It’s the sort of title that sells itself: “Cocaine Bear.” It’s about a bear…who does cocaine. Who says the movies aren’t original anymore? But while that tempting two-word title sure sounds funny and frisky and different, imagine being the guy who pitched the initial story. If you think it’s wild that a film called “Cocaine Bear” got made — and is in theaters right now — you’re feeling a bit like its own creator: screenwriter Jimmy Warden.
Just picture those early pitches. “I think everybody was like, “Ok…great,’ when I was writing the movie, like, ‘Good luck with that,’ and then as it just kept gaining momentum, they have gotten pretty excited,” Warden said in recent interview with IndieWire. “I actually will say, to their credit, when I pitched it to [my family] — you know, because you go home for Thanksgiving or whatever it is and they’re like,...

Gary Oldman is one of the greatest film actors of all time. His versatility is so established now that there are internet memes about his uncanny ability to just simply vanish into a role. No other actor could convincingly play real-life figures as diverse as Lee Harvey Oswald and Winston Churchill, let alone such contrasting literary characters as Dracula and George Smiley. It's this versatility that has led to his success and longevity as an actor; he can play the hero, the villain, a supporting role, or a mere cameo, and never gives a part anything less than his all, whether he's playing Beethoven or a CGI peacock.
It's true that he displayed a propensity for playing villains in outlandish science fiction romps like "The Fifth Element," popcorn actioners like "Air Force One," or serial killer thrillers like "Hannibal." However, more recently he has received long overdue recognition for his...

When it came time for Joshua Hedley to begin work on his second album, the polished Nineties country homage Neon Blue, the neo-traditionalist had only one guiding principle: make a record to be played on a pontoon boat.
“After these last couple years we’ve had, I felt like I didn’t want to hang my sad-sack, typical brand on people,” Hedley says. ‘I wanted to make a record that people could party to.”
Part of this was an artist’s desire to avoid self-repetition. Hedley’s 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox,...

In the mid-Eighties, Ricky Skaggs married his brand of bluegrass — a modernized version that included drums, piano, and electric guitar — to the burgeoning music video medium. The result was one of country music’s all-time great videos, an irreverent clip that shined a light not only on Skaggs’ vibrant new style of country-bluegrass but also on a pillar of the bluegrass genre, Bill Monroe.
The song and video was “Country Boy,” the title track of Skaggs’ 1984 album. Shot in New York City in early 1985, the clip casts Skaggs as a...

The throwback video features the Grand Ole Opry member performing the song within the sparse vocal booth of the legendary country music radio station Wsm as he pays tribute to everyone from George Strait to Joe Diffie and quotes portions of Alan Jackson’s “Chattahoochee.”
Co-written with Corey Crowder and Cary Barlowe, “Raised on Country,” which is expected to be included in Young’s yet-to-be announced next album, has already...

Who’s scared of big, bad major labels? Cody Johnson, a former professional rodeo competitor and a stalwart of the proudly independent Texas country scene, transitions easily into the heart of the Nashville machine on his new album — fittingly titled Ain’t Nothin’ to It.
Texas country is often ignored in national conversations about the genre, which tend to focus on the never-ending battle between country’s traditional wing — now embodied by all things Americana — and its pop-leaning faction. But the scene in Texas is big enough that it can...

Walker Hayes embraces Nineties nostalgia with his new single “Nineties Country,” which furthers the trope of lyrics built around the song titles of past hits. But Hayes doesn’t take the lazy route here — while he drops allusions to major hits like George Strait’s “Check Yes or No” and Kenny Chesney’s “She Thinks My Tractor’s Sexy,” the Alabama songwriter digs deep to include nods to Shenandoah (“The Church on Cumberland Road”) and even Ken Mellons (“Jukebox Junkie”).

Director Mick Jackson on Denial, Donald Trump, directing films, and how he followed The Bodyguard...
Mick Jackson has lived through several chapters of his directorial career. His background was television, in particular the stunning Threads, and his classy adaptation of Chris Mullins’ A Very British Coup. Then he went to Hollywood, directing the likes of L.A. Story, The Bodyguard and Volcano.
He’s been away from cinema for a while, courtesy of some intriguing television projects. But he returns to the big screen this weekend with Denial, a classy courtroom drama that brings the story of Holocaust denier David Irving’s infamous libel action to the cinema. We snagged a chat with him ahead of its release, with the promise of further conversation about his 90s output at a later date too.
Can you talk us through this particular film, and why you wanted to bring it to the big screen?...
