyman," and "Halloween" franchises, while streaming services are banking on nostalgia with the '80s-stylized "Stranger Things" and a revival of the iconic "Unsolved Mysteries" docuseries.

Who doesn’t want to see classic animated characters pummel each other in no-holds-barred contact? Apparently not Nickelodeon, who announced the fighting game, “Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl” led by none other than Nigel Thornberry from “The Wild Thornberrys.”

The reveal trailer for the video game, featured at the top of this story, drew comparisons to the popular Super Smash Bros. series, and developers are likely hoping that the sales will have similarities to the long-running franchise as well.

“The Late Show” host pokes fun at Texas Republicans who want to clone deer
On “The Late Show” Thursday night, Stephen Colbert poked fun at recent news out of Texas that state Republicans want to legalize the cloning of deer, by imagining that a sequel to the Disney classic “Bambi” would be like if he were a clone. (Spoiler: It would be extremely bloody.)
In case that makes no sense, earlier this week a Texas Republican proposed a law that, in the unlikely event it passed, would authorize game animal breeders to use cloning in order to produce larger animals. Which… ok.
Wildlife officials note that cloning, because it basically repeats the same DNA,, would introduce potentially dangerous biological uncertainties into the ecosystem, such as the risk that rare vulnerabilities could become more widespread and endanger populations of animals. And that was basically the hook Colbert used for joke.

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 32 Episode 9
The Simpsons season 32, episode 9, “Sorry Not Sorry,” teaches a valuable lesson for a hack comedy cartoon: when apologies don’t work, enforce bribery. This isn’t to belittle extortion, intimidation or other forms of larceny, but this is the twist which Simpsonizes the episode. The pre-seasonal greetings come with the opening credits, as we see signs to “stay 6 feet away from Santa,” and the couch gag which imagines the family as a Pac-Man game, with hungry, hungry Homer on the move until stupid Flanders ghosts him.
While the payoff gives us something less than a pre-Christmas miracle, but goes very far in redeeming the episode from a traditional copout. The teachers at Springfield Elementary are big dumb jerks, and Miss Hoover is one of the biggest. She is also one of its least visible, so it is good to see her featured,...

The “X-Files” is coming back in two-dimensional form; Fox is developing an animated spin-off of the classic sci-fi drama that will boast a more comedic take on the franchise.
TVLine reports that the show, titled “X-Files: Albuquerque,” has received a script and presentation commitment from Fox. Per the publication the “toon off-shoot” will not revolve around David Duchovny‘s Mulder and Gillian Anderson‘s Scully, but will instead center on an office full of misfit agents who investigate X-Files cases “too wacky, ridiculous, or downright dopey for the original series’ protagonists to bother with.
Per TVLine, original series creator Chris Carter is attached to executive produce the spin-off, though he will not write or serve as showrunner. Netflix’s “Paradise Pd” vets Rocky Russo and Jeremy Sosenko are attached to write the pilot and will serve as executive producers alongside original “X-Files” writer Gabe Rotter.

On Aug. 5, Comedy Central announced a reboot to the classic 1991 cartoon The Ren & Stimpy Show. The show’s initial airing, as one of the three original Nicktoons (alongside Doug and Rugrats), was a milestone in cartoon television history, with its purposely crude yet dynamic visuals and heavily exaggerated animation and aesthetics. It also had a deeply complicated run. Ren & Stimpy was controversial both in public and behind the scenes and its sordid history includes creator John Kricfalusi’s inability to complete episodes on time, episodes Nick edited down or refused to air, and the criticisms of the show’s most disturbing aspects. Nevertheless the show was able to cement itself with a passionate, dedicated cult following.
That sordid history, however, reached an impassable point in 2018 when Buzzfeed reported a grotesque expose on Kricfalusi, and his grooming and dating of a 16-year-old girl during the show’s production. Before this point,...

Drunk History was set to return for a seventh season after a renewal last summer, but now those plans have been cancelled. Production had started on the new season of the series just as Covid-19 shut down television and film productions in March.
Deadline reported that ViacomCBS’ Entertainment and Youth Group is behind the decision to cancel the series as the channel's strategy for original programming is being reworked to focus on animated shows like South Park. Recently, the channel has greenlighted reboots of Beavis and Butt-Head and The Ren & Stimpy Show as well as a Daria spin-off titled Jodie. According to Deadline:
“We hear the high costs of producing Drunk History, which features elaborate period reenactments, also played a role in the decision not to proceed with another season.”

Comedy Central has canceled “Drunk History” amid a production hiatus for its previously ordered seventh season. Series creator Derek Waters isn’t going anywhere though: Waters has a first-look deal with the ViacomCBS-owned cable channel.
The cancellation of the remainder of Season 7 will make room for more adult animation on Comedy Central, a person with knowledge of the decision told TheWrap.
Comedy Central is rebooting “Beavis and Butthead” and “The Ren & Stimpy Show.”
Since no Season 7 episodes fully completed production before the cancellation, “Drunk History” will de facto end with the previously aired Season 6.

It's the end of the line for a popular Comedy Central series.
Drunk History has been canceled after six seasons, according to Deadline.
The decision is somewhat surprising because the cabler picked up a 16-episode seventh season last summer.
Early production was said to be underway earlier this year when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, but the series was set to return to production.
Unfortunately, Comedy Central has decided against giving the series time to finish its seventh season, and it's game over.
Drunk History featured comedians getting, you guessed it, drunk and telling co-creator Derek Waters what they could recall about various moments in history.
These moments were then recreated by household names in elaborate period costumes while the narration played out in the background.
Season 6 of Drunk History wrapped in August 2019 with an episode that featued Aubrey Plaza as Cleopatra.

“Drunk History’s” sixth and most recent season will be the Comedy Central show’s last, Variety has confirmed.
The show had been renewed for a seventh season last year and was in pre-production on that season when the Covid-19 pandemic forced production to stop in March. Later on, Comedy Central decided to pull the plug on the show as the network moves away from live-actions scripted shows in favor of adult animation.
Series creators Derek Waters signed a first-look deal with Comedy Central at the time of the Season 7 renewal and will continue to develop projects at the network.
“Drunk History” has earned 17 Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning one thus far. It is currently up for three Emmys this year, including one for best variety sketch series.

As the headlines get darker and darker with almost every day, many are finding comfort in looking back on the TV shows and characters they enjoyed as kids. One of the most celebrated of those shows is the focus of this new feature documentary, which begins streaming just a few days after the big announcement of a revival. It’s deserving of the doc treatment because it was a landmark, becoming a real turning point for the medium. Historians often point to “touchstones” in cinema often making note of the first “talkie”, the first color film, and so on. The same can be done with theatrical animation via a timeline: 1928 first sound cartoon short, 1937 first feature-length cartoon, and into the rise of Pixar. And the same can be done for it’s “lowly cousin”, TV animation. This doc’s focus was neatly squeezed in, between the return of prime-time animation...

It's time to let out a "Happy happy! Joy joy!" because Comedy Central is bringing The Ren & Stimpy Show back to our TV screens! On Wednesday, the network announced that they were rebooting the Nickelodeon show for a whole new generation. The animated series originally premiered in 1991 and followed the adventures of an unhinged chihuahua named Ren and good-natured yet somewhat stupid cat named Stimpy.
The upcoming reboot will have a new creative team, following
accusations of sexual misconduct

Comedy Central is shaping up to be one of the television industry’s leaders in new adult animation: The network has announced a reimagining of the cult classic “The Ren & Stimpy Show” as part of its greater overall push into the genre.
The original “The Ren & Stimpy Show” premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991, the same year the network debuted classic kids shows such as “Rugrats” and “Doug.” Though “The Ren & Stimpy Show” was not explicitly aimed at adults, the show was full of dark humor, raunchy sex jokes, and other mature content, which generated some controversy. In ‘Happy Happy Joy Joy,’ directed by Ron Cicero, and Kimo Easterwood, the central running idea of the doc, among other themes of rebellion and chaos, is that the transgressive brilliance of the 1990s “Ren & Stimpy” cartoon on Nickelodeon was the product of several mad geniuses and auteurs.

“The Ren & Stimpy Show” is the most recent Viacom throwback getting a new life.
Comedy Central announced Wednesday that it has ordered a revival of the ’90s animated series. The move comes amid a significant push into adult animation at ViacomCBS’ entertainment and youth group, which comprises most of the company’s cable brands and is headed by Chris McCarthy.
